Abstract

Purpose

The paper debunks Peter P. Li’s assertion that Yin-Yang is superior to any other cognitive frames or logical systems for paradox research. The purpose of this paper is to alert the Chinese indigenous management researchers to the danger of Chinese exceptionalism and over-confidence.

Design/methodology/approach

To show that Peter P. Li’s assertion is doubtful, the authors identify the flaws in his analysis.

Findings

The authors find that there are three serious flaws in Peter P. Li’s analysis. First, there are four defects in the typology of cognitive frames he built in order to compare Yin-Yang with the others. Second, his understanding of dialectics in general and Hegelian dialectics in particular is flawed. And finally, without resorting to Yin-Yang, many scholars can develop theories that are equivalent to those derived from Yin-Yang.

Research limitations/implications

Due to the page limit, this paper only focuses on arguing that Yin-Yang is not superior to other cognitive frames or logical systems without going one step further to explain in which situations Yin-Yang are valuable and might be more suitable than others for helping us understand some research issues.

Practical implications

This paper implies that we should not blindly believe that the Chinese way of thinking and acting is superior to other people’s. Chinese people should be open-minded in the globalized era, not only promoting their own culture but also appreciating and learning from other cultures.

Social implications

The reduction of cultural exceptionalism and ethnocentrism can make cross-cultural communication and interaction smoother.

Originality/value

This paper is a rigorous critique on the “Yin-Yang being superior” assertion of Peter P. Li.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to comment on Peter Ping Li’s understanding of Zhong-Yong balancing, presented in his article titled “Global implications of the indigenous epistemological system from the East: How to apply Yin-Yang balancing to paradox management.” Seeing his understanding of Zhong-Yong balancing being incorrect and incomplete, the author proposes an alternative perspective on Zhong-Yong as dynamic balancing between Yin-Yang opposites.

Design/methodology/approach

The author first explain why Peter P. Li’s “asymmetry” and “superiority” arguments are flawed by referring to the original text of the classical book of Zhong-Yong (中庸) and a comparison between Zhong-Yong and Aristotle’s doctrine of the mean. The author then propose an alternative approach to Zhong-Yong balancing that is embedded in the original text Zhong-Yong but somehow has been neglected by many Chinese scholars. The author concludes the commentary by unifying the two alternative approaches to Zhong-Yong balancing under the inclusion-selection-promotion-transition (ISPT) framework of Zhong-Yong balancing.

Findings

There are three main findings. First, as the original text of Zhong-Yong does not prescribe asymmetry, Peter P. Li’s notion of “Yin-Yang balancing” is ironically unbalanced or anti-Zhong-Yong due to his emphasis on asymmetry to the exclusion of symmetry. Second, due to the equivalency between Zhong-Yong and Aristotle’s doctrine of the mean, Peter P. Li’s assertion that “Yin-Yang balancing” is superior as a solution to paradox management is flawed. Third, his “Yin-Yang balancing” solution is only (the less sophisticated) one of two alternative approaches to Zhong-Yong balancing, i.e., ratio-based combination of Yin-Yang opposites. What Peter P. Li and many other Chinese have neglected is another approach to Zhong-Yong that is embedded in the original text of Zhong-Yong, which I call “analysis plus synthesis.”

Research limitations/implications

As it is a commentary there are no specific limitations except for what can be covered in the space available.

Practical implications

The “analysis plus synthesis” approach to Zhong-Yong can be adopted by practitioners who are demanded to balance between opposite forces in daily life and work.

Social implications

The rejection of the “Yin-Yang balancing being superior” assertion facilitates reduction of friction and non-cooperation between intellectual traditions.

Originality/value

This commentary contributes to the “West meets East” discourse by debunking Peter P. Li’s assertion that Yin-Yang balancing is superior as a solution to paradox management and his prescription that balancing between Yin-Yang opposites must be asymmetric. It also contributes to the Chinese indigenous management research by identifying a largely neglected approach to Zhong-Yong balancing (i.e. “analysis plus synthesis”) that is alternative to the commonly understood ratio-based combination approach (e.g. “Yin-Yang balancing”). In addition, it contributes to the management literature by proposing the ISPT framework of Zhong-Yong balancing.

Abstract

Purpose

R&D indicates absorptive capacity, which may affect IT payoff. The purpose of this paper is to examine how R&D investment affects the relation between IT investment and firm performance and under what circumstances R&D intensity is more beneficial to IT returns. Such study has been lacking in R&D research and IT payoff literature.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual model for linking IT investment, R&D investment, environmental dynamism and firm performance was developed and tested by data collected from Chinese listed firms from 2007 to 2013, using fixed effects regression model.

Findings

The results show positive moderating effects of firm R&D investment and government R&D subsidies on the relation between IT investment and firm performance. Furthermore, the impact of firm R&D investment on IT payoff is stronger for firms in more dynamic environments. The findings suggest that R&D investment creates additional business value through interactions with IT, and complementarities between R&D and IT, as manifested in their interaction effect on firm performance vary across industry sectors.

Research limitations/implications

This paper indicates the importance of complementarities between R&D and IT, which should prove helpful to researchers and practitioners engaged in Chinese business.

Originality/value

This paper presents one of the first attempts at examining the moderating effect of R&D investment on the relation between IT investment and firm performance. Especially this study helps to understand under what circumstances R&D investment is more or less likely to be beneficial to IT returns.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a fast, accurate and efficient algorithm for assessment of transient behavior of grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered earth model considering soil ionization effect.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this paper is to develop a numerical simulation method to calculate the lightning impulse response of the grounding grid buried in a horizontal multilayered earth model. The mathematical model about the hybrid method based on PI basic function belonging to time domain is proposed in the paper; the mode can precisely calculate the lightning current distribution and lightning impulse response to grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered soil model considering soil ionization effect. To increase computing efficiency, quasi-static complex image method (QSCIM) and its time-domain Green’s function closed form are introduced in the model.

Findings

The hybrid model is rather stable, with the respect to the number of elements used and with excellent convergence rate. In addition, because this mathematical model belongs to the time domain algorithm, it is very powerful for the simulation of soil ionization caused by high amplitude lightning current.

Research limitations/implications

To increase computing efficiency, QSCIM and its time domain Green's function closed form are introduced in the model.

Practical implications

The mathematical model about the hybrid method based on PI basic function can precisely calculate the lightning current distribution and lightning impulse response to grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered soil model considering the soil ionization effect.

Social implications

Considering the soil ionization effect, the simulation calculation of lightning impulse response of substation grounding grid buried in the actual horizontal multilayered earth can effectively support the scientific and efficient design of lightning protection performance of substation grounding grid.

Originality/value

The hybrid model in time domain is originally developed by the authors and used to precisely calculate the lightning current distribution and lightning impulse response to grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered soil model considering soil ionization effect. It is simple and very efficient and can easily be extended to arbitrary grounding configurations.

Abstract

Purpose

Metro wheels running on different lines can undergo wear at different positions. This paper aims to investigate the effects of wheel wear at two typical positions, i.e. wheel flange and tread, on the dynamic performance of metro vehicles and analyzes the differences, with an aim of providing theoretical support on wheel reprofiling for different metro lines.

Design/methodology/approach

Wheel profile data were measured on two actual metro lines, denoted A and B. It was observed that wheel wear on Lines A and B was concentrated on flanges and treads, respectively. A metro vehicle dynamics model was built using multibody dynamics software SIMPACK. Then it was applied to analyze the differences in effects of wheel wear at different positions on vehicle dynamic performance (VDP) for various speeds (50, 60 and 70 km/h) and line conditions (straight line, R1000m, R600m and R300m curves). Critical speed and vibration acceleration were used as indicators of VDP during linear motion (on straight track), while VDP during curvilinear motion (on curved track) was evaluated in terms of wheel/rail lateral force, wheel/rail vertical force, derailment coefficient and wheel unloading rate.

Findings

First, compared to wheel profile with tread wear, wheel profile with flange wear showed better performance during linear motion. When the distance traveled reached 8 × 104 and 14 × 104 km, the vehicle’s critical speed was 12.2 and 21.6% higher, respectively. The corresponding vertical and lateral vibration accelerations were 59.7 and 74.8% lower. Second, compared to wheel profile with flange wear, that with tread wear showed better performance during curvilinear motion, with smaller wheel/rail lateral force, derailment coefficient and wheel unloading rate. When the vehicle speed was 50, 60 and 70 km/h, the maximum difference in the three indicators between the two wheel profiles was 40.2, 44.7 and 23.1%, respectively. For R1000m, R600m and R300m curves, the corresponding maximum difference was 45.7, 69.0 and 44.4%, respectively.

Practical implications

The results of the study can provide a guidance and theoretical support on wheel reprofiling for different metro lines. On lines with large proportions of curved sections, metro vehicles are more prone to wheel flange wear and have poorer dynamic performance during curvilinear motion. Therefore, more attention should be paid to flange lubrication and maintenance for such lines. On lines with higher proportions of straight sections, metro vehicles are more prone to tread wear and have poorer performance on straight sections. So, tread maintenance and service requires more attention for such lines.

Originality/value

Existing research has focused primarily on the effects of wheel wear on VDP, but fails to consider the differences in the effects of wheel wear at different positions on VDP. In actual metro operation, the position of wheel wear can vary significantly between lines. Based on measured positions of wheel wear, this paper examines the differences in the effects of wheel wear at two typical positions, i.e. tread and flange, on VDP in detail.

Abstract

Purpose

The measurement of heat flux is of importance to the development of aerospace engine as basic physical quantities in extreme environment. Heat radiation is one of the basic forms of heat transfer phenomenon. The structure optimizing can improve the performance and infrared absorptivity of the thin film sensor.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper designed one kind of thin film heat flux sensor (HFS) with antireflective coating based on transparent conductive oxide thermopile. The introduced membrane structure is so thin that it has little impact on sensor performance. Fabrication of thin film sensors were fabricated by physical vapor deposition (PVD) process.

Findings

The steady-state and dynamic response characteristics of the HFS were investigated by calibration platform. The experimental results shown that the absorptivity of the membrane structure (for1070nm) improved compared with that before optimization. The sensitivity of heat flux gauge was 48.56 µV/ (kW/m2) and its frequency response was determined to be about 1980 Hz.

Originality/value

The thin film HFS uses thermopile based on Indium Tin Oxid and In2O3. The antireflective coating is introduced to hot endpoint of HFS to improve sensitivity on laser thermal source. The infrared optical properties of membrane layer structure were investigated. The steady-state and the transient response characteristics of the heat flux sensor were also investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to make the mobile e-commerce shopping more convenient and avoid information overload by a mobile e-commerce recommendation system using an improved Apriori algorithm.

Design/methodology/approach

Combined with the characteristics of the mobile e-commerce, an improved Apriori algorithm was proposed and applied to the recommendation system. This paper makes products that are recommended to consumers valuable by improving the data mining efficiency. Finally, a Taobao online dress shop is used as an example to prove the effectiveness of an improved Apriori algorithm in the mobile e-commerce recommendation system.

Findings

The results of the experimental study clearly show that the mobile e-commerce recommendation system based on an improved Apriori algorithm increases the efficiency of data mining to achieve the unity of real time and recommendation accuracy.

Originality/value

The improved Apriori algorithm is applied in the mobile e-commerce recommendation system solving the limitation of the visual interface in a mobile terminal and the mass data that are continuously generated. The proposed recommendation system provides greater prediction accuracy than conventional systems in data mining.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an alternative perspective on Zhong-Yong that is different from the notion of “Yin-Yang balancing” and apply it to understand the issue of balancing the top-down and bottom-up processes in strategy making.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors adopt a “West meets East” mindset and approach to develop an alternative perspective on Zhong-Yong, and then apply this perspective to understand the issue of balancing the top-down and bottom-up processes in strategy making. There are three steps in the process of developing the alternative perspective. First, the authors argue that the essence of “Yin-Yang balancing” is a ratio-based solution to paradoxical balancing, which is in fact equivalent to Aristotle’s doctrine of the mean and compatible with some western management scholars’ approaches to solving paradox. Second, the authors identify a different generic solution to paradoxical balancing implicit in the western management literature. Third, the authors find in the original text of Zhong-Yong equivalent ideas to the identified different generic solution and then propose an alternative perspective on Zhong-Yong that is fundamentally different from the notion of “Yin-Yang balancing.”

Findings

Applied to the issue of balancing the top-down and bottom-up processes in strategy making, the new perspective on Zhong-Yong provides us with the following prescriptive insights from the life-wisdom of eastern philosophy: first, top management (e.g. Shun as the sage-king) must listen to various views and opinions also from employees and low-level managers at the bottom of the organization to be better informed about complex issues. Second, top management must analyze the diverse elements of the various views and opinions they collect and synthesize by taking the good from the bad to find smarter solutions and make decisions with better outcomes. Third, abiding by a set of (more or less) cohesive values help top managers be open and receptive to information and insights from low-level organizational members and enhancing unbiased information.

Research limitations/implications

This paper is mainly a theoretical perspective. Empirical work is needed to test the prescriptions offered in this paper.

Practical implications

Practitioners may learn new perspectives from ancient Chinese philosophies on how to balance.

Originality/value

This paper applies a new perspective on Zhong-Yong to an important paradox in strategic management.

Abstract

Purpose

Drawing on social network and information diffusion theories, the authors study the impact of the structural characteristics of a seller’s local social network on her promotion effectiveness in social commerce.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors define a local social network as one formed by a focal seller, her directly connected users and all links among these users. Using data from a large social commerce website in China, the authors build econometric models to investigate how the density, grouping and centralization of local social networks affect the number of likes received by products posted by sellers.

Findings

Local social networks with low density, grouping and centralization are associated with more likes on sellers’ posted products. The negative effects of grouping and centralization are reduced when density is high.

Originality/value

The paper deepens the understanding of the determinants of social commerce success from a network structure perspective. In particular, it draws attention to the role of sellers’ local social networks, forming a foundation for future research on social commerce.

Purpose

Vortex grippers use tangential nozzles to form vortex flow and are able to grip a workpiece without any physical contact, thus avoiding any unintentional workpiece damage. This study aims to use experimental and theoretical methods to investigate the effects of nozzle diameter on the performance.

Design/methodology/approach

First, various suction force-distance curves were developed to analyze the effects of nozzle diameter on the maximum suction force. This study determines the tangential velocity distribution on the workpiece surface by substituting the experimental pressure distribution data into simplified Navier-Stokes equations and then used these equations to analyze the effects on the flow field. Subsequent theoretical analysis of the distribution of pressure and circumferential velocity further validated the experimental results. Next, by rearranging these relationships, the study considered the effects of nozzle diameter on the inherent vortex gripper characteristics. In addition, this study developed various suction force-energy consumption curves to analyze the effects of nozzle diameter.

Findings

The results of this study indicated that the vortex gripper’s circumferential velocity and maximum suction force decrease with increasing nozzle diameter. Nozzle diameter did not significantly affect the inherent frequency of the vortex gripper-workpiece inertial system or the corresponding suspension stability of the workpiece. However, an increase in nozzle diameter did effectively increase the vortex gripper’s suspension region. Finally, as the nozzle diameter increased, the energy required to achieve the same maximum suction force decreased.

Originality/value

This study’s findings can enable optimization of nozzle design in emerging vortex gripper designs and facilitate informed selection among existing vortex grippers.
