Abstract

Fieldwork in several “best practice” companies showed that the important performance objectives sought to fulfil each company’s manufacturing strategy were achieved through the use of initiatives and supporting enablers. A manufacturing excellence framework shows how these initiatives and enablers combine to support manufacturing excellence. This work explores the validity and usefulness of this framework by means of a postal survey conducted across a wide base of manufacturing companies in the UK. The nature of the questionnaire is outlined together with the results from the analysis of the data obtained from the questionnaire. The results show the framework will contribute significantly to manufacturing excellence. Also when the framework is used to identify those initiatives that are crucial to the fulfilment of the manufacturing strategy then the company’s overall business strategy is more effectively executed.

Abstract

The role of maufacturing within the organisation, world class manufacturing (WCM) and manufacturing strategy are outlined. The need for a practical method to establish the steps required for the implementation of excellence within manufacturing is identified. Focus is on pilot studies conducted at “best practice” companies to establish the existence of a generic process that maufacturing companies can follow in order to become excellent. The knowledge obtained is used to develop a framework for pursuing manufacturing excellence. The framework shows how initiatives and their enablers combine to directly link the strategic level of the organisation down to those activities at the operating level of the business which contribute most to manufacturing excellence.

Abstract

This article details how survey evidence of aggregate planning practice can be modelled to develop a functional objective search (FOS) system which incorporates the strategies and multiple objectives of the aggregate planning problem. The system is structured to be interactive in use and capable of providing near optimal, low cost planning decisions which reflect different functional interests. The FOS system is validated using data concerning a paint company taken from the literature. A wider range of aggregate planning variables and issues are also explored during 125 test runs in which the system is used to consider varying functional emphasis, variable worker productivity and profit.

Abstract

Aggregate planning approaches as presented in the literature are rarely used in practice. The objective of this research is to survey the aggregate planning practice of manufacturing companies in the UK, with the aim of designing more realistic aggregate planning systems. The results gathered provide useful insights into current practice, including the ranking of management decision alternatives, changing functional involvement with key aggregate planning objectives, and views concerning the use of a proposed system of aggregate planning.

Abstract

Outlines the scope and application of three workshops and their particular uses in the manufacturing environment. Describes the approach taken in each of three workshops designed to improve manufacturing effectiveness. The workshops can be used in a linked integrative way and have been developed and tried and tested on managers and students of management. They are highly participative and interactive. Workshop 1 helps sift out those elements of the key support areas to manufacturing which are causing the company′s manufacturing to be ineffective. Workshop 2 highlights those areas of capability in a company which are impeding progress and improvements being made to those areas of concern identified in the company. Workshop 3 is concerned with the process of developing action plans to tackle the areas of concern and capability issues in the company and also examines the provision of skills, resources and degree of empowerment given to those who are expected to fulfil the action plans. Feedback shows that the participants found the workshops interesting, enjoyable, and stimulating; valuable vehicles for managerial and educational development and a direct and effective way of improving a company′s manufacturing effectiveness.

Abstract

A postal survey to manufacturing managers in six different industry sectors was conducted to ascertain their views on core competencies. Questions deemed important by the literature centred on establishing the level of understanding the manufacturing managers had on core competence and ascertaining if they operated in an environment where core competence could be built and enhanced. Their views were contrasted with those expressed in the current literature and it was concluded that manufacturing managers need to increase their knowledge and understanding of core competencies. To be more competitive they need to operate more in an outward/strategy driven way and develop a strategic architecture to enable their organisation to develop the necessary core competencies. Of the six manufacturing industries surveyed the machinery producers emerged as the strongest advocators for core competence development with the food industry having the least orientation towards their development. To assist in core competence management an Enabling core competence lens model was presented together with a framework for core competence maintenance.

Abstract

Evidence points to the need for a coherent, well‐communicated manufacturing strategy which establishes the best possible link between the competitive needs of the business and what needs to be done at the operational level in order to provide the business with a sustainable advantage over the competition. Presents a process of manufacturing strategy development which links the strategic needs of the business to the operational level in order to determine the operational areas of strategic concern in the company. Examines the effectiveness of a company′s capabilities, using a methodology for identifying the main impeders to improvements being made with respect to these particular areas of strategic concern.

Abstract

A postal survey to manufacturing managers in five different industry sectors was conducted to ascertain how manufacturing managers perceived their quality of working life. Questions asked centred on how motivated, rewarded, valued, empowered, career developed, satisfied with their job and their company the manufacturing managers considered themselves to be. Their views were contrasted with those expressed in the current literature and it was concluded that currently manufacturing managers believe themselves to be adequately valued, remunerated and motivated by their employing organisations. However their levels of esteem and job satisfaction, although satisfactory, could be improved through greater empowerment.
