This paper draws on primary research from two sources. First a major research project begun December 1991 on ‘Senior Managerial Competencies, Succession Planning and Organisation Development in the NHS’. The research aims to identify possible competence gaps between competences demonstrated and competences required in the light of restructuring the National Health Service. It therefore examines management development and organisation development in parallel at the strategic and operational levels. This is a two year project funded by the Department of Health. The second source is other research being undertaken within the new ‘Public Service Strategy and Organisation Group’ based at the Management School, Imperial College. Although the group are researching a variety of public sector organisations, including local authorities and education, this research paper focuses on the restructuring taking place in the health service.

The shared housing model has been used widely for many years in association with supported housing. It is the subject of debate among providers and commissioners, who may regard it as old‐fashioned and not conducive to independent living, but for some clients and organisations it continues to offer a positive option in helping alleviate loneliness and isolation. Current growth in the work of social landlords and their agents includes a wider range of client groups with a variety of aspirations and support needs. Shared housing may offer new opportunities to these groups. With the new emphasis on neighbourhoods and inclusion, does the shared housing model possess attributes that commend it to communities in new ways, or is it a model of the past? The article offers suggestions to enable shared housing to be evaluated as part of housing associations' business plans while keeping a focus on residents' views, as reflected in 25 case study locations.

In the shifting landscape of organisational computing, continuing developments in information technology have potentially major implications for managerial and technical roles, including the emergence of new ‘hybrid’ roles. As the emphasis in computer information systems shifts from relatively inflexible transaction processing systems to more flexible decision support systems, so the focus of attention has shifted from the effect of computerisation on workforce roles to the implications for managerial and technical personnel. Concerns with operational control and long‐range planning have given way to concerns with the integration of primary business functions and medium‐range ‘what if’ analysis, particularly in the information‐based sectors such as financial services, travel and tourism, and retailing.

Claims that, for the 1990s, images of careers are multidimensional and individualistic. Notes that employees are encouraged to take responsibility for their own self‐development, incorporate horizontal as well as vertical moves, and forge careers based on “employability”, i.e. learning, networking and reputation. Bases its arguments on the findings of a study into senior executives in the NHS, and explores the consequences of organizational restructuring for the careers of clinical, general and functional managers. Suggests that organizational and professional barriers exist to undermine the notion of the multidimensional career. Argues that prescriptive approaches to career self‐development need to take account of organizational context and that, to meet the challenges of careers in the 1990s, both the organization and the individual need to become more willing to take risks.

Assesses the potential of the Internet for delivering course material. Believes that the Internet will play a prominent role in education.

The paper provides a new definition of healthy and functional food considering the case of sorghum, which is dealing with environmental challenges, calling for exploration of eco-conscious consumers' behavior in the free-from food innovative market.

Through a systematic literature review and bibliometric analysis, this article offers a deep and broad outlook on a sustainable open innovations approach for agri-food systems. The bibliometric analysis includes a total of 198 scientific papers, deeply analyzed through Bibliometrix package.

Results show increasing academic interest in sustainable innovations for the agri-food system, where the relevance of the food-grade sorghum is noticed. An open innovation approach is called for to deal with environmental challenges.

Theoretically, the research offers a new definition of healthy and functional food in line with current environmental challenges. It also provides a deep literature review on eco-conscious consumers and food-grade sorghum as functional food in the context of the free-from food market.

This study aims to examine the antecedents of halal brand equity on destination brand equity (DBE) within the tourism sector. Although much has been done on halal tourism, the issue of halal and brand equity has received little attention in a non-Islamic state context.

Using the brand equity theory, 312 Muslim tourists were conveniently drawn from the Larabanga tourism site with the use of structural equation modelling technique to analyse the data.

The study revealed that halal brand awareness and halal value have positive and significant impact on DBE. Also, halal perceived brand quality and halal image had a negative but significant impact on DBE.

This research is on a country-specific halal brand equity tourism destination, which means that the findings cannot be generalized to other geographical areas.

The study provides an insight into halal tourism and destination equity, which is important for marketers, the ministry of tourism and local tourism officials to support halal tourism in a non-Islamic country.

This paper fills a gap by presenting the first comprehensive overview of halal brand equity research that enhances ongoing discussions in the hospitality and tourism field in a non-Islamic context and proposes priorities for future research.
