Briefly reviews previous literature by the author before presenting an original 12 step system integration protocol designed to ensure the success of companies or countries in their efforts to develop and market new products. Looks at the issues from different strategic levels such as corporate, international, military and economic. Abstract

This study proposes targeted modernization of the Department of Defense (DoD's) Joint Forces Ammunition Logistics information system by implementing the optimized innovative information technology open architecture design and integrating Radio Frequency Identification Device data technologies and real-time optimization and control mechanisms as the critical technology components of the solution. The innovative information technology, which pursues the focused logistics, will be deployed in 36 months at the estimated cost of $568 million in constant dollars. We estimate that the Systems, Applications, Products (SAP)-based enterprise integration solution that the Army currently pursues will cost another $1.5 billion through the year 2014; however, it is unlikely to deliver the intended technical capabilities.

Abstract

Purpose

Large-scale industrialization, growth and development have come at the cost of severe environmental degradation, primarily measured in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. Apart from the several measures taken to reduce enviornmental degradation, provision of private capital is a necessity apart from the public capital. There is a debate on impact of carbon dioxide emissions with increase in affluence, technology, population and renewable energy. The purpose of the study is to look into the role of private equity investment on renewable energy and technological patents.

Design/methodology/approach

The study extends the use of stochastic impact by regression on population, affluence and technology model to include another factor for investments and capital, i.e. private equity along with renewable energy, population, technology and GDP growth on carbon emissions for the BRICS countries. The time period for the study is from 2002 to 2021, and the relationship between the variables has been tested using pooled mean group/autoregressive distributed lag, fully modified ordinary least squares and panel quantile regression.

Findings

First, the results depict a log-run relationship between the variables across the panel using cointegration. Private equity investments do not have a significant impact on carbon emissions. The study proposes important policy implications. There are two schools of thought on the impact of private equity on carbon emissions. For example, inherently private equity investments come with higher stakes and a shorter holding period because of which their primary focus remains on having higher returns instead of responsible investing. However, as private equity adds up to capital, which leads to an increase in productivity and eventually higher economic growth, this could affect carbon emissions. This study supports the first thought. Additionally, renewable energy also affects carbon emissions positively. The policymakers should look into the role and intent of the private equity investors in green investments and invest in technologies and patents that can lead to energy consumption.

Originality/value

The paper is the first of its kind, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, to look into the impact of private equity on renewable energy and technological patents.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the specifications of sensors used in vehicle impact testing, especially in crash test dummies.

Design/methodology/approach

Describes the facilities of a UK vehicle test facility, then explores the design of crash test dummies and the sensors within them. Data collection and analysis techniques are reported.

Findings

The sensors incorporated in a crash test dummy must have the correct mass distribution so as not to affect its inertial behaviour. Dummies are designed for repeated crash testing. New sensor developments are expanding the range of measurements possible, and smaller, lower‐power‐dissipation and higher‐data‐density memory devices are facilitating a move towards data logging within the dummy.

Originality/value

This paper provides an insight into the world of crash testing, of general interest to scientists and engineers, and especially those who drive.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to contribute towards the debate about global access to COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.

Design/methodology/approach

The global scramble for COVID-19 vaccine and other related pharmaceutical products have once again exposed the limitations of the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS). High-income countries are claiming a lion’s share of the first available batches of the COVID-19 vaccine in total disregard of the consequences such approach would have on the low-income countries that lack both the manufacturing wherewithal and the financial resources to purchase the vaccine and other products needed to combat the pandemic. This paper reviews the existing TRIPS Flexibilities and analyses their limitations with respect to equitable access of pharmaceutical products in times of health emergencies. This paper then considers the unique challenges that have been brought to the fore by the COVID-19 pandemic. Finally, this paper analytically explores some options that have been proposed so far that the World Trade Organization (WTO) or governments can take in the immediate to near term to facilitate equitable access to COVID-19 pharmaceutical products and technologies. This research is non-empirical, desk-based research. It is, therefore, based on the literature review of existing body of work that is relevant to the topic under discussion. Mindful of the epistemological challenges that are always associated with desk-based research, part of the methodology of this work is to seek support from related empirical studies based on different philosophical underpinnings but that confirm the working hypothesis of this research.

Findings

This paper finds that there is still a need for a comprehensive reform of TRIPS Agreement to streamline the voluntary licencing system which is an important tool for low-income countries’ access to affordable pharmaceuticals. However, for purposes of dealing with COVID-19, WTO members should consider establishing pooled Licencing Facilities and procurement strategies via already existing political, economic or regional trade groupings.

Originality/value

This research is original. All sources have been acknowledged. This research synthesises different research papers and applies different viewpoints to the debate on the impact of the TRIPS Agreement on equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, therapeutics and diagnostics.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a model to estimate the value of information generated by and stored within vehicles to help people, businesses and researchers.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors provide a taxonomy for data within connected vehicles, as well as for actors that value such data. The authors create a monetary value model for different data generation scenarios from the perspective of multiple actors.

Findings

Actors value data differently depending on whether the information is kept within the vehicle or on peripheral devices. The model shows the US connected vehicle data market is worth between US$11.6bn and US$92.6bn.

Research limitations/implications

This model estimates the value of vehicle data, but a lack of academic references for individual inputs makes finding reliable inputs difficult. The model performance is limited by the accuracy of the authors’ assumptions.

Practical implications

The proposed model demonstrates that connected vehicle data has higher value than people and companies are aware of, and therefore we must secure these data and establish comprehensive rules pertaining to data ownership and stewardship.

Social implications

Estimating the value of data of vehicle data will help companies understand the importance of responsible data stewardship, as well as drive individuals to become more responsible digital citizens.

Originality/value

This is the first paper to propose a model for computing the monetary value of connected vehicle data, as well as the first paper to provide an estimate of this value.

Testing has become one of the dominant costs in the process of bringing a product from initial conception to the market place. Because of this, it is now imperative that the impact of any technology change on the test process is considered at an early stage. In this light, the increasing trend towards the use of surface‐mounting techniques in the fabrication of electronic systems is examined, with particular emphasis on the consequences on product testing during design validation, manufacture and repair. The aim is to highlight areas in which new attitudes and replacements for traditional solutions will be needed if surface‐mounting techniques are to be as cost‐effective as possible.

Abstract

This paper introduces some of the considerations behind the teaching of research methodology at the Royal School of Library and Information Science at the masters level. The module in research methodology is illustrated in relation to information retrieval experiments. Theoretical and practical problems with experimental settings are analysed in relation to the different approaches of information retrieval research. Sampling problems are extremely relevant both for teaching research methodology and for planning investigations in information retrieval. The concept of a model is introduced and also the elements of the topics of the statistical part of the module in relation to typical research questions in information retrieval.
