Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize the effects of nonlinear thermal radiation and thermal stratification effects on the flow of three-dimensional Eyring-Powell 36 nm alumina-water nanofluid within the thin boundary layer in the presence of quartic autocatalytic kind of chemical reaction effects, and to unravel the effects of a magnetic field parameter, random motion of the tiny nanoparticles and volume fraction on the flow.
Design/methodology/approach
The chemical reaction between homogeneous (Eyring-Powell 36 nm alumina-water) bulk fluid and heterogeneous (three molecules of the catalyst at the surface) in the flow of magnetohydrodynamic three-dimensional flow is modeled as a quartic autocatalytic kind of chemical reaction. The electromagnetic radiation which occurs within the boundary layer is treated as the nonlinear form due to the fact that Taylor series expansion may not give full details of such effects within the boundary layer. With the aid of appropriate similarity variables, the nonlinear coupled system of partial differential equation which models the flow was reduced to ordinary differential equation boundary value problem.
Findings
A favorable agreement of the present results is obtained by comparing it for a limiting case with the published results; hence, reliable results are presented. The concentration of homogeneous bulk fluid (Eyring-Powell nanofluid) increases and decreases with ϕ and Pr, respectively. The increase in the value of magnetic field parameter causes vertical and horizontal velocities of the flow within the boundary layer to decrease significantly. The decrease in the vertical and horizontal velocities of Eyring-Powell nanofluid flow within the boundary layer is guaranteed due to an increase in the value of M. Concentration of homogeneous fluid increases, while the concentration of the heterogeneous catalyst at the wall decreases with M.
Originality/value
Considering the industrial applications of thermal stratification in solar engineering and polymer processing where the behavior of the flow possesses attributes of Eyring-Powell 36 nm alumina-water, this paper presents the solution of the flow problem considering 36 nm alumina nanoparticles, thermophoresis, stratification of thermal energy, Brownian motion and nonlinear thermal radiation. In addition, the aim and objectives of this paper fill such vacuum in the industry.

Abstract
Purpose
Thermal and species transport of magneto hydrodynamic Casson liquid over a stretched surface is investigated theoretically in this examination for the three-dimensional boundary layer flow of a yield exhibiting material. The phenomenon of heat and species relocation is based upon modified Fourier and Fick’s laws that involves the relaxation times for the transportation of heat and mass. Conservation laws are modeled under boundary layer analysis in the Cartesian coordinates system. The purpose of this paper is to find the influence of different emerging parameters on fluid velocity, temperature and transport of species.
Design/methodology/approach
Reconstructed nonlinear boundary layer ordinary differential equations are analyzed through eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Due to the complexity and non-existence of the exact solution of the transformed equations, a convergent series solution by the homotopy algorithm is also derived. The reliability of the applied scheme is presented by comparing the obtained results with the previous findings.
Findings
Physical quantities of interest are displayed through graphs and tables and discussed for sundry variables. It is discerned that higher magnetic influence slows down fluid motion, whereas concentration and temperature profiles upsurge. Reliability of the recommended scheme is monitored by comparing the obtained results for the dimensionless stress as a limiting case of previous findings and an excellent agreement is observed. Higher values of Schmidt number reduce the concentration profile, whereas mounting the values of Prandtl number reduces the dimensionless temperature field. Moreover, heat and species transfer rates increase by mounting the values of thermal and concentration relaxation times.
Originality/value
The phenomenon of heat and species relocation is based upon modified Fourier and Fick’s laws which involves the relaxation times for the transportation of heat and mass. Conservation laws are modeled under boundary layer analysis in the Cartesian coordinates system.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the stability of a suspension containing both gyrotactic and oxytactic microorganisms for the case when the suspension occupies a horizontal layer of finite depth. The lower boundary of the layer is assumed rigid while at the upper boundary both situations of rigid and stress‐free boundary conditions are considered.
Design/methodology/approach
Linear instability analysis is utilized, and the obtained eigenvalue problem is solved analytically using a one‐term Galerkin method.
Findings
The obtained eigenvalue equation relates three Rayleigh numbers, the traditional thermal Rayleigh number and two bioconvection Rayleigh numbers, for gyrotactic and oxytactic microorganisms.
Research limitations/implications
Only the case of non‐oscillatory instability (which always occurs when heating from the bottom is considered) is analyzed. Further experimental research is needed to elucidate possible interaction between gyrotactic and oxytactic microorganisms. The developed theory is applicable only for dilute suspensions.
Originality/value
This paper extends the traditional theory of bio‐thermal convection to the case when the suspension contains two types of motile microorganisms exhibiting different behaviors.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this study is to present the significance of Joule heating, viscous dissipation, magnetic field and slip condition on the boundary layer flow of an electrically conducting Boussinesq couple-stress fluid induced by an exponentially stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium under the effect of the magnetic field of the variable kind. The heat transfer phenomenon is accounted for under thermal radiation, Joule and viscous dissipation effects.
Design/methodology/approach
The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed to the nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by using some appropriate dimensionless variables and then the consequential nonlinear ODEs are solved numerically by making the use of the well-known shooting iteration technique along with the standard fourth-order Runge–Kutta integration scheme. The impact of emerging flow parameters on velocity and temperature profiles, streamlines, local skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number are described comprehensively through graphs and tables.
Findings
Results reveal that the velocity profile is observed to diminish considerably within the boundary layer in the presence of a magnetic field and slip condition. The enhanced radiation parameter is to decline the temperature field. The slip effect is favorable for fluid flow.
Originality/value
Till now, slip effect on Boussinesq couple-stress fluid over an exponentially stretching sheet embedded in a porous medium has not been explored. The present results are validated with the previously published study and found to be highly satisfactory.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to analyze the combined effects of thermal radiation and activation energy with a chemical reaction on the quadratic convective flow of a micropolar fluid over an inclined plate. Convective thermal boundary condition and suction/injection effects are considered at the surface of an inclined plate.
Design/methodology/approach
The convection along with nonlinear Boussinesq approximation (i.e. quadratic convection or nonlinear convection) and usual boundary layer assumptions is employed in the mathematical formulation. Highly coupled nonlinear governing equations are tackled by a combined local non-similarity and successive linearization techniques.
Findings
The behavior of various pertinent parameters on the fluid flow characteristics is conferred through graphs and it reveals that the qualitative behaviors of velocity, temperature, skin friction and heat transfer rates of a micropolar fluid are similar for Biot number and radiation parameters. The suction/injection and activation energy parameters increase the concentration of the micropolar fluid within the boundary layer, while the chemical reaction parameter reduces the concentration in the same region. Further, this quadratic convection shows a strong influence on the fluid flow characteristics and then the impact of pertinent parameters is more prominent on the physical quantities, compared therewith results of the linear convection.
Practical implications
This kind of investigation is useful in the mechanism of combustion, aerosol technology, high-temperature polymeric mixtures and solar collectors which are operated at moderate to very high temperatures.
Originality/value
This attempt is a unique contribution to the establishment of both micropolar fluid and activation energy. This kind of study even in the absence of quadratic convection is not yet noted.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to perform an analytical approximation for the flow of magnetohydrodynamic Carreau fluid with the association of nanoparticles over a rotating disk. The disk is moving with a constant uniform speed. Governing equations are obtained by using these assumptions in the form of partial differential equations with boundary conditions. These coupled, highly nonlinear equations are transformed into a coupled system of ordinary differential equations by engaging similarity transformation in the rotating frame of reference.
Design/methodology/approach
An efficient and reliable scheme, namely optimal homotopy asymptotic method, is used to obtain the solutions of the arising physical problem, which is further analyzed graphically. After computing the solutions of the arising problem, plots of velocities, temperature and concentration are discussed briefly.
Findings
It has been observed that dimensionless velocity reduced due to magnetic effect between the boundary layer and escalating values of the magnetic parameter upsurges the temperature and concentration profiles. Contour plots and numerical results are given for local numbers like skin friction coefficient, Nusselt number and Sherwood number.
Originality/value
The work presented in this manuscript is neither published nor submitted anywhere for the consideration/publications. It is a novel work.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to report the impact of thermophoresis and Brownian moment on MHD two-dimensional forced convection flow of nanofluid past a permeable stretching sheet in the presence of thermal diffusion.
Design/methodology/approach
The flow governing PDEs are reduced to ODEs by utilizing pertinent transmutations and then resolved by employing a fourth-order Runge-Kutta-based shooting technique. The energy and diffusion equations are incorporated with Brownian motion, thermophoresis and Soret parameters. The velocity, thermal and concentration attributes along with skin friction factor, local Nusselt and Sherwood number are discussed under the influence of sundry pertinent parameters and presented with the assistance of graphical and tabular values.
Findings
The results infer that Sherwood number is accelerated by Soret parameter but it controls the thermal transport rate. And also, Brownian and thermophoresis play a vital role in enhancing heat conduction process.
Originality/value
Considering the industrial applications of flow of magnetic nanofluid over a stretching surface, this paper presents the solution of the flow problem considering thermophoresis, Brownian motion, magnetic field and thermal diffusion effects. In addition, the aim and objectives of this paper fills a gap in the industry.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of thermal destratification facing engineers and scientists during the motion of fluids which consist of rigid and randomly oriented particles suspended in a viscous medium under the influence of Lorentz force. This paper provides an insight into the non-linear transfer of thermal radiation within the boundary layer.
Design/methodology/approach
Similarity transformation and parameterization of the non-linear partial differential equation are carried out. The approximate analytical solution of the governing equation which models the free convective flow of strong and weak concentration of micro-elements in a micropolar fluid over a vertical surface is presented.
Findings
It is observed that the velocity and temperature distribution are decreasing properties of thermal stratification parameter St. Maximum local skin friction coefficients are ascertained at an epilimnion level (St=0) when the magnitude of thermal radiation is small. Thermal stratification parameter has no significant effect on the temperature distribution in the flow near a free stream.
Originality/value
The relationship between stratification of temperature and the transfer of thermal energy during the problem of thermal destratification facing engineers and scientist during the motion of fluids which consist of rigid and randomly oriented particles suspended in a viscous medium under the influence of Lorentz force is unravelled in this paper.
