Abstract

Purpose

In an era when engagement in public spaces and places is increasingly regulated and constrained, we argue for the use of literary analytic tools to enable younger generations to critically examine and reenvision everyday spatialities (Rogers, 2016; Rogers et al., 2015). The purpose of this paper is to consider how spatial analyses of contemporary young adult literature enrich interrogations of the spaces and places youth must navigate, and the consequences of participation for different bodies across those spheres.

Design/methodology/approach

In a graduate seminar of teachers and writers, we examined literary texts through a combined framework of feminist cultural geography, mobilities and critical mobilities studies. In this paper, we interweave our own spatial analyses of two selected works of young adult fiction with the reflections of our graduate student participants to explore our spatial framework and its potential to enhance critical approaches to literature instruction.

Findings

We argue that spatial literary analysis may equip teachers and students with tools to critically examine the spaces and places of everyday life and creatively reenvision what it means to be an engaged citizen in uncertain and troubling times.

Originality/value

While we have engaged in this work for several years, we found that in light of the global pandemic, coupled with the recent antiracist demonstrations, a spatial approach to literary study emerges as a potentially even more relevant and powerful component of literature instruction.

Abstract

Purpose

Nurse managers’ planning practices are essential to the practice of management in the unit, and the overall efficiency of the healthcare service delivery. This study aims to explore the planning practices of nurse managers in the Greater Accra Region, Ghana.

Design/methodology/approach

A descriptive phenomenological design was employed to explore nurse managers' planning practices. In total, 15 nurse managers and 47 nurses from 19 primary and secondary hospitals of the Ghana Health Service and two specialized hospitals in the Greater Accra Region, Ghana, were involved in the study. Data were collected using semi-structured interview guides and probes.

Findings

The findings suggested that plans were widely common to all the units of the hospitals and were considered satisfactory by nurse managers. However, most of these plans were not effectively utilized. Nurse managers had only fair knowledge about the planning process and were moderately involved and communicated ideas to colleagues in the process. Furthermore, nurse managers do not frequently share the vision neither do they even communicate expectations to achieve unit goals and objectives with subordinates.

Originality/value

The research emphasizes the relevance of planning in healthcare management. It highlights the management practice of planning in the context of nurse managers and accentuates the values the healthcare system derives with effective planning practices.

Abstract

The following annotated bibliography of materials on orienting users to the library and on instructing them in the use of reference and other resources covers publications from 1979. A few items from 1978 were included because information about them had not been available in time for the 1978 listing. Some entries were not annotated because the compiler was unable to secure a copy of the item. The bibliography includes publications on user instruction in all types of libraries and for all types of users from children to adults. To facilitate the use of the list, it has been divided into categories by type of library. Even though the library literature includes many citations to items on user instruction in foreign countries, this bibliography includes only publications in the English language.

Abstract

Purpose

Since its inception, the internet has become increasingly dominant in everyday life. Despite its obvious benefits, concerns have been raised as to potential risks of the internet such as susceptibility to being a victim of crime and bullying. For individuals with a learning or developmental disability this risk is increased given their lack of intellectual functioning and social awareness. For individuals with such a disability and a forensic background, the risks may be even greater given the added possibility of offending online. The purpose of this paper is to describe the development of an internet risk awareness group for such individuals.

Design/methodology/approach

The internet awareness group comprises of ten sessions run on a weekly basis for individuals with a learning/developmental disability and forensic background. The aim of the group is to aid an understanding of the benefits and risks of the internet, including things to be aware of to enable service users to make an informed choice and to minimise their chance of being the victim of any crime or distress. The sessions also have a forensic focus and will outline legal aspects of the internet in relation to behaviours such as stalking and will teach service users about the consequence of this.

Findings

The paper describes the process of developing the course material, providing the course and adapting it in light of feedback from participants.

Originality/value

The paper highlights the emerging nature of problematic internet use amongst learning disabled offenders. It serves to raise awareness among health and social care professionals and instigate the development of further good practice.
