Abstract

Purpose

The industrial robot has high repeatability but low accuracy. With the industrial robot being widely used in complicated tasks, e.g. arc welding, offline programming and surgery, accuracy of the robot is more and more important. Robot calibration is an efficient way to improve the accuracy. Previous methods such as using coordinate measurement machines, laser trackers or cameras are limited by the cost, complex operation or the resolution. The purpose of this paper is to propose an approach and calibration equipment to address these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed method relies mainly upon a laser pointer attached on the end‐effector and single position‐sensitive devices (PSD) arbitrarily located on the workcell. The automated calibration procedure (about three minutes) involves aiming the laser lines loaded by the robot towards the center of the PSD surface from various robot positions and orientations. The localization is guaranteed by precise PSD feedback servoing control, which means physically the intersections of each pair of laser lines (virtual lines) are on the same point. Based on the untouched single‐point constraint, the robot joint offset calibration is implemented. Using the authors' proposed approach, a portable, low‐cost, battery‐powered, wireless and automated calibration system was implemented. Error analysis was conducted on the system.

Findings

The localization error of the developed calibration system is within 2 μm. The errors in joint space are magnified in PSD plane, and consequently the resolution in the joint space is improved. The standard deviation of the identified parameters was small (10‐2), indicating the stability of the calibration method. Both simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the proposed method and demonstrate the developed calibration system can identify joint offset with uncalibrated laser tool parameters.

Originality/value

The paper shows how a portable calibration system for joint offset of industrial robots was developed and how the goal of fast, automated, low‐cost, portable, and high precision calibration methods for joint offset was achieved.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a “Reconfiguration Methodology” in manufacturing systems that they can become more economically sustainable and can operate efficiency and effectively. This methodology will allow customized flexibility and capacity not only in producing a variety of products (parts) and with changing market demands, but also in changing and reengineering the system itself.

Design/methodology/approach

Reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) is a philosophy or strategy which was introduced during the last decade to achieve agility in manufacturing systems. Until now, the RMS philosophy was based changing activities such routing, planning, programming of machines, controlling, scheduling, and physical layout or materials handling system. But the RMS concept can be based on the needed reconfiguration level (NRL), operational status of production systems, and new circumstances (NC). The NRL measure is based on the agility level of the manufacturing systems which is based on technology, people, management, and manufacturing strategies. The components of the manufacturing system design (MSD) consist of production system design, plant layout system, and material handling system. Operational status of production systems includes machine capability (flexibility) and capacity (reliability), production volume or demand, and material handling equipment in addition to the plant layout. The NC are also consisting of new product, developing the existing ones, and changing in demand.

Findings

Reconfiguration manufacturing systems from one period to another period is highly desired and is considered as a novel manufacturing philosophy and/or strategy toward creating new sustainable manufacturing systems. A new reconfiguration methodology for the manufacturing systems will be analyzed and proposed. Two Case studies will be introduced.

Originality/value

The suggestion of a new methodology of reconfiguration including the NRL (configurability index) and the operational status of manufacturing systems with respect to any circumstance is highly considered. The reconfiguration methodology also provides a framework for sustainability in the manufacturing area which mainly focussed on manufacturing systems design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to conduct a systematic bibliometric analysis of reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) articles using VOSviewer to identify their research themes and future research trends and investigate their interconnectivity. This paper also aims to identify prominent authors, publishers, organizations, countries and their collaborations in the RMS domain.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the Scopus database is used to retrieve 454 RMS articles published between 1988 and 2020. These articles are then investigated using VOSviewer to determine their interconnectedness, clusters and citations, as well as to generate a map based on text data. The network visualization diagrams and clusters obtained for documents, authors, sources, organizations and countries are explored to determine the current state and future trends in RMS research.

Findings

A bibliometric analysis of selected articles is performed, and current research hotspots in this domain are identified. This work also investigates the current status and future research trends in this domain. The work presented also identifies top researchers, journals, countries and documents in RMS.

Practical implications

This paper can provide academics, researchers and practitioners with additional research insights. At the same time, the research trends identified here can help to direct research and benefit researchers.

Originality/value

The study is the first attempt to review selected documents in the RMS domain using bibliometric analysis tools, and it presents a method for collecting articles, organizing them and analyzing the data.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present an organized review of existing research on reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS). The paper considers majority of the prominent research articles in the domain of RMS published ever since RMS was envisaged in 1997.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper systematically reviews, classifies and analyses the published literature on postulations and design of RMSs. The general observations from the literature and research gaps recognized thereon are highlighted at the end of each section/sub-section.

Findings

The paper reveals important aspects related to RMS research since its inception. It also recognizes the areas of RMS research requiring more focus. The study also highlights open issues and future directions for further research.

Practical implications

The literature in the domain of RMS has so far been narrow. This paper reviews the prominent research in this field and presents an overview of its conceptual developments and various mathematical models for the RMS design and its optimization so far developed by the researchers. Further, manufacturing advancements and future directions have also been proposed for the efficient execution of RMS paradigm in manufacturing industries.

Originality/value

The paper provides an organized listing of published research work in the field of RMS. This work will provide an insight to the researchers, practitioners and others related directly or indirectly to this field to develop and understand better strategies for supervising and controlling the smooth implementation of RMS.

Purpose

Facing keen worldwide competition, it is not enough for companies to pursue customer satisfaction; they must actively pursue customer delight. This paper seeks to design a work‐in‐process (WIP) exception handling system (WIPEHS) not simply measuring on‐time delivery performance for managers to take necessary improvement activities. It helps managers detect abnormal WIP levels in advance, trigger rectifying actions and finally notify pertinent people to coordinate roots causes and preventive means.

Design/methodology/approach

The structure of WIPEHS is proposed and then constructed with a soft package, Vigilance. A typical semiconductor factory is built and production data are simulated to evaluate the effectiveness of WIPEHS.

Findings

Collecting and analyzing results from the simulated typical semiconductor factory, the paper finds that the proposed system can effectively improve on‐time delivery performance; and that durations from a WIP exception detected a WIP exception back to normal and durations between two successive WIP exceptions significantly.

Practical implications

It helps factories outperform due dates, achieving significantly higher performance than prior performance without the production exception handling system, which should greatly please customers.

Originality/value

The proposed WIPEHS provide a total solution for undesirable production variations potentially harmful to due‐date performance. It anticipates WIP exception, notifies pertinent recipients, tracks the progress of exception resolution, and provides a forum for discussion of the root causes.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide feasible countermeasures for the application of lean manufacturing in automatic sand casting workshops to optimize production line balance.

Design/methodology/approach

A production line balance optimization model for sand casting workshops is proposed. The value stream mapping (VSM) approach is applied to diagnose the problems in the production process. An optimization scheme is established based on eliminate, combine, rearrange, simplify and increase theory and Kanban management method. Further, simulation is done to compare current VSM and future VSM.

Findings

After implementing the proposed model, findings indicated that the idle time of equipment was effectively reduced, the line of balance of the production line was increased by 44.7%, the production lead time was shortened by 60.3% and the production capacity was increased by 50.0%.

Research limitations/implications

Application of the optimization model in this study is limited to sand casting workshops that have realized automatic or semi-automatic production.

Originality/value

This paper provides an optimization model for the implementation of lean manufacturing in sand casting workshops and provides a reference case that reflects the actual application of lean manufacturing tools in a real situation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the possible cooperation options in terms of empty container repositioning across alliances for shipping lines based in the Greater China Region (China, Taiwan and Hong Kong SAR), after the three global shipping alliances reformed in April 2017.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper offers a comprehensive review to the latest shipping alliances and introduces a new cooperative dimension among shipping lines based in the Greater China Region which are member of different shipping alliances.

Findings

Cooperation among shipping lines in the Greater China Region in terms of empty container handling is possible in terms of resource sharing among shipping lines across alliances that fosters mega shipping line formation in the future.

Practical implications

Shipping lines should review their current empty container repositioning strategies and explore cooperation among non-alliance members having headquarters in proximity for quick responsiveness in empty container repositioning plan and execution.

Originality/value

This is a research directly analyzing the empty repositioning plan of the major shipping lines and their major service routes, fleet and containers.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this paper is to improve a web content management system (WCMS) product line for future implementations by identifying software commonalities in WCMS‐based web applications. WCMS plays a central role in modern web application development: most large public and internal web sites are based on a WCMS foundation. If we can improve the implementation process, the effectiveness and efficiency of web application development will increase significantly.

Design/methodology/approach

This research identifies reusable solutions from existing WCMS implementations using problem diagrams and structured goal modeling. From configurations were matched with atomic e‐business models by linking them to the strategic competencies through bottom‐up goal modeling. A designed method was constructed on how requirements can be elicited for WCMS implementations using goal modeling and problem frames.

Findings

The resulting method provides insight in relevant e‐business models and their relation to software product lines. Moreover, the approach is applied in a WCMS study which demonstrates its applicability.

Practical implications

The practical implications of this research is twofold: WCMS developers now have a method to improve their product line based on e‐business models; and requirements engineers implementing WCMS can use this model to apply reusable software and prioritize requirements. Both will potentially have a large impact on the effectiveness of implementations since most web applications are developed with WCMS.

Originality/value

The paper presents a novel approach for efficient and effective identification of software commonalities. This research is part of the web engineering method that focuses on development of web applications based on WCMSs.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary aim of this paper is to investigate the evolutionary process and collaboration within Taiwan's cut‐flower supply chains. The paper also go on to discuss the enablement of supply chain coordination through information technology (IT) adoption and network effects, as well as performance improvements achieved by the introduction of the wholesale information sharing hotline (WISH) system.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper examines the evolutionary process in Taiwan's cut‐flower supply chains from a macro‐study perspective, based upon primary data obtained from in‐depth interviews. The paper also applies multiple regression analyses from a micro‐study perspective, in order to gain insights into the evolution of market share within the supply chains, thereby facilitating the investigation of the effectiveness of the WISH system.

Findings

The results reveal that the auction houses are heavily dependent upon reliable sources of supply, and that in the earlier stages of the evolutionary process, they played a mediating role in the formulation of auction lines based upon retailer demand through the adoption of the e‐auction mechanism. Since then, the operational performance of the auction houses has been improved considerably, with horizontal coordination being supported by information sharing through the WISH system. The network effect is found to have a positive correlation with the number of participants within the system.

Originality/value

This paper focuses specifically on the evolutionary process of the cut‐flower supply chains in Taiwan, examining the simultaneous achievement of both vertical and horizontal collaboration through the advancement of IT.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the circulation of moist silica sand to provide appropriate feeding modes and references for designing the coating device when printing sand mold with line-forming.

Design/methodology/approach

First, this paper briefly introduces sand mold printing with line-forming and the circulation problem brought by moist silica sand. The outlet may be choked due to poor flowability and solidification characteristic, resulting in poor dimensional tolerance and even production failure. Then, based on circulation modeling, a series of feeding modes is proposed to guarantee adequate feeding, avoid solidification and ensure successful fabrication. Finally, the GUI of control software is developed, including slicing, path planning and the function of virtual printing.

Findings

Several feeding modes of moist silica sand are put forward to avoid the choke.

Research limitations/implications

The authors will further investigate the flowability of furan no-bake sand based on experiments.

Originality/value

This paper is going to provide references for the novel design of nozzle, prototype and sand mold printing, influencing significantly on mold manufacturing and the casting industry. This research applies equally to equipment having the circulation of high moist particles with solidification features.
