Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the impact of the two essential subjects of servitization (service and goods innovation) on customer satisfaction. The authors explained the paradox of servitization by determining how service innovation and goods innovation affect customer satisfaction interacting with environmental turbulence and marketing intensity.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors obtained 376 observations of 84 listed Chinese companies. On the basis of content analysis and measurement from secondhand data, the authors first tested the hypotheses in the fixed-effects model. The authors conducted a split-sample analysis by dividing environmental turbulence into two samples to explain the results effectively and better interpret the relationship between two innovations to customer satisfaction.

Findings

The results show that goods and service innovations positively affect customer satisfaction, but the effect of service innovation is more substantial. Furthermore, environmental turbulence negatively moderates the relationship between service innovation and customer satisfaction. The empirical results indicated that, if enterprises enhance marketing intensity, then the growth of environmental turbulence weakens the positive impact of goods and services innovation on customer satisfaction.

Originality/value

This study provided an understanding of the impact of servitization on intangible assets. This study also responded to previous literature’s call for research on the impact of external environmental factors on servitization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to solve the problem that the analytic solution model of spatial three-dimensional coordinate measuring system based on dual-position sensitive detector (PSD) is complex and its precision is not high.

Design/methodology/approach

A new three-dimensional coordinate measurement algorithm by optimizing back propagation (BP) neural network based on genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The mapping relation between three-dimensional coordinates of space points in the world coordinate system and light spot coordinates formed on dual-PSD has been built and applied to the prediction of three-dimensional coordinates of space points.

Findings

The average measurement error of three-dimensional coordinates of space points at three-dimensional coordinate measuring system based on dual-PSD based on GA-BP neural network is relatively small. This method does not require considering the lens distortion and the non-linearity of PSD. It has simple structure and high precision and is suitable for three-dimensional coordinate measurement of space points.

Originality/value

A new three-dimensional coordinate measurement algorithm by optimizing BP neural network based on GA is proposed to predict three-dimensional coordinates of space points formed on three-dimensional coordinate measuring system based on dual-PSD.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the effect of coatings prepared by the addition of copper-aluminum alloy powder on the corrosion behavior of 90/10 copper-nickel alloy.

Design/methodology/approach

Coatings of copper-aluminum alloy powder at different contents (Wt.% = 50%, 60%, 70% and 80%) were prepared by the high-temperature heat treatment process. The microstructure and component of the coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties of the coating were explored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.

Findings

The results show that the aluminized layer was successfully constructed on the surface of 90/10 copper-nickel alloy, the composition of the coating was composed of copper-aluminum phase and aluminum-nickel phase, the existence of the aluminum-nickel phase was formed by the diffusion of Ni elements within the substrate and because of the diffusion, the Al-Ni phase was distributed in the middle and bottom of the coating more. The Al-Ni phase is considered to be the enhanced phase for corrosion resistance. When the copper-aluminum alloy powder content is 70 Wt.%, the corrosion resistance is the best.

Originality/value

The enhancement of corrosion resistance of 90/10 copper-nickel alloy by the copper-aluminum alloy powder was revealed, the composition of the aluminized layer and the mechanism of corrosion resistance were discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper investigates the relationship between product market competition and firms’ water information disclosure and how firms’ ownership type can affect this relationship in China, offering new insights into corporate water management.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors investigated 303 Chinese listed companies in highly water-sensitive industries to examine how product market competition influences corporate water information disclosure by subdividing the product market competition into market competition at the firm level and the industry competition intensity at the industry level.

Findings

The results show that there exists an inverted U-shaped relationship between industry competition and water information disclosure; enterprises with the highest market power in a mildly competitive industry are more willing to voluntarily disclose water information and play an industry benchmarking role. Further tests demonstrate that the relationship between industry competition intensity and water information disclosure is stronger for state-owned enterprises than for private enterprises.

Research limitations/implications

The current water resources regulations in China are relatively lax and the water risk awareness of firms is weak, which may affect the applicability of the results. In addition, water information disclosure research is a relatively new field and a quantitative index system for water information disclosure is still in the exploratory stage. Further developments, including the selection, definition and measuring methods of a water index are required.

Practical implications

The authors developed a new direction of enterprise water management activities from the perspective of market competition. Based on the market conditions in China, the authors also investigated the impact of the ownership type of the enterprises on the relationship between market competition and water information disclosure.

Social implications

The authors suggested that the government should improve laws and regulations and adopt incentive mechanisms to encourage enterprises to implement water resource management. In addition, the government should encourage high market status enterprises to actively fulfill their environmental responsibilities so that the entire industry is encouraged to follow suit.

Originality/value

This study represents an important development in the field of environmental accounting and is the first research on corporate water information disclosure; it also extends the research on the influence mechanisms of market competition on the environmental management practices of enterprises.

Abstract

Purpose

Thiadiazole compounds and their derivatives have carrying capacity and good lubricating properties. However, their poor oil-solubility limited their wide usage in lubricating oil. The study aims to develop thiadiazole lubricant additives with better oil-solubility. When the hindered phenol antioxidation functional group and alkyl-chain are introduced to thiadiazole, the resulting product could have better oil-solubility and excellent antioxidation resistance, anti-wear and corrosion resistance in the lubricating oil.

Design/methodology/approach

One kind of thiadiazole lubricant additive, for the first time, has been synthesized from 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole. Its tribological performance has also been evaluated by four-ball test. And, its oxidation resistance has been estimated by rotating pressure vessel oxidation test and pressurized differential scanning calorimetry. The anticorrosion performance of such an additive has been studied by GB/T 5096 standard method test.

Findings

The synthesized thiadiazole additive has excellent anti-oxidation capability, good anti-wear and extreme pressure properties and good anticorrosion performance, in comparison with zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). In base oils, the comprehensive performance of thiadiazole additive is comparable to ZDDP. Mechanistic studies indicate that the S and N active elements were involved in the formation of a boundary film. This may account for the formation of a composite membrane on the metal surface and thus for the tribological performance of such thiadiazole additives.

Originality/value

The thiadiazole derivatives, which are ashless and have environmentally friendly features, are a potential alternative to ZDDP. Because of the film formed on the friction surface, thiadiazole compounds may serve as an excellent anti-wear additive and are expected to reduce friction and wear between metals.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the influence of individual and combined effects of the mode focused on scientific and technological-based innovation (STI) and the mode based on learning by doing, by using and by interacting (DUI) on firms’ innovation performance and whether information technology (IT) moderates the relation between different innovation modes and firms’ innovation performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A conceptual model linking innovation modes, IT (including IT infrastructure and the frequency of IT usage) and firms’ innovation performance was developed, and the proposed hypotheses were tested empirically using World Bank’s micro survey data collected from manufacturing firms in an emerging market (China).

Findings

The results show that individually both STI mode of innovation and DUI mode of innovation have a significant positive effect on firms’ innovative performance, whereas the combined STI and DUI mode of innovation has a negative impact. IT infrastructure moderates the relation between STI (or STI and DUI) mode of innovation and firms’ innovation performance, while the frequency of IT usage has no moderating effects on the relationship between any kind of innovation modes and firms’ innovation performance.

Research limitations/implications

Although some results are quite different from what is expected, these are insightful for both academics and policymakers. The use of cross-sectional data has its limitations. Therefore, future studies based on longitudinal data should be conducted. This study points toward the need to conduct the meta-analysis to better explain the existing inconsistencies in the findings of relevant quantitative studies.

Practical implications

This study provides firm managers with practical implications. The conclusions of this study imply that the impact of the combined STI and DUI mode of innovation is likely to be contextual, so firms should make contingent decisions on whether to engage in STI mode of innovation and DUI mode of innovation simultaneously according to their own organizational conditions. Moreover, face-to-face contacts are particularly important when a firm engages in DUI mode of innovation. In addition, the focus of IT strategy of firms engaged in STI mode of innovation should be on perfecting their IT infrastructure rather than increasing the frequency of IT usage.

Originality/value

This paper provides new evidence for the relation between business innovation modes and firms’ innovation performance, and it is one of the few empirical studies that focus on emerging markets. More importantly, this paper proposes a persuasive explanation framework for understanding the heterogeneous impacts of the combined STI and DUI mode of innovation on firms’ innovation performance. This is the first study that examines the moderating effect of IT on the relationship between business innovation modes and a firm’s innovation performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the effect of load on the tribological behaviour of Cu-based composites, so as to obtain a suitable applied load on these composites.

Design/methodology/approach

Cu-based composites were prepared by powder sintering with direct current electric current heating and tested by Universal Mechanical Test-3 with a ball-on-disk at room temperature.

Findings

The results showed that Cu-based composites are might suitable for working under low load. There is only mild damage on the surface under a load of 2 N. While it has microcracks and shows signs of cavitation at a certain depth at 20 N and 50 N. In addition, it is evident that there are three zones in the cross-section of the matrix, namely, a mechanical mixing layer, ceramic layer and substrate, respectively.

Originality/value

There are two wear mechanisms at different loads, and the evolution of worn surfaces with sliding time is also involved. Thus, the developed material can be used for light load sliding electrical contact material applications.
