Abstract

Purpose

A surge in demand for ethical products, including cruelty-free products, has been well documented in recent years, with direct ramifications for businesses. This trend towards ethical consumption seemed to be swiftly replicated in Eastern countries, especially in South Asian nations, as a result of westernisation. Based on the theory of planned behaviour and the concept of the attitude-behaviour gap, this study aims to investigate the impact of westernisation on the purchase intention of cruelty-free cosmetic products.

Design/methodology/approach

A positivist research paradigm was utilised in this study. Accordingly, an online self-administered questionnaire was shared among 242 consumers of cosmetic products in Sri Lanka in order to collect responses. The statistical techniques of correlation analysis, the Sobel test and moderator regression analysis have been utilised in this study.

Findings

It was found that there seems to be a positive impact of westernisation and the cruelty-free purchase intention of consumers. Moreover, consumer empowerment appears to mediate this relationship, while the attitude behaviour gap tends to further impact the relationship between consumer empowerment and the purchase intention of cruelty-free products.

Originality/value

This study seems to shed light upon the impact of westernisation on the purchase intention of consumers, especially from an ethical dimension and this study is likely to extend existing studies which have focussed on consumer empowerment, attitude-behaviour gap as well as the theory of planned behaviour, especially in the context of South Asia, where there seems to be a dearth of such investigations. Moreover, this study has attempted to contextualise the construct of “Westernisation” to the South Asian region in line with the tone set by an editorial article Dewasiri et al. (2021).

Abstract

Academic integrity is of great importance to insure a consistent determination of what constitutes plagiarism across regions of the world. Academic integrity research spans a global scale and regardless of where the researcher is from, they are building on a pool of research findings that have no physical boundaries. Basic agreed upon research standards and fundamentals must be established to ensure the validity and reliability of the body of academic research. Problematic to the situation are differences in cultural definitions of what constitutes plagiarism. Therefore, this study aimed to build the body of knowledge on the current condition of plagiarism levels as well as perform a sample comparison of some patterns in Eastern and Western culture. A document analysis was conducted for two universities, one in the USA and one in Saudi Arabia. In addition, a survey was conducted in an academic context in Saudi Arabia to investigate students’ and faculty’s understanding of what constitutes plagiarism. It was predicted that Saudi Arabia is shifting towards a Westernized definition of plagiarism; results partially supported this hypothesis.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to illustrate the developmental and modernizational state management policies in the early Turkish Republic in the 1930s through the establishment of state-owned cotton textile factories in underdeveloped regions of the country. It analyzes the state’s industrial-cum-social engineering policies and their micro-level role in Turkish economic development.

Design/methodology/approach

To illustrate the government’s role in regional industrialization and modernization, this study uses an in-depth case analysis conducted in a sample of textile plants based on a microhistorical approach.

Findings

Turkey is considered among late developing countries. Following the War of Independence at the beginning of the 20th century, the new government focused on regional industrialization and social transformation through state-owned universal banks[1] acting as state agents of industrialization and modernization. Primary among them, Sümerbank constructed industrial plants in underdeveloped towns which subsequently became the nuclei of growing industrial centers of private enterprise. Sümerbank plants were also micro-level tools of westernization-based modernization of the society under the social engineering objectives of the new government.

Originality/value

This study uses a specific industrial policy measure (establishment of industrial plants) in explaining the state’s role in industrialization, regional development and social engineering. It sheds new light on the literature on state-led industrial-cum-modernization policies during earlier phases of economic development. It contributes to the international literature on the history of state management of economic and social development.

Abstract

As the interconnectedness of various nations and regions becomes more and more significant, international business people must devote increased attention to fostering long‐term co‐operation with their trading partners. This is not new, although it has been emphasised to varying degrees over the past generations. In this article various orientations of international business from the 18th century to the present will be examined. In general, the cult of progress has been profoundly influential since the Victorian era although such concepts have inhibited the ability to view other (especially developing) countries in broad non‐ethnocentric ways. In order to supplement such perspectives, a sampling of Third World intellectuals will be consulted, case studies of development will be mentioned, and anthropologists will be discussed.

Abstract

Purpose

This viewpoint adds context and variety to the “decolonizing international business” debate by engaging in a discussion of the decolonial thinking approach and proposing a broader framework for analysing the link between international business (IB) activities on the one hand and colonisation and decolonisation on the other. The purpose of this paper is to inspire a more intensive engagement of IB scholarship with issues related to colonisation and decolonisation.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper involves taking a reflexive review on recent calls to decolonise IB, contextualising and extending the decolonisation debate in the academic field of IB.

Findings

This paper argues that the current discussion of decolonisation should be extended beyond the decolonial thinking approach and its focus on knowledge and the cultural dimension towards a broader framework that covers both colonisation and decolonisation as well as the respective economic, political, social and cultural dimensions. It introduces the varieties of colonisation and decolonisation approach, which considers the complexities of the phenomenon and covers the economic, social, political and cultural dimensions.

Research limitations/implications

Through its focus on foreign market expansion, international trade, global value chains and formal and informal institutions in the business environment, the academic field of IB provides several starting points for research on the link between IB activities and colonisation and decolonisation. The decolonisation debate can be used to inspire future research in IB, for example, with respect to the role of multinational corporations in colonisation and neo-colonisation processes and the implications of the emerging multipolar world order for IB.

Practical implications

IB scholars will be better informed when engaging in discussions on decolonisation and the decolonise IB project. This paper suggests considering both colonisation and decolonisation processes as well as the respective economic, political, social and cultural dimensions in research and teaching. The varieties of colonisation and decolonisation approach provides a comprehensive and flexible alternative framework to analyse issues related to colonisation and decolonisation.

Social implications

A balanced view of the implications of colonisation and decolonisation with respect to economic, political, social and cultural dimensions may suitably be incorporated in the field of IB and contribute to tackling grand societal challenges. This applies likewise to past, current and future processes of colonisation and decolonisation.

Originality/value

This paper contextualises and adds a new perspective and variety to the current debate on decolonising IB. This is valuable for engaging in discussions on decolonisation and future conceptual and empirical research on the topic.

In these times of globalisation, distances are getting smaller, enhancing the interactions between people of different cultural backgrounds. This is especially true in the area of tourism, a field that is shaped by manifold communication activities. The enormous increases in the numbers of Chinese tourists visiting Europe and other Western destinations require building up intercultural competencies to minimise conflicts and promote mutual understanding. It is therefore necessary to question one’s own cultural view, which is why the debate surrounding de-Westernisation is of crucial importance. The metaphor of the atmosphere – in Chinese qifen – offers a helpful access point to strengthen mutual understanding, because it creates a bridge between eastern and western thinking. Paul Watzlawick (1967) developed his well-known five axioms of communication, the second of which states that every communication has both content and a relational aspect, and the latter classifies the former. This chapter shows why the atmospheric dimension of communication should be established as the third axiom in order to understand communication holistically.

Abstract

India gained her political independence in 1947 from British rule. The new democracy chose non‐alignment, installed a large national government and legislated protectionist policies, which kept out most foreign products that almost led to economic isolation. The political leaders believed that protectionism would make India self‐reliant and eventually improve the standard of living especially for the poorer Indians. While other Asian countries were encouraging foreign capital and multinationals, India was doing its best to keep them out (Business Asia, 2000). Although India moved towards self‐reliance, the lack of competition hindered the country’s own economic and technological developments. As a result the market was forced to accept local products that were often inferior or old‐fashioned. For example, until recently the leading car on India’s road was “Ambassador”, a reproduction of a British design from the early 1950s that was bulky and a gas‐guzzler.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the peculiarities of human resource management (HRM) practices in Kazakh firms and identify the factors that influence them. Attention is paid to analysis of the country-specific environment, which shapes the peculiarities of HRM and provides discussion on the respective Westernization or localization perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper argues that HRM practices are influenced by a number of factors, some of which are rather specific to Kazakhstan and some are common in a Commonwealth of Independent States’ context. The study uses exploratory research which includes the conduction of a survey, consisting of blocks of questions, for data collection.

Findings

The results show that despite dynamic economic growth of Kazakhstan’s economy, HRM practices are still in transition from those of Soviet heritage to ones that exist in Western multinational corporations. They cannot fully match the country’s needs for HRM development. Several recommendations for the future development of HRM in Kazakhstan are made.

Originality/value

The study examines the adaptation of HRM practices to the business environment in Kazakhstan.

Abstract

Meisen was a commercial term for a popular, widely distributed textile used by lower- and middle-class women and children for everyday wear (kimono and haori) or special or festive occasions, and by many people for coverlets and sitting cushions. The cloth was relatively inexpensive and therefore popular among a new and actively growing market sector during the first half of 20th century Japan - women of the working and middle classes. Meisen textiles – a silk or synthetic silk cloth woven with warp or weft threads that were patterned prior to the weaving process, displayed bright colors and bold designs that offered wearers a new identity. The aesthetics of this textile, considered “moderne” or “mod,” set meisen designs apart from the rest of Japanese traditional textiles, generally known for their sophistication and subtlety. The conspicuous popularity of these designs puzzles today’s viewers, both Japanese and Western. Written materials from the late Edo period until the early 1960s that promoted meisen and beauty posters published by Japanese textile makers illustrate how Westernization and industrialization pulled their country out of a medieval social structure into a modern capitalist one, wherein new marketing techniques emerged. Meisen textiles provide us with insight into Japan’s social and cultural climate during an interesting period of its recent history.
