Quad Europe Ltd has announced the appointment of two Regional Sales Managers in the UK, Ashley Dakin and Ross Fraser who become responsible for sales of ‘Quadline’ in the South and North of the UK respectively. Ashley joins Quad Europe from Automation Ltd while Ross comes from TDK.

Here too, in 1856, Wilhelm Carl Heraeus, a chemist and pharmacist, proprietor of the pharmacy which had carried the family name for many generations, succeeded in producing temperatures approaching 2000°C from an oxy‐hydrogen flame, temperatures sufficiently high to achieve the melting point of platinum and to allow him to melt substantial quantities of this metal for the first time. Hanau was then a centre for the jewellery manufacturing industry (and remains so today) so the smelting of platinum and other precious metals had an immediate commercial relevance.

Making Fine Powders ‐ Extremely fine and uniform particles, of 5–50 nanometers, have been produced by a process being developed at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories. Researchers have used the technique to synthesize new, highly dispersed catalysts with a high surface area. It offers a way to make other products which have improved properties: ceramic ball bearings and gears which are stronger and more durable than those available today, and pigments for paints and inks.

A through‐plating facility designed by Heraeus eliminates the need for electroless copper. The new compact facility, which can handle printed circuit boards measuring up to 250 x 450 mm, is easy to operate and causes no damage to the environment. In spite of dispensing with electroless copper, complexing agents and formaldehyde, a high degree of quality in the through‐plating of drilled holes is achieved.
