Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a fast, accurate and efficient algorithm for assessment of transient behavior of grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered earth model considering soil ionization effect.

Design/methodology/approach

The purpose of this paper is to develop a numerical simulation method to calculate the lightning impulse response of the grounding grid buried in a horizontal multilayered earth model. The mathematical model about the hybrid method based on PI basic function belonging to time domain is proposed in the paper; the mode can precisely calculate the lightning current distribution and lightning impulse response to grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered soil model considering soil ionization effect. To increase computing efficiency, quasi-static complex image method (QSCIM) and its time-domain Green’s function closed form are introduced in the model.

Findings

The hybrid model is rather stable, with the respect to the number of elements used and with excellent convergence rate. In addition, because this mathematical model belongs to the time domain algorithm, it is very powerful for the simulation of soil ionization caused by high amplitude lightning current.

Research limitations/implications

To increase computing efficiency, QSCIM and its time domain Green's function closed form are introduced in the model.

Practical implications

The mathematical model about the hybrid method based on PI basic function can precisely calculate the lightning current distribution and lightning impulse response to grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered soil model considering the soil ionization effect.

Social implications

Considering the soil ionization effect, the simulation calculation of lightning impulse response of substation grounding grid buried in the actual horizontal multilayered earth can effectively support the scientific and efficient design of lightning protection performance of substation grounding grid.

Originality/value

The hybrid model in time domain is originally developed by the authors and used to precisely calculate the lightning current distribution and lightning impulse response to grounding grids buried in horizontal multilayered soil model considering soil ionization effect. It is simple and very efficient and can easily be extended to arbitrary grounding configurations.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the performances of liquidity factors in the stock market cycle. It aims to investigate whether the contribution of liquidity factors changes with stock market trends.

Design/methodology/approach

Six liquidity proxies and two-factor construction methods are compared in this study. The spanning regression method was applied to examine the contribution of liquidity factors to the asset pricing model, while the Fama and MacBeth regression method was used for examining the pricing power of liquidity factors.

Findings

The result shows that liquidity factors are accretive to models explaining returns in bull markets but not accretive to models in bear markets. The most appropriate method of constructing liquidity factors in the Japanese stock market has also been clarified.

Originality/value

In the Japanese stock market, there has never been a comprehensive test of the role of the liquidity risk factor in different market trends using the long-run data. This study helps with identifying the importance of liquidity pricing risk in different market trends. It also fills the gaps by comparing liquidity factors that are constructed through different methods and proxies and provides evidence for further confirming the correct asset pricing model in the future.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the role played by brand equity orientation and failure type in service recovery. Specifically, through the lens of forgiveness, the way brand equity orientation and failure type influence consumer response to recovery is revealed.

Design/methodology/approach

This research tests a novel model using data collected from 1,589 consumers in two scenario-based experimental studies. The statistical product and service solutions (SPSS) program with the PROCESS tool was used to test the mediation and moderated mediation effects.

Findings

The research findings suggest that forgiveness plays a mediation role in the relationship between recovery and satisfaction. Brand equity orientation moderates the mediation effect of forgiveness on the relationship between recovery and recovery satisfaction. In addition, failure type also plays an important role and there is a significant three-way interaction effect (service recovery × brand equity orientation × failure type) on recovery satisfaction under certain circumstances.

Research limitations/implications

Building on the extant literature which focuses on the cognitive process when investigating recovery and consumer reaction, this research advocates the significant role played by the psychological process, namely, the feeling of forgiveness, in explaining the effect of distinct recovery strategies on consumer satisfaction. This research also unveils the effects of brand equity orientation and failure type on recovery outcomes.

Practical implications

When addressing performance failure, brand equity orientation and failure type need to be identified. Businesses could develop recovery strategies to arouse consumer forgiveness, which would lead to increased recovery satisfaction. When designing recovery strategies, managers need to be mindful of the effects of brand equity orientation and failure type.

Originality/value

This research is one of the few which reveals the mediating role played by forgiveness on the effect of recovery. Taking brand equity orientation and failure type into consideration, the findings of this research provide new insights into the recovery literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of perceived justice and consumer's moral judgment of a service failure on recovery outcomes.

Design/methodology/approach

The research model is examined by adopting a field study approach followed by an experiment. The SPSS program with the PROCESS tool was used to analyze the simple moderation and moderated mediation effects.

Findings

The research findings show that consumer's moral judgment of a service failure moderates the relationship between service recovery (psychological compensation vs monetary compensation) and recovery outcomes (recovery satisfaction, negative word of mouth and repurchase intention). Moreover, the conditional indirect effect of service recovery on recovery outcomes through perceived justice is significant when service failure is seen as less moral. Specifically, consumers report lower perceived justice and react negatively to recovery measures when service failure is seen as less moral. In contrast, when consumers perceive a service failure as moral, a psychological compensation outperforms a monetary compensation, lessening negative word of mouth (NWOM).

Originality/value

These findings provide important insights into recovery measure development when considering consumer moral perspectives.

Abstract

We analyze the economic consequence of government intervention on the incidence of accounting fraud and audit fees of both Big 4 and local big auditors on Chinese audit market in the period 2006–2013. In 2009, Chinese government issued favorable polices to local big auditors and required certain Chinese companies to give priority to these auditors. We find that market share of Big 4 auditors is quite stable before and after government intervention, but market share of local big auditors increases at the cost of local small auditors after intervention. Although audit fee premiums of both local big and Big 4 auditors have increased after intervention, the positive effect of local big auditors on audit fee premiums has significantly decreased. Further, both Big 4 and local big auditors are not likely to reduce the incidence of accounting fraud in pre- and post-intervention period. Our results suggest that Chinese government support to local auditors does not significantly enhance these auditors’ competitiveness in terms of audit fee and audit quality.

Abstract

Purpose

Established on the detailed exploration of Chinese ancient management philosophies (CAMPs), the purpose of this paper is to extract enlightenments from CAMPs to see whether there exist some similarities between CAMPs and contemporary human resources management thoughts (CHRMTs) and pinpoint CAMPs' implications on human resource management practices nowadays.

Design/methodology/approach

Inspired by Lao Tzu's “When we can lay hold of the Dao of old to direct the things of the present day, and are able to know it as it was of old in the beginning, this is called (unwinding) the clue of Dao”, the paper explores, categorizes and integrates wisdom stemmed from CAMPs to evaluate whether there exist some commonly accepted arguments between CAMPs and CHRMTs.

Findings

CAMPs which have been passed on by generations for the past 2,500 years in China provide firm ground for human resources management thoughts and practices development; CAMPs' emphasis on people's well cultured morality and highly developed virtues has kindled a light to illuminate human resources management practices, not only in the past but also in the future. CHRMTs' principles concerning “people‐centered strategies”, employee recruitment and selection strategies, employee training and education strategies, staffing as well as employee retention strategies, can all trace their sources from CAMPs.

Originality/value

The research on CAMPs is not only significant to complement and extend CHRMTs but also useful to direct current human resource management practices.

Abstract

This chapter provides the foundation for the book. The objective of this chapter is to outline the theme of the book and to provide the context for the chapters that follow. Disaster recovery is a challenge for governments and for affected communities, families, and individuals. It is a challenge, because recovery from catastrophic disasters can be much more complicated and elusive than what can be addressed by national and international aid organizations given the time and other resources. The short literature review provides the research context, and the overview of the book describes each of the chapters briefly.

Abstract

Cooperation in agriculture and agricultural products trade is a new driving force for Sino-Russian cooperation in economy and trade in recent years. Driven by the interests and needs of both countries, a Free Trade Zone (FTZ) on the Chinese territory facing Russia, the Heilongjiang FTZ, has been established, and agricultural cooperation has attracted much attention within the FTZ framework. This chapter aims to analyze and explain the prospects of Sino-Russian agricultural cooperation under the framework of the Heilongjiang FTZ based on the current situations of cooperation. The author concludes that the Heihe and Suifenhe Areas in Heilongjiang FTZ are developed with a focus on Sino-Russian agricultural cooperation. This chapter is innovative because it combined the traditional research perspective on Sino-Russian agricultural cooperation with that under the FTZ framework. The author thinks that to facilitate the cooperation between the two countries in agriculture under the FTZ, the two governments must cooperate more extensively. Besides, they need to discuss the establishment of infrastructures like a joint agricultural product R&D centre and a digital development centre for agriculture. Meanwhile, the schemes of dispute settlement and risk-sharing should be addressed as well.
