Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to review some of the academic literature on the circular economy, natural capital and resilience by tourism and hospitality scholars and to examine how a number of companies and industry bodies within the tourism and hospitality industry have used these concepts in their business operations and development plans.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper outlines the importance of sustainability to the tourism and hospitality industry and provides definitions of the concepts of the circular economy, natural capital and resilience. The paper reviews some of the academic literature on these concepts, explores how a number of companies and industry bodies within the tourism and hospitality industry have used them in their business and planning operations and identifies a number of future directions for academic research and managerial contributions.

Findings

The concepts illuminate a range of sustainability challenges and opportunities, and some companies use these concepts in their sustainability strategies and development planning. The current depth of theoretical understanding does not lend itself to management strategies, but one fruitful avenue is to explore how information systems can be better deployed to support these concepts and sustainability management in general.

Originality/value

The paper provides an accessible exploratory review of how academics and companies are focussing on the concepts of the circular economy, natural capital and resilience in the tourism and hospitality industry. As such, it will be of interest to academics, students and practitioners interested in the hospitality industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper contributes to addressing the research gap relating to the absence of a systematic analysis as to how new technologies can support the application of circular economic principles in the tourism industry through the promotion and articulation of a start-up ecosystem able to feed tourism organizations with circular economy solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

A sample from a population of start-ups, mainly Spanish, linked to the circular economy was gathered and analyzed; in addition to secondary data, a survey was designed and administered for the purpose of primary tourism industry data collection.

Findings

A holistic start-up ecosystem for circular tourism is taking shape, facilitated by interactions between tourism and other economic activities, with the aim of tackling a diversity of circular economic objectives. The interest from start-ups in the circular economy for tourism seems to be rising, with attention given to certain technologies in line with the trend toward digitization and automation processes. Nevertheless, the potential for growth in the application of Technology 4.0 remains significant. Finally, the circular principle of reduction (energy and food waste) has emerged as a key objective in tourism.

Originality/value

The article provides insights on the application of circular economic principles in tourism through its interaction with a specialized start-up ecosystem able to support a paradigm shift toward circular tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to shed new light on the process of value creation and business model innovation resulting from circular economy in the context of smart tourism.

Design/methodology/approach

The study embraces a qualitative and exploratory approach related to a single case study. Data have been collected through the integration of web-based desk analysis, interviews and social big data analytics.

Findings

Findings are related to Ecobnb, a network-based tourism company, coherent with the principles of value creation and business model innovation in the context of circular economy and smart tourism.

Research limitations/implications

The study allows understanding of how smart tourism and circular economy can represent two important lenses for managing complexity and driving tourism companies and destinations toward sustainable and smart value creation processes.

Practical implications

Practical implications arise for managers and destination makers in terms of innovation of the tourism management and transition of the business models toward a circular configuration.

Social implications

The study offers social implications by contributing to the dissemination of a culture of sustainability in tourism management and active involvement of local stakeholders in the growth of a tourism destination.

Originality/value

The study provides an original contribution to the debate on tourism by highlighting the obsolescence of traditional models of management in tourism companies and destinations, seen during the recent pandemic emergence, could be solved through the virtuous integration of digital technologies and sustainable approaches.

Abstract

Circular tourism is not a well-established field of research. In this case study, we address sustainable tourism as an approach that goes beyond the optimization of actions and value-added of the individual tourism actors and moves toward a destination approach, with the four elements – cultural, environmental, economic, and social benefits. A focus on partnerships that are addressing a specific destination has made it possible to develop initiatives that go beyond the traditional “green” approach to sustainable tourism, including sustainable transportation infrastructure, waste management, and protection of cultural and natural heritage. The collaboration in the network is central for the development of the understanding of culture and nature as a “common good” that all current and future actors can benefit from, if it is preserved and well maintained. The tourists have become central actors in this approach, as they take part in this regeneration of both nature and culture and therefore change roles from rather passive consumers to active actors in the destination.

Purpose

In the context of circular economy, tourism resources development and integrated marketing need to interact with multiple businesses, data processing with big data technology, and in the information age, the best means of integrated marketing is to integrate business through an information platform. The research purpose of this article is to improve the intelligence of the tourism platform by constructing an OR model, integrate information and improve the data processing effect in an all-round way through data mining.

Design/methodology/approach

This study builds the business interaction in the form of OR (operations research model) model and combines this model with the e-commerce platform to build an online travel consumption model based on the user's online operation mode.

Findings

With the development of the times and the upgrading of industries, tourism and other industries have provided new tourism resources and tourism methods for human beings by virtue of the beautiful environment, special experiences and colorful stories and related industries have been related to the tourism industry based on natural resources, customs and folklore and agricultural experiences. By identifying important nodes with high connectivity in the social network, the weighted centrality algorithm can mine the importance of interest tags.

Originality/value

In addition, this research builds a test platform for model performance analysis and integrates various factors. The results show that the model constructed in this study can further promote the development of tourism, improve the efficiency of tourism resources, provide marketing effects and meet the circular economy theory.

Abstract

Purpose

The whole economy is in a transition process from the linear to the circular paradigm. The tourism industry is no stranger to this paradigm shift, so the purpose of this paper is to stimulate a reflection on the major challenges and opportunities derived from this transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

To inspire discussion, desk research was carried out based on scientific databases (Web of Science and Scopus mainly). This scholarly approach was complemented with another, using internet search engines to find additional documents of a professional nature that could provide extra pieces of evidence about the application of circular economy (CE) in tourism.

Findings

The state-of-the-art in this field is presented, characterized by the scarcity of the scientific literature available and the lack of a common understanding of this concept, with a limited scope in its use. Further, there are very few well-documented initiatives on the CE in the tourism industry. Therefore, this is still an under-researched area that inevitably will deserve much more attention in the years to come. Nonetheless, as a certain degree of terminological confusion was identified, this work is an attempt to help in the conceptual clarification of the CE, with its particularities when is applied to the tourism industry.

Practical implications

The CE concept is a relatively new, but inescapable, paradigm whose application will contribute to a more sustainable tourism industry. The tourism industry has a significant role to play in economic transformation which is ongoing, because of its multiplier effect on the whole economy and its capacity to encourage circular flows among its suppliers and customers. Additionally, it is important to boost this transformation awareness among businesses and consumers, together with some stimuli, particularly for SMEs, with more limited resources for innovation. Effective coordination within the complex and fragmented policy environment is also needed among the various interacting levels (European, national, regional […]) that influence the tourism sector.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first work carried out to systematize what the literature says about the intersection of the CE and tourism.

Abstract

Purpose

This article assesses the degree of adoption of the circular economy model in the tourist accommodation sector. Additionally, the study aims to understand whether the type of accommodation, size and year of construction or remodelling have an impact on the adoption of circular economy practices.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is based on a survey administered to directors and owners of tourist accommodation facilities in Portugal. The questionnaire was developed based on an extensive literature review of circular economy practices in the accommodation sector.

Findings

Accommodation companies currently operate in a linear economy model and are still in the early stages of transitioning to a more circular economic model. Among the most commonly implemented practices are those that represent expenditure savings for accommodation companies. The findings also suggest a growing awareness and commitment to sustainability and circular economy practices in the tourist accommodation sector, particularly in more recently constructed or renovated accommodation.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate the accommodation characteristics that impact the adoption of sustainability and circular economy practices in the tourist accommodation sector. It contributes to the literature by providing primary quantitative data supporting the adoption of such practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the evolution of the tourism ecosystem within a circular economy, considering relevant factors that influence the transition towards the circular economy model.

Design/methodology/approach

This reflection is carried out from an organisational perspective and employs a strategic management approach combined with a neo-institutional theoretical lens.

Findings

Four scenarios are identified after selecting several pertinent internal and external dimensions, which will help to understand the form and pace of the expected transition towards a tourism circular economy.

Research limitations/implications

Other variables could have been used for the scenario creation aim, which can be deemed a limitation.

Practical implications

Tourism operators can position themselves within this framework to analyse their conditions in order to address this unavoidable strategic change.

Originality/value

To the best of the author’s knowledge, this is the first academic work written in this line of research.

Abstract

Purpose

This research aims to demonstrate how the circular economy is employed to drive the sustainability of the tourism industry in Krabi, Thailand, through the concept of mindful consumption and service-dominant logic (hereafter S-D logic).

Design/methodology/approach

A seven-year longitudinal study (2013–2020) was conducted through four studies from different perspectives, including macro, meso and micro levels of development in Krabi province.

Findings

Krabi tourism stakeholders have collaborated to co-create green culture and behavior whereby the value network among stakeholders plays an important role in driving the circular economy in practice.

Research limitations/implications

This study provides an understanding of how the circular economy society has been co-created. However, further research should be conducted in other tourism cities by focusing on the key success factors that drive the circular economy.

Originality/value

The longitudinal study with multi-perspective micro, macro and meso levels of development in this study has shed the light on how the circular economy (CE) policy can be turned into practice.

Abstract

Purpose

In the last decade, the hospitality sector has undergone numerous changes in the organization and structure of its business models. Specifically, the adoption of new digital technologies has initiated transformative changes toward circular economy and sustainability. The present study aims to analyze whether the use of the digital reservation system in circular entrepreneurship businesses has an impact on entrepreneurs’ satisfaction and trust in the in circular economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The data collected via a survey of 317 entrepreneurs who use a circular economy strategy were analyzed using SEM in a proposed model based on circular entrepreneurship businesses and the adoption of digital reservation systems.

Findings

The results showed a positive relationship between usability and perceived ease of use and user satisfaction and trust in using digital reservation systems to boost circular entrepreneurship in hospitality. Therefore, it was identified that adopting a digital reservation system can increase the efficiency of entrepreneur resources, as well as lead to creation of sustainable knowledge, augment the use of new sources of user information, improve prediction of services and demand and, consequently, boost sustainability and circular economy.

Research limitations/implications

Future research can use the results of the present study to investigate how digital technologies work and affect user trust, satisfaction, and use of these systems in entrepreneurs’ projects in hospitality. In addition, it would be interesting to explore how these factors influence hospitality in different business models that support circular economy in tourism. To this end, researchers can use the variables used in the present study, along with other variables, to extend the proposed model and deepen the authors' research. In summary, this study contributes to the literature on the use of applications in hospitality sector and offer useful insight on how the adoption and use of new technologies can drive the management of knowledge and technology development, decision making and acquisition of new data sources that improve the experience of both entrepreneurs and users that interact with their services to enable circular entrepreneurship.

Practical implications

Hospitality entrepreneurs can use the results of the present study to better evaluate how using these applications can affect the communication protocols with their employees and stakeholders. Furthermore, entrepreneurs operating in the hospitality sector can use the results to develop action plans focused on the circular economy, new knowledge creation, as well as development and adoption of new digital technologies that enable circular entrepreneurship. In this way, hospitality companies will be able to effectively combine both more traditional offline channels and new technologies, such as mobile applications or the Internet.

Social implications

The authors' prediction of a strong positive link between perceived usefulness and user trust was also supported by the results of data analysis. The finding that perceived utility increases user trust in entrepreneurs when making adopting these technologies is also consistent with other similar studies. Finally, the results of this study also confirmed the hypothesized link between the perceived utility of digital technologies and user satisfaction. Taken together, the results also highlight the relevance of analyzing the use of digital reservation systems in the hospitality sector to enable circular entrepreneurship.

Originality/value

Taken together, the results highlight the relevance of analyzing the use of digital reservation systems in the hospitality sector to enable circular entrepreneurship and increase the perceived usefulness of new digital technologies so that to improve sustainable actions and the circular economy globally.
