Abstract

Purpose

The information of social media is not often written in ordinary web pages. Nevertheless, it is difficult to extract such information from social media because such services include so much information. Furthermore, various topics are mixed in social media communities. The authors designate such important and unique information related to social media as tip information. In this paper, they aim to propose a method to extract tip information that has been classified by topic from social networking services as a first step in extracting tip information from social media.

Design/methodology/approach

Themes of many kinds exist in a social media community because users write contents freely. Then the authors first detect the topics from the community and cluster the comment based on the topics. Subsequently, they extract tip information from each cluster. In this time, the tip information is include a user's experience and it has common important words.

Findings

The authors used an experiment to confirm that their proposed method can extract appropriate tip information from a community that a user specifies. The average precision is 69 per cent. A comparison of the authors' proposed method and baseline which is without detection of topic and clustering, the average precision obtained using the authors' proposed method is 18 per cent greater than the baseline.

Originality/value

The authors have three points to extract tip information from social media: topic detection and clustering from the social media using LDA method; extracting an author's actual experiences; and creation of a tip keyword dictionary from user experiments.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the stability behavior of the omnidirectional mobile robot with active dual-wheel caster (ADWC) assemblies and provide a stable trajectory without any tip-over incident. The omnidirectional mobile robot to be developed is for transporting cuboid-shaped objects.

Design/methodology/approach

The omnidirectional transport mobile robot is designed using an ADWC assemblies structure, the tip-over occurrence is estimated based on the support forces of an active footprint, the tip-over direction is predicted, the tip-over stability is enhanced to prevent the tip-over occurrence and a fast traveling motion is provided.

Findings

The omnidirectional mobile robot tends to tip-over more on the sides with small ranges of tip-over angle. The proposed method for estimating the tip-over occurrence and enhancing the stability using the gyroscopic torque device was feasible as the tip-over prevention system of the omnidirectional mobile robot with ADWC assemblies.

Originality/value

The research addresses the study of the tip-over stability for the omnidirectional mobile robot that possesses an active footprint. It also addresses the prediction of the tip-over occurrence using the derived dynamical model together with force-angle stability measure and the tip-over stability enhancement method using a single-gimbal control moment gyro device.

Abstract

Youth and young adults with emotional and/or behavioral difficulties (EBD) face particularly difficult challenges in their efforts to fit into adult roles and functions. The purpose of this chapter is to assist providers, educators, and administrators from the mental health, education, child welfare, justice/corrections, and adult service system sectors understand (a) a practice for improving the progress and outcomes for young people in transition, and (b) how this practice model is implemented in communities to impact the lives of youth in transition to adulthood. This is accomplished in two major parts in this chapter. The first part provides an overview of the Transition to Independence Process (TIP) model, a description of its status as an evidence-supported practice, and tools and strategies that support its implementation in communities and regions across North America. The TIP model is further illustrated through a description of how it is applied with a young person. The second part of the chapter provides an overview of implementation science, a description of how its strategies and tools can guide the implementation of an intervention or model; and an illustration of a large-scale TIP implementation initiative with collaboratives of agencies and schools. This chapter concludes with implications regarding the importance of having effective transition-to-adulthood models; and ensuring the implementation and sustainability of these to improve the progress and outcomes of youth and young adults with EBD.

Abstract

The extra-low minimum wage for US restaurant workers has remained unchanged for over 30 years. Periodic campaigns have brought this wage, and its connection to the perpetuation of inequality and exploitative work, to public attention, but these campaigns have met resistance from both employers and restaurant workers. This article draws on a workplace ethnography in a restaurant front-of-house, and in-depth interviews with tipped food service workers, to examine the tipped labour process and begin to answer a central question: why would any workers oppose a wage increase? It argues that the constituting of tips as a formal wage created for workers a two-employer problem, wherein customers assume the role of secondary, unregulated, employers in the workplace. Ultimately, the tipped wage poses a longer-term strategic obstacle for workers in their position relative to management and ability to organize to shape the terms and conditions of their work.

Introduction: Considering the facts that hospitality employees belong to the category of low paid workers, tips are an important source of their incomes. It is very important to determine the nature of the relationship between dependence on tips among hotel employees on their job satisfaction due to the possible influence on their turnover intentions. Aim: The aim of this chapter was to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction, the dependence on tips and turnover intentions among hotel employees. Method: Data were collected during spring 2020 in the hotels on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. A total of 213 employees from different departments were included in the research. Findings: Correlation analysis showed that there is a small negative correlation between job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Significant medium correlation is calculated between dependence on tips and turnover intentions. Significant negative correlation exists between job satisfaction and dependence on tips.

Abstract

Current theoretical frameworks within economics have so far been unable to adequately explain why people tip. This chapter synthesizes anthropological method and theory into a symbolic interactionist approach, attempting to access, through ethnography, the negotiated meanings underlying and actuating tip payment in Vancouver restaurants. Customers tip for a variety of reasons, including (1) for good service, (2) to follow a social norm, (3) out of sympathetic feelings, (4) to demonstrate or enhance social standing, and (5) to secure a specific preference. The disconnect between common rationalizations for tipping, which are often reflections of formalist economic canon, and how customers actually tip, that is, according to social, cultural, and moral factors, suggests that the popular distinction between “economic” and “non-economic” exchanges is ideologically maintained. Tipping illustrates the existence and contours of what Hart (2005) refers to as the two circuits of social life – but also that these two circuits are ideological constructs.

Abstract

This chapter focuses on examining how changes in the liquidity differential between nominal and TIPS yields influence optimal portfolio allocations in U.S. Treasury securities. Based on a nonparametric estimation technique and comparing the optimal allocation decisions of mean-variance and CRRA investor, when investment opportunities are time varying, I present evidence that liquidity risk premium is a significant risk-factor in a portfolio allocation context. In fact, I find that a conditional allocation strategy translates into improved in-sample and out-of-sample asset allocation and performance. The analysis of the portfolio allocation to U.S. government bonds is particularly important for central banks, specially in developing countries, given the fact that, collectively they have accumulate a large holdings of U.S. securities over the last 15 years.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the rapid development in artificial intelligence (AI), the hotel industry is deploying AI-based systems. In line with this important development, this study aims to examine the impact of trust in the hotel and AI-related performance ambiguity on consumers’ engagement with AI-based systems. This study ultimately examined the impact of engagement on consumers’ intentions to stay in hotels offering such systems, and intentions to tip.

Design/methodology/approach

This study developed a conceptual model based on the social cognition theory. The study used an online survey methodology and collected data from a nationwide sample of 400 hotel consumers from the USA. The data analysis was conducted with structural equation modeling.

Findings

Consumers’ engagement is strongly influenced by their trust in the hotel but not by performance ambiguity associated with AI. In turn, engagement strongly influenced consumers’ intentions to stay in hotels that have such systems and their intentions to tip.

Originality/value

As AI systems capable of making decisions for consumers are becoming increasingly present in hotels, little is known about the way consumers engage with such systems and whether their engagement leads to economic impact. This is the first study that validated a model that explains intentions to stay and tip for services facilitated by autonomous AI-based systems that can make decisions for consumers.

Abstract

Purpose

Service tip is an optional gift that is given by the customers to the waiters (or any other service staffs) for their services. Although the service tips are given to the waiters or service staffs, many restaurant owners or managements take away such gifts from the service staffs. This paper aims to identify the relationship between tips retention practice (TRP) and returning intention (RI) of the British customers to the same Indian restaurants for dining once they know that such tips are retained by the owners not by the service staffs. TRP was further divided into positive TRP (service staffs retaining the tips) and negative TRP (owners or management retaining the tips). The study further used a moderating variable (Female Customers’ Role) to test the moderating effect on the direct relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

The author purposively selected 1,223 British diners who take dining services at different Indian restaurants and used a structured survey instrument to collect primary data from those selected respondents. The author used SPSS 25 for descriptive statistics and a covariance-based structural equation modeling through AMOS 25.

Findings

Based on survey responses and proper statistical analysis, it was revealed that a positive TRP has a significant positive relationship with positive RI, whereas a negative TRP also has a significant positive relationship with negative RI. The results further disclosed that such a relationship can be strengthened by the Female Customers’ Role, that is, female diners are particularly reluctant in returning to those Indian restaurants where they experience a negative TRP.

Originality/value

This is one of the few empirical research attempts that have tried to reveal the dining customers’ intention toward TRPs. The author expects that the study results will contribute to upcoming investigations focusing on TRPs and policies. The author further anticipates that the study findings will guide the Indian restaurant managements in shaping their TRPs and policies.
