Abstract

Purpose

The goal of this study is to investigate how the development efficiency of restaurant companies' products of their suppliers, supplier–supplier connection, design quality and adaptation affect the supply chain performance (SCP) of restaurant companies.

Design/methodology/approach

We use the stratified random-sampling method for this study. We mailed the research questionnaire to the managers in the cases where they could be identified; a total of 1,063 questionnaires were sent by mail and a useable response of 156 fully completed questionnaires was received.

Findings

When the supplier has good development efficiency of restaurant companies' products, they can comply with the requirements of the budget project, and then, finally adapt to the restaurant companies to strengthen mutual relations of coexistence; suppliers with a good connection can make restaurant companies willing to go along with them.

Research limitations/implications

The limitation of this study was that the different types of suppliers were not compared, and some restaurants without scaled operations may have different effects on the result.

Practical implications

The supplier–supplier connection is established when the suppliers or companies have generated important decisions. The suppliers will cope with the restaurant companies to make the delivery procedure more unhindered and invest in highly specialized equipment in the relationship and finally, improve the SCP.

Originality/value

This study focuses on the restaurant companies in partnership: how to cooperate with the suppliers to make good supply efficiency, and thus enhance the SCP of the restaurant companies. Overall, the results of the study have provided reliable instruments for operationalizing the key effect constructs in the analysis of operational performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore pure squeeze elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) motion of circular contacts with micropolar lubricants under constant load. The proposed model can reasonably calculate the pressure distributions, film thicknesses and normal squeeze velocities during the pure squeeze process.

Design/methodology/approach

The transient modified Reynolds equation is derived in polar coordinates using micropolar fluids theory. The finite difference method and the Gauss–Seidel iteration method are used to solve the transient modified Reynolds equation, the elasticity deformation equation, load balance equation and lubricant rheology equations simultaneously.

Findings

The simulation results reveal that the effect of the micropolar lubricant is equivalent to enhancing the lubricant viscosity. As the film thickness is enlarged, the central pressure and film thickness for micropolar lubricants are larger than those of Newtonian fluids under the same load in the elastic deformation stage. The greater the coupling parameter (N), the greater the maximum central pressure. However, the smaller the characteristic length (L), the greater the maximum central pressure. The time needed to achieve maximum central pressure increases with increasing N and L.

Originality/value

A numerical method for general applications was developed to investigate the effects of the micropolar lubricants at pure squeeze EHL motion of circular contacts under constant load.

Abstract

This study investigated students’ perceptions of work values and occupational choice propensity. A total of 311 hospitality majors at four different universities in Taiwan were analyzed in the study. The work value inventory (WVI) scale, containing 45 attributes, developed by Super, was used to assess students’ perceptions of work values. The study found “supervisory relations”, “work surroundings”, and “way of life” were the most important work values among respondents. Three mutually exclusive clusters of respondents were identified. This research suggests a longitudinal study measuring students’ perceptions of work value before and after entering the workforce.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how marketing capability, dysfunctional conflict, and relationship value affect relational benefits through the relational proclivity between suppliers and initiators in a group-buying web site.

Design/methodology/approach

The initiators selected were those who conducted group buying more than ten times in the group-buying web site. In total, 9,000 invitation e-mails were sent to initiators, of which 389 were returned; the model and hypotheses were tested by using structural equation modeling.

Findings

In online group buying, initiators can know about a new product only through the web site; the marketing capability of suppliers and the relationship value of initiators are positively associated with the relational proclivity between suppliers and initiators. And, the results indicate that the dysfunctional conflict of initiators is not positively associated with the relational proclivity between suppliers and initiators. Finally, The relational proclivity between suppliers and initiators is positively associated with the relational benefit between initiators and buyers.

Practical implications

The supplier and the initiator can work together in brainstorming new products; moreover, initiators can assist suppliers by helping them identify buyers’ demands and giving them relevant feedback.

Social implications

The suppliers’ marketing capability is important for initiators because it can help increase the latter’s ability to catch buyers’ attention. In addition, the initiator and supplier together can think about product innovation and new product designs.

Originality/value

Initiators, as key persons in the group-buying process, serve as a bridge between suppliers and buyers and have a positive impact on group buying. The findings suggest that certain facets of initiators are helpful in explaining the expected product performance of buyers.

A special event requiring little capital for development is regarded as a unique type of attractions. Art festival is a popular form among all special events, famous example including Edinburgh Festival in England. However, the literature on the measurement of successful factors of art festivals is limited. This study uses Chiayi International Band Festival for a case study to evaluate performance factors of art festivals. The performance attributes are developed based on Kotler's Three Levels of Product framework. Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) is used to evaluate the performance attributes perceived by the visitors. Further, a SWOT analysis is deployed to provide managerial strategies and implications.

Abstract

Using Chiang Mai Night Safari, Thailand as a case, this research is to understand the relationship between service quality, place attachment, tourist satisfaction, and tourist loyalty. A two-stage sampling approach is used while proportionate stratified sampling is applied to determine the strata sample size. A convenient sampling approach selects the participants within each stratum that involves choosing every element after a random start. Four hundred of 450 questionnaires are usable and analyzed the study. The result suggests an effective intermediary between service quality and tourist satisfaction. This study also adds managerial implications concerning service/product differentiation and competitive advantage over competitors. Meanwhile, future studies on destination personality uniqueness of destination emotions are suggested.

Abstract

Purpose

Data collection from inbound tourists is a repetitive activity. This paper's main purpose is to show that, unless something useful about the nature of change is being established, repetitious collection of data from, for example, inbound visitors results in ineffective accumulation of data. The paper also aims to elucidate what it means for data to be ineffective for practical application or theory development.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach was to examine three years of data from inbound visitors to Taiwan to consider what would make data collection more effective.

Findings

Collecting many specific variables relating to travel by inbound tourists can result in recognizing segments and other matters important for applied research or theory development. Analysis shows detailed information can have limited use and high cost when different details apply to different segments. After identifying segments to study, effective information collection can require segment specific questioning, special sampling and segment specific studies.

Originality/value

While various countries conduct special studies, annual collection of a wide variety of information from inbound tourists is a common practice. This research provides new perspectives on why some data collection practices should be modified.

Abstract

While Merger & Acquisition (M&A) activity has reached unprecedented levels over recent years, M&A failure rates remain high. Yet, there is growing evidence that private equity funds show high success rates. As little is known about the differences between different types of buyers, and only scant information exists on private equity funds’ operations, we inductively explore the reasons for their outperformance. In this qualitative study, we identify three characteristics (i.e., organizational set-up, private equity investors’ professional identities, and an integrative work approach), which we brought together into a theoretical framework that explains how private equity professionals can enable better M&A performance. Finally, our findings underline the effectiveness of specific incentivization approaches applied in private equity funds.
