Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyse a programme designed to welcome and train new employees, implemented in a chemical industry, privileging the transmission of know-how as a dynamic process where learning is co-constructed in the course of the activity.

Design/methodology/approach

The design of the programme was based on the analysis of the work performed in real context by operators and supervisors. The data about the programme’s evaluation were collected by questionnaire, assessing the trainees’ global development and the impact of the training programme (after six months).

Findings

This paper involves designing, planning and implementing “4 × 4 Training”, a training programme for young trainees. Combining in-class training with an extensive component of on-the-job mentoring, the programme involved trainees, mentors and internal trainers, monitored by work psychologists. The results show both the trainees and the mentors evaluate the programme positively. The professional transmission stands out as an activity that is thought through and defined in group, assisted by a mentoring relationship of mutual learning.

Practical implications

When planning and developing intergenerational transmission processes, it is crucial to consider the organisational conditions, to involve from an early stage the key players of each work situation and to guarantee that the mentoring activity and the productive activity overlap coherently.

Originality/value

It is an innovative process to integrate trainees in the chemical industry in Portugal. The methodological approach and the findings provide a first framework that justifies the relevance of the transmission of know-how through a real work situation.

Abstract

The purpose of the chapter is to analyze how firms’ R&D investment decisions are affected by asymmetries in knowledge transmission, taking into account different sources of asymmetry, such as unequal know-how management capabilities and spillovers localization within an international oligopoly. We follow a game theoretic approach and consider a two-country imperfect competition model with two firms – one from each country – producing a homogeneous good. Both the firms’ mode of foreign expansion and R&D level are endogenously determined. We find that a better ability to manage knowledge flows incentivates the firm to invest more in R&D. By introducing geographically bounded spillovers, we also show that one-way foreign direct investment (FDI) stimulates the multinational enterprise (MNE) to raise its own R&D, due to both the elimination of transport cost and a greater ability to source. Furthermore, it emerges that when geographical proximity increases the MNE's capability to source local know-how, FDI is more likely to occur. The originality of this chapter relies on the analysis of the impact of asymmetries within an oligopoly model with endogenous R&D. Differently from other studies, this framework allows us to provide neat analytical results.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research paper is to describe the planning, implementation and impact of “4 x 4 Training”, a programme for trainees in the chemical industry.

Design/methodology/approach

In all, 10 trainees, 36 internal trainers, and 10 mentors were involved in the programme, and data were collected by questionnaire assessing the trainees’ global development and the impact of training after six months.

Findings

On the Box and Off the Road stages were evaluated positively by trainees and mentors as was the challenge. Learning was considered to be bidirectional and trainees continued to improve over time continuing to seek support from their mentors.

Practical implications

To successfully implement programmes enabling transmission of know-how consideration needs to be given to organizational conditions with senior workers involved in the planning and development from an early stage. Transmission should take place through and during a real context work process with support from the mentor and the work team.

Originality/value

This paper has an original approach as it developed an innovative mentoring programme for new trainees in the chemical industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand the presence of royalties in a number of retail contracts, recognising that some distribution networks do not use this monetary provision.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on the theory of contracts. It provides an econometric analysis of recent French data using the main theoretical explanation concerning the presence of royalties in distribution contractual relationships.

Findings

The evidence suggests that the presence of royalties in distribution contracts depends on the management by the producer of the brand value: the transmission of concepts and know‐how to retailers and advertising and promotional campaigns.

Research limitations/implications

As a result of data availability, the paper focuses on the presence or the absence of royalties in distribution contracts. Future research should aim to explain the level of royalty rate, i.e. the share of the retailers' turnover accruing to the producers.

Practical implications

This paper offers an understanding of the presence of royalties in the contractual relationships between producers and retailers, providing practitioners with a better basis for making decisions in designing distribution contracts.

Originality/value

This paper enlarges the empirical evidence concerning the monetary provisions for several kinds of distribution networks based on a brand name and considers different types of producer involvement in the network.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between capabilities and renewal of organizational and business know-how in franchise networks.

Design/methodology/approach

This work uses a comparative case study of adaptive, absorptive and innovative capabilities to investigate knowledge renewal in 16 franchise networks.

Findings

The findings show that adaptive and innovative capabilities complement each other to foster know-how renewal. Furthermore, networks without internal R&D need to mobilize adaptive, absorptive and innovative capabilities to renew both organizational and business know-how. The findings also highlight that the three capabilities are interconnected.

Research limitations/implications

The results of this research could provide insights for franchise networks to regenerate their knowledge base and ensure their long-term survival.

Originality/value

The underlying capabilities that explain organizational and business know-how renewal in franchises have not been investigated.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to describe an ethnographic research study conducted within French families in order to examine the transfer of food learning between parents and children.

Design/methodology/approach

An ethnographic study in the respondents' home was conducted. Semi‐directive interviews with children and parents and observation were carried out in heterogeneous families.

Findings

Results indicate that food meal time is a way of socializing family members in consumption skills related to food. Food learning took place in two ways: from parents to children and from children to parents. Through different socialization factors, children will discover new food products or food practices and will be able to bring them to the home. By sharing these new experiences, children teach (directly or indirectly) parents new consumption skills related to the food domain. The food environment (e.g: familial atmosphere, interactions around the meal), more than the act of eating itself allows for a better understanding of food transmission within the family.

Research limitations/implications

These findings would be of benefit to public policy as well as to investors and food manufacturers by integrating the reverse socialization aspect. Limits and research perspectives are discussed after the presentation of the results.

Originality/value

The paper investigates interactions between parents and children within their natural setting: their home.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to consider how migrants may act as channel of diffusion of knowledge which contributes to the dynamics of trade and comparative advantages of EU and MENA countries for the period 1990–2015.

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting an IV approach and a gravity framework to instrument for migration, the authors document how variations in stocks of migrants coming from (in) countries that are already competitive exporters of a given product impact on the probability that the destination (home) country starts to export competitively new products or succeed in exporting more intensively.

Findings

Controlling for potential confounding factors which can be correlated to knowledge flows and productivity shifts, the authors find trade-promoting effects via migration flows (mostly immigration) between the two areas, testing our hypotheses by different technology classes of products and different specifications.

Originality/value

The contribution of this work to the literature is threefold. First, by providing evidence on international knowledge diffusion induced by migration flows between MENA and EU regions, like no other work before, the authors document the effects of migration on trade and comparative advantages. Second, unlike standard literature on migration-trade link, the authors focus more on long-term structural changes in comparative advantages than on trade volumes. Third, we exploit how the effect of migration on margins of trade varies according to different types of goods, classified by technological level.
