Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to examine the concept of architectural design communication (ADC) for updating design studio dynamics in architectural education during the Covid-19 pandemic. Within this perspective, the changing and transforming contents of architectural education, the thinking, representation and production mediums are examined through the determined components of ADC. There are five components in the study, which are (1) Effective Language Use, (2) Effective use of Handcrafts, (3) Effective Technical Drawing Knowledge, (4) Effective Architectural Software Knowledge and (5) Outputs.

Design/methodology/approach

The research method is based on qualitative and quantitative methods; a survey study is applied and the comparative results are evaluated with the path analysis method. The students in the Department of Architecture of two universities have been selected as the target audience. Case study 1 survey is applied to Altinbas University (AU) and Case study 2 survey is applied to Universitat Politecnica de Valencia (UPV) students during the COVID-19 pandemic; ‘19-‘20 spring term, online education.

Findings

As a result, two-path analysis diagrams are produced for two universities, and a comparative analysis is presented to reveal the relationships of the selected ADC components.

Originality/value

This paper fulfills an identified need to study how ADC can be developed in online education platforms.

Abstract

A garment technical drawing system and its database construction methodology is introduced in this paper. The system consists of an application program and a modulized database system. The advantage of this system is that it is possible to construct a garment's partial technical drawing easily using this database system, and it enables the combination of any part of drawing stored in the database.

Abstract

The five basic steps outlined in last month's article brought the student to the task of preparing a pictorial view from an orthogonal drawing. This, together with the reverse but easier technique of producing an orthogonal drawing from a pictorial view, is the foundation on which can be built the ability to produce lucid freehand sketches or formal drawings.

Abstract

No subject requires more critical analysis of its syllabus, course content, scheme of work, or in fact its whole conception and approach, than Engineering Drawing. At Eastleigh Technical College we have embarked on the development of a system of teaching and presentation which we believe will be more appropriate to the requirements of students than the present conventional approach which tends to teach drawing for drawing's sake, and almost to omit its main function.

Abstract

Purpose

Technical education in the twentieth century played an important role in the cultural life of Australia in ways are that routinely overlooked or forgotten. As all education is central to the cultural life of any nation this article traces the relationship between technical education and the national social imaginary. Specifically, the article focuses on the connection between art and technical education and does so by considering changing cultural representations of Australia.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon materials, that include school archives, an unpublished autobiography monograph, art catalogues and documentary film, the article details the lives and works of two artists, from different eras of twentieth century Australia. Utilising social memory as theorised by Connerton (1989, 2009, 2011), the article reflects on the lives of two Australian artists as examples of, and a way into appreciating, the enduring relationship between technical education and art.

Findings

The two artists, William Wallace Anderson and Carol Jerrems both products of, and teachers in, technical schools produced their own art that offered different insights into changes in Australia's national imaginary. By exploring their lives and work, the connections between technical education and art represent a social memory made material in the works of the artists and their representations of Australia's changing national imaginary.

Originality/value

This article features two artist teachers from technical schools as examples of the centrality of art to technical education. Through the teacher-artists lives and works the article highlights a shift in the Australian cultural imaginary at the same time as remembering the centrality of art to technical education. Through the twentieth century the relationship between art and technical education persisted, revealing the sensibilities of the times.

Abstract

The first article in this series stressed that from the point of view of teachers of Engineering Drawing, drawing comprehension was the primary requirement of all students engaged in engineering. The further point was made that the approach usually made to this vital requirement is usually too indirect. Important though design and draughting are in themselves, it must be clearly understood that they are only a means to an end. The end product that earns the money is not a beautifully executed set of engineering drawings of a faultless piece of design, but the actual hardware the drawings depict.

Abstract

Purpose

As social networking is becoming more popular, social software has achieved an important position in the internet business industry. For social software to be successful, it is crucial to understand how users form their continuous usage intentions toward social software. This paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Drawing upon socio-technical and social cognitive perspectives, this study proposes a theory-based model that investigates the interaction effects between social (i.e. perceived user base and relationship commitment) and technical (i.e. perceived system quality) factors of social software, in addition to their direct effects on continuous usage intentions. To empirically validate the proposed research model, a structural equation modelling technique was used.

Findings

The results of our model test indicate that all relevant social and technical factors are significant determinants of continuous usage intention. Moreover relationship commitment exhibits a positive interaction effect with perceived system quality on continuous usage intention, while perceived user base does not.

Practical implications

Service designers or providers of social software should make an effort to nurture social relationships among users, expand users' social networks, and reinforce users' relationship commitment to their friends.

Originality/value

Given the lack of investigations into socio-technical interactions in prior social software studies, the theoretical perspectives and empirical findings of this study are useful to both academics and practitioners. The findings also raise new implications regarding the various types of interactions (e.g. enhancing or suppressing) between the social and technical factors around social software.

Abstract

I suppose it is generally true that for most of the established professions, those who are outside any particular ‘magic circle’ regard the business which is carried on inside it as a complete mystery; full of pitfalls for the unwary; needing an enormous amount of hard work and training to get to the ‘top of the tree’; closely protected by an association or society, or even by the law!—and so on.

Abstract

If you have come into technical teaching in the olde worlde British way, it may come as a bit of a shock to learn what your opposite number in Russia will have gone through — compulsorily — to reach the same status. This is the fifth article in Mr Longden's series. Next month he describes the teaching and training techniques he saw in the USSR
