Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to clarify the mechanism of film hole location at the span-wise direction of an internal cooling channel with crescent ribs on the adiabatic film cooling performance, three configurations are designed to observe the effects of the distance between the center of the ellipse and the side wall(Case 1, l = w/2, Case 2, l = w/3 and for Case 3, l = w/4).
Design/methodology/approach
Numerical simulations are conducted under two blowing ratios (i.e. 0.5 and 1) and a fixed cross-flow Reynolds number (Rec = 100,000) with a verified turbulence model.
Findings
It is shown that at low blowing ratio, reducing the distance increases the film cooling effectiveness but keeps the trend of the effectiveness unchanged, while at high blowing ratio, the characteristic is a little bit different in the range of 0 = x/D = 10.
Research limitations/implications
These features could be explained by the fact that shrinking the distance between the hole and side wall induces a much smaller reserved region and vortex downstream the ribs and a lower resistance for cooling air entering the film hole. Furthermore, the spiral flow inside the hole is impaired.
Originality/value
As a result, the kidney-shaped vortices originating from the jet flow are weakened, and the target surface can be well covered, resulting in an enhancement of the adiabatic film cooling performance.

Abstract
Purpose
The development of Big Data and online searching engine provides a good opportunity for studying petition in China. This study has constructed a set of indices for predicting petitions in China by using online searching engines and further explored the predicting role of economic, environment and public life risk perception in various petitions.
Design/methodology/approach
Based on the study of Xue and Liu (2017), this research first re-classified offline petition by human and cluster analysis in terms of social risk perception and built online searching indices of the two sets of petition by using data from “Google Trend” and “Baidu Index.” Second, it analyzed the predicting effect of social risk perception on online searching indices of petition by using Granger causality analysis. Finally, this study integrated the results and selected significant paths from social risk perception to the two sets of petition.
Findings
The study found that the re-classification made by human was more appropriate than the categories made by cluster analysis in terms of social risk perception. For the two sets of petition, the correlations between offline petition and Baidu Index of petition were both more significant than that of Google index. Moreover, economic and finance and resource and environment risk perception had a significant predicting effect on more than one kind of online searching indices of petition.
Originality/value
The results have demonstrated the important role of economic issues in China on predicting petitions of the economic kind, as well as other kinds. They have also reflected the dominant social contradictions and their relationship in modern China.

Abstract
Purpose
Thermal stress of the rotor in a squirrel cage induction motor is generated due to the temperature rise, and the structure of the rotor will be destroyed if the stress acted on the rotor exceeds its limits, so the thermal stress is also one of the main causes led to broken bar fault. The purpose of this paper is to report the thermal stress coupled analysis for the induction motor with healthy and faulty rotor, and to find the variation tendency of the temperature and thermal stress due to broken bars, and the part most likely to break in the rotor as a result of the thermal stress load are identified.
Design/methodology/approach
The steady temperature and thermal stress of the rotor in the case of the healthy and faulty conditions are calculated by finite element method, and the 3D model of the motor used in the experiments is established and the experimental results are presented for both healthy and faulty machines.
Findings
The influence of the broken bars fault on the motor thermal profile and thermal stress can be found, and it explains why the breaking point always appears in the joint of the bars and end rings.
Originality/value
The paper presents the 3D thermal stress coupled model and performance characteristics of induction motor with broken bars. The reasonable constraint is established according to the contact of components each other, and more reasonable fracture location is selected. The results obtained by the simulation model are in a good agreement with practical situation, because the effect of skewed rotor were taken into consideration in the process of simulation.

Abstract
Purpose
Based on extant literature on empowerment and team management, this paper aims to examine the effect of power distance and collectivism on the relationship between empowerment and team performance through the mechanisms of knowledge sharing and intra-group conflict.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper conceptualizes a model depicting the relationship between team empowerment and team performance across cultures.
Findings
The authors argue that team empowerment can increase both knowledge sharing and intra-group conflict in working teams. Knowledge sharing facilitates team performance, while intra-group conflict impairs team performance in the long run. Team empowerment yields different team performance across cultures due to the respective moderating effects of power distance and collectivism.
Originality/value
This paper explicates the moderating roles of power distance and collectivism on the relationship between empowerment, knowledge sharing, intra-group conflict and team performance. The authors suggest that the effectiveness of team empowerment is contingent on the cultural context that the team operates in.
