Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to determine the sealing performance of face seals by numerical analysis of thermoelastohydrodynamic characteristics of supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) spiral groove face seals in the supercritical regime.

Design/methodology/approach

The spiral groove face seal was used as the research object. The distribution of lubricating film pressure and temperature was analysed by solving the gas state, Reynolds and energy equations using the finite difference method. Furthermore, the influence law of sealing performance was obtained.

Findings

Close to the critical temperature of S-CO2, face distortions produced by increasing pressure lead to divergent clearance and resulted in reduced opening force. In the state of S-CO2, the face distortions generated by increasing seal temperature lead to convergent clearance, which enhances the opening force. In addition, near the critical temperature of S-CO2, the opening force may be reduced by 10%, and the leakage rate of the seal sharply increases by a factor of four.

Originality/value

The thermoelastohydrodynamic characteristics of supercritical CO2 face seals are illustrated considering the actual gas effect including compressibility, heat capacity and viscosity. Face distortions and sealing performance were calculated under different seal pressures and seal temperatures in the supercritical regime, as well as with N2 for comparison.

Abstract

Purpose

Current lubrication analyses of misaligned journal bearings are generally performed under some given preconditions. The purpose of this paper is to calculate the lubrication characteristics of a journal bearing with journal misalignment caused by shaft deformation under load, considering the surface roughness, thermal effect and (thermal and elastic) deformation of bearing surface simultaneously.

Design/methodology/approach

The lubrication of bearing was analyzed by average flow model based generalized Reynolds equation. The deformation of bearing surface under pressure or heat of oil film was calculated by compliance matrix method. The compliance matrix was established by finite element analysis. The temperature distributions of oil film and bearing were calculated by energy equation and heat conduction equation.

Findings

When the thermal deformation of bearing and journal surface is considered, the radius clearance affects not only the value of the maximum oil film pressure and minimum oil film thickness, but also the distribution of oil film pressure and thickness of misaligned bearing. The effect of thermal deformation of bearing on the performance of misaligned bearing is larger than that of elastic deformation of bearing. Whether or not the surface roughness affects the performance of misaligned bearing and the affecting level depends greatly on the condition of deformation of bearing surface.

Originality/value

The surface roughness, thermal effect and (thermal and elastic) deformation of bearing surface were considered simultaneously in the thermoelastohydrodynamic lubrication analysis of bearing with journal misalignment caused by shaft deformation under load. The results of this paper are helpful to the design of the bearing.

Abstract

Purpose

Under the action of many factors, the shaft of the shaft-journal bearing system inevitably moves along the axis direction at work, which will lead to the axial movement of journal in the bearing. However, at present, only the dynamic and squeezing effects caused by the relative rotation and squeezing motion between the journal and the bearing surfaces are considered in the lubrication analysis of misaligned journal bearing and the axial movement of journal in the actual use of bearing is not considered. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the lubrication of journal bearing considering the axial movement of journal.

Design/methodology/approach

Taking the shaft-journal bearing system as the research object, a hydrodynamic lubrication model of journal bearing is established considering the axial movement and misalignment of journal. The finite difference method is used to solve the Reynolds equation for the lubrication analysis.

Findings

The axial movement of journal has a significant influence on the lubrication characteristics of misaligned journal bearing. The larger the misalignment angles of journal or the eccentricity of bearing, the greater the influence of the axial movement of journal on the lubrication performance of bearing. The lower the speed of bearing or the smaller the clearance of bearing, the more significant the influence of the axial movement of journal on the lubrication performance of bearing is.

Originality/value

The influence of the axial movement of journal on the lubrication performance of journal bearing is studied under different misalignment angles of journal, working conditions and clearances of bearing. The results of this paper are helpful to the design and research of the lubrication performance of journal bearing.

Abstract

This paper gives a review of the finite element techniques (FE) applied in the analysis and design of machine elements; bolts and screws, belts and chains, springs and dampers, brakes, gears, bearings, gaskets and seals are handled. The range of applications of finite elements on these subjects is extremely wide and cannot be presented in a single paper; therefore the aim of this paper is to give FE researchers/users only an encyclopaedic view of the different possibilities that exist today in the various fields mentioned above. An Appendix included at the end of the paper presents a bibliography on finite element applications in the analysis/design of machine elements for 1977‐1997.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to use a combination of numerical simulation and experiment to evaluate the performance of laser surface texturing (LST) in the field of gear lubrication, and to more accurately predict the lubrication characteristics of different surfaces.

Design/methodology/approach

The method used in this paper is developed on the basis of the deterministic solution of the three-dimensional (3D) mixed elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) model and the model parameters are corrected by friction test. The film pressure, film thickness and friction coefficient of different micro-textured tooth surfaces are predicted on the basis of accurate 3D mixed EHL models.

Findings

The results demonstrate that the micro-texture structure of the tooth surface can increase the local film thickness and enhance the lubricating performance of the tooth surface without drastically reducing the contact fatigue life. The stress distribution and friction characteristics of the tooth surface can be optimized by adjusting the micro-texture arrangement and the size of the micro-textures.

Originality/value

A new evaluation method using a 3D hybrid EHL model and friction test to predict the lubrication characteristics of LST is proposed, which can effectively improve the processing economy and save time.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper proposes the lubrication characteristics of the worn slipper in the slipper–swashplate pair. The mathematical analysis of lubrication characteristics of slipper with the measured surface roughness distribution is introduced. Based on the results from the test rig, it carries out the result compassion in different operating conditions.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces the measured surface roughness distribution of new and used slippers and generates the oil film thickness distribution with it. An average flow Reynolds equation of the pressure distribution is introduced too. The experimental results are carried out on a novel adjustable oil film thickness test rig.

Findings

The surface roughness of the worn slipper enlarges the reacting force and torque only if the oil film thickness is small. When the ratio of oil film thickness to the root mean square of surface roughness is much smaller than 3, the influence of it on torque is obvious.

Originality/value

Different surface roughness of worn slipper proposed in this paper has an influence on the lubrication characteristics. As the slipper is worn after a period of use, the changed lubrication characteristics should be considered in the slipper design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose an adjustable oil film thickness test rig for detecting lubrication characteristics of the slipper. The mathematical analysis of lubrication is introduced. Based on the results from the test rig, the results comparison from test rig and mathematical analysis is carried out.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces a mechanism which can adjust the oil film thickness between the slipper and swash-plate. Feasibility is ensured, and the accuracy of test rig is guaranteed by the three-coordinate measuring machine. Three displacement sensors show the oil film thickness and its shape. The reacting force and torque resulting from oil film can be achieved by three S-type force sensors and a torque sensor, respectively.

Findings

The relative error of the reacting force is small. The relative error reduces and is acceptable when the deformation of retainer is taken into account. The thickness and tilt angle of oil film have less effect on the reacting force. However, they are significantly impact on torque.

Originality/value

The test rig proposed in this paper is able to adjust the oil film thickness, which is used to detecting the lubrication characteristics in pump design.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to address the influence of diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings on the frictional power loss of spur gears. It shows potentials for friction and bulk temperature reduction in industrial use. From a scientific point of view, the thermal insulation effect on fluid friction is addressed, which lowers viscosity in the gear contact due to increasing contact temperature.

Design/methodology/approach

Thermal insulation effect is analyzed in detail by means of the heat balance and micro thermal network of thermal elastohydrodynamic lubrication contacts. Preliminary results at a twin-disk test rig are summarized to categorize friction and bulk temperature reduction by DLC coatings. Based on experiments at a gear efficiency test rig, the frictional power losses and bulk temperatures of DLC-coated gears are investigated, whereby load, speed, oil temperature and coatings are varied.

Findings

Experimental investigations at the gear efficiency test rig showed friction and bulk temperature reduction for all operating conditions of DLC-coated gears compared to uncoated gears. This effect was most pronounced for high load and high speed. A reduction of the mean gear coefficient of friction on average 25% and maximum 55% was found. A maximum reduction of bulk temperature of 15% was observed.

Practical implications

DLC-coated gears show a high potential for reducing friction and improving load-carrying capacity. However, the industrial implementation is restrained by the limited durability of coatings on gear flanks. Therefore, a further and overall consideration of key durability factors such as substrate material, pretreatment, coating parameters and gear geometry is necessary.

Originality/value

Thermal insulation effect of DLC coatings was shown by theoretical analyses and experimental investigations at model test rigs. Although trial tests on gears were conducted in literature, this study proves the friction reduction by DLC-coated gears for the first time systematically in terms of various operating conditions and coatings.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to analyze the evolution of the lubrication regime by studying the variation of friction coefficient with the rotational speed of the shaft and the impact of the applied load in the starting phase of a cylindrical journal bearing. The paper also aims to ensure that the oil layer is large enough for the rough edges of the outer layer of the bushing and the shaft cannot come into contact. The bearing is made of steel backing material and babbitted (88 per cent tin) on its inner surface.

Design/methodology/approach

A numerical analysis is performed taking into account the thermal effect to better predict the operating performance of a hydrodynamic plain cylindrical journal bearing during the start-up and observe the variation of the heat production in bushing inner surface. The flow is modeled based on the Reynolds equation and discretized using the finite volume method.

Findings

The evolutions of the start-up speeds of the bearing have remarkable influence on friction torque; average temperature and dissipated power increased with increasing speed and increasing load, but the maximum pressure and the eccentricity decreased with the increase of the start-up speed. The friction coefficient, minimum film thickness and attitude angle increase with elevation of start-up speed.

Originality/value

For the start-up speed of 750, 1,000 and 1,800 rpm and an applied load of 1,000 N, the regime of lubrication of the bearing passes the hydrodynamic regime to the mixed regime; therefore, during start-up and under heavy loads, the bearing must move very quickly at these speeds to avoid contact of the inner surface of the bearing and the shaft.

Abstract

Purpose

Water lubrication is significant for its environmental friendliness. Composite journal bearing is liable to deform for the huge pressure of water film. This paper aims to study the influence of elastic deformation on how lubrication functions in water-lubricated journal bearings and to provide references for designing composite journal bearings.

Design/methodology/approach

The combination of computational fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction is adopted in this paper to study the lubrication performance of water-lubricated compliant journal bearings. The influences of elasticity modulus and Poisson’s ratio on load-carrying capacity and elastic deformation are studied for different rotational speeds. Predictions in this work are compared with the published experimental results, and the present work agrees well with the experimental results.

Findings

A reference whether elastic deformation should be considered for composite journal bearings is proposed under different working conditions. Besides, a reference to determine water-lubricated plain journal bearings dimensions under different loads and rotational speeds is developed with the effect of both elastic deformation and cavitation being accounted.

Originality/value

The present research provides references as to whether elastic deformation should be considered in operation and to determine compliant journal bearings’ dimensions in the design process.
