Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the three-dimensional natural convection and entropy generation in the rectangular cuboid cavities included by chamfered triangular partition made by polypropylene.
Design/methodology/approach
The enclosure is filled by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-H2O nanofluid and air as two immiscible fluids. The finite volume approach is used for computation. The fluid flow and heat transfer are considered with combination of local entropy generation due to fluid friction and heat transfer. Moreover, a numerical method is developed based on three-dimensional solution of Navier–Stokes equations.
Findings
Effects of side ratio of triangular partitions (SR = 0.5, 1 and 2), Rayleigh number (103 < Ra < 105) and solid volume fraction (f = 0.002, 0.004 and 0.01 Vol.%) of nanofluid are investigated on both natural convection characteristic and volumetric entropy generation. The results show that the partitions can be a suitable method to control fluid flow and energy consumption, and three-dimensional solutions renders more accurate results.
Originality/value
The originality of this work is to study the three-dimensional natural convection and entropy generation of a stratified system.

Abstract
Purpose
The main aim of this work is to perform a numerical analysis on natural convection with entropy generation in a partially open triangular cavity with a local heat source.
Design/methodology/approach
The unsteady governing dimensionless partial differential equations with corresponding initially and boundary conditions were numerically solved by the finite difference method of the second-order accuracy. The effects of dimensionless time is studied, and other governing parameters are Rayleigh number (Ra = 103 − 105), Prandtl number (Pr = 6.82), heater length (w/L = 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6) and distance of heater ratio (δ/L = 0.3).
Findings
An increase in the Rayleigh number leads to an increment of the fluid flow and heat transfer rates. Average Bejan number decreases with Ra as opposed to the average Nusselt number and average entropy generation. High values of Ra characterize a formation of long-duration oscillating behavior for the average Nusselt number and entropy generation.
Originality/value
The originality of this work is to analyze the entropy generation in natural convection in a one side open and partial heater-located cavity. This is a good application for electronical systems or building design.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate free convection of copper-water nanofluid in an upper half of circular horizontal cylinder with a local triangular heater under the effects of uniform magnetic field and cold cylinder shell using control volume finite element method (CVFEM).
Design/methodology/approach
Governing equations formulated in dimensionless stream function, vorticity and temperature variables using the single-phase nanofluid model with Brinkman correlation for the effective dynamic viscosity and Hamilton and Crosser model for the effective thermal conductivity have been solved numerically by CVFEM.
Findings
The impacts of control parameters such as the Rayleigh number, Hartmann number, nanoparticles volume fraction, local triangular heater size, shape factor on streamlines and isotherms as well as local and average Nusselt numbers have been examined. The outcomes indicate that the average Nusselt number is an increasing function of the Rayleigh number, shape factor and nanoparticles volume fraction, while it is a decreasing function of the Hartmann number.
Originality/value
A complete study of the free convection of copper-water nanofluid in an upper half of circular horizontal cylinder with a local triangular heater under the effects of uniform magnetic field and cold cylinder shell using CVFEM is addressed.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to study the effects of finite wall thickness on the natural convection and entropy generation in a square cavity filled with Al2O3–water nanofluid in the presence of bottom heat source.
Design/methodology/approach
The moving isothermal heater was placed on the bottom solid wall. The vertical walls (left and right walls) were fully maintained at low temperatures. The rest of the bottom solid wall along with the top horizontal wall was kept adiabatic. The boundaries of the domain are assumed to be impermeable; the fluid within the cavity is a water-based nanofluid having Al2O3 nanoparticles. The Boussinesq approximation is applicable. The dimensionless governing equations subject to the selected boundary conditions are solved using the finite difference method. The current proposed numerical method is proven excellent through comparisons with the existing experimental and numerical published studies.
Findings
Numerical results were demonstrated graphically in several forms including streamlines, isotherms and local entropy generation, as well as the local and average Nusselt numbers. The results reveal that the thermal conductivity and thickness of the solid wall are important control parameters for optimization of heat transfer and Bejan number within the partially heated square cavity.
Originality/value
According to the past research studies mentioned above and to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the gap regarding the problem with entropy generation analysis and natural convection in partially heated square cavity has yet to be filled. Because of this, this study aims to investigate the entropy generation analysis as well as the natural convection in nanofluid-filled square cavity which was heated partially. A square cavity with an isothermal heater located on the bottom solid horizontal wall of the cavity and partly cold sidewalls are essential problems in thermal processing applications. Hence, the authors believe that this present work will be a valuable contribution in improving the thermal performance.

Purpose
This paper aims to perform the lattice Boltzmann simulation of natural convection heat transfer in cavities included with active hot and cold walls at the side walls and internal hot and cold obstacles.
Design/methodology/approach
The cavity is filled with double wall carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs)-water nanofluid. Different approaches such as local and total entropy generation, local and average Nusselt number and heatline visualization are used to analyze the natural convection heat transfer. The cavity is filled with DWCNTs-water nanofluid and the thermal conductivity and dynamic viscosity are measured experimentally at different solid volume fractions of 0.01 per cent, 0.02 per cent, 0.05 per cent, 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.5 per cent and at a temperature range of 300 to 340 (K).
Findings
Two sets of correlations for these parameters based on temperature and solid volume fraction are developed and used in the numerical simulations. The influences of different governing parameters such as Rayleigh number, solid volume fraction and different arrangements of active walls on the fluid flow, heat transfer and entropy generation are presented, comprehensively. It is found that the different arrangements of active walls have pronounced influence on the flow structure and heat transfer performance. Furthermore, the Nusselt number has direct relationship with Rayleigh number and solid volume fraction. On the other hand, the total entropy generation has direct and reverse relationship with Rayleigh number and solid volume fraction, respectively.
Originality/value
The originality of this work is to analyze the two-dimensional natural convection using lattice Boltzmann method and different approaches such as entropy generation and heatline visualization.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of enclosure shape on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) nanofluidic flow, heat transfer and irreversibility in square, trapezoidal and triangular thermal systems under fluid volume constraints, with the aim of optimizing thermal behavior in diverse applications.
Design/methodology/approach
The study uses numerical simulations based on a finite element-based technique to analyze the effects of the Rayleigh number (Ra), Hartmann number (Ha), magnetic field orientation (γ) and nanoparticle concentration (ζ) on heat transfer characteristics and thermodynamic entropy production.
Findings
The key findings reveal that the geometrical design significantly influences fluid velocity, heat transfer and irreversibility. Trapezoidal thermal systems outperform square systems, while triangular systems achieve optimal enhancement. Nanoparticle concentration enhances heat transfer and flow strength at higher Rayleigh numbers. The magnetic field intensity has a significant impact on fluid flow and heat transport in natural convection, with higher Hartmann numbers resulting in reduced flow strength and heat transfer. The study also highlights the influence of various parameters on thermodynamic entropy production.
Research limitations/implications
Further research can explore additional geometries, parameters and boundary conditions to expand the understanding of enclosure shape effects on MHD nanofluidic flow and heat transfer. Experimental validation can complement the numerical simulations presented in this study.
Originality/value
This study provides valuable insights into the impact of enclosure shape on heat transfer performance in MHD nanofluid flow systems. The findings contribute to the optimization of thermal behavior in applications such as electronics cooling and energy systems. The comparison of different enclosure shapes and the analysis of thermodynamic entropy production add novelty to the study.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the role of shapes of containers (nine different containers) on entropy generation minimization involving identical cross-sectional area (1 sq. unit) in the presence of identical heating (isothermal). The nine containers are categorized into three classes based on their geometric similarities (Class 1: square, tilted square and parallelogram; Class 2: trapezoidal type 1, trapezoidal type 2 and triangular; Class 3: convex, concave and curved triangular).
Design/methodology/approach
Galerkin finite element method is used to solve the governing equations for a representative fluid (engine oil: Pr = 155) at Ra = 103–105. In addition, finite element method is used to solve the streamfunction equation and evaluate the entropy generation terms (Sψ and Sθ). Average Nusselt number (

Originality/value
This study depicts that entropy generation associated with the convection process can be reduced via altering the shapes of containers to improve the thermal performance or efficiency for processing of identical mass with identical heat input. The comparative study of nine containers elucidates that the values of local maxima of Sψ (Sψ,max), Sθ (Sθ,max) and magnitude of Stotal vary with change in shapes of the containers (Classes 1–3) at fixed Pr and Ra. Such a comparative study based on entropy generation minimization on optimal heating during convection of fluid is yet to appear in the literature. The outcome of this study depicts that containers with curved walls are instrumental to optimize entropy generation with reasonable thermal processing rates.

Abstract
Purpose
This study aims to investigate numerically the problem of conjugate conduction and mixed convection heat transfer of a nanofluid in a rotational/stationary circular enclosure using a two-phase mixture model.
Design/methodology/approach
Hot and cold surfaces on the wall or inside the enclosure (heater and cooler) are maintained at constant temperature of Th and Tc, respectively, whereas other parts are thermally insulated. To examine the effects of various parameters such as Richardson number (0.01 = Ri =100), thermal conductivity ratio of solid to base fluid (1 = Kr = 100), volume fraction of nanoparticle (0 = φ = 0.05), insertion of conductive covers (C.Cs) around the heater in a different shape (triangular, circular or square), segmentation and arrangement of the conductive blocks (C.Bs) and rotation direction of the enclosure on the flow structure and heat transfer rate, two-dimensional equations of mass, momentum and energy conservation, as well as volume fraction, are solved using finite volume method and Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations (SIMPLE) algorithm.
Findings
The results show that inserting C.C around heater can increase or decrease heat transfer rate, and it depends on thermal conductivity ratio of solid to pure fluid. Also, it is found that by the division of C.B and location of its portions in a horizontal configuration, heat transfer rate reduces. Moreover, it is observed that external heating and cooling of the enclosure causes enhancement of heat transfer relative to that of internal heating and cooling. Finally, results illustrate that under the condition that cylinders rotate in the same direction, the heat transfer rate increases as compared to those that rotate in the opposite direction. Hence rotation direction of cylinders can be used as a desired parameter for controlling heat transfer rate.
Originality/value
A comprehensive report of results for the problem of conjugate conduction and mixed convection heat transfer in a circular cylinder containing different shapes of C.C, conducting obstacle and heater and cooler has been presented. An efficient numerical technique has been developed to solve this problem. The achievements of this paper are purely original, and the numerical results were never published by any researcher.
