Abstract

Purpose

Given the fact that the income disparity has become extremely severe in rural China, the purpose of this paper is to examine heterogeneity in food consumption among various income classes and to investigate the impact of changes in income distribution patterns on food demand in rural China.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the authors partition the households into five income classes according to the distribution of household per capita net income. Using household data drawn from the China Health and Nutrition Survey in 2011, a two-stage demand model is applied to estimate a food demand system for each of the income classes. After obtaining the estimated income elasticities of eight studied food groups for each income class, the authors then examine the responsiveness of food demand to the changes in income distribution by means of four scenarios with varying income distribution.

Findings

The empirical results indicate that substantial differences in food consumption exist across various income classes. Specifically, the lowest-income households are more sensitive to price and income changes for most studied food groups than the highest-income households are. In general, income responsiveness is higher for meats, aquatic products and dairy products. Based on estimated income elasticities, the projected food consumption under different income distribution patterns shows that changes in income distribution have significant influences on food consumption. In addition, the authors conclude that a more equal distribution of income would be associated with a higher demand for food in rural China.

Originality/value

This paper employs a two-stage demand model to estimate food demand in rural China by income classes. The results imply substantial differences in food demand for various income classes. Therefore, income distribution should be taken into account instead of an average estimation for the population as a whole when investigating food demand in rural China. Given the significant changes in income distribution in rural China, this study provides several important policy implications to alleviate income inequality and poverty, as well as to improve nutrition for lower-income classes.

Purpose

With the rise in the opportunity to go to college, the purpose of this paper is to identify if China's rural poor are being excluded from the university system, and if so, why.

Design/methodology/approach

Two sets of the authors' own primary survey data were used: a group of randomly selected high school students in Shaanxi Province and a census of all freshmen entering into four universities in Sichuan, Anhui and Shaanxi. The intention was to show if the rate of the rural poor attending universities is lower than that of urban students and that of rural non‐poor; also to identify the barriers to education (if they exist) that are keeping enrollment rates low for the rural poor. The authors used ordinary least squares method to make the estimations.

Findings

Matriculation rate of the poor into college was found to be substantially lower than the students from non‐poor families. Clearly, barriers exist that are excluding the rural poor; however, the authors demonstrate that the real barriers are not at the point of college admissions, but before students have even matriculated into high school.

Originality/value

This is the first empirical work which studies the barriers that keep the poor out of university.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reveal the distributional characteristics and evolutional patterns in source periodicals, topics, authors, funding, and institutes of research papers in Chinese Agricultural Economics so as to understand the current situations and developmental tendency of Chinese agricultural economics research over the past decade.

Design/methodology/approach

Using the citation analysis method, this paper analyzed the distributional characteristics and evolution of source periodicals, fields, authors and topics of 2,203 highly cited journal papers from the database of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and 189 cited journal papers from database of Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) in agricultural economics first-authored by Chinese scholars from 2006 to 2015.

Findings

First, over the past decade, agricultural economics research in China has seen a rapid development. Specially, 103 scholars and 42 institutes have played key roles in the development, and 12 Chinese periodicals and 3 international journals have been the most influential outlets. Second, the coverage of the topics in Chinese agricultural economics research is broad and has expanded over the past decade. The rural land issue has been the most popular topic, while the issues regarding rural institutional arrangements and industrialization in rural areas have been explored extensively. However, issues in other fields, such as agricultural markets and trade, rural labor, food safety, etc. have to be further studied. Third, the improvements of economic theory and quantitative analytic techniques, the supports from research funding, and an increase in the collaboration between Chinese scholars and those from other countries have made great contribution to the rapid development of Chinese agricultural economics research over the past decade.

Originality/value

This paper is an original work that identifies the most influential journal papers including highly cited journal papers from CNKI and cited journal papers from SSCI, using citation frequency and standard Essential Science Indicators method. This is a contribution relative to the methods used by previous studies, which did not account for frequency of citation of a paper. Moreover, this study is based on data from two databases, CNKI and SSCI, suggesting that the coverage of sample papers is broader compared to those of previous studies.

Es wurde eingeschätzt, daß die Tourismuswirtschaft 1992 weltweit einen Umsatz von 3 Milliarden US‐$ erreichte und zwischen 110 und 120 Millionen Menschen beschäftigte (Lipman, 1992). Ein kleiner Teil dieses eindrucksvollen Resultats kommt aus dem osteuropäischen Raum. Osteuropa — nicht geographisch oder kulturell, sondern nach dem ehemaligen politisch‐ökonomischen Verbund verstanden — ist jetzt leichter bereisbar fr westliche Touristen als früher. Deshalb nutzten viele die Möglichkeit,in den Osten einen ersten Blick zu werfen oder das Land zu besuchen, in welchem sie vor mehr als 40 Jahren geboren wurden. Es ist deshalb nicht verwunderlich, wenn diese Länder darauf hoffen, in der näheren Zukunft eine größere Anzahl Gäste zu empfangen. Es ist auch nicht überraschend, wenn die Qualität der touristischen Waren zusammen mit einem bestimmten Preisniveau ein Preis/Leistungs‐Verhältnis erzeugt, das stark genug ist, erfolgreich den Wettbewerb gegen westliche Reiseziele anzutreten. Werden aber “Neugier” und “Heimat/Heimweh” weiterhin motivierend bleiben? Bereits 1992 melden drei osteuropäische Länder eine Abnahme touristischer Ankünfte. Probleme bereiten auch die geringen Übernachtungszahlen und der hohe Anteil an Tagestouristen.

Abstract

The article deals with factors that act as an incentive to internationalisation of the hotels in the small‐to‐medium‐sized enterprises (SME) category in the traditional tourism countries, and also discusses the obstacles to internationalisation. The “OLI” approach according to Dunning (ownership advantages, location‐specific advantages, advantages of internalisation) is tested against the results of a survey of hotelkeepers in the Alpine countries, particularly Austria. It is not just the size of the enterprise that acts as a limit on the extent of internationalisation of SMEs. Other factors that determine the attitude taken towards internationalisation include market intelligence, financing problems, the degree of entrepreneurial spirit, and the specific nature of tourism services.

Schmoller reserves his admiration for those entrepreneurs who succeeded in the acquisition of wealth but whose primary goal was the promotion of the public interest. Such individuals as List, Steiner, Geibel, Abbe and von Mevissen are of this sort. Schmoller is lavish in his praise of them. Schmoller is critical of the natural economy of Adam Smith where each individual is activated by his own self‐interest. Schmoller sees in the higher law a guide to human behaviour. Moneymakers are not necessarily men of great talent. For this reason Schmoller prefers the man who is driven by the pursuit of idealistic goals. Schmoller′s historical approach to the political economy, one shared by some in the Western world, is to be contrasted with the view that the best type of social order permits the individual to pursue his self‐interest and that such a pursuit is in keeping with the social interest.

Zusammenfassung Die vorliegenden Ergebnisse des “Workshop 2” verdeutlichen, daß intensiv nach einem gemeinsamen Verständnis zur strategischen Tourismuspolitik in Abgrenzung der Felder Tourismuspolitik (policy) und — Strategie gesucht und dieses Verständnis in den genannten Modellen festgehalten wurde. Trotzdem haben gerade die Fallbeispiele gezeigt, daß jede spezifische Situation verschieden handzuhaben ist und deshalb auch unterschiedliche methodische Ansätze zur Analyse der Fallstudie herangezogen worden sind. Auch konnte die Begriffsverwendung von Tourismus‐politik und Strategie nicht immer eindeutig zugeordnet werden. Ein allgemein gltiges Rahmenmodell — wie in Kapitel 3 und vier aufgezeigt — ist deshalb nur erschwert im Detail darstellbar. Zur Notwendigkeit einer strategischen Tourismuspolitik ist insgesamt eine große Übereinstimmung festzuhalten.

Abstract

Purpose

Precontractual liability may be imposed when a party acts in bad faith to damage the other party, when a party negotiates in order to discover business secrets with no intention of reaching a final agreement, or when a party to a non‐binding letter of intent terminates negotiations during a later phase of negotiations without legitimate reason. The purpose of this article is to clarify the concept of the duty to negotiate in good faith, either for Civil Law or Common Law system practitioners.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper describes the concept of good faith and fair dealing and its effects on the negotiation process. After establishing this description, we will analyze the differences in the interpretation and the application of the concept of good faith in the pre‐contractual procedure. The article explores the Civil Law approach for this matter, followed by the Common Law approach. In order to illustrate the Common Law System, we will focus on English and American Law, while we will look mainly at German, Brazilian and French Law to illustrate the Civil Law. In the conclusion, we will compare the approaches of the two systems.

Findings

The obligation of good faith in negotiation is found practically in all civil law system countries and generally provides a remedy for a wrongful conduct produced by a bad faith act. However, there is no general rule in Common Law requiring the parties to negotiate in good faith. We are in favor of applying a more expansive view of good faith obligations for international business transactions involving two or more different countries from these two different legal systems (civil law and common law), so as to apply them to the duty to negotiate arising from preliminary agreements and negotiations.Although there is no general rule about pre‐contractual liability in the common law system, we strongly believe that the existing body of case law and statutes may punish a party which engages in unfair conduct at the pre‐contract stage if the parties had signed a letter of intent or a memorandum of understanding, requiring them expressly and clearly to “act in good faith” and/or “to use their best efforts to reach an agreement”.

Originality/value

This article has discussed a relatively unexplored area related to the obligation of good faith in negotiation either for civil law and common law's practitioners. Our research has highlighted the complexity of this matter between these two legal systems, and has helped to the identification of the concept of good faith in a relation between two or more parties.
