Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the physical properties of smart aromatherapic ramie/cotton terry fabrics containing microcapsules (MC) with essential Eucalyptus oil.

Design/methodology/approach

Terry fabrics are manufactured by changing the weft density. The air permeability is determined for grey and microencapsulated textile. The factorial designs are made. For informative experiment the linear type of regression is analysed. Development of physical properties of microencapsulated terry fabrics is discussed.

Findings

The air permeability of aromatherapic terry fabrics is determined. All statistical analysis is performed. Appropriate conclusions about the influence of fabric’s structure and microencapsulating process on terry fabric quality are made.

Originality/value

To date there are no investigations concerning terry textiles with fragrance MC. This study developed analysis and empiric mathematical equations suitable for evaluating and designing terry fabrics with the air permeability required. Assessment of the influence of fabric’s weft density and binder concentration for the air permeability of terry textile is proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a 3D geometric model of three-pick terry fabric considering the actual design and structural features of the finished terry fabric.

Design/methodology/approach

The model has been developed using SolidWorks CAD system and the output file can be easily simulated in the ANSYS. Dimensions are acquired from the actual terry fabric measurement.

Findings

A 3D computational model – to be used for understanding the behaviour of terry fabric during actual use through the simulation in ANSYS.

Practical implications

Provides the way to study the yarn and fabric structure behaviour during use through simulation.

Originality/value

The research resulted a 3D geometrical model of very complex three-pick terry fabric for very first time for further analysis of terry fabric behaviour during use.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to perform instrumental comparison of hand parameters of knitted fabrics produced from different biodegradable fibres and to analyze peculiarities of hand parameters' extent influenced by fabric structure and chemical softening.

Design/methodology/approach

The hand of five types of different biodegradable fabrics was evaluated. Experiments were performed using a method based on the principle of specimen biaxial punching deformation when a disc‐shaped specimen is extracted through a round nozzle. The Influence of fabric weave (terry and plain jersey) and finishing (padding with the silicone softener “Belfasin SI”) on the fabric hand was investigated.

Findings

Investigations have shown that weave type and finishing significantly influenced fabric hand properties. It was also stated that even tenuous differences between fabric parameters could be obtained by one numeral value of complex hand rate Q.

Practical implications

Experiments have shown that KTU–Griff–Tester is a simple, reliable instrumental device suitable to obtain quantitative information about fabric mechanical properties. Evaluation of finishing influence on a fabric hand could be precisely expressed by one parameter Q.

Originality/value

In the present research quantitative evaluation of new fabrics from biodegradable fibres hand was performed. Comparison between new biodegradable and traditional cotton fabrics has shown that new biodegradable fibres which are generally used for underwear, sportswear and for medical application are characterized by soft hand, as a result a good affinity with skin.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of some structural characteristics of terry fabrics on the rate of sorption.

Design/methodology/approach

Fabrics are produced by changing the weft density and the pile height. An experimental stand for dynamic measurement of water sorption is created. The quantities of water absorbed by the fabric over time are determined. The sorption rates are calculated and discussed.

Findings

The dynamics of the sorption process are assessed through the sorption curves presented. The sorption rates for the main sorption stages, as well the average rate for weft and warp direction, are calculated. Results are statistically worked out applying ANOVA. Appropriate conclusions about the influence of the investigated parameters on sorption process are made.

Originality/value

The originality/value of this paper is: determination of the rates of water sorption for the particular time intervals and the average rates for the entire test period; and assessment of the infuence of the loop height and weft density on the sorption rates.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a 3D geometric model of terry fabric, taking into consideration structural and geometrical characteristics of the fabric and of the yarns: weave, yarn counts, distances between yarns, weavings‐in, etc.

Design/methodology/approach

The structural and geometrical parameters of the fabric and of the yarns are obtained from the pattern by measuring, calculations and through geometric drawings. The model is worked out by means of SolidWorks and is directly compatible for processing using ANSYS. The proposed construction is checked for admission and for matching with the original structure.

Findings

A 3D computational model, which can be used for strength‐deformation simulation and analysis of terry fabrics, has been developed.

Originality/value

The study developed a 3D geometric model of a complex woven structure consisting of an additional pile warp system by means of non‐specialized CAD software. It can be used for strength‐deformation simulation and analysis.

Abstract

The objective of this research paper is to investigate the important factors that contribute to the absorbency characteristics of terry fabric in order to produce highly absorbent terry towels by using suitable raw materials and changing the fabric constructional parameters. Yarns produced from two varieties of cotton (100% J-34 and MCU-5) and their blends with bamboo and poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) with different counts, twist and number of plies are used to prepare terry fabric of varying loop densities, loop lengths and loop shape factors. The water absorption rate and the total amount of water absorbed are measured by a gravimetric absorbency testing system (GATS). It is found that loop density is the most important parameter for water absorption rate followed by loop length and yarn twist. For the total amount of water absorbed, loop density is again the most important parameter followed by yarn twist, loop shape factor and number of ply in the pile yarn. Furthermore, a Box-Behnken statistical design with 3 factors and 3 levels is used to determine the optimum construction parameters to obtain the desired absorbency characteristics of terry towels and also to see the interaction effect of the various factors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of pick density, pile height and pile yarn count (both single- and double-ply yarn) on the colour fastness to crocking, colour fastness to washing, colour fastness to water of woven velour printed terry fabrics. These variables have also been optimized for developing high-quality fabrics.

Design/methodology/approach

Variables were selected on the basis of past research experience and samples were prepared according to the Box–Behnken design of experiments. The samples were tested for colour fastness to crocking, colour fastness to washing and colour fastness to water by following AATCC 8, AATCC 61, 2A and AATCC 107, respectively.

Findings

The colour fastness to crocking, washing and water of woven velour printed terry fabrics increases with the decrease in pile height and pick density. The colour fastness properties of the fabric increase with increase in fineness of the pile yarn count. Woven velour printed terry fabric with 16.25 picks per cm, 3.5 mm pile height and 16 Ne pile yarn will show best colour fastness. Woven velour printed terry fabric (plied pile yarn) with 16.25 picks per cm, 3.5 mm pile height and 2/24 Ne pile yarn will show best colour fastness

Practical implications

Proved a practical approach to control fastness properties of the fabric by changing fabric variables.

Originality/value

Colour fastness properties of woven velour printed terry fabrics have never been reported. The research work gives the better understanding to develop high quality of fabrics by reducing pile height and pick density. This will also reduce the cost of the fabric.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to predict the pull-out force of loop pile of ramie/cotton terry woven fabrics treated with aroma-microcapsules as well as to understand and to interpret the pull-out behaviour developing the mathematical model.

Design/methodology/approach

The displacements and forces associated with pulling a yarn from different structures of fabrics were determined. Regression analysis and factorial designs were performed.

Findings

The yarn pull-out behaviour of terry fabric is highly dependent on the applied treating and demonstrated various extents of variability under the different pulling distances. The character of yarn pull-out is periodic and depends on fabric construction. The difference between the resistance to pile loop extraction for the grey and modified terry fabrics depends on the changed fabric’s structure. The existence of good relation between binder’s concentration and resistance to pile loop extraction of terry fabric was proved.

Practical implications

The study enables to forecast important loop feature for terry aroma-textiles: to be securely held in the place preventing loop pulling.

Originality/value

The assessment of the influence of fabric’s weft density and binder’s concentration for the yarn pull-out of terry aroma-textile was proposed. The research developed analysis and empiric mathematical equations suitable for predicting of displacements and forces related to pulling phenomenon as well as designing new multifunctional terry fabrics with resistance to pile loop extraction required. The received knowledge could enlarge the base of information needful for design of new products for clothing, home textile and healthcare/well-being applications as well.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the resistance to pile loop extraction of terry fabrics regarding the pile height and impact/finishing.

Design/methodology/approach

Fabrics are manufactured by changing the pile height and applying impact/finishing procedures. The resistance to pile loop extraction are determined. The factorial designs are made. For informative experiment the linear type of regression are analysed. Yarn pull-out behaviour in terry fabrics is discussed.

Findings

The dynamics of yarn pull-out process in terry fabrics is estimated through the force-pulling distance curves presented. The resistance to pile loop extraction is determined. All statistical analysis is performed. Appropriate conclusions about the influence of fabrics structure and impact/finishing on yarn pull-out process are made.

Originality/value

The study developed analysis and empiric mathematical equations suitable for evaluating and designing fabrics with the resistance to pile loop extraction ability required. Assessment of the influence of fabric's pile height and impact/finishing on the yarn pull-out is proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to examine the effect of laundering on the softness and smoothness of terry-cloth towels by different washing machine type, washing temperature, drying method and the use of fabric softener, using a newly developed sound spectrum analysis known as Textile Softness Analyzer.

Design/methodology/approach

The experiment was designed to analyze the most significant laundering parameter in the reduction of softness and smoothness of terry cloth during one laundering cycle up to ten cycles by testing samples using TSA machine.

Findings

A front-loading washer had a significant effect on reducing softness and smoothness in comparison to a top-loading machine; line-drying resulted in a higher decrease in softness and smoothness than tumble-drying. Washing temperature showed no significant effect, and the use of softener during washing was able to reduce the negative effect of line-drying on the softness and smoothness of terry cloth.

Originality/value

This paper provided information on the laundering parameters that can maintain the softness and smoothness of terry-cloth towels, and this was examined with sound spectrum analysis to measure softness and smoothness of textiles.
