Abstract

The “Snap back” problem of the micro‐cantilever remains one of the dominant failure mechanisms in the Micro Electro‐mechanical System (MEMS). By analyzing the Hamaker micro continuum medium and solid physics principle, the consistency model of Wigner‐Seitz (W‐S) continuum medium is presented. The gap revision coefficients of the body with the face‐centered cubic structure are derived, which include the attractive force and the repulsive one. The adhesion model of the 500 µ m X 1 µ m silicon micro‐cantilever coated by Au is established. The micro‐cantilever static relationship between the elastic force and the adhesion force is discussed. The reason of the microcantilever “snap back” problem, an instable balanced point, is discovered. Increasing the rigidity of the micro‐cantilever, a method to avoid the micro‐cantilever “snap back” to happen, is put forward, which improves MEMS structure design and enhances MEMS reliability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to predict the mechanical behavior of a piezoelectric nanoplate under shear stability by taking electric voltage into account in thermal environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Simplified first-order shear deformation theory has been used as a displacement field. Modified couple stress theory has been applied for considering small-size effects. An analytical solution has been taken into account for various boundary conditions.

Findings

The length scale impact on the results of any boundary conditions increases with an increase in l parameter. The effect of external electric voltage on the critical shear load is more than room temperature effects. With increasing aspect ratio the critical shear load decreases and external electric voltage becomes more impressive. By considering piezoelectric nanoplates, it is proved that the temperature rise cannot become a sensitive factor on the buckling behavior. The length scale parameter has more effect for more flexible boundary conditions than others. By considering nanosize, the consideration has led to much bigger critical load vs macro plate.

Originality/value

In the current paper for the first time the simplified first-order shear deformation theory is used for obtaining governing equations by using nonlinear strains for shear buckling of a piezoelectric nanoplate. The couple stress theory for the first time is applied on the nonlinear first-order shear deformation theory. For the first time, the thermal environment effects are considered on shear stability of a piezoelectric nanoplate.

A review is made of methods for calculating parameters characterizing crack tip behaviour in non‐linear materials. Convenient methods of calculating J‐integral type quantities are reviewed, classified broadly into two groups, as domain integrals and virtual crack extension techniques. In addition to considerations of how such quantities may be calculated by finite elements, assessment methods of conducting the actual incremental analyses are described.

Abstract

Purpose

Thermal buckling of double-layered piezoelectric nanoplates has been analyzed by applying an external electric voltage on the nanoplates. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

Double-layered nanoplates are connected to each other by considering linear van der Waals forces. Nanoplates are placed on a polymer matrix. A comprehensive thermal stress function is used for investigating thermal buckling. A linear electric function is used for taking external electric voltages into account. For considering the small-scale effect, the modified couple stress theory has been applied. An analytical solution has been used by taking various boundary conditions.

Findings

EEV has a considerable impacted on the results of various half-waves in all boundary conditions. By increasing EEV, the reduction of critical buckling temperature in higher half-waves is remarkably slower than lower half-waves. By considering long lengths, the effect of EEV on the critical temperature will be markedly decreased.

Originality/value

This paper uses electro-thermal stability analysis. Double-layered piezoelectric nanoplates are analyzed. A comprehensive thermal stress function is applied for taking into account critical temperature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to extend the bridge scale method (BSM) developed for granular materials with only the solid phase to that taking into account the effects of wetting process in porous continuum. The granular material is modeled as partially saturated porous Cosserat continuum and discrete particle assembly in the coarse and fine scales, respectively.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the mass and momentum conservation laws for the three phases, i.e. the solid skeleton, the pore water and the pore air, the governing equations for the unsaturated porous Biot-Cosserat continuum model in the coarse scale are derived. In light of the passive air pressure assumption, a reduced finite element model for the model is proposed. According to the decoupling of the fine and coarse scale calculations in the BSM, the unsaturated porous Cosserat continuum model using the finite element method and the discrete element model using the discrete element method for granular media are combined.

Findings

The numerical results for a 2D example problem of slope stability subjected to increasing rainfall along with mechanical loading demonstrate the applicability and performance of the present BSM. The microscopic mechanisms of macroscopic shear band developed in the slope are demonstrated.

Research limitations/implications

Do not account for yet the effects of unsaturated pore water in the fine scale.

Originality/value

The novel BSM that couples the Biot-Cosserat porous continuum modeling and the discrete particle assembly modeling in both coarse and fine scales, respectively, is proposed to provide a micro-macro discrete-continuum two-scale modeling approach for numerical simulations of the hydro-mechanical coupling problems in unsaturated granular materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The four stage model of Hayes and Wheelwright (H‐W) describing the strategic role of manufacturing function is widely accepted in the literature. However, there is little research that has examined the underlying factors of the H‐W model. This paper aims to fill this research gap by developing an instrument for measuring factors of strategic manufacturing effectiveness of a company based on the H‐W model.

Design/methodology/approach

The general principle of designing an instrument is followed in this paper. Attributes of strategic manufacturing effectiveness are identified from critical analysis of the original text of Wheelwright and Hayes, and Chase and Hayes. Then these attributes are grouped into four factors: catalysts of manufacturing initiatives; proactiveness of manufacturing function; attitude of top management towards manufacturing; and nature of manufacturing initiatives. Question for each attribute along continuum of four stages in the H‐W model is developed. The reliability and validity of the instrument are assessed through responses obtained from managers of 28 manufacturing units.

Findings

The empirical evidence supports that the proposed instrument has quite good reliability (Cronbach's α for different factors in the range of 0.575 to 0.705) and validity (multiple correlation coefficient between factors and manufacturing performance of 0.801).

Practical implications

This instrument can be used to position the companies along the continuum of four stages. Also, this can help managers assess the strengths and weaknesses in manufacturing for making the improvements.

Originality/value

This study is one of its kind which focuses on the development of an instrument to assess the strategic role of manufacturing based on the H‐W model.

His publications include several books over 50 refereed book chapters and articles in academic journals. His particular research and teaching interests include education equity and policy.Eve Gregory is a Professor in the Department of Educational Studies at Goldsmiths’ College, University of London She joined the Department of Educational Studies in 1987, after having taught for nine years in schools and two years at Nene College, Northampton. During her years at Goldsmiths, she has co-ordinated language and literacy programmes for the BA Ed, taught across Early Years programmes and established student exchanges in France, Spain and Austria. Recent research has included studies on family literacy history, on siblings (both funded by the ESRC) and children’s home and school literacy practices (funded by the Leverhulme Trust).Kathleen Gwinner began her career in education as a high school art teacher in rural areas near Kansas City, Missouri and El Paso, Texas, and then in Houston’s urban schools. Travel and a continuing interest in art history prompted her to return to university for a Masters degree in European history, and she subsequently taught history and art history courses at private and public schools with a great variety of student populations. This paper aims to present recently published resources on library instruction and information literacy providing an introductory overview and a selected annotated bibliography of publications covering all library types.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces and annotates English-language periodical articles, monographs, dissertations, reports and other materials on library instruction and information literacy published in 2018.

Findings

The paper provides a brief description of all 422 sources, and highlights sources that contain unique or significant scholarly contributions.

Originality/value

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.
