Abstract

Purpose

In order to make the aperture of spatial deployable antenna larger, this paper proposed the study on a spatial annular tensegrity structure with 100 m large scale, which could be one of the ideal solutions to improve the dimension of the antenna. This study is aiming to figure out the dynamic characteristic of ultra-large annular tensegrity and address the problem of insufficient rigidity with local modes that many ring truss-type deployable antenna structures have faced.

Design/methodology/approach

This work is carried out based on the nonlinear dynamic modelling when fully considering the effect of bending and torsion deformation of beams, as well as the pretension of cables. Additionally, the structural stability analysis based on the proposed stability criterion is also presented to evaluate the tensegrity configuration with different distribution of cable groups.

Findings

This research results verify that the modified structure with radial ribs could eliminate the effect of the local vibration mode on stiffness and is suitable to meet the requirements of the annular tensegrity structure. Additionally, the calculation results demonstrate that the structural configuration of annular tensegrity with 36 groups of cables which share the nodes with radial ribs is more appropriate to enhance the stiffness and structural stability.

Originality/value

A new large annular tensegrity structure with radial ribs and tensioned cables is proposed. Based on the proposed structural configuration, the positive definiteness of the tangent stiffness matrix is carried out as the criterion of stability and the composition of the analytical expression of the tangent stiffness matrix is analyzed. Four levels of tensegrity structure stability have been carried out and the influence of the structural parameters on the stability and the rigidity has been analyzed. A scaled-down prototype is developed to verify the feasibility of the design of the hoop-column-rib configuration by the deployment and dynamic experiment.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the post-buckling analysis of functionally graded columns by using three analytical, approximate and numerical methods. A pre-defined function as an initial assumption for the post-buckling path is introduced to solve the differential equation. The finite difference method is used to approximate the lateral deflection of the column based on the differential equation. Moreover, the finite element method is used to derive the tangent stiffness matrix of the column.

Design/methodology/approach

The non-linear buckling analysis of functionally graded materials is carried out by using three analytical, finite difference and finite element methods. The elastic deformation and Euler-Bernoulli beam theory are considered to establish the constitutive and kinematics relations, respectively. The governing differential equation of the post-buckling problem is derived through the energy method and the calculus variation.

Findings

An incremental iterative solution and the perturbation of the displacement vector at the critical buckling point are performed to determine the post-buckling path. The convergence of the finite element results and the effects of geometric and material characteristics on the post-buckling path are investigated.

Originality/value

The key point of the research is to compare three methods and to detect error sources by considering the derivation process of relations. This comparison shows that a non-incremental solution in the analytical and finite difference methods and an initial assumption in the analytical method lead to an error in results. However, the post-buckling path in the finite element method is traced by the updated tangent stiffness matrix in each load step without any initial limitation.

Abstract

Purpose

In this paper, the main factors influencing the structure stiffness will be analyzed by studying the tangent stiffness matrix based on different requirement in engineering practice. The authors can obtain the deformation of three-bar tensegrity basic unit in different load, and gain the primary factor by comparing the deformation, which will provide reference to concrete structure design in the engineering.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical model of tensegrity structure was built by establishing generalized node coordinates and connective matrix. Three main factors that affect the structure deformation can be obtained by analyzing the stiffness matrix, which is preload, Young's modulus, and cross-sectional area, the thinking of deformation also be sorted out. The deformation analysis of the concrete structure is carried out, and it is concluded that increasing the cross-sectional area can quickly improve the stiffness of the structure, which provides a reference for the structural variable stiffness design in practical engineering.

Findings

(1) When the axial external force is applied to the structure, the torsion-angle deformation of the structure is the largest, and the radial deformation of the structure is the smallest. (2) The structure stiffness can be rapidly enhanced by increasing the cross-sectional area. But the cross-sectional area can't be increased indefinitely. Because the mass will be increased once increasing the cross-sectional area, which will destroy the structure of the advantages of light weight in engineering practice.

Originality/value

The deformation analysis of the concrete structure is carried out, and it is concluded that increasing the cross-sectional area can quickly improve the stiffness of the structure, which provides a reference for the structural variable stiffness design in practical engineering.

Abstract

Purpose

The effect of bolt stripping failure on the ductility of steel end plate beam-column connections has received relatively little investigation to date. The objective with the present work is to establish a validated numerical model of end plate connections at elevated temperatures, which predicts the mechanical behaviour and failure modes observed in the experimental tests including the bolt stripping failure. Furthermore, the validated FE model was used to investigate the effect of stripping failure on both the rotational and load-bearing capacity of end plate connection.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis was conducted on a validated numerical model of end plate connections at elevated temperatures, which predicts the mechanical behaviour and failure modes observed in the experimental tests including the bolt stripping failure. The material was modelled considering ductile damage initiation and evolution featured in ABAQUS/Standard.

Findings

This study demonstrates that thick end plates can prevent stripping failure which significantly improves the rotational capacity of the connection. This failure mode can develop readily with thin end plates; however the effect is often unrealistically mitigated through idealised experimental tests. The rotational capacity of a connection can be 5.0 times higher if stripping failure is avoided, particularly at elevated temperatures. Eurocode 3 part 1.8 does not consider the possibility of stripping failure when discussing the requirements for plastic analysis. It is concluded in the present study that by allowing for the possibility of bolt stripping, the mode of failure can often shift from end plate failure to bolt stripping, this in turn significantly reduces the connection rotational capacity.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present work is to introduce a wavelet method for the solution of linear and nonlinear psi-Caputo fractional initial and boundary value problem.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors have introduced the new generalized operational matrices for the psi-CAS (Cosine and Sine) wavelets, and these matrices are successfully utilized for the solution of linear and nonlinear psi-Caputo fractional initial and boundary value problem. For the nonlinear problems, the authors merge the present method with the quasilinearization technique.

Findings

The authors have drived the orthogonality condition for the psi-CAS wavelets. The authors have derived and constructed the psi-CAS wavelets matrix, psi-CAS wavelets operational matrix of psi-fractional order integral and psi-CAS wavelets operational matrix of psi-fractional order integration for psi-fractional boundary value problem. These matrices are successfully utilized for the solutions of psi-Caputo fractional differential equations. The purpose of these operational matrices is to make the calculations faster. Furthermore, the authors have derived the convergence analysis of the method. The procedure of implementation for the proposed method is also given. For the accuracy and applicability of the method, the authors implemented the method on some linear and nonlinear psi-Caputo fractional initial and boundary value problems and compare the obtained results with exact solutions.

Originality/value

Since psi-Caputo fractional differential equation is a new and emerging field, many engineers can utilize the present technique for the numerical simulations of their linear/non-linear psi-Caputo fractional differential models. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the present work has never been introduced and implemented for psi-Caputo fractional differential equations.

Abstract

Purpose

This study proposes a tensegrity-based traction structure with D-bar dual cable units. It is used to connect the airship and the ground to stabilize the airship.

Design/methodology/approach

The mathematical models and dynamic models of the D-bar dual cable (hereafter referred to as DD cable) unit of the tensegrity-based traction structure are established. Based on the minimum mass method, the mass of the DD cable unit in the critical state (cable member is yielding, or bar member is buckling or yielding) is analyzed. Then, the tensile strength of the DD cable unit and single cable unit under the same condition is compared using the control variate method. Finally, based on ANSYS dynamic simulation, the stability of the two structures under the same external force disturbance was tested.

Findings

Expressions for the minimum mass of the DD cable unit under different failure conditions are solved. Dynamic simulation results show that the capacity of resisting disturbance of the DD cable unit is much better than that of the single cable unit under the same wind speed. So, we find a structure more suitable for the fixed connection of an airship.

Originality/value

This study helps to provide theoretical reference and thinking for the practical application of the traction structure with a D-bar dual cable unit.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology that was used to perform system identification of a dynamically unstable tilt-rotor from flight test data. The method incorporated wavelet transform into the maximum likelihood principle formulation, emphasizing both time and frequency responses. Using wavelets allowed to additionally filter noise in the data, and this increased the estimation quality. This approach did not require measurement and process noise modeling in contrast to the Kalman filter usage for parameter estimation.

Design/methodology/approach

In the study, lateral-directional stability and control derivatives of an unstable tiltrotor in hover were estimated. This was performed by applying the maximum likelihood output error method. The estimated model response was decomposed using the Mallat pyramid and matched to wavelet coefficients obtained directly from measurements. In addition, a coherence-based weighting function was used to put more emphasis on the most reliable data. For comparison, the same set of data was used to identify a model with the same structure using the maximum likelihood principle with an incorporated Kalman filter.

Findings

It was found that maximum likelihood principle and wavelet transform allowed for estimating aerodynamic coefficients of a dynamically unstable aircraft. The estimation was performed with high accuracy.

Practical implications

The designed method can be used for system identification of unstable aircraft and when additional noise is present (e.g. when noise due to turbulence was observable during the flight test or higher noise levels were present in the sensors data).

Originality/value

The paper presents verification of a wavelet-based maximum likelihood principle output error method using flight test data.

Abstract

Purpose

When establishing a mathematical model to simulate solid mechanics, considering realistic geometries, special tools are needed to translate measured data, possibly with noise, into idealized geometrical entities. As an engineering application, wheel-rail contact interactions are fundamental in the dynamic modeling of railway vehicles. Many approaches used to solve the contact problem require a continuous parametric description of the geometries involved. However, measured wheel and rail profiles are often available as sets of discrete points. A reconstruction method is needed to transform discrete data into a continuous geometry.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors present an approximation method based on optimization to solve the problem of fitting a set of points with an arc spline. It consists of an initial guess based on a curvature function estimated from the data, followed by a least-squares optimization to improve the approximation. The authors also present a segmentation scheme that allows the method to increment the number of segments of the spline, trying to keep it at a minimal value, to satisfy a given error tolerance.

Findings

The paper provides a better understanding of arc splines and how they can be deformed. Examples with parametric curves and slightly noisy data from realistic wheel and rail profiles show that the approach is successful.

Originality/value

The developed methods have theoretical value. Furthermore, they have practical value since the approximation approach is better suited to deal with the reconstruction of wheel/rail profiles than interpolation, which most methods use to some degree.

Abstract

Purpose

Radio frequency (RF) technology relies on the electromagnetic properties of the materials used, which includes their complex permittivities and loss tangents. To measure these properties, techniques for material characterization such as the transmission/reflection method are used in conjunction with conversion techniques to calculate these values from scattering parameters. Unfortunately, these techniques rely on relatively expensive rectangular waveguide adaptors and components, especially if testing over large frequency ranges. This paper aims to overcome this challenge by developing a more affordable test equipment solution based on additively manufactured waveguide sections.

Design/methodology/approach

To evaluate the effectiveness of using additively manufactured waveguides to perform electromagnetic characterization with the transmission/reflection method, samples of PLA Tough with varying infill percentages and samples made from several Formlabs photopolymer resins are fabricated and analyzed.

Findings

Results show that the method yielded permittivity and loss tangent values for the measured materials that generally agree with those found in the literature, supporting its credibility.

Originality/value

The accessibility of this measurement technique will ideally allow for more electromagnetic material characterization to occur and expand the possible use of additive manufacturing in future RF designs. This work also provides characterization of several Formlabs photopolymer resins, which have not been widely analyzed in the current literature.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to conveniently and accurately design partial knitting knitted fabrics based on matrix transformation.

Design/methodology/approach

Using mathematical modeling, the pattern diagram block matrix and process design matrix of partial knitting knitted fabrics are established, and the process knitting diagram with parameter information is generated. Based on the establishment of the mathematical model of the process knitting diagram, a loop deformation method based on three-dimensional (3D) coordinate point matrix transformation is proposed.

Findings

The matrix transformation method can provide a suitable deformed loop mode for partial knitting knitted fabrics and helps to generate a 3D modeling diagram conveniently.

Originality/value

This paper proposed a method of design and modeling of partial knitting knitted fabric based on matrix transformation. Taking the 3D modeling effect of conventional partial knitting as an example to test the modeling method, the results show that after matrix transformation, the loop model can realize the rapid transformation and calculation of the coordinates of the control point and generate a 3D modeling diagram.
