Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reach a deeper understanding of the Lean principle of respect for people (RFP to facilitate Lean implementation in Western organizations outside Toyota.

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses an interpretative, hermeneutic approach to understand the RFP concept through a literature study of existing research about Lean implementation, and an inquiry into the underlying meaning of the RFP principle, by studying sources from Toyota and discussions about the RFP principle in Japan.

Findings

RFP is seen as a central principle in Lean implementations, but the failure of RFP is believed to cause Lean implementations to fail. The literature about Lean discusses the RFP principle both as a general positive atmosphere and as focused on developing the work capacity of employees. By studying the sources from Toyota, it could be understood that RFP is based on ought-respect. The authors also find that RFP is related to takumi, a perfected form of craftsmanship. The authors translate the concept to English by tying it to the recent literature about craft to develop RFP as RFC – respect for craftsmanship.

Research limitations/implications

As this is a conceptual paper, it is difficult to translate the findings into a tool for companies and organizations to use. However, that is the point of the paper: that the most important ideas are not translatable into tools.

Practical implications

It is necessary in Lean implementations to connect people’s work to craftsmanship. Through a discussion of craftsmanship before Lean implementations, it might be possible to nurture an understanding of the underlying values of Lean.

Originality/value

The authors have not found any papers that propose takumi as the base of the RFP principle, nor as a foundational concept at Toyota. It is necessary to understand the concept of takumi, as perfection in craft, to understand the RFP principle.

Abstract

Purpose

As a measure against plastic waste, Coca-Cola and Evian have begun introducing label-free plastic bottles. Food labels have long been recognized as an important marketing tool, but there is a lack of research on label-free products. To address this gap, this study examined the influence of label-free design on product attractiveness in the Japanese green tea market.

Design/methodology/approach

If existing products are used in an experiment, respondents would be subject to brand image bias. Hence, by mechanically combining the main design elements (cap shape, bottle style, decoration line, logo and label) with an orthogonal array, the conditions for bottles with and without labels are completely aligned. The authors conducted an online survey and applied the chi-square test to the attractiveness of 18 designs presented in random order.

Findings

Label-free designs were more attractive to consumers than labeled designs. The effect was higher among female, middle-aged and older adults; those with higher annual income and low-frequency purchasers.

Practical implications

Practitioners should adopt a label-free design that can satisfy both environmental considerations and customer value. It would be a formidable challenge to change the longstanding emphasis placed on label design, but this study demonstrates the value of doing so.

Originality/value

This is the first study in the package design literature on the advantages of label-free plastic bottles. The authors also applied an orthogonal array used for many years to optimize objective numerical values in marketing research.

The authors analyzed data and information mainly from the company’s annual reports and the books written by the CEO.

Case overview/synopsis

How and when can a “value” brand upscale its brand image? In the wake of the financial crisis of 2007–2008, UNIQLO – Japan’s street fashion brand – considered introducing a new brand collaboration. They needed to capture the attention of younger, more fashionable consumers. However, people were tightening their spending as they faced uncertainties related to their jobs and wealth. Even though UNIQLO had had a steady growth in sales for the previous 24 years, it was questionable whether it was strategically a good time to launch a premium brand collaboration. And if so, who was the right partner? High-end designer Jil Sander, fashionable New York-based Theory or emerging French “casual luxury” brand Comptoir des Cotonniers?

Complexity academic level

This case is about the challenges faced by a low-priced brand to collaborate with a high-end brand to enhance the brand image. It explores the important elements to take into consideration when evaluating launching collaboration using the high-end brand’s name. The students will learn how to examine the risks and benefits of creating a new image for the core brand. If the students had learnt branding or brand extension before, this case can be used to teach how consumer’s perception affects brand extension and the target market’s impact on pricing and distribution strategies. It can be used for a marketing course at the MBA level to explore the concepts in a growing company’s brand image or an undergraduate specialized course in brand management or marketing management. The students also learn how the fashion industry’s supply chain management works to adapt to rapidly changing fashion trends.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, the bending strength, flexural buckling strength and collapse temperature of small steel specimens with rectangular cross-sections were examined by steady and transient state tests with various heating and deformation rates.

Design/methodology/approach

The engineering stress and strain relationships for Japan industrial standard (JIS) SN400 B mild steels at elevated temperatures were obtained by coupon tests under three strain rates. A bending test using a simple supported small beam specimen was conducted to examine the effects of the deformation rates on the centre deflection under steady-state conditions and the heating rates under transient state conditions. Flexural buckling tests using the same cross-section specimen as that used in the bending test were conducted under steady-state and transient-state conditions.

Findings

It was clarified that the bending strength and collapse temperature are evaluated by the full plastic moment using the effective strength when the strain is equal to 0.01 or 0.02 under fast strain rates (0.03 and 0.07 min–1). In contrast, the flexural buckling strength and collapse temperature are approximately evaluated by the buckling strength using the 0.002 offset yield strength under a slow strain rate (0.003 min–1).

Originality/value

Regarding both bending and flexural buckling strengths and collapse temperatures of steel members subjected to fire, the relationships among effects of steel strain rate for coupon test results, heating and deformation rates for the heated steel members were minutely investigated by the steady and transient-state tests at elevated temperatures.

Abstract

Purpose

In this study, engineering stress-strain relationships considering an effect of strain rate on steel materials at elevated temperatures were formulated and a simplified analytical model using a two-dimensional beam element to analytically examine the effect of strain rate on the load-bearing capacity and collapse temperature was proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

The stress-strain relationships taking into account temperature, strain, and strain rate were established based on the past coupon test results with strain rate as the test parameter. Furthermore, an elasto-plastic analysis using a two-dimensional beam element, which considered the effect on strain rate, was conducted for both transient- and steady-state conditions.

Findings

The analytical results agreed relatively well with the test results, which used small steel beam specimens with a rectangular cross-section under various heating rates (transient-state condition) and deformation rates (steady-state condition). It was found that the bending strength and collapse temperature obtained from the parametric analyses agreed relatively well with those evaluated using the effective strength obtained from the coupon tests with strain equal to 0.01 or 0.02 under the fast strain rates.

Originality/value

The effect of stress degradation, including the stress-strain relationships at elevated temperature, was mitigated by considering the effect of strain rate on the analytical model. This is an important point to consider when considering the effect of strain rate on steel structural analysis at elevated temperatures to maintain analytical stability unaccompanied by the stress degradation.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the tensile strengths of JIS G3549 super high-strength steel strand wire ropes (1,570 MPa-class high-carbon steels) and wire rope open swaged socket connections at fire and post fire.

Design/methodology/approach

Steady-state tests from ambient temperature (20 °C) to 800 °C, transient-state tests under the allowable design tensile force and tensile tests in an ambient temperature environment after heating (heating temperatures of 200–800 °C) were conducted.

Findings

The tensile strengths of the wire rope and end-connection specimens at both fire and post fire were obtained. The steel wire rope specimens possessed larger reduction factors than general hot-rolled mild steels (JIS SS400) and high-strength steel bolts (JIS F10T). The end-connection specimens with sufficient socket lengths exhibited ductile fracture of the wire rope part at both fire and post fire; however, those with short socket lengths experienced a pull-out fracture at the socket.

Originality/value

The fundamental and important tensile test results of the super high-strength steel strand wire ropes (1,570 MPa-class high-carbon steels) and wire rope open swaged socket connections were accumulated at fire and post fire, and the fracture modes were clarified. The obtained test results contribute to fire resistance performance-based design of cable steel structures at fire and fire-damage investigations to consider their reusability post fire.

Abstract

Purpose

In recent years, e-commerce (EC) sites dealing in various goods and services have increased along with internet popularity. Now, very few EC recommendation systems present a concrete reason for their recommendations. Therefore, because user preferences strongly influence outcomes, evaluation and selection are difficult for items, such as books, movies and luxury goods. The purpose of this paper is evoking interest by showing the review as a reason for a user’s decision-making factor. This paper aims to presents the development and introduction of a recommendation system that presents a review adapted to user preference.

Design/methodology/approach

The system presents a review to the user, which indicates the reason for matching the item contents and user preferences. Thereby, this system enables the creation of personalized reasons for recommendations.

Findings

Recommendation sentences conforming to user preferences are effective for item selection. Even with a simple method, in this paper, it was possible to present a review which is an item selection factor sufficient for the user.

Originality/value

This system can show a recommendation sentence that conforms to a user’s preferences merely from a user profile with the tag data of a product. This paper dealt in movies, but it can easily be applied even for other items.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mediating role of prosociality, which is defined in terms of helping and benefitting others, between teacher collaboration and their turnover intentions. Prosociality was measured as prosocial impact and prosocial motivation.

Design/methodology/approach

This study was conducted through a cross-sectional survey of 260 elementary and junior high school teachers in Japan. A structural equational model was employed to examine the mediating roles of prosocial impact and prosocial motivation in the relationships between teacher collaboration and their turnover intention.

Findings

The results, first, supported the hypotheses: the high perception of teacher collaboration in school predicted high perceived prosocial impact; high perceived prosocial impact predicted high perceived prosocial motivation; and high perceived prosocial motivation predicted decreased turnover intention. Second, results supported partial mediating roles of prosocial impact and prosocial motivation between teacher collaboration and turnover intention.

Research limitations/implications

Limitations of this study include cross-sectional data that may limit the potential for causal inferences, and self-report data. Future studies should incorporate alternative designs.

Practical implications

Results indicate that teacher collaboration contributes to less teacher turnover intention via prosociality. Thus, to enhance teachers’ prosocial impact, more opportunities to realise their collaboration should be considered.

Originality/value

This is the first study to explore the relationships between teacher collaboration and turnover intention in educational organisations with prosociality, which resides as core goals and objectives of teachers.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate a four-year mentorship program for Japanese graduate students at a private university in Tokyo, Japan. The following research questions were investigated: First, does mentorship provide effective and adequate preparation needed for graduate students to perform competitively (e.g. attending conferences, publishing in journals, etc.) in academic forums? Second, what kinds of benefits are gained by the mentees? Third, what factors are conducive to the benefits accrued by the mentees? Fourth, what are the obstacles to providing an effective mentorship program?

Design/methodology/approach

Adopting narrative approach as its research method, this study collected and analyzed reflective essays from 13 Japanese students in a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program.

Findings

Particular types of mentoring which encouraged active participation in scholarly activities through appropriately scaffolded inductions into academia led to increased mentee confidence in terms of making the transition from student to scholar.

Research limitations/implications

The students should not remain assistants on the periphery of academia, but rather play active roles to extend their knowledge and expertise to something that they can attain only with appropriate scaffolding (Vygotsky, 1981). In order to promote such mentorship, it is emphasized that institutional support is indispensable, and that the significance of solid mentorship programs should be re-acknowledged and discussed on an official level.

Originality/value

The study of mentoring within a Japanese context, in particular from the perspectives of sociocultural theory (Vygotsky, 1981) and Bandura's (1994, 1995) self-efficacy theory, is an under-researched area.
