Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to introduce a new fault protection scheme for microgrid DC networks with ring buses.

Design/methodology/approach

It is well recognized that the protection scheme in a DC ring bus microgrid becomes very complicated due to the bidirectional power flow. To provide reliable protection, the differential current signal is decomposed into several basic modes using adaptive variational mode decomposition (VMD). In this method, the mode number and the penalty factor are chosen optimally by using arithmetic optimization algorithm, yielding satisfactory decomposition results than the conventional VMD. Weighted Kurtosis index is used as the measurement index to select the sensitive mode, which is used to evaluate the discrete Teager energy (DTE) that indicates the occurrence of DC faults. For localizing cable faults, the current signals from the two ends are used on a sample-to-sample basis to formulate the state space matrix, which is solved by using generalized least squares approach. The proposed protection method is validated in MATLAB/SIMULINK by considering various test cases.

Findings

DTE is used to detect pole-pole and pole-ground fault and other disturbances such as high-impedance faults and series arc faults with a reduced detection time (10 ms) compared to some existing techniques.

Originality/value

Verification of this method is performed considering various test cases in MATLAB/SIMULINK platform yielding fast detection timings and accurate fault location.

Abstract

Purpose

Many studies have shown that from a theoretical and empirical point of view, downside risk-based measures of risk are better than the traditional ones. Despite academic appeal and practical implications, downside risk has not been thoroughly examined in markets outside developed country markets. Using downside beta as a measure of downside risk, this study examines the relationship between downside beta and stock returns in Indian equity market, an emerging market with unique investor, asset and market characteristics.

Design/methodology/approach

This is an empirical study done by using ranked portfolio return analysis and regression analysis methodologies.

Findings

The study results show that downside risk, as measured by downside beta, is distinctly priced in the Indian equity market. There is a direct positive relationship between downside beta and contemporaneous realized returns, indicating a premium for downside risk. Downside risk carries a higher weightage than upside potential in the aggregate return of the stock portfolios. Downside beta is a better measure of systematic risk than conventional market beta and downside coskewness.

Practical implications

The empirical results support the adoption of downside beta in practice and provide a case for replacing traditional beta with downside beta in asset pricing applications, trading and investment strategies, and capital allocation decision-making.

Originality/value

This is one of the first in-depth studies examining downside beta in Indian equity markets using a broad sample of individual stock returns covering a wide time range of 22 years. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first one to compare downside beta and downside coskewness using individual stock data from the Indian equity market.

Abstract

Purpose

The fiscal outlay efficiency matters when the performance-based allocation of funds is made to state governments by the central government in a federal structure of an economy like India. Also the efficiency cannon of public expenditure is a key aspect in the field of public economics. Thus, a study to evaluate the efficiency in fiscal outlay of Indian states has been conducted.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper offers a three divisions–based paradigm under Network Data Envelopment Analysis framework to compare the performance of fiscal entities (say Indian state governments) in converting available fiscal resources into desired short-run and long-run growth and development objectives. The network efficiency score has been taken as a measure of the quality of fiscal outlay management that is trifurcated into divisional efficiencies representing budgeting process, fiscal outlay efficiency process and fiscal outlay effectiveness process.

Findings

It has been noticed that the states are under performing in achieving short-run growth targets and so the efficiency process division has been identified a major source of fiscal under performance. Suboptimum allocation of fiscal expenditure under various heads within the fiscal resources, as explained under budgeting process, is another major cause of fiscal under performance.

Practical implications

The study purposes a three divisions–based paradigm that takes into account efficiency of a state in (1) planning budget, (2) achieving short-run growth targets and (3) achieving long-run development targets. These three stages are named as budgeting process efficiency, fiscal outlay efficiency and fiscal outlay effectiveness, respectively. Therefore, a new paradigm called BEE paradigm is proposed to evaluate performance of fiscal entities in terms of fiscal outlay efficiency.

Originality/value

In existing literature on measuring efficiency of public expenditure, the public sector outputs have been made as function of fiscal expenditure as input treating the said outlay as an exogenous variable. In present context, the fiscal expenditure has been treated endogenous to the budgeting process. A high inefficiency on account of budgeting process supports this treatment too.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to establish a hierarchy of critical success factors to develop a framework for evaluating the performance of smart grids from a sustainability perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

The fuzzy analytical hierarchy process is used in this study to assess and determine the relative weight of economic, operational and environmental criteria. At the same time, the evidential reasoning algorithm is used to determine the belief degree of expert’s opinion, and the expected utility theory for the crisp value of success factors in performance estimation.

Findings

The finding reveals that success factors associated with the economic criteria receive significantly more attention from the expert group. Sensitivity analysis indicates the ranking of consumer satisfaction remains stable no matter how criteria weights are changed, which verifies the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed model and evaluation results.

Originality/value

The study presents a solid mathematical framework for collaborative system modeling and systematic analysis. Managers and stakeholders may use the proposed technique as a flexible tool to improve the energy system’s resiliency in a systematic way.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to parametrically investigate the vibration and damping characteristics of a functionally graded (FG) inhomogeneous and porous curved sandwich beam with a frequency-dependent viscoelastic core.

Design/methodology/approach

The FG material properties in this study are assumed to vary through the beam thickness by power law distribution. Additionally, FG layers have porosities, which are analyzed individually in terms of even and uneven distributions. First, the equations of motion for the free vibration of the FG curved sandwich beam were derived by Hamilton's principle. Then, the generalized differential quadrature method (GDQM) was used to solve the resulting equations in the frequency domain. Validation of the proposed FG curved beam model and the reliability of the GDQ solution was provided via comparison with the results that already exist in the literature.

Findings

A series of studies are carried out to understand the effects on the natural frequencies and modal loss factors of system parameters, i.e. beam thickness, porosity distribution, power law exponent and curvature on the vibration characteristics of an FG curved sandwich beam with a ten-parameter fractional derivative viscoelastic core material model.

Originality/value

This paper focuses on the vibration and damping characteristics of FG inhomogeneous and porous curved sandwich beam with frequency dependent viscoelastic core by GDQM – for the first time, to the best of the authors' knowledge. Moreover, it serves as a reference for future studies, especially as it shows that the effect of porosity distribution on the modal loss factor needs further investigation. GDQM can be useful in dynamic analysis of sandwich structures used in aerospace, automobile, marine and civil engineering applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This article offered two meshfree algorithms, namely the local radial basis functions-finite difference (LRBF-FD) approximation and local radial basis functions-differential quadrature method (LRBF-DQM) to simulate the multidimensional hyperbolic wave models and work is an extension of Jiwari (2015).

Design/methodology/approach

In the evolvement of the first algorithm, the time derivative is discretized by the forward FD scheme and the Crank-Nicolson scheme is used for the rest of the terms. After that, the LRBF-FD approximation is used for spatial discretization and quasi-linearization process for linearization of the problem. Finally, the obtained linear system is solved by the LU decomposition method. In the development of the second algorithm, semi-discretization in space is done via LRBF-DQM and then an explicit RK4 is used for fully discretization in time.

Findings

For simulation purposes, some 1D and 2D wave models are pondered to instigate the chastity and competence of the developed algorithms.

Originality/value

The developed algorithms are novel for the multidimensional hyperbolic wave models. Also, the stability analysis of the second algorithm is a new work for these types of model.

Abstract

Purpose

This article focuses on the low-velocity impact (LVI) output of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)’ reinforcement circular plates, considering agglomeration size effect and clumping of CNTs’ inner side of the agglomerations.

Design/methodology/approach

A representative volume element (RVE) is used to determine the nanocomposite properties reinforced with agglomerated CNTs with random orientation. First-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is used to obtain the motion equations of LVI analysis. These equations are handled by developing a Ritz method and Lagrangian mechanics. To extract the mass and stiffness matrices, terms with second and higher degrees are ignored.

Findings

Formulation validation is performed by providing various examples, including comparisons with other research and ABAQUS FE code. The effects of agglomeration size, clumping of CNTs’ inner side of the agglomerations, CNT volume fraction and impact location on the responses of impact load, projectile displacement and plate deflection are analytically studied. These achievements illuminate how the influence of agglomeration size is very small on the impact response. Also, the influence of clumping of CNTs’ inner side of the agglomerations is significant, and as it increases, the displacement values and impact time increase, and the impact force decreases.

Originality/value

In this article, to avoid additional calculations, the parameters of the mass matrix and the stiffness coefficients are linearized to obtain the equations of motion of the impact on the circular plate.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to identify the variables responsible for classifying the investors into risk takers (RT) and risk avoiders (RA) across their economic perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

The research offers a novel and unobtrusive measure of classifying investors into RT and RA based on a set of financial risk tolerance (FRT) questions. The authors have investigated the causes of discrimination across economic perspectives over a sample of 552 investors exposed to market risk.

Findings

The authors identify that out of the total of 11 risk assessment variables, only three are responsible for classifying investors into RA and RT. The variables are risk return trade-off, comfort level dealing with risk, and understanding short-term volatility. Financial literacy is considered as an emerging cause of discrimination. Further, the authors highlight the most striking finding to be the discriminating factors across wealth and source of income of the investors.

Originality/value

Existing research on FRT can be loosely segregated into three groups: the relationship between an individual's financial and non-FRT, estimation of FRT score (FRTS), and perceived self-assessed FRTS. The current research roughly falls into the third category of study where the authors have not only studied the self-assessed risk tolerance but also evaluated the predictors. Most of the studies have focussed on estimating self-assessed FRT with the help of one direct question to the respondent. However, the uniqueness of this study is that the researchers have used an instrument comprising a series of direct and indirect questions that can easily estimate the self-assessed risk perception and also discriminate the role of the economic factors that have any impact on self-assessed FRTS.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the current study is to examine the implications of the implementation of Goods and Service Tax (GST) on the revenue efficiency of the sub-national governments in India. Furthermore, the study aims to compare the revenue efficiency of the Indian states for the pre-GST and post-GST periods in India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study has used the annual revenue of value-added tax (VAT)/GST of the Indian states for the period ranging from 2012–2013 to 2020–2021 for the pre- and post-GST periods. The empirical results are based on the panel regression model for examining the implications of GST adoption on the Indian states.

Findings

The analysis shows that the implementation of GST in India has negatively impacted the revenue efficiency of the Indian states. Moreover, the results affirm that the contribution of the service sector to the state's Net State Domestic Product (NSDP), credit-deposit ratio (CDR) and outstanding net bank credit (ONBC) ratio of schedule commercial banks (SCBs) positively and states' dependency on central transfers (DCT) negatively impact the tax revenue efforts of the state governments. Furthermore, the GST adoption has a greater impact on the revenue efficiency of the minor states in comparison to major states which may widen the inter-state disparity gap as GST revenue constitutes a major share in the Own Tax Revenue (OTR) of the Indian states in aggregate.

Practical implications

The current study will act as a guide for government, policymakers and for the sitting of the fifteenth finance commission in India for future policy formulation on GST and compensation to the Indian states. Similarly, this study can be used as a base for conducting future studies on the implications of GST at the national, sub-national, and international levels.

Originality/value

Previous studies on the implications of GST are theoretical and conceptual. There is hardly any study at the national or sub-national level that has focused on the implications of GST on the revenue efficiency of the Indian states.
