Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze raw materials, labor, capital, demand, related industries, strategies and policies influencing international competitiveness of Chinese textile and clothing industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is conducted using “Diamond Model”, in which raw materials, labor, capital, demand, related industries, strategies and policies are included as explanatory variables, and the impacts of international competitiveness on market share (MS), trade competitiveness(TC) and revealed comparative advantage(RCA) are examined based on the estimated coefficients of these variables.

Findings

These factors have different effects on TC, MS and RCA. While their effects on TC and MS are similar in sign even though their degree of significance differs, their effects on RCA are opposite to TC and MS except for capital. Raw materials and capital have negative effects on TC and MS, while the other factors have positive ones. Raw materials have positive effects on RCA, but all other factors have negative ones.

Practical/implications

The results from this study imply that it is necessary to increase investment in fixed assets of Chinese textile and clothing industry, speed up the pace of upgrading equipment, improve the level of industrialization, while strengthening the supply of textile raw materials, and lowering raw material prices, thereby reducing the cost of textile and clothing enterprises.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first empirical research made using econometric model about the impact of the main factors of trade competitiveness in Chinese textile and clothing industry based on the “Diamond Model”.

Abstract

Purpose

Enterprises face the wrath of the government for taking part in environmental conservation and adoption of sustainable initiatives along with customer demands. Therefore, enterprises are forced to adopt sustainable supply chain practices (SSCPs), which leads to competitive advantage. Now, sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) is a management process that promotes the adoption of eco-friendly activities in conventional supply chains (SCs). Enterprises in India are under tremendous pressure to include SSCPs into their conventional SCs. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the barriers for the implementation of SSCPs into Indian Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Design/methodology/approach

This study aims to identify critical barriers for adoption of SSCPs in the textile MSME SCs located in Eastern India, Odisha with the help of interpretive structural modeling (ISM).

Findings

The paper develops a framework for the evaluation of barriers to the adoption of SSCP in the textile SC. This paper also provides appropriate suggestive measures to deal with the barriers and overcome the same to attain a sustainable textile SC.

Research limitations/implications

Opportunities exist for extension of this research on wider geographical area. In addition to this, some other quantitative modeling approaches can be applied, like analytical hierarchy process, to prioritize the barriers.

Practical implications

The framework offers help to SC managers in their decision-making process by enabling them to analyze the barriers and ways to overcome them.

Originality/value

The paper deals with a particular geographical area where such kinds of studies are rare. The proposed framework provides a foundation for further research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to profile the socio‐economy of an internationally competitive textile industry cluster of small and medium‐sized enterprises in the Faisalabad region of Pakistan and present how the agglomeration has helped the small enterprises to overcome growth constraints and supported them to compete nationally and abroad.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper is based on secondary data, semi‐structured interviews, and questionnaire survey including 267 enterprises. Top managers of small, medium, and large sized enterprises answered the questions. Mixed methods of inquiry and concurrent triangulation approach is used to corroborate and analyze the data.

Findings

The paper presents how the agglomeration has allowed the constituent small and medium sized firms to benefit from various forms of market and nonmarket spillovers, which, in turn, has raised local endogenous innovation and productivity growth.

Originality/value

The paper presents significant new insights for policy makers, practitioners, educators, and researchers into the socio‐economy of agglomerated small and medium sized firms in the context of an emerging economy.

Abstract

Examines the tenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Technology may produce disruptive changes and market turbulence in any industry. Organizational inertia becomes relevant as a factor that adversely affects organizational transformation; this study aims to examine how to overcome it and its consequences to firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The model estimation with seemingly unrelated regression and two-stage least square. The authors build a data set of years 2015–2019 from the Lima Stock Exchange firms to test the hypotheses.

Findings

In this research, using the evolutionary-ecological theory of Hannan and Freeman, the study shows the consequences of organizational inertia on marketing intensity and subsequently on firms' financial results.

Originality/value

This study presents an inter-functional model that links organizational behavior, marketing and finance functions, through the marketing value chain to overcome organizational inertia and create firm value.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a hybrid risk management model, focusing on identification and evaluation of potential risk scenarios in industry/enterprise level, which assists in preventing negative impacts from adverse risks.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed hybrid risk management model embraces the concept of hierarchical holographic modelling (HHM), enterprise‐wise risk management (ERM) and risk filtering, ranking, and management (RFRM) that could be applied in real commercial settings. A case study is conducted in order to validate this comprehensive theoretical model.

Findings

This study shows the potential risks that may be faced by the textile industry in Hong Kong. Corresponding responses are suggested for the risks in different levels, which provide a systematic approach in managing the risks.

Research limitations/implications

The use of a single case study may limit the generalizability of the findings.

Practical implications

The risks suffered by the textile industry are identified through the case study, which provide an insight for better planning and preparation, so as to gain a better chance of success than that of competitors.

Originality/value

The proposed model does not only provide theoretical merits to the literature but can also be applied to different industries for risk management practices.

Abstract

Purpose

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread disruptions to global industries, with the textile sector in South Asia being particularly hard hit. While previous studies have focused on the performance of textile sectors in individual countries, there is a gap in the literature on the comparative impact of the pandemic on the textile industry in South Asian nations. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the performance of the textile sector in South Asian countries and identifying best practices for overcoming the pandemic’s adverse effects.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a comparative approach, this study analyzes the impact of COVID-19 on the performance of the textile sector in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

Findings

Our findings reveal that COVID-19 significantly negatively impacts the textile industry in Pakistan and India. However, Bangladesh has shown effective practices to support the textile industry and mitigate the pandemic’s adverse effects.

Practical implications

The findings of this study hold considerable implications for legislators, leaders, investors and supply chain management professionals operating within the South Asian textile sector. This research has the potential to inform policymakers in formulating strategies to facilitate the textile sector’s resilience during emergencies like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Originality/value

This paper provides significant theoretical additions to the current body of literature regarding the impact of COVID-19 on the textile sector in South Asia. The research uses the global value chain (GVC) theory as a theoretical framework to enhance understanding of the impact of global supply chains and interdependencies on the textile sector in the region.

Abstract

Environmental legislation and its enforcement has undoubtedly forced the textile industry to be rather cautious in selecting the appropriate processes and equipment. The most efficient, economic and minimal environmental pollution processing methods will be increasingly demanded throughout the 1990s. However, the majority of the textile industry consists of small and medium enterprises, where the lack of expertise on the use of best available techniques leads to levels of operation far away from the optimal. An expert system for a priori economic evaluation of potential interventions in the textile manufacturing processes and equipment is necessary to support decision making in the management level. This paper presents such an expert system, designed and implemented in four stages: formal description of the key factors that affect the dyeing process in the textile industry, development of models for the representation of relevant information, development of models for the representation of knowledge and integration of the above‐mentioned models in a unified information system that supports the decision‐making process in the management of textile enterprises.
