Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to study the effect of micro-groove texture geometric parameters on the lubrication characteristics of the tripod universal coupling.

Design/methodology/approach

The Navier–Stokes equation was used to analyse the influence of micro-groove geometric parameters on the coupling’s lubrication performance. Further, Kriging approximate model and neighborhood cultivation genetic algorithm (NCGA) were used to optimise the micro-groove geometric parameters and improve the coupling’s lubrication performance.

Findings

The results show that as the micro-groove depth and width increase, respectively, the oil film-bearing capacity first increases and then decreases; on the contrary, the friction coefficient first decreases and then increases. With the increase of the micro-groove inclination angle, the bearing capacity of the oil film first increases and then remains unchanged. At the same time, the friction coefficient first decreases and then increases slightly. The lubricating performance of the optimised coupling is significantly improved: the optimised oil film-bearing capacity increases by 12.5%, the friction coefficient reduces by 14% and the maximum oil film pressure increases by 4.3%.

Originality/value

At present, the grease lubrication performance of the micro-groove textured tripod universal coupling has not been studied. The micro-groove parameters are optimised, and the coupling’s lubrication performance is improved greatly by the Kriging model and NCGA algorithm. It is of great significance to extend the coupling’s fatigue life.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the grease isothermal lubrication properties of the tripod sliding universal coupling (TSUC) in automotive transmission shaft and study its impact on a variety of factors to improve its grease lubrication properties.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the simplified geometrical model, the research of grease lubrication properties of the TSUC was analyzed, and compared with oil lubrication in same parameters. Then the effects of effective radius, frequency (vehicle speed) and amplitude (angle between intermediate shaft and input shaft) on grease isothermal lubrication properties are theoretically investigated by using multigrid methods.

Findings

The results indicate that the grease isothermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) film thickness shape and pressure distribution shape of the TSUC are similar to the oil lubrication, but the film thickness of grease lubrication is less than that of oil lubrication. Higher effective radius results in a wider pressure distribution, a lower center pressure and a thicker lubricating film. Higher frequency (vehicle speed) results in a remarkable second pressure peak and a thicker lubricating film. The effects of amplitude (angle between intermediate shaft and input shaft) and frequency have similar tendencies.

Originality/value

The numerical analysis research on grease lubrication properties of the TSUC is significant because the automotive transmission shaft is widely used. And it provides a new direction in designing TSUCs.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to improve the grease thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) properties of the tripod sliding universal coupling (TSUC) under automotive practical conditions. For this purpose, the effect of effective radius was theoretically investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the simplified geometric model, the effect of effective radius on the pressure distribution, film thickness and temperature distribution of the TSUC was theoretically investigated using the multigrid and stepping methods. The TEHL properties were compared with the results obtained using the isothermal calculation method.

Findings

The results show that the thermal effect has a great impact on the film thickness and the pressure distribution of grease lubrication properties. Moreover, larger effective radius results in a wider but lower pressure distribution, a wider and thicker lubricating film and a lower temperature distribution.

Originality/value

The TSUC can be widely used in the front drive automotive transmission because it can transmit larger torque than before. The effect of effective radius on the thermal grease lubrication properties under automotive practical conditions provides a new direction for designing it.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the influence of three-column groove shell radius, ball radius, lubricating oil viscosity and elastic modulus on the thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication (TEHL) characteristics and optimisation of the ball-type tripod universal joint.

Design/methodology/approach

The point contact TEHL model of the joint was developed, and the multi-grid method was used to solve it. The influence of three-column groove shell radius, ball radius, lubricating oil viscosity and elastic modulus on the lubrication characteristics was analysed. Further, the optimisation of the joint TEHL performance was carried out by the Kriging approximation model combined with the multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO) algorithm.

Findings

The research results show that increasing groove shell radius and ball radius can effectively increase the oil film thickness, and decrease the oil film pressure, as well as the temperature rise. Decreasing elastic modulus can reduce the oil film temperature rise and pressure, and increasing viscosity can effectively increase the oil film thickness. The optimised minimum oil film thickness increases by 33.23% and the optimised maximum oil film pressure and maximum temperature rise decrease by 11.92% and 28.87%, respectively. Furthermore, the relative error of each response output is less than 10%.

Originality/value

This study applies TEHL theory to the tribological research of the ball-type tripod universal joint, and the joint’s lubrication performance is improved greatly by the Kriging model and MOPSO algorithm, which provides an effective measure to raise the joint’s working efficiency.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of variable loading conditions (392 N-785N-392N-785N) with break-in period were used to study interactions between zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) 0.1 P% (phosphorus) and fine-grade molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) 3%, in different mixtures of NLGI 2 lithium stearate grease. Four-ball wear tests were used to evaluate the tribological properties of different grease mixtures such as coefficient of friction and wear. ASTM 2266 as reported by earlier studies is useful, but it is not representative of real-life applications where variable loads and speeds and different break-in periods play a role and could change the results and the nature of tribofilms.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, chemical and mechanical properties of tribofilms were examined. Moreover, design of experiment was used to examine the data and shorten experimentation time. Research described here is investigating variable loading conditions for real-life applications by using a break-in period of 2 min at the start to minimize asperities and establish a clean surface. Design expert (DOE) analyzes responses to reveal those variables that are single factor and those that are multifactor whether synergistically or antagonistically.

Findings

The results indicated that spectrum loading with break-in period showed reduction in wear when tested in greases with ZDDP/MoS2 combinations. Ramping up or down the load every 7.5 min for a rotational speed of 1,200 rpm and a total of 36,000 revolutions or 30-min time slowed the wear properties of lithium-based grease under different MoS2 and ZDDP concentrations. Experiments indicated that wear was largely dependent on the loading condition and ZDDP additives during specific break-in period at 1,200 rotational speed. It is believed that MoS2 greases perform better under spectrum loading and under constant loading when mixed with ZDDP phosphorus.

Originality/value

This research indicates that there is a synergistic interaction between ZDDP, MoS2 and variable loading especially when a break-in period is applied. The results indicated that wear was largely dependent on the specific speed used with spectrum loading as presented in the energy dispersive spectroscopy and the Auger electron spectroscopy analysis, and thus a 3% MoS2 grease with ZDDP (phosphorus: 0.1 Wt.%) are needed to improve the wear resistance and improve the friction characteristics.

Abstract

This paper discusses algorithms for large displacement analysis of interconnected flexible and rigid multibody systems. Hydrostatic and hydrodynamic loads for systems being submerged in water are also considered. The systems may consist of cables and beams and may combine very flexible parts with rigid parts. Various ways of introducing structural joints are discussed. A special implementation of the Hilber‐Hughes‐Taylor time integration scheme for constrained non‐linear systems is outlined. The formulation is general and allows for displacements and rotational motion of unlimited size. Aspects concerning efficient solution of constrained dynamic problems are discussed. These capabilities have been implemented in a general purpose non‐linear finite element program. Applications involving static and dynamic analysis of a bi‐articulated tower and a floating tripod platform kept in place by three anchor lines are discussed.
