Abstract

An analysis is given of the present situation regarding PCB production in six independent states of the former USSR. The distinctive characteristics of the PCB industry under the command‐administrative system which existed until 1991 are outlined. Production capacities of PCB manufacturers and production volumes for 1989–1993 are analysed. An important feature of the market is PCB complexity. The fact that the majority of companies are equipped with domestically produced machinery creates drawbacks. The paper concludes with some proposals for action to increase the efficiency and competitiveness of printed circuit board production in the western part of the former USSR.

Abstract

Following the endorsement of the new plans for this year's show at the last AGM, the initial stages of the promotional campaign for CEMEX 94 have been launched. The information packs and booking forms recently circulated to CEMA members have already elicited a good response with some 25 companies making stand reservations. As before, the show will be a mix of open sites and shell scheme. Over the next few weeks members will receive additional information covering show services, special packages and promotional opportunities. The support for the move back to the Pavilion Hall has been welcomed as an ideal opening to give CEMEX a separate ‘home’ at the NEC. In a statement released with the new publicity material for the show, Chairman Fred Thorns expressed his confidence and predicted that “..we will see a stronger economy, a full turnout of CEMA exhibitors showing a broad range of equipment and materials, and greatly increased activity throughout our industry”. Members who may not have seen the CEMEX information or would like to know more should contact: SCS Exhibitions Ltd, 212 London Road, North End, Portsmouth, Hampshire PO29JE. Telephone: (0705) 665133. Fax: (0705) 670036.

Abstract

Stepping off the British Airways flight from Heathrow into the midday sun of Bologna, Italy, it is amazing the difference in temperature two short hours can make. A brief bus trip, train journey and taxi cab later and we arrive at the hotel housing the delegates for the two‐day meeting. The conference/exhibition centre is less than two kilometres away. A pleasant walk in dry weather, but the following two days preceded some of the wettest weather in Europe, with four inches of rainfall in one day. Our location is Modena in northern Italy, heartland of some of the richest cuisine in the country.
