Abstract

Purpose

The article presents the phenomenon of hazards related to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the food supply chain (FSC) by identifying possible stakeholders of a seafood company who might be influenced by the hazards.

Design/methodology/approach

A case study analysis was conducted with a review of the organization's documentation alongside a semi-structured interview and an impact effort matrix.

Findings

Seven out of 18 stakeholders had to strongly engage in minimizing the effects of hazards related to SARS-CoV-2. The most important areas of cooperation regarded safety were identified. Both external and internal documents and reports regarding the minimizing of negative effects of hazards related to SARS-CoV-2 were required by institutional clients, official authorities and the studied organization itself. The proper identification of stakeholders and up-to-date knowledge about them allowed the organization to react faster and protect the FSC.

Research limitations/implications

The authors’ research was based on qualitative methods, so it lacked a diagnostic survey, along with similar studies for comparison of results and approaches.

Practical implications

The surveyed company may be a good benchmark for others to follow when choosing the appropriate approach in the field of stakeholder analysis for addressing new emerging risks.

Originality/value

The findings are important, timely and original, and they focus on a subject rarely studied in the literature. The information from the paper applies to numerous groups of food companies.

Abstract

Purpose

We aimed to identify factors that influence student engagement in distance learning.

Design/methodology/approach

The research involved a group of 671 students from economic and technical higher education institutions in Poland. We collected the data with the CAWI technique and an original survey. Next, we processed the data using principal component analysis and then used the extracted components as predictors in the induced smoothing LASSO regression model.

Findings

The components of the students’ attitude toward remote classes learning conditions are: satisfaction with teachers’ approach, attitude to distance learning, the system of students’ values and motivation, IT infrastructure of the university, building a network of contacts and communication skills. The final model consisted of seven statistically significant variables, encompassing the student’s sex, level of studies and the first five extracted PCs. Student’s system of values and motivation as well as attitude toward distance learning, were those variables that had the biggest influence on student engagement.

Practical implications

The research result suggests that in addition to students’ system of values and motivation and their attitude toward distance learning, the satisfaction level of teachers’ attitude is one of the three most important factors that influence student engagement during the distance learning process.

Originality/value

The main value of this article is the statistical model of student engagement during distance learning. The article fills the research gap in identifying and evaluating the impact of various factors determining student engagement in the distance learning process.

Research Background

The transformation towards the Green Economy (GE) in Poland is a relatively new topic for researchers, policymakers and business practitioners. A comprehensive picture of the shift towards the GE can help mentioned groups translate theoretical assumptions into practice.

Purpose of the Article

This chapter presents the assessment of Poland's shift towards the GE, measured by the proposed Green Transformation Index (GTI).

Methodology

The set of GE indicators was elaborated in Structured Literature Review (SLR) variation method. Then, this set of indicators was compared with the Statistics Poland (GUS) secondary data and employed in the taxonometric calculation methods.

Findings

In the result, the GTI for the Polish economy was proposed and calculated between 2007 and 2020. The GTI allowed us to present a dynamic analysis of the transformation towards GE in Poland.

Abstract

Purpose

Manufacturing of products loaded with torque in an incremental process should take into account the strength in relation to the internal structure of the details. Incremental processes allow for obtaining various internal structures, both in the production process itself and as a result of designing a three-dimensional computer-aided design model with programmable strength. Finite element analysis (FEA) is often used in the modeling process, especially in the area of topological optimization. There is a lack of data for numerical simulation processes, especially for the design of products loaded with torque and manufactured additive manufacturing (AM). The purpose of this study is to present the influence of the internal structure of samples produced in the material extrusion (MEX) technology on the tested parameters in the process of unidirectional torsion and to present the practical application of the obtained results on the example of a spline connection.

Design/methodology/approach

The work involved a process of unidirectional torsion of samples with different internal structures, produced in the MEX technology. The obtained results allowed for the FEA of the spline connection, which was compared with the test of unidirectional torsion of the connection.

Findings

The performance of the unidirectional torsion test and the obtained results allowed us to determine the influence of the internal structure and its density on the achieved values of the tested parameters of the analyzed prototype materials. The performed FEA of the spline connection reflects the deformation of the produced connection in the unidirectional torsion test.

Originality/value

There are no standards for the torsional strength of elements manufactured from polymeric materials using MEX methods, which is why the industry often does not use these methods due to the need to spend time on research, which is associated with high costs. In addition, the industry is vary of unknown solutions and limits their use. Therefore, it is important to determine, among others, the strength parameters of components manufactured using incremental methods, including MEX, so that they can be widely used because of their great potential and thus gain trust among the recipient market. In addition, taking into account the different densities of the applied filling structure of the samples made of six prototype materials commonly available from manufacturers allowed us to determine its effect on the torsional strength. The presented work can be the basis for constructors dealing with the design of elements manufactured in the MEX technology in terms of torsional strength. The obtained results also complement the existing material base in the FEA software and perform the strength analysis before the actual details are made to verify the existing irregularities that affect the strength of the details. The analysis of unidirectional torsion made it possible to supplement the material cards, which often refer to unprocessed material, e.g. in MEX processes.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to show the influence of selected mechanical parameters of the rotor on the maximum speed and parameters of the electric motor.

Design/methodology/approach

A simplified mechanical analysis of the rotor of the electric motor was conducted, determining the safety factor of the motor. An analysis of the impact of key rotor parameters (significant from the mechanical strength perspective) on the electromagnetic parameters and the safety factor of the selected high-speed electric motor was carried out. The influence of changes in the rotor’s geometrical dimensions (centrifugal force) on the electromagnetic parameters of the electric motor was shown.

Findings

The study shows the impact of changes in selected rotor parameters on electromagnetic parameters and the safety factor of a high-speed electric motor (at its required operating point of 45,000 rpm). The dependence of the safety factor as a function of the maximum motor speed was determined for the proposed rotor modifications.

Practical implications

The proposed modifications can be used in larger drive systems. They have practically no impact on increasing the value of the motor’s moment of inertia (they do not degrade the dynamics of the motor’s operation).

Originality/value

It was proposed to use a new design coefficient which is in relation to the motor’s safety coefficient. It has been shown that a minimal modification of the motor rotor allows to increase its maximum speed by several dozen per cent (while maintaining the safety factor). It has also been shown that when operating at maximum speed within the safe range, the change in the geometrical dimensions of the rotor hardly influences the change in the value of the centrifugal force.

Abstract

Purpose

Designing new aircraft that are state-of-the-art and beyond always requires the development of new technologies. This paper aims to present lessons learned while designing, building and testing new UAVs in the configuration of the flying wing. The UAV contains a number of aerodynamic devices that are not obvious solutions and use the latest manufacturing technology achievements, such as 3D printing.

Design/methodology/approach

The design solutions were applied on an airworthy aircraft and checked during test flights. The process was first conducted on the smaller UAV, and based on the test outcomes, improvements were made and then applied on the larger version of the UAV, where they were verified.

Findings

A number of practical findings were identified. For example, the use of 3D printing technology for manufacturing integrated pressure ports, investigation of the adverse yaw effect on the flying wing configuration and the effectiveness of winglet rudders in producing yawing moment.

Practical implications

All designed devices were tested in practice on the flying aircraft. It allowed for improved aircraft performance and handling characteristics. Several of the technologies used improved the speed and quality of aerodynamic device design and manufacturing, which also influences the reliability of the aircraft.

Originality/value

The paper presents how 3D printing technology can be utilized for manufacturing of aerodynamic devices. Specially developed techniques for control surface design, which can affect adverse yaw problem and aircraft handling characteristics, were described.

Abstract

Purpose

Recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and, at its core, Machine Learning (ML) offer opportunities for organizations to develop new or enhance existing capabilities. Despite the endless possibilities, organizations face operational challenges in harvesting the value of ML-based capabilities (MLbC), and current research has yet to explicate these challenges and theorize their remedies. To bridge the gap, this study explored the current practices to propose a systematic way of orchestrating MLbC development, which is an extension of ongoing digitalization of organizations.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from Finland's Artificial Intelligence Accelerator (FAIA) and complemented by follow-up interviews with experts outside FAIA in Europe, China and the United States over four years. Data were analyzed through open coding, thematic analysis and cross-comparison to develop a comprehensive understanding of the MLbC development process.

Findings

The analysis identified the main components of MLbC development, its three phases (development, release and operation) and two major MLbC development challenges: Temporal Complexity and Context Sensitivity. The study then introduced Fostering Temporal Congruence and Cultivating Organizational Meta-learning as strategic practices addressing these challenges.

Originality/value

This study offers a better theoretical explanation for the MLbC development process beyond MLOps (Machine Learning Operations) and its hindrances. It also proposes a practical way to align ML-based applications with business needs while accounting for their structural limitations. Beyond the MLbC context, this study offers a strategic framework that can be adapted for different cases of digital transformation that include automation and augmentation of work.

Abstract

Research Background

Poland generally has a homogeneous society, conservative towards changes and diversity. The corporate culture in Polish companies reflects this mindset, leading to a lack of inclusion on the corporate board. Additionally, many companies may not fully understand the benefits of an inclusive workplace and legal requirements for gender diversity.

The Purpose of the Chapter

The main objective of the study is to provide a better understanding of the attitude of Polish companies towards diversity policies and reveal differences in actual and expected levels of gender diversity in corporate boards. Thus, we examine compliance with the gender diversity guidelines in the corporate governance code.

Methodology

Using a sample of 367 Polish companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange, we study the composition of the management and supervisory boards to check if they meet the expected gender diversity criteria. We also look at companies' explanations for non-compliance with the main principles regarding diversity policy.

Findings

We find that the current composition of corporate boards of stock companies in Poland is male-dominated. Women represent only 12.72% and 17.12% of the management board and supervisory board members, respectively, and 68.94% (42.23%) of companies have no women on their management (supervisory) board. Moreover, only a small percentage of companies comply with the principles related to gender diversity. Qualifications, experience and education are pointed out as the most important criteria for decision-making on board appointments, with only 2% of companies applying gender as an additional criterion. The study suggests that larger companies are more likely to implement diversity policies.

Abstract

Purpose

This study presents an image processing algorithm capable of calculating selected flight parameters requested by flight control systems to guide aircraft along the horizontal projection of the landing trajectory. The parameters identified based on the basics of the image of the Calvert light system appearing in the on-board video system are used by flight control algorithms that imitate the pilot’s schematics of control. Controls were generated using a fuzzy logic expert system. This study aims to analyse an alternative to classical solutions that can be applied to some specific cases.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses theoretical discussions and breakdowns to create the basics for the development of structures for both image processing algorithms and control algorithms. An analytical discussion on the first stage was transformed into laboratory rig tests using a real autopilot unit. The results of this research were verified in a series of software-in-the-loop computer simulations.

Findings

The image processing method extracts the most crucial parameters defining the relative position of the aircraft to the runway, as well as the control algorithm that uses it.

Practical implications

In flight control systems that do not use any dedicated ground or satellite infrastructure to land the aircraft.

Originality/value

This paper presents the original approach of the author to aircraft control in cases where visual signals are used to determine the flight trajectory of the aircraft.
