Abstract

Gives a bibliographical review of the finite element methods (FEMs) applied for the linear and nonlinear, static and dynamic analyses of basic structural elements from the theoretical as well as practical points of view. The range of applications of FEMs in this area is wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore aims to give the reader an encyclopaedic view on the subject. The bibliography at the end of the paper contains 2,025 references to papers, conference proceedings and theses/dissertations dealing with the analysis of beams, columns, rods, bars, cables, discs, blades, shafts, membranes, plates and shells that were published in 1992‐1995.

Abstract

Purpose

Cantilever plates subject to axial flow can lose stability by flutter and properties such as viscoelasticity and laminar friction affect dynamic stability. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the dynamic stability of viscoelastic cantilever plates subject to axial flow by using the differential quadrature method.

Design/methodology/approach

Equation of motion of the viscoelastic plate is derived by implementing Kelvin-Voigt model of viscoelasticity and applying inverse Laplace transformation. The differential quadrature method is employed to discretize the equation of motion and the boundary conditions leading to a generalized eigenvalue problem. The solution is verified using the existing results in the literature and numerical results are given for critical flow velocities

Findings

It is observed that higher aspect ratios lead to imaginary part of third frequency becoming negative and causing single-mode flutter instability. It was found that flutter instability does not occur at low aspect ratios. Moreover the friction coefficient is found to affect the magnitude of critical flow velocity, however, its effect on the stability behaviour is minor.

Originality/value

The effects of various problem parameters on the dynamic stability of a viscoelastic plate subject to axial flow were established. It was shown that laminar friction coefficient of the flowing fluid increases the critical fluid velocity and higher aspect ratios lead to single-mode flutter instability. The effect of increasing damping of viscoelastic material on the flutter instability was quantified and it was found that increasing viscoelasticity can lead to divergence instability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to deal with the study of free convection magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) boundary layer flow of an incompressible viscoelastic fluid along an inclined moving plate and heat transfer characteristics with prescribed quadratic power-law surface temperature.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing partial differential equations are transformed into non-dimensional, non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations which are solved numerically by robust Galerkin finite element method.

Findings

Numerical results for the dimensionless velocity and temperature profiles are displayed graphically for various physical parameters such as viscoelasticity, Prandtl number, angle of inclination parameter, magnetic and buoyancy parameter. The local Nusselt number is found to be the decreasing function of magnetic field parameter whereas it increases with increasing values of Prandtl number, viscoelastic parameter and buoyancy parameter.

Practical implications

The present problem finds significant applications in MHD power generators, cooling of nuclear reactors, thin film solar energy collector devices.

Originality/value

The objective of this work is to analyze the heat transfer of convective MHD viscoelastic fluid along a moving inclined plate with quadratic power law surface temperature. An extensively validated, highly efficient, variation finite element code is used to study this problem. The results are validated and demonstrated graphically.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the Blasius flat plate with viscous dissipation in the presence of suction or injection effects in the boundary layer of a viscoelastic fluid.

Design/methodology/approach

The governing partial differential equations are derived as a first order ordinary differential equation using similarity (Blasius) variables. Velocity profiles, temperature profiles, skin friction parameters, and heat transfer parameters are computed numerically for various values of the viscoelastic parameter K, the suction or injection parameter f w , the Prandtl number Pr, the Eckert number Ec, and the moving parameter λ.

Findings

The effects of the viscoelastic, moving, and suction/injection parameters on the skin friction and heat transfer of the flat plate are studied. The effects of these parameters on the velocity and temperature profiles are also presented for 0≤Pr≤3.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this important classical problem has not been studied before for the case of a viscoelastic fluid. Thus, the results are original and new for this type of fluid.

The purpose of this study is to investigate viscoelastic properties for the constitutive equation in terms of distributed-order derivatives.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate viscoelastic properties for the constitutive equation in terms of distributed-order derivatives.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors considered the steady oscillatory shear flow between two parallel plates (one is fixed and another oscillates in its own plane), and then examined the effects of different forms of the order-weight functions.

Findings

The constitutive equation in terms of distributed-order derivatives can characterize viscoelastic properties. The order-weight functions can effectively describe viscoelasticity.

Originality/value

Model the viscoelastic constitutive equation in terms of distributed-order derivatives, where order-weight functions can select to respond viscoelastic properties.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to facilitate the engineering technical personnel to easily choose the appropriate vibration analysis model in the design of symmetry composite sandwich structure with composite face layers and viscoelastic core. Therefore, the applicable condition of two linear vibration models was obtained by considering the vibration analysis of three-layered sandwich structures.

Design/methodology/approach

Equilibrium equations of three kinds of vibration models were deduced using Hamilton’s principle and were solved using the closed-form Navier solution. Then, numerical results were compared with those reported in the literature to verify the accuracy of the deduced calculating formulas.

Findings

The applicable conditions of two linear vibration models are obtained by examining the influence of the ratio of length to total thickness (q) and that of viscoelastic thickness to total thickness (c) on the solutions. Two cases are considered about the applicable conditions of two linear vibration models based on the error analysis.

Originality/value

The paper obtains the application conditions of two linear vibration models by using error analysis for the first time and provides the reference for engineering staff to easily choose a suitable vibration model to design a symmetry composite sandwich plate.

Abstract

Contact problems are among the most difficult ones in mechanics. Due to its practical importance, the problem has been receiving extensive research work over the years. The finite element method has been widely used to solve contact problems with various grades of complexity. Great progress has been made on both theoretical studies and engineering applications. This paper reviews some of the main developments in contact theories and finite element solution techniques for static contact problems. Classical and variational formulations of the problem are first given and then finite element solution techniques are reviewed. Available constraint methods, friction laws and contact searching algorithms are also briefly described. At the end of the paper, a bibliography is included, listing about seven hundred papers which are related to static contact problems and have been published in various journals and conference proceedings from 1976.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a numerical (finite-difference) model exploring phase and group velocities of SH-wave propagation in initially stressed transversely isotropic poroelastic multi-layered composite structures and initially stressed viscoelastic-dry-sandy multi-layered composite structures in two distinct cases.

Design/methodology/approach

With the aid of relevant constitutive relations, the non-vanishing equations of motions for the propagation SH-wave in the considered composite structures have been derived. Haskell matrix method and finite-difference scheme are adopted to deduce velocity equation for both the cases. Stability analysis for the adopted finite-difference scheme has been carried out and the expressions for phase as well as group velocity in terms of dispersion-parameter and stability-ratio have been deduced.

Findings

Velocity equations are derived for the propagation of SH-wave in both the composite structures. The obtained results are matched with the classical results for the case of double and triple-layered composite structure along with comparative analysis. Stability analysis have been carried out to develop expressions of phase as well as group velocity in terms of dispersion-parameter and stability-ratio. The effect of wavenumber, dispersion parameter along with initial-stress, porosity, sandiness, viscoelasticity, stability ratio, associated with the said composite structures on phase, damped and group velocities of SH-wave has been unveiled.

Originality/value

To the best of authors’ knowledge, numerical modelling and analysis of propagation characteristics of SH-wave in multi-layered initially stressed composite structures composed of transversely isotropic poroelastic materials and viscoelastic-dry-sandy materials remain unattempted inspite of its importance and relevance in many branches of science and engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

For general quasi-static problems of viscoelastic functionally graded materials (VFGMs), the correspondence principle can be applied only for simple structures with a closed form solution of the corresponding elastic problem exists. In this paper, a new symplectic approach, according to the correspondence principle between linearly elastic and viscoelastic solids, is proposed for quasi-static VFGMs.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, by employing the method of separation of variables, all the fundamental eigenvectors of the governing equations are obtained analytically. Then, the satisfactions of boundary conditions prescribed on the ends and laterals are discussed based on the variable substitution and the eigenvector expansion methods.

Findings

In the numerical examples, some boundary condition problems are given. The results show the local effects due to the displacement constraints.

Originality/value

The paper provides an innovative technique for quasi-static problems of VFG Ms. Its correctness and the efficiency are well suported by numerical results.
