Abstract

This paper explores the use of inter‐organisational systems (IOS) and the impact they have on flexibility. The experiences of ten organisations that constitute two value chains enrich and extend previous survey findings. The paper first defines flexibility, arguing that it has four dimensions: temporal, range, intention and focus. It then investigates inter‐organisational systems, assessing how they impact on organisational flexibility. The paper also demonstrates how the case firms perceive flexibility. Next the types of IOS used are outlined, followed by a discussion on how IOS technology affects flexibility. An analysis of the impact of IOS on the flexibility of the complete value chain is presented and conclusions drawn.

In a recent article dealing with the crimes against humanity committed by Germany, The Daily Telegraph remarks that thousands of innocent men, women, and little children murdered in cold blood by airship and submarine appeal for vengeance. The acts of Germany from the early days of the war onwards have filled decent‐minded people with feelings of loathing, and it is well that the last bonds uniting the two nations should be severed. This is no ordinary war. It has cut a deep chasm between the British and German peoples. By every means in our power we must remove, root and branch, those enemy influences in our midst which, by a process of “peaceful penetration,” were undermining our social, financial, and industrial power.

Abstract

This paper investigates the reasons underpinning the diverging adoption rates of different types of inter‐organisational systems (IOS) amongst small‐ to medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs). It explores the evolution of IOS from traditional proprietary and closed systems to Internet‐based open, flexible systems. It illustrates, through the study of 25 SMEs, that the emergence of new Internet‐based IOS provides SMEs with a rich set of technologies that may fundamentally change the technological perspective of SMEs from reluctant, reactive, slow implementers of technology to enthusiastic, proactive, rapid innovators of technology. The paper suggests that positive experiences by SMEs of Web‐based electronic commerce and the continued desire of larger firms to achieve full compliance with their IOS will dramatically increase the adoption rate of Web‐enabled IOS.

Today many young people are choosing to become vegetarian. Others are finding meatless meals appetising and attractive as they make a conscious effort to eat more healthily. So this year the Kraft Nutrition Award judges asked senior competitors to imagine they were having a vegetarian friend to stay and to plan a day's meals of breakfast, a packed lunch and special occasion meal for the evening. The twelve finalists were then invited to the Kraft kitchens in Cheltenham to prepare a few of their chosen dishes and to answer questions to test their overall knowledge of food, nutrition and healthy eating.

The aim of this overview is to reflect on the family resemblances between psychogeography and marketing history.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this overview is to reflect on the family resemblances between psychogeography and marketing history.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is informally predicated on the perspectives and philosophies of literary theory in general and New Historicism in particular.

Findings

Using exemplar excerpts from salient published works, marketing’s hitherto overlooked psychogeographical traditions are contemplated and celebrated, the sterling contributions of Stanley C. Hollander above all.

Research limitations/implications

Like poets who don’t know it, marketing historians are unsung contributors to the psychogeographical corpus. There is much more that can be done, however, especially in relation to works of imaginative literature.

Originality/value

This paper aims to uncover past achievements not advance the future agenda.

Abstract

The Milk and Dairies (Scotland) Order, 1925.—This Order, framed under Section 12 of the Act, and applying to Scotland as a whole, was issued along with the model dairy byelaws. It prescribed the form of register of dairies and dairymen, and contained provisions for the ascertainment of infectious disease at dairies, for the prevention of contamination of milk at railway stations, on the street, by means of unsuitable conveyances or unsuitable surroundings, or through insulticient protection from dust or exposure. The colouring or thickening of cream was prohibited by the Order; me use of wooden vessels, except for buttermilk, was prohibited; milk vessels for transit were required to nave marked on them the name and address of the owner, to have a proper lid, and to be locked or sealed. The Order also filled a gap in the administrative provisions of the Act by requiring every person about a dairy, if he became aware that any person in his household was suffering from an infectious disease, to notify the dairyman immediately. The dairyman must then notify the medical officer of health.
