Abstract

Executives of network organizations seek to combine core competencies and talents of individual firms, along the various links of the value chain for a given project. These firms are brought together in alignment for the purpose of providing organizations a competitive advantage. Using multiple examples as well as results from an extensive research project, this chapter introduces a multidisciplinary model for leading network organizations. The model is informed by theoretical and empirical research and by executive practice. It includes consideration of an organization’s internal interactions as well as its interactions with the environment and with the external organizations within its network. The chapter provides leaders a set of four imperatives for achieving effective collaboration within networks.

Abstract

Purpose

Using the stimulus–organism–response (S–O–R) framework, this study investigates the role of trust (organism) in influencing the behavioural intentions (response) of emerging market retail banking customers, based on the banks' selected customer-focused efforts (stimuli) to influence behavioural intentions. The study also looks at the moderating effects of customers' perceived value and the duration of their support on these relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

The data analysed were collected from 599 retail banking customers in an emerging market via a self-administered questionnaire.

Findings

Customer-focused efforts, except for expertise, significantly and positively influence trust. Trust partially mediates the relationships between the remaining customer-focused efforts and behavioural intentions. Furthermore, perceived value moderates the relationships between these stimuli and trust, excluding information sharing. The duration of customer support for the bank also moderates the relationships between these stimuli and trust, bar customer orientation.

Research limitations/implications

The study augments the understanding of trust's role as the organism from an S–O–R framework perspective.

Practical implications

The study assists banks in emerging markets in understanding trust's role in influencing customers' behavioural intentions, given the application of selected customer-focused efforts. It highlights the significance of perceived value and duration of customer support in the relationships between these customer-focused efforts and trust.

Originality/value

Using a single S–O–R framework, the role of trust in mediating the relationships between retail banks' selected customer-focused efforts and customers' behavioural intentions is uncovered.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze two case studies with a trust matrix tool, to identify trust issues related to electronic health records.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research approach is applied using two case studies. The data analysis of these studies generated a problem list, which was mapped to a trust matrix.

Findings

Results demonstrate flaws in current practices and point to achieving balance between organizational, person and technology trust perspectives. The analysis revealed three challenge areas, to: achieve higher trust in patient-focussed healthcare; improve communication between patients and healthcare professionals; and establish clear terminology. By taking trust into account, a more holistic perspective on healthcare can be achieved, where trust can be obtained and optimized.

Research limitations/implications

A trust matrix is tested and shown to identify trust problems on different levels and relating to trusting beliefs. Future research should elaborate and more fully address issues within three identified challenge areas.

Practical implications

The trust matrix’s usefulness as a tool for organizations to analyze trust problems and issues is demonstrated.

Originality/value

Healthcare trust issues are captured to a greater extent and from previously unchartered perspectives.

Abstract

Purpose

Mentoring has been identified as a key strategy to career development and has been argued to be indispensable for women to advance to positions of power. For mentoring to succeed, it is imperative that mentors trust their protégés. However, recent research has suggested that male mentors trust their male protégés more so than their female protégés. Since women are frequently mentored by men, it is imperative that they gain the same level of trust as their male peers enjoy. According to an established model of trust, trust is shaped by the mentor's perceptions of protégé ability, benevolence and integrity, as well as perceptions of the risk inherent to mentoring. This exploratory research aims to examine what influences these perceptions to shed light on how protégés can gain the trust of their mentors.

Design/methodology/approach

Because little research has been conducted in this area, an exploratory qualitative design was chosen. Mayer, Davis and Schoorman's model of organizational trust is used as the theoretical framework.

Findings

This research sheds light on what predicts how trust is formed, fostered and lost in a mentoring context by examining factors that may influence perceptions of ability, benevolence, integrity and risk. Several protégé behaviors were identified that influenced perceptions of ability. Perceptions of benevolence were described as “feelings”. Perceptions of integrity were influenced by keeping confidences. Finally contextual factors, such as gender, were also identified as influencing the level of trust.

Research limitations/implications

The sample size was based on only 24 mentors; as a consequence, the findings are exploratory in nature and not generalizable.

Practical implications

Trust has been identified as a critical component of an effective mentoring relationship. As a consequence, mentoring programs must include activities that assist in establishing and fostering trust between mentor and protégé.

Social implications

Women are still under‐represented in positions of power. Mentoring has been widely adopted as a mechanism to help women climb the corporate ladder. The lack of female mentors frequently means that female protégés have to be mentored by men. If women are to break the “glass ceiling,” it is imperative that male mentors trust their female protégés to the same extent as their male protégés and provide them with the same career advancing opportunities.

Originality/value

Very little research has examined the role of trust in mentoring, although trust has been identified as a critical element in other organizational activities, such as leadership, performance appraisal, labor‐management relations, interpersonal cooperation, e‐commerce transactions and self‐managing work teams.

Abstract

This article explores trust in the managerial context of integrity, performance and benevolence in contemporary Asian societies. Empirical evidence is drawn from three small Asian societies where reform and transitions characterise the current socio‐economic scene. As these countries attempt their recovery process from the severe economic downturn of mid 1997, managers of work organisations are calling on unique Asian ways of responding to global imperatives. Trust may be considered as a unique feature in these countries and it may be considered to be a central element defining the managerial frameworks. Indeed, the study findings allow us to suggest that trust is perceived strongly by the managers in these countries to be not only as the key critical assumptions but also it defined internal and external relationships.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship of employees’ element of organizational trust with the processes and practices of the merged organization during post-M & A integration post-merger integration (PMI) phase. Specifically the variables of employees’ perceptions of effectiveness of HR initiatives, communication, and cultural convergence were studied as important determinants of employees’ trust.

Design/methodology/approach

A mixed method research design was adopted, where quantitative data were collected through questionnaires, and the qualitative support has been gained asking open ended elaborated questions. The analysis was performed on the data obtained from 117 respondents having experienced merger or acquisition in past two to three years. Univariate and bivariate analysis were performed on the data using SPSS.

Findings

The results of the study indicated the significant positive relationship amongst the variables understudy. It has been found that the poor management of the underlined processes and practices during PMI phase would negatively impact the employees’ phenomenon of trust in the merged organization.

Practical implications

This research has significant implications for researchers and practitioners. This study contributes to the understanding of the psychological outcomes of M & A survivors as an imperative for strategic human resource management.

Originality/value

This research is an extension of M & A performance research in terms of psychological variables, and is an initiative to discuss M & A cases from the context of a fast developing economy.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to take a micro-foundational perspective to identify the effective leadership style and employee work behavior in achieving the goals of sustainability. It also aims to identify the mechanism through which leaders influence employees’ performance.

Design/methodology/approach

The study draws on existing literature for model creation and proposition development to understand the leadership style and employee behavior that would be effective in achieving sustainability goals.

Findings

In achieving the multifaceted goals of sustainability, servant leadership style is effective in mobilizing the resources and implementing the sustainability strategies among stakeholders. By enhancing interpersonal trust and psychological empowerment, servant leaders positively influence the work role behavior of the employees. Furthermore, the work performance of employees helps in achieving sustainable development.

Research limitations/implications

This study draws on the theory of micro-foundations to establish how individual-level factors help in realizing the macro goal of sustainability. It throws light on the growing need to cultivate micro-level leadership skills and employee behaviors to have effective organizational sustainability performance. It is imperative for the organizations to be socially responsible along with achieving the business goals.

Originality/value

This study responds to the call of studying micro-level actions in the context of sustainable development. It extends the current knowledge by developing a causal model linking leadership and employee performance through interpersonal trust and psychological empowerment. Moreover, it presents testable propositions linking interpersonal trust and psychological empowerment.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to empirically investigate the relationship of perceived transparency, perceived accountability and perceived responsiveness with overall public trust in local government. Moreover, it addressed the “why” and “how” questions about the existence of this relationship by examining the underlying mechanism of the government response to COVID-19.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative research design is applied in the current study. Data was collected from two cities situated in Indonesia via a cross-sectional survey at local administration levels. The final data set of 330 respondents was then analyzed using Smart partial least square (PLS)3 by testing through the measurement and structural model.

Findings

Results revealed positive associations among the study variables. Also, the mediatory role of the government response to COVID-19 was supported by the results.

Originality/value

This study aims to bring awareness and contribution in the body of knowledge about the importance of elements of good governance in building and sustaining public trust in local governments based on the fact that in countries such as Indonesia, there is a dearth of literature in this context. Further, it provides strategic and practical suggestions to the state regarding the advantages of using good governance practices in their communication with citizens in certain and uncertain situations, especially nowadays during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study aims to probe into the determinants of mobile wallet adoption by millennials with the assistance of extended technology acceptance model.

Design/methodology/approach

The data was collected from the students studying professional courses in leading private universities in the north region of India. Keeping in view of the objective and hypotheses, the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modeling (PLS -SEM) technique was used to test the proposed model.

Findings

The tested model brings into notice the imperative observation, which clearly outlines that there are all significant relationships, which can be observed herein. To explicitly state: perceived ease of use (PEOU) has a significant positive relationship with the perceived usefulness followed by PEOU also shares a significant positive relationship with the behavioral intention, and lastly trust as a variable under study establishes a significant positive relationship with actual use (AU).

Research limitations/implications

Implications for the banking industry are to ensure the safety and privacy (financial information) confidential.

Originality/value

The present study contributes to the literature of mobile wallet in the developing nations.
