Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to verify the moderating effects of school category based on the self-determination theory (SDT) in cloud-based virtual learning environment (VLE) acceptance.

Design/methodology/approach

Two phases of national surveys were conducted using a random sampling technique. The research model was tested empirically using 608 samples of primary and secondary school teachers.

Findings

The full model supports significant effects of autonomy, competence, and relatedness on trust, knowledge sharing attitude and behavioral intention except the autonomy-attitude and relatedness-behavioral intention relationships. In primary school, 61, 24.1, 52.1, and 41.1 percent of variances whereas, in secondary school, 57.4, 31.5, 48.6, and 37.5 percent of variances in instructional effectiveness, behavioral intention, knowledge sharing attitude, and trust in VLE website were explained. There are significant moderating effects of category of school in all causal relationships except the autonomy-knowledge sharing attitude relationship.

Practical implications

There are several useful theoretical and practical implications for scholars and practitioners including Ministry of Education, FrogAsia, etc.

Social implications

The findings may enhance education quality for societal change.

Originality/value

Unlike most studies which focused on TAM, UTAUT, etc., this study investigated the effects of SDT on attitude in sharing knowledge, trust in website and instructional effectiveness. Instead of studying gender differences, this study examined the school category differences.

Abstract

Purpose

In the literature of industrial management, the focus is normally given on examining the factors that contribute to product innovation acceptance. The advocates of “pro-innovation bias” assume that consumers are open to new products and are willing to accept an innovative product. However, there is a high failure rate of technological innovations and most of the technological innovations were rejected due to users' resistance. Since the inception of innovation resistance theory (IRT), the number of studies that used IRT has gained much attention from scholars. However, the findings from these studies from various contexts are inconsistent, lack universality, and a clear understanding of technological innovation barriers. The study aims to determine whether the IRT theory is indeed valid and whether IRT is culturally invariant from the Eastern and Western cultures.

Design/methodology/approach

A meta-analysis based on a random-effects model and studies drawn from 24 countries and/or regions with a consolidated sample size of 10,463 was conducted. Cultural invariance was identified based on subgroup analysis. Moderator analysis was performed by applying the weighted linear regression.

Findings

The results reveal that tradition is the strongest barrier followed by the value, risk, image and usage barrier. Interestingly, there is a cultural invariance in IRT from the Eastern and Western cultures. Besides, there are significant moderating effects due to the temporal factor.

Originality/value

The study has contributed useful theoretical and managerial implications in advancing the product innovation literature.

Abstract

Purpose

Cloud computing technology is advancing and expanding at an explosive rate. These advancements have further extended the capabilities of the virtual learning environment (VLE) to provide accessibility anywhere, anytime where educational resources can be saved, modified, retrieved and shared on the cloud. The purpose of this paper is to examine the predictors of instructional effectiveness of cloud computing VLE by extending the Self Determination and Channel Expansion Theory with external constructs of VLE interactivity, content design, school support, trust in website, knowledge sharing attitude and demographic variables.

Design/methodology/approach

Random sampling data were collected in two waves of nation-wide survey and analyzed with artificial neural network approach.

Findings

SDT, CET, content design, interactivity, trust in website, school support and demographics significantly predict instructional effectiveness.

Research limitations/implications

The study has provided a new paradigm shift from investigating the behavioral intention and continuance intention to the effectiveness of an information system. It advocates that quality of research may be improved by adhering to the basic research methodology starting from rigorous instrument development and validation to future research direction.

Practical implications

The research provides implications to Ministry of Education, the VLE content and service providers, scholars and practitioners.

Social implications

The findings of the study may further improve the quality of living of the society when the instructional effectiveness of the cloud-based VLE is further enhanced.

Originality/value

Existing grid computing VLE studies have focussed on the acceptance of students and teachers and not its instructional effectiveness. Unlike existing studies that examined extrinsic motivational factors (e.g. TAM, UTAUT), this study uses intrinsic motivational factors (e.g. relatedness, competence and autonomy) as well as perceived media richness. Malaysia is the first nation to implement the VLE at a national scale and the findings from this study will provide a new insight on the determinants of instructional effectiveness of the VLE system.

Abstract

Purpose

This study examines the antecedents of continuance intention to use mobile payment in the midst of a pandemic. In general, the cognitive-affective-conative (CAC) framework was used as the theoretical base. More specifically, the dynamic interrelationships between the cognitive and affective constructs were derived from a penta-dimensional perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

An online survey yielded 307 responses from youths who were utilizing mobile payment through an online survey which were then analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) and artificial neural network (ANN).

Findings

Both positive and negative affective constructs significantly influence continuance intention and can also serve as mediators to the cognitive variables. Interestingly, price savings and referent network size were revealed to be sources of technostress. In addition, despite not having a significant direct influence, price savings should not be overlooked given its indirect significance on continuance intention.

Originality/value

Based on the CAC framework, the constructs were conceptualized according to the respective dimensions to develop this study's research model. It was then used to examine their influences on the continuance intention to use mobile payment in the midst of a pandemic. Moreover, a few novel hypotheses were proposed, and the findings serve to increase the understanding of this subject matter.

Abstract

Purpose

This research investigates the mechanism by which big data capability enables superior supply chain resilience (SCRe) by empirically examining the links among big data analytics (BDA), supply chain flexibility (SCF) and SCRe, with innovation-focused complementary assets (CA-I) as the moderator.

Design/methodology/approach

Extensive surveys were conducted to gather 308 responses from Malaysian manufacturing firms in order to explore this framework. The structural and measurement models were examined and evaluated by using partial least squares structural equation modelling.

Findings

The findings revealed that BDA is linked to flexibilities in a manufacturing firm’s value chain, which in turn is related to the firm’s SCRe. However, the association between BDA and SCRe is surprisingly non-significant. Additionally, CA-I was discovered to moderate the connections between all of the constructs, except for the relationship between BDA and SCRe. Such findings imply that with the aim of enhancing resilience, a company should concentrate on SCF; and that BDA capability is a prerequisite for increasing these flexibilities.

Originality/value

This research extrapolates the findings of previous studies regarding BDA’s influence on SCRe by investigating the indirect effect of SCF, as well as the moderating influence of CA-I. This research is one of the first few studies to empirically examine the relationships between BDA, SCF and SCRe across manufacturing firms, with CA-I acting as a moderator.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper purports to analyze the relationship between knowledge management (KM) and technological innovation in the Malaysian manufacturing sector. Furthermore, the interrelationships between the KM dimensions will also be investigated.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data from 162 manufacturing firms were obtained. Multiple linear regression and neural network analysis were performed in this study to examine the relationships between KM and technological innovation; as well as the interrelationships between KM practices themselves.

Findings

This research study provides empirical evidence and confirms the results of past researchers that KM practices (i.e. knowledge sharing, knowledge application and knowledge storage) are positively and significantly related to technological innovation (i.e. product and process innovation). Moreover, it is also discovered that the interrelationships between the KM dimensions are positive and significant.

Research limitations/implications

This research implies that when firms understand the significance of KM dimensions, there is a great possibility that the firm will succeed in harvesting the full value of technological innovation. Meanwhile, the result may also serve as a guide to the manufacturing managers to understand the importance of KM in their managerial actions, so that the level of technological innovation in their firms can be greatly enhanced.

Originality/value

Extensive research has not been done in the past to examine the relationship between the KM and technological innovation. Meanwhile, the investigation on the interrelationships between the KM dimensions has also been scarce. Hence, such a research is to be called for. This paper provides the manufacturing practitioners with useful guidelines on the appropriate KM practices to be implemented to ensure the improvement in technological innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to uncover the effects of perceived transaction convenience (PTC) and perceived transaction speed (PTS) on unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) in the context of m-payment.

Design/methodology/approach

A predictive analysis approach was used to examine the PTC and PTS using a two-stage partial least square (PLS) and neural network (NN) analyses.

Findings

The findings reveal that only effort expectancy (EE) and facilitating conditions (FC) were discovered to significantly influence BI. More importantly, PTC was found to have positive significant relationship with EE and performance expectancy (PE). Moreover, PTS also supported the positive relationship with BI and EE.

Practical implications

The findings of the study provided further insights to mobile payment service providers, online banking industry players, and all decision makers and stakeholders involved.

Originality/value

Despite of many attempts devoted to understand m-payment adoption, the effects of PTC and PTS on m-payment are not well understood.

Abstract

Purpose

Organizations are social entities comprising multiple people that are goal-directed and have coordinated activities that are also linked to the external environment. As information technology improves, the organizational performance is also improved and it results in positive changes and development in the organizations. Near field communication (NFC) is one of such technologies that can be implemented and utilized in an organization. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the important variables impacting the adoption of NFC in organizations and propose an applicable model for it.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, to have a successful NFC implementation in organizations and analyze main factors impacting the NFC technology adoption in organizations, a technology acceptance model-based approach is used.

Findings

The findings show that the main variables impacting NFC adoption are ease of use, potential risk, usefulness and cost. The obtained results indicate that the model has adequate and sufficient reliability, convergent validity and discriminant validity.

Originality/value

In this paper, the factors impacting the NFC adoption in organizations are pointed out, and the proposed model is tested on samples gathered from Azerbaijan railway employees and for statistical analysis of questionnaires, the SMART-PLS 2.0 software package is used.
