Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to deliver an approach of how lightweight robot systems can be used to automate manual processes for higher efficiency, increased process capability and enhanced ergonomics. To show how these systems can be utilized in practice, a new collaborative testing system for an automated water leak test was designed using an image processing system utilized by the robot.

Design/methodology/approach

The “water leak test” in an automotive final assembly line is often a significant cost factor due to its labour-intensive nature. This is particularly the case for premium car manufacturers as each vehicle is watered and manually inspected for leakage. This paper delivers an approach that optimizes the efficiency and capability of the test process by using a new automated in-line inspection system whereby thermographic images are taken by a lightweight robot system and then processed to locate the leak. Such optimization allows the collaboration of robots and manual labour which, in turn, enhances the capability of the process station.

Findings

This paper examines the development of novel applications for lightweight robotic systems and provides a suitable process whereby the systems are optimized in technical, ergonomic and safety-related aspects.

Research limitations/implications

A new automated testing process in combination with a processing algorithm was developed.

Practical implications

To optimize and validate the system, it was set up in a true to reality model factory and brought to a prototypical status. Several original equipment manufacturers showed great interest in implementing the system in their assembly line.

Social implications

The direct human–robot collaboration allows humans and robots to share the same workspace without strict separation measures which is a great advantage compared with traditional industrial robots. The workers benefit from a more ergonomic workflow and are relieved from unpleasant, repetitive and burdensome tasks.

Originality/value

A lightweight robotic system was implemented in a continuous assembly line as a new area of application for these systems. The automated water leak test gives a practical example of how to enrich the assembly and commissioning lines, which are currently dominated by manual labour, with new technologies. This is necessary to reach a higher efficiency and process capability while maintaining a higher flexibility potential than fully automated systems.

Examines the thirteenth published year of the ITCRR. Runs the whole gamut of textile innovation, research and testing, some of which investigates hitherto untouched aspects. Subjects discussed include cotton fabric processing, asbestos substitutes, textile adjuncts to cardiovascular surgery, wet textile processes, hand evaluation, nanotechnology, thermoplastic composites, robotic ironing, protective clothing (agricultural and industrial), ecological aspects of fibre properties – to name but a few! There would appear to be no limit to the future potential for textile applications.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a new approach to testing distributed energy resources (DERs) in compliance with the IEEE 1547-2018 standard and describes a new, integrated testing and validation system.

Design/methodology/approach

The system is built on the virtual instrumentation paradigm, using acquisition modules to measure physical quantities, while signal processing, including intensive calculations of required parameters, data processing, manipulation and reporting are performed on a computing device.

Findings

Intensive laboratory measurements were performed on a laboratory prototype of a microgrid that emulates DERs. The results obtained using the system described were compared with the measurements obtained by the reference instruments. As all the results match, the usability of the system was verified.

Practical implications

This approach to the realization of the testing and validation system has obvious advantages compared to the classical instruments and provides significant flexibility in multiple aspects. First, the system described integrates all the functions of different instruments into one measuring system, making the entire testing and validation process significantly cheaper and faster. Second, the implementation of the system is possible on different computing platforms depending on specific needs. Third, the software implementation of the system functions enables simple upgrading and the introduction of new functions or changes to existing ones according to changes in the standard. Finally, the system described is designed to automatically provide reports on compliance with the standard.

Originality/value

This paper emphasizes the advantages of the proposed approach over classical testing. The value of the paper is reflected in the applicability and practical implications of the proposed and described hardware and software technical solutions.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to focus on how long‐term digital archiving systems are tested and what benchmarks and other metrics are necessary for that testing to produce data that the community can use to make decisions.

Design/methodology/approach

The article reviews recent literature about digital archiving systems involving public and semi‐public tests. It then looks specifically at the rules and metrics needed for doing public or semi‐public testing for three specific issues: triggering migration; ingest rates; and storage capacity measurement.

Findings

Important literature on testing exists but common metrics do not, and too few data are available at this point to establish them reliably. Metrics are needed to judge the quality and timeliness of an archive's migration services. Archives should offer benchmarks for the speed of ingest, but that will happen only once they come to agreement about starting and ending points. Storage capacity is another area where librarians are raising questions, but without proxy measures and agreement about data amounts, such testing cannot proceed.

Practical implications

Testing is necessary to develop useful metrics and benchmarks about performance. At present the archiving community has too little data on which to make decisions about long term digital archiving, and as long as that is the case, the decisions may well be flawed.

Originality/value

The article shows that testing is key to making rational decisions about digital long term archiving systems but establishing metrics and rules by which librarians can compare the results is far from easy.

Abstract

The requirement for an automated test system has immensely increased due to the realization that manual testing is associated with additional resources and staffing constraints. In order to achieve a competitive edge, reduced development cost, timely product delivery, and product quality are mandatory in today's organization. Manual testing requires skilled operators that increase cost, time, and product delivery. The low cost computer-based automated system helps to get an edge by fulfilling these organizational demands. In this paper, an automated testing system has been developed to support functional testing of all phases of Nortel Networks 1-Meg modem system as its system under test (SUT). The modem is an inherently complex asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) product and its testing is far more complex than just verification of process faults. The complexity of ADSL system renders automated test system an important and imperative part of ADSL testing. The subject paper demonstrates the indispensable need of automated test system for ADSL testing and its relative advantages in providing some benefit for the organization.

Abstract

Purpose

Software testing is needed to produce extremely reliable software products. A crucial decision problem that the software developer encounters is to ascertain when to terminate the testing process and when to release the software system in the market. With the growing need to deliver quality software, the critical assessment of reliability, cost of testing and release time strategy is requisite for project managers. This study seeks to examine the reliability of the software system by proposing a generalized testing coverage-based software reliability growth model (SRGM) that incorporates the effect of testing efforts and change point. Moreover, the strategic software time-to-market policy based on costreliability criteria is suggested.

Design/methodology/approach

The fault detection process is modeled as a composite function of testing coverage, testing efforts and the continuation time of the testing process. Also, to assimilate factual scenarios, the current research exhibits the influence of software users refer as reporters in the fault detection process. Thus, this study models the reliability growth phenomenon by integrating the number of reporters and the number of instructions executed in the field environment. Besides, it is presumed that the managers release the software early to capture maximum market share and continue the testing process for an added period in the user environment. The multiattribute utility theory (MAUT) is applied to solve the optimization model with release time and testing termination time as two decision variables.

Findings

The practical applicability and performance of the proposed methodology are demonstrated through real-life software failure data. The findings of the empirical analysis have shown the superiority of the present study as compared to conventional approaches.

Originality/value

This study is the first attempt to assimilate testing coverage phenomenon in joint optimization of software time to market and testing duration.

Abstract

Purpose

The experimental modal analysis requires good knowledge of various engineering fields, such as mechanical vibrations, transducers used in vibration measurement, transducers and system calibration methods, data acquisition systems, digital signal processing and system identification. Test facilities constitute a key factor for improving the quality of the estimated modal model. This paper aims to describe the experimental facilities at the Institute of Aeronautics and Space (IAE) Modal Testing Laboratory in terms of associated instrumentation and data acquisition system, metrological aspects and computational resources. The discussion is completed with a practical application showing a ground vibration testing (GVT) of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

Design/methodology/approach

The experimental facilities were evaluated in a typical GVT, using three shakers in both vertical and horizontal excitations and 88 response measurement points. The global excitation method was used to excite all desired modes. The reliability of the experimental modal model was validated by an auto modal assurance criterion matrix for the measured modes of the structure.

Findings

The experimental facilities were successfully used for validating the dynamical characteristics of the UAV under testing.

Originality/value

The modal test facilities of the Modal Testing Laboratory at the IAE, the main research center of the Brazilian Air Force, are described in this paper.
