Abstract

Television and the media generally have raised the profile of entrepreneurs and we imagine them to be young, energetic and creative people. Research shows us that the older you are when setting up a business, the greater its chances of success. Here, Professor Tom Cannon puts things in a global perspective and tells us about the challenges that budding silver entrepreneurs face and what is being done in the north of England to remove those barriers.

Abstract

Few aspects of management pose more challenges or bring out more corporate dilemmas than the process involved in building creativity into the workings of the large, complex, modern organisation. To be more accurate, the difficulties probably lie far more in wedding creativity to effectiveness in the firm's internal operations or its relationships with the environment. The challenges lie in seeking new and creative responses to the problems posed by change, competitive action and the variety of pressures facing the firm. The dilemma is posed by the tendency to introduce systems, structures and methods of operating which achieve operating efficiencies at least in the short term, but which tend to introduce inflexibility and rigidity into the organisation.

Abstract

In the last four years, since Volume I of this Bibliography first appeared, there has been an explosion of literature in all the main functional areas of business. This wealth of material poses problems for the researcher in management studies — and, of course, for the librarian: uncovering what has been written in any one area is not an easy task. This volume aims to help the librarian and the researcher overcome some of the immediate problems of identification of material. It is an annotated bibliography of management, drawing on the wide variety of literature produced by MCB University Press. Over the last four years, MCB University Press has produced an extensive range of books and serial publications covering most of the established and many of the developing areas of management. This volume, in conjunction with Volume I, provides a guide to all the material published so far.

Abstract

Change, Adaption and Development are central to modern marketing. This paper provides an overview of the subject area of innovation and new product development. The critical role of change in modern industrial and industrialising societies is explored in depth. Emphasis is given to the managerial implications of research to date. Key issues such as the interplay between creativity, the motivating force behind invention, and control, the basis for successful innovation, are reviewed Changing attitudes and approaches to new product development play a major part in this study, particularly the growing awareness that innovation is no longer an end in itself, but a part of a carefully controlled marketing system.

Abstract

This paper adopts a relatively broadbrush approach to an examination of the current state of commercial information and related services. An attempt will be made to integrate the analysis of public and private services while exploring the ways in which more need or requirement based initiatives are taking place within large corporations and other organisations. During this paper the impact of two parallel developments on commercial information and related services will be reviewed. These are:

Abstract

The aim of this article is to review the work currently being conducted at Durham University Business School to help small firms to develop their export potential. It describes the evolution of an Export Planning, Organisation, Research and Training System (EXPORTS). The foundation stone of the system is a training programme developed in conjunction with the Rubber and Plastics Processing Industry Training Board. Much of the article describes the development and evolution of this course. A keynote of the article is the progress that can be made with in‐company work providing the Training Board is willing to involve Training Advisers actively in course development and implementation. This innovative programme is evaluated and the routes to further action identified and reviewed.

Abstract

Describes the findings of the Management Development to the Millennium project of the Institute of Management. The research was carried out by two working parties, one examining developments over the period 1987‐94, the other looking ahead to 2001. The project found that there had been significant growth in training and development, and in vocational qualifications. Skills required in order to ensure future business prosperity included strategic thinking, and ability to manage change.

Abstract

The dynamics and performance of female‐owned companies in the United Kingdom are focused on. Women can be differentiated by behavioural and motivational factors in their desire to start up in business, although these groupings are fluid and women are capable of changing into different modes of entrepreneur. The personal ambitions of women and their domestic arrangements largely determine the ways in which their enterprises evolve. The performance of the businesses is then explored from the perspective of individual qualitative and quantitative criteria of success. Initial success was not judged in terms of conventional economic criteria of profitability and advance orders. Regardless of business age, differences do appear between current and future success criteria.
