Abstract

Purpose

Auditors’ skills and knowledge of data analytics and big data can influence their judgment at the audit planning stage. At this stage, the auditor will determine the level of audit risk and estimate how long the audit will take. This study aims to test whether big data and data analytics affect auditors’ judgment by adopting the cognitive fit theory.

Design/methodology/approach

This was an experimental study involving 109 accounting students as participants. The 2 × 2 factorial design between subjects in a laboratory setting was applied to test the hypothesis.

Findings

First, this study supports the proposed hypothesis that participants who are provided with visual analytics information will rate audit risk lower than text analytics. Second, participants who receive information on unstructured data types will assess audit risk (audit hours) higher (longer) than those receiving structured data types. In addition, those who receive information from visual analytics results have a higher level of reliance than those receiving text analytics.

Practical implications

This research has implications for external and internal auditors to improve their skills and knowledge of data analytics and big data to make better judgments, especially when the auditor is planning the audit.

Originality/value

Previous studies have examined the effect of data analytics (predictive vs anomaly) and big data (financial vs non-financial) on auditor judgment, whereas this study examined data analytics (visual vs text analytics) and big data (structured and unstructured), which were not tested in previous studies.

Abstract

Purpose

Although knowledge based on business intelligence (BI) is crucial, few studies have explored the core of BI knowledge; this study explores this topic.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collected 1,306 articles and 54,020 references from the Web of Science (WoS) database and performed co-citation analysis to explore the core knowledge of BI; 52 highly cited articles were identified. The authors also performed factor and cluster analyses to organize this core knowledge and compared the results of these analyses.

Findings

The factor analysis based on the co-citation matrix revealed seven key factors of the core knowledge of BI: big data analytics, BI benefits and success, organizational capabilities and performance, information technology (IT) acceptance and measurement, information and business analytics, social media text analytics, and the development of BI. The cluster analysis revealed six categories: IT acceptance and measurement, BI success and measurement, organizational capabilities and performance, big data-enabled business value, social media text analytics, and BI system (BIS) and analytics. These results suggest that numerous research topics related to big data are emerging.

Research limitations/implications

The core knowledge of BI revealed in this study can help researchers understand BI, save time, and explore new problems. The study has three limitations that researchers should consider: the time lag of co-citation analysis, the difference between two analytical methods, and the changing nature of research over time. Researchers should consider these limitations in future studies.

Originality/value

This study systematically explores the extent to which scholars of business have researched and understand BI. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is one of the first studies to outline the core knowledge of BI and identify emerging opportunities for research in the field.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to understand and a lay a foundation of how analytics has been used in depression management, this study conducts a systematic literature review using two techniques – text mining and manual review. The proposed methodology would aid researchers in identifying key concepts and research gaps, which in turn, will help them to establish the theoretical background supporting their empirical research objective.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper explores a hybrid methodology for literature review (HMLR), using text mining prior to systematic manual review.

Findings

The proposed rapid methodology is an effective tool to automate and speed up the process required to identify key and emerging concepts and research gaps in any specific research domain while conducting a systematic literature review. It assists in populating a research knowledge graph that does not reach all semantic depths of the examined domain yet provides some science-specific structure.

Originality/value

This study presents a new methodology for conducting a literature review for empirical research articles. This study has explored an “HMLR” that combines text mining and manual systematic literature review. Depending on the purpose of the research, these two techniques can be used in tandem to undertake a comprehensive literature review, by combining pieces of complex textual data together and revealing areas where research might be lacking.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to promote the need for advanced skills acquisition within the LIS and academic libraries. This study focuses on the importance of library management systems and the need for the graduates to be equipped with analytics skills. Combined with basic data, text mining and analytics, knowledge classification and information audit skills would benefit libraries and improve resource allocation. Agile institutional libraries in this big data era success hinge on the ability to perform depth analytics of both data and text to generate useful insight for information literacy training and information governance.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper adopted a living-lab methodology to use existing technology to conduct system analysis and LMS audit of an academic library of one of the highly ranked universities in the world. One of the benefits of this approach is the ability to apply technological innovation and tools to carry out research that is relevant to the context of LIS or other research fields such as management, education, humanities and social sciences. The techniques allow us to gain access to publicly available information because of system audits that were performed. The level of responsiveness of the online library was accessed, and basic information audits were conducted.

Findings

This study indicated skill gaps in the LIS training and the academic libraries in response to the fourth industrial technologies. This study argued that the role of skill acquisition and how it can foster data-driven library management operations. Hence, data mining, text mining and analytics are needed to probe into such massive, big data housed in the various libraries’ repositories. This study, however, indicated that without retraining of librarians or including this analytics programming in the LIS curriculum, the libraries would not be able to reap the benefits these techniques provided.

Research limitations/implications

This paper covered research within the general and academic libraries and the broader LIS fields. The same principle and concept is very important for both public and private libraries with substantial usage and patrons.

Practical implications

This paper indicated that librarianship training must fill the gaps within the LIS training. This can be done by including data mining, data analytics, text mining and processing in the curriculum. This skill will enable the news graduates to have skills to assist the library managers in making informed decisions based on user-generated content (UGC), LMS system audits and information audits. Thus, this paper provided practical insights and suggested solutions for academic libraries to improve the agility of information services.

Social implications

The academic librarian can improve institutional and LMS management through insights that are generated from the user. This study indicated that libraries' UGC could serve as robust insights into library management.

Originality/value

This paper argued that the librarian expertise transcends information literacy and knowledge classification and debated the interwoven of LMS and data analytics, text mining and analysis as a solution to improve efficient resources and training.

Abstract

Purpose

Organizations widely adopt knowledge management (KM) to develop and promote technologies and improve business effectiveness. Analytics can aid in KM, further augmenting company performance and decision-making. There has been significant research in the domain of analytics in KM in the past decade. Therefore, this paper aims to examine the current body of literature on the adoption of analytics in KM by offering prominent themes and laying out a research path for future research endeavors in the field of KM analytics.

Design/methodology/approach

A comprehensive analysis was conducted on a collection of 123 articles sourced from the Scopus database. The research has used a Latent Dirichlet Allocation methodology for topic modeling and content analysis to discover prominent themes in the literature.

Findings

The KM analytics literature is categorized into three clusters of research – KM analytics for optimizing business processes, KM analytics in the industrial context and KM analytics and social media.

Originality/value

Systematizing the literature on KM and analytics has received very minimal attention. The KM analytics view has been examined using complementary topic modeling techniques, including machine-based algorithms, to enable a more reliable, systematic, thorough and objective mapping of this developing field of research.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims at two objectives, i.e. first, to identify the core elements of the Islamic fintech ecosystem, and second, to use the identified core elements to analyse the development of such an ecosystem in Indonesia.

Design/methodology/approach

This work combines data analytics of text mining with qualitative analysis of human intelligence in two steps. First, knowledge discovery of the Islamic fintech ecosystem’s core elements using a sample of eight academic articles totalling 102 pages and 75,082 words. Second, using the identified core elements from step one to explore such ecosystem development in Indonesia. This stage employs a sample of 11 documents totalling 371 pages and 143,032 words from cyberspace.

Findings

The core elements of the Islamic fintech ecosystem identified are financial customers, fintech startups, government, technology developers, traditional financial institutions and fatwa (Islamic legal opinion). Furthermore, the development of the Islamic fintech ecosystem in Indonesia is examined under these identified core elements, providing critical insights into the Islamic fintech ecosystem currently established in the country's industry.

Research limitations/implications

This study primarily used semi-structured data from cyberspace. Traditional approaches to qualitative data collection, e.g. focused group discussions and interviews, may be beneficial for future studies in addressing the Islamic fintech ecosystem issues.

Practical implications

Academia worldwide may benefit from this work in incorporating knowledge of Islamic fintech ecosystem’s core elements into Islamic finance literature. Specifically, fintech stakeholders in Indonesia may be advantaged to understand how far the Islamic fintech ecosystem has grown in the country.

Social implications

The rise of unethical fintech peer-to-peer lending shows social problems in Indonesia’s fintech industry. The finding derives social implications that elucidate the current state of the country’s Islamic fintech ecosystem.

Originality/value

Using a kind of big data (i.e. semi-structured text data) from cyberspace and applying steps of text mining combined with qualitative analysis, may contribute to the creation of novelties for qualitative research on financial issues.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to demonstrate the value of using social media to capture fashion trends, including the popularity of specific features of clothing, in order to improve the speed and accuracy of supply chain response in the era of fast fashion.

Design/methodology/approach

This study examines the role that text mining can play to improve trend recognition in the fashion industry. Researchers used n-gram analysis to design a social media trend detection tool referred to here as the Twitter Trend Tool (3Ts). This tool was applied to a Twitter dataset to identify trends whose validity was then checked against Google Trends.

Findings

The results suggest that Twitter data are trend representative and can be used to identify the apparel features that are most in demand in near real time.

Originality/value

The 3Ts introduced in this research contributes to the field of fashion analytics by offering a novel method for employing big data from social media to identify consumer preferences in fashion elements and analyzes consumer preferences to improve demand planning.

Practical implications

The 3Ts improves forecasting models and helps inform marketing campaigns in the apparel retail industry, especially in fast fashion.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and fake news detection. It also intended to explore the negative effects of fake news on society and to find out trending techniques for fake news detection.

Design/methodology/approach

“Preferred Reporting Items for the Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis” were applied as a research methodology for conducting the study. Twenty-five peer-reviewed, most relevant core studies were included to carry out a systematic literature review.

Findings

Findings illustrated that AI has a strong positive relationship with the detection of fake news. The study displayed that fake news caused emotional problems, threats to important institutions of the state and a bad impact on culture. Results of the study also revealed that big data analytics, fact-checking websites, automatic detection tools and digital literacy proved fruitful in identifying fake news.

Originality/value

The study offers theoretical implications for the researchers to further explore the area of AI in relation to fake news detection. It also provides managerial implications for educationists, IT experts and policymakers. This study is an important benchmark to control the generation and dissemination of fake news on social media platforms.

Purpose

This research explores project manager (PM) behavior in their professional virtual communities (PVCs), using social identity theory as a theoretical foundation. The purpose is to examine the extent to which PMs seek information on key topics in the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide (PMBoK).

Design/methodology/approach

A text data analytics methodology that uses quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques is followed. The research method reveals relationships in language-based data gathered from six project management forums and blogs.

Findings

Information related to all the PMBoK topics is sought in the project management virtual communities. People management topics account for a dominant portion of interactions. The findings enhance social identification theorizing for the PM role. From a practical standpoint, the findings shed light on focal areas for greater emphasis in PM PVCs.

Originality/value

Our people management finding constructively replicates existing findings via a large, global sample and strengthens calls for increased focus on people management matters in project management. As a result, we call for increased scholarly attention to people management in project management. Finally, we encourage pursuit of several research questions to enhance knowledge of PM information-seeking behavior.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a research model with eight constructs, i.e. BDA leadership, BDA talent quality, BDA security quality, BDA privacy quality, innovation, financial performance, market performance and customer satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

The research model focuses on whether (1) Big Data Analytics (BDA) leadership influences BDA talent quality, (2) BDA talent quality influences BDA security quality, (3) BDA talent quality influences BDA privacy quality, (4) BDA talent quality influences Innovation and (5) innovation influences a firm's performance (financial, market and customer satisfaction). An instrument was designed and administered electronically to a diverse set of employees (N = 188) in various organizations in the USA. Collected data were analyzed through a partial least square structural equation modeling.

Findings

Results showed that leadership significantly and positively affects BDA talent quality, which, in turn, significantly and positively impacts security quality, privacy quality and innovation. Moreover, innovation significantly and positively impacts firm performance. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed. Recommendations for future research are provided.

Originality/value

The study provides empirical evidence that leadership significantly and positively impacts BDA talent quality. BDA talent quality, in turn, positively impacts security quality, privacy quality and innovation. This is important, as these are all critical factors for organizations that collect and use big data. Finally, the study demonstrates that innovation significantly and positively impacts financial performance, market performance and customer satisfaction. The originality of the research results makes them a valuable addition to the literature on big data analytics. They provide new insights into the factors that drive organizational success in this rapidly evolving field.
