Abstract

Examines the fifthteenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper tactics to implement the attack detection in medical Internet of things (IoT) devices using improved deep learning architecture for accomplishing the concept bring your own device (BYOD). Here, a simulation-based hospital environment is modeled where many IoT devices or medical equipment are communicated with each other. The node or the device, which is creating the attack are recognized with the support of attribute collection. The dataset pertaining to the attack detection in medical IoT is gathered from each node that is considered as features. These features are subjected to a deep belief network (DBN), which is a part of deep learning algorithm. Despite the existing DBN, the number of hidden neurons of DBN is tuned or optimized correctly with the help of a hybrid meta-heuristic algorithm by merging grasshopper optimization algorithm (GOA) and spider monkey optimization (SMO) in order to enhance the accuracy of detection. The hybrid algorithm is termed as local leader phase-based GOA (LLP-GOA). The DBN is used to train the nodes by creating the data library with attack details, thus maintaining accurate detection during testing.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper has presented novel attack detection in medical IoT devices using improved deep learning architecture as BYOD. With this, this paper aims to show the high convergence and better performance in detecting attacks in the hospital network.

Findings

From the analysis, the overall performance analysis of the proposed LLP-GOA-based DBN in terms of accuracy was 0.25% better than particle swarm optimization (PSO)-DBN, 0.15% enhanced than grey wolf algorithm (GWO)-DBN, 0.26% enhanced than SMO-DBN and 0.43% enhanced than GOA-DBN. Similarly, the accuracy of the proposed LLP-GOA-DBN model was 13% better than support vector machine (SVM), 5.4% enhanced than k-nearest neighbor (KNN), 8.7% finer than neural network (NN) and 3.5% enhanced than DBN.

Originality/value

This paper adopts a hybrid algorithm termed as LLP-GOA for the accurate detection of attacks in medical IoT for improving the enhanced security in healthcare sector using the optimized deep learning. This is the first work which utilizes LLP-GOA algorithm for improving the performance of DBN for enhancing the security in the healthcare sector.

Abstract

Purpose

After almost three centuries of employing western educational approaches, many African societies are still characterized by low western literacy rates, civil conflicts, and underdevelopment. It is obvious that these western educational paradigms, which are not indigenous to Africans, have done relatively little good for Africans. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to argue that the salvation for Africans hinges upon employing indigenous African educational paradigms which can be subsumed under the rubric of ubuntugogy, which the authors define as the art and science of teaching and learning undergirded by humanity toward others.

Design/methodology/approach

Therefore, ubuntugogy transcends pedagogy (the art and science of teaching), andragogy (the art and science of helping adults learn), ergonagy (the art and science of helping people learn to work), and heutagogy (the study of self-determined learning). That many great African minds, realizing the debilitating effects of the western educational systems that have been forced upon Africans, have called for different approaches.

Findings

One of the biggest challenges for studying and teaching about Africa in Africa at the higher education level, however, is the paucity of published material. Automated generation of metadata is one way of mining massive data sets to compensate for this shortcoming.

Originality/value

Thus, the authors address the following major research question in this paper: What is automated generation of metadata and how can the technique be employed from an African-centered perspective? After addressing this question, conclusions and recommendations are offered.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to describe the positive and negative effects of night lights in historical sites, as well as the most salient challenges faced by the visitors of these sites and determine ways to address them. The study aims to suggest several light-and-shadow approaches and designs to enhance the experience of visiting historical sites.

Design/methodology/approach

This study identifies problems of nightlife in historical sites with an online international questionnaire to determine the preferences and difficulties faced by visitors of historical sites during day and night. After that Egypt was determined as a sample case of a developing country; its archaeological sites need to be improved. The main problems of historical Egyptian sites were investigated and approaches in developing historical sites with interactive lighting design were presented after an online questionnaire to the Egyptian society.

Findings

The paper shows that archaeological sites need some development, especially in their technological and lighting aspects, to overcome visitors’ low night-time interest in archaeological sites. Research has found certain limitations in the effects of constructing artificial illumination. The study provides modern sustainable solution for some light challenges in historical sites with approaches and solutions to solve it.

Research limitations/implications

The results of that research could be applied in developing countries, but with larger specific studies to the historical urban locations according to the politics of the country.

Practical implications

The paper includes sustainable approaches in developing historical sites with technological lighting design required to enhance historical sites at night-time and make visits more interactive and interesting.

Originality/value

This paper presents an identified need of historical sites visitors’ to study applying modern approaches in enhancing urban historical sites.

Abstract

Purpose

Expert systems are computer-based systems that mimic the logical processes of human experts or organizations to give advice in a specific domain of knowledge. Fuzzy expert systems use fuzzy logic to handle uncertainties generated by imprecise, incomplete and/or vague information. The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of the methods and applications in fuzzy expert systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have carefully reviewed 281 journal publications and 149 conference proceedings published over the past 37 years since 1982. The authors grouped the journal publications and conference proceedings separately accordingly to the methods, application domains, tools and inference systems.

Findings

The authors have synthesized the findings and proposed useful suggestions for future research directions. The authors show that the most common use of fuzzy expert systems is in the medical field.

Originality/value

Fuzzy logic can be used to manage uncertainty in expert systems and solve problems that cannot be solved effectively with conventional methods. In this study, the authors present a comprehensive review of the methods and applications in fuzzy expert systems which could be useful for practicing managers developing expert systems under uncertainty.
