Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to provide a timely review of the COVID-19-related empirical research published in 19 quartile one (Q1) and quartile two (Q2) tourism and hospitality journals in social science citation index (SSCI).

Design/methodology/approach

A total of 407 COVID-19-related empirical papers were collected from the 19 SSCI Q1 and Q2 tourism and hospitality journals via Scopus database. Thematic content analysis was supplemented with Leximancer software to identify the research themes/subthemes, research methods and countries/regions of research.

Findings

The study found studies of COVID-19’s impact on consumer behaviour predominate in number, followed by studies on response actions and recovery strategies, impact on industry or sectors and impact on workers and employees. Based on the research themes identified, a knowledge mapping framework was produced. Over 70% of the studies used quantitative methods with quantitative survey as the dominant method of data collection. The USA and China were found to be the most studied countries.

Research limitations/implications

The study reviewed empirical research papers until January 2022 and covered most of the COVID-19-related empirical works in the field. An overview of the current state of COVID-19-related empirical research was provided with some critical discussions and suggestions for future research topics.

Originality/value

The findings give researchers a clear index for the current state of the art of COVID-19 research in hospitality and tourism. The paper provides practical implications for industry practitioners to retrieve relevant knowledge from the recent COVID-19-related literature in tourism and hospitality in coping with practical challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

As sharing economy has become increasingly popular, researchers from various disciplines begin to pay more attention to this important phenomenon. However, the current literature is fragmented and lacks a framework to integrate previous studies and guide future research. This study aims to systematically review the literature to better understand what one knows and what one need to know about sharing economy and provide a road map for future research in the context of sharing economy.

Design/methodology/approach

A systematic review was conducted with EBSCO and science direct database. In total, 91 studies were identified.

Findings

The review shows that previous studies focus on different stakeholders, including consumers, peer service providers, platform providers, and competitors. The authors further identify the main topics and limitations of the literature (integrated into a framework) and provide possible directions for future studies. For example, the authors find that few studies have examined individual and technical factors. The findings also show that consumers’ other activities and outcomes have received little attention. To address these limitations, future studies that examine how individual and technical characteristics influence sharing economy’s usage intention/behaviors are suggested. The authors also suggest future studies to explore other activities during the process of sharing economy services.

Research limitations/implications

The framework and directions provided can further the sharing economy research by addressing important gaps in the current literature.

Originality/value

This review identifies many opportunities for researchers to better understand the phenomenon of sharing economy.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital natives have become significant users of social network sites (SNSs); therefore, their disclosed personal information can be misused by SNS providers and/or other users. The purpose of this paper is to understand how digital natives make their self-disclosure decisions on SNSs, as well as whether the concept of culture can still be relevant to digital natives.

Design/methodology/approach

The hypotheses were tested with survey data collected from the USA and China.

Findings

The results show that trust in SNSs and trust in SNS users are positively related to social rewards. Social rewards are positively related to intention to self-disclose, while privacy risk is positively related to privacy concerns. Further, culture significantly moderates the relationship between trust and social rewards.

Research limitations/implications

The study clarifies the effects of different types of trust on privacy in the context of SNSs. Further, the study shows the effects of culture when digital natives make self-disclosure decisions.

Practical implications

SNS providers also need to focus on different types of trust when operating in different cultural contexts. Further, SNS providers expanding their markets should emphasize social rewards to increase the likelihood of self-disclosure.

Originality/value

The results show that while culture can still be helpful to explain digital natives’ trust beliefs, digital natives have started to converge regarding their perceptions about privacy concerns and self-disclosure.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate how to promote two types of knowledge contribution tasks. The authors focus on the role of supervisor and coworker support on motivation, and their effects on two different contribution tasks. Motivating employees to contribute knowledge is quite challenging. While previous studies have tried to understand how to promote knowledge contribution, few have differentiated between knowledge contribution tasks.

Design/methodology/approach

Information technology support was chosen as the context of this study, and data were collected from system administrators within a Fortune 500 company via a web-based survey.

Findings

Results show the differential effects of two forms of motivation on different contribution tasks, and supervisor support is positively associated with intrinsic motivation. Specifically, while intrinsic motivation is positively associated with challenging knowledge contribution, external motivation is positively related to mundane knowledge contribution and negatively related to challenging knowledge contribution.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the current literature by providing a deeper theoretical understanding of knowledge contribution tasks, and contributes to practice by offering suggestions on how to better motivate employees within organizations and promote different knowledge contribution tasks.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to study the effect of Sn on the corrosion behavior of weathering steel (WS) in a simulated tropical marine atmosphere.

Design/methodology/approach

Indoor alternate immersion tests, electrochemical measurements and real-time current-monitoring technology based on the galvanic corrosion principle were used and the scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electron probe microanalyzer were used to analyze the morphology and component of the rust layer.

Findings

The results indicated that Sn has a positive influence on the corrosion process. Sn participated in the composition of the rust layer in the form of SnO2 and is enriched in the inner rust layer. SnO2 participated in the coprecipitation process with iron oxides and oxyhydroxides, which promoted further transformation of γ-FeOOH to α-FeOOH. As a result, the rust layer of Sn-containing steel was continuous, compact and effectively blocked the invasion of aggressive Cl. Therefore, the additive of Sn enhanced the corrosion resistance of WS in a simulated tropical marine atmosphere.

Originality/value

The corrosion behaviors of WS were researched by the real-time current-monitoring technology which was rarely used.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the electrochemical behavior of 690 alloy with corrosion products in simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) primary water environment.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper opted for a laboratory study using simulation of high temperature and high pressure environment immersion testing. The electrochemical behavior was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKP). Moreover, the corrosion products were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Findings

The results demonstrated that the particle majority in the 690 alloy corrosion products subsequent to high temperature and high pressure immersion testing were mainly oxides of Fe and Ni, which protected the matrix. As the immersion testing duration increased, the corrosion potential of the 690 alloy apparently increased, and the corrosion current density de'creased, while the corrosion resistance Rf increased gradually along with the density. The SKP demonstrated that the EKP increased by nearly 400 mV from −0.42 to −0.03 V following the immersion testing, indicating that the corrosion product film played an apparent protective role on the substrate.

Originality/value

This paper provides a theoretical basis for the corrosion behavior and inhibition mechanism of 690 alloy in PWR primary water environment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develops a new-type low-alloy corrosion resistant steel containing Sb and investigate the corrosion mechanism of this new-type low-alloy steel.

Design/methodology/approach

Energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-Ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of the rust layers formed on these samples. Laser confocal microscopy was used to observe the corroded surfaces of the steels.

Findings

Results showed that Sb added can consume H+ in the solution, thereby preventing the oxygen reaction to slow down the corrosion rate. Meanwhile, a stable and insoluble substance (Sb2O3) in the acidic solution would be produced when the reaction of the product of Sb and H+ with the enough dissolved oxygen in the solution. Due to the precipitation of Sb2O3 and iron oxyhydroxides, the rust layer of Sb-containing steel became more uniform and compact, which resulted in better corrosion resistance in acid environment.

Originality/value

In this study, a new-type acid resistant low-alloy steel containing Sb was developed. Compared with the results, the corrosion mechanism of the new-type low-alloy steel in acid environment was discussed.
