Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of topic sensitivity and the research design techniques of forced answering (FA) (i.e. cannot proceed if leave an answer blank) and response options (use of “prefer not to answer” (PNA) option) on respondent motives for participating in an internet-based survey.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected in a field experiment in Hong Kong using a 2×2×2 factorial design. Variables manipulated were topic sensitivity, use of FA, and response options. The dependent variables were eight specific motives which were obtained from responses to the survey participation inventory (SPI).

Findings

Topic sensitivity has a significant influence on seven of the eight motives. The use of FA does not appear to affect motives. In contrast, the use of the response option “PNA” has a significant effect on all motives except “obligation”. The SPI appears to be a viable measure to the use with Hong Kong online panellists, and perhaps with other Asian and non-Western cultures/countries as well.

Research limitations/implications

The present study tested only two specific topics, each with a specific level of sensitivity. Further research should apply the SPI to topics of varying levels of sensitivity. The present study used a sample of panel members. Future research could examine motivation for survey participation for use with off-line samples.

Practical implications

There are differences in motivation for survey participation among panellists. The authors relate panellists' motivation to topic sensitivity and confirm that panellists who answered questions about a sensitive topic were less motivated to participate in every motivational aspect, except for incentives. The authors find that the survey design feature of FA is largely unrelated to panellists' motivation.

Originality/value

This is one of the few studies that show the impact of topic sensitivity, FA, and response options on motives for responding. It is the first use of the SPI in a non-Western culture/nation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider issues related to gamification through the non-game aquarium context and explore how the intention of aquarium visitors to play a game that imparts knowledge about marine animals and promotes the conservation of these animals is influenced by visitors’ attitudes toward marine animals, motivations to visit the aquarium and perceptions of the game’s benefits.

Design/methodology/approach

This study surveyed individuals who have visited Taiwan’s National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium at least once in the past three years and who use smartphones. They were shown a description of a hypothetical game scenario that they were asked to imagine to be available while at the aquarium. The partial least squares method was used to analyze the data from 225 returns.

Findings

The study shows that gamification can satisfy a visitor’s desire to learn and enjoy the aquarium simultaneously. Gamification is limited by the visit motivation and the attitudes toward marine animals that visitors bring with them. The usefulness of gamification is limited when visitors desire relaxation during the visit.

Originality/value

This study considers the application of gamification in the context of aquariums and the tourism field and the non-technology-related antecedents to the use of gamification. Gamification is not silver bullet for every situation, and a good understanding of potential users is important for its success and targeting of players. The importance of intrinsic benefits over extrinsic benefits is confirmed. Thus, this study addresses several gaps in the gamification literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework that illustrates the role of Lean Six Sigma (LSS) in creating organisational innovation climate by investigating the relationship between LSS’s intangible impacts and organisational innovation climate factors.

Design/methodology/approach

A self-administrated survey questionnaire was distributed among 145 public sector officials to get their opinions on the relationship between various observable elements of LSS’s intangible impacts and organisational innovation climate factors, where a response rate of 73.8% was achieved. The collected data were demographically, descriptively and statistically analysed. Accordingly, a house-of-pillars-based framework that illustrates the role of LSS’s intangible impacts in creating innovation climate in an organisation was developed.

Findings

Results from this study indicated that LSS’s intangible impacts on organisational structure and hierarchy, culture, change adaptability, utilisation of staff and staff’s behavioural aspects are positively related to many of organisational innovation climate factors such as trust and openness, challenge and involvement, support for ideas and freedom and autonomy.

Research limitations/implications

The findings of this study are based on the data collected from public sector organisations in the UAE and are supported by relevant literature. However, this study can provide useful guidance for further research for the generalisation of the results to wider scopes in terms of sectors and geographical domains.

Practical implications

The findings of this study will provide UAE public sector officials with a clear roadmap on how to use LSS for promoting innovation and fostering its implementation in practice. This study will also encourage professionals in public sectors to integrate LSS into their innovation strategies to enhance organisational innovativeness and improve service quality.

Originality/value

It is one of the first studies that explores LSS’s intangible impacts and assesses their relationship with organisational innovation climate factors. Hence, this study offers valuable insights for both academics and practitioners and is expected to lay a foundation for a better understanding of how LSS’s intangible impacts can be used in creating organisational innovation climate.

Abstract

This research explores perceptions of knowledge management processes held by managers and employees in a service industry. To date, empirical research on knowledge management in the service industry is sparse. This research seeks to examine absorptive capacity and its four capabilities of acquisition, assimilation, transformation and exploitation and their impact on effective knowledge management. All of these capabilities are strategies that enable external knowledge to be recognized, imported and integrated into, and further developed within the organization effectively. The research tests the relationships between absorptive capacity and effective knowledge management through analysis of quantitative data (n = 549) drawn from managers and employees in 35 residential aged care organizations in Western Australia. Responses were analysed using Partial Least Square-based Structural Equation Modelling. Additional analysis was conducted to assess if the job role (of manager or employee) and three industry context variables of profit motive, size of business and length of time the organization has been in business, impacted on the hypothesized relationships.

Structural model analysis examines the relationships between variables as hypothesized in the research framework. Analysis found that absorptive capacity and the four capabilities correlated significantly with effective knowledge management, with absorptive capacity explaining 56% of the total variability for effective knowledge management. Findings from this research also show that absorptive capacity and the four capabilities provide a useful framework for examining knowledge management in the service industry. Additionally, there were no significant differences in the perceptions held between managers and employees, nor between respondents in for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Furthermore, the size of the organization and length of time the organization has been in business did not impact on absorptive capacity, the four capabilities and effective knowledge management.

The research considers implications for business in light of these findings. The role of managers in providing leadership across the knowledge management process was confirmed, as well as the importance of guiding routines and knowledge sharing throughout the organization. Further, the results indicate that within the participating organizations there are discernible differences in the way that some organizations manage their knowledge, compared to others. To achieve effective knowledge management, managers need to provide a supportive workplace culture, facilitate strong employee relationships, encourage employees to seek out new knowledge, continually engage in two-way communication with employees and provide up-to-date policies and procedures that guide employees in doing their work. The implementation of knowledge management strategies has also been shown in this research to enhance the delivery and quality of residential aged care.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine motivations underlying UK repurchase activity. Specifically, the paper inquires into the relevance of a range of different explanations for repurchases and perceptions of regulation surrounding them. Emphasis of the paper is, however, on motives linked specifically to repurchases rather than income distribution, more generally.

Design/methodology/approach

The study uses a survey approach to capture the views on repurchases of corporate managers and investors. It supplements the survey data with secondary information about the companies to better understand repurchase behaviour.

Findings

Results indicate that repurchase use is influenced by motives linked specifically to this tool rather than those associated with income distribution, more generally. In particular, repurchases are used to return surplus cash to investors, signal undervaluation and influence gearing and earnings per share levels. In the latter case, companies appear to use repurchases to perform a value added role, alongside manipulating the EPS level and thus the latter may simply be a by-product of the former. Private investors may nevertheless be vulnerable to such manipulation, given their limited financial literacy.

Research limitations/implications

The study relied on a survey of managers and investors and univariate analysis. In the former case, respondent numbers, particularly for the investor community were low, raising questions as to the generalisability of the data. In the latter, the results may be mis-stated owing to the simplicity of the analysis.

Practical implications

Overall, the survey results suggest that firms use repurchase programmes in different contexts to dividend payments and in appropriate circumstances. While managers and investors broadly share similar views, private shareholders may be in a vulnerable position given their limited financial literacy.

Originality/value

This is the first UK study on repurchases that examines the relative importance of a range of motives underlying repurchases. Moreover, it assesses in detail the core hypotheses that are linked specifically to repurchase programmes to better understand UK repurchase behaviour. It does so by supplementing the survey data with additional company information and comparing the views of the different audiences surveyed.

Abstract

Although we have achieved a greater understanding of cryptomarket specifics, evidence on the consumer side of cryptomarkets is still needed – not only regarding the role of cryptomarkets on individual drug-using careers but also on the motives for buying illicit drugs from cryptomarkets. Moreover, research has indicated that national differences exist regarding different variables relating to cryptomarket use and prevalence, as well as to why users are drawn to these markets. In this chapter, the author presents the results of a Belgian case study focusing on drug cryptomarket buyers. Using an online quantitative survey (N = 99) and semi-structured interviews (N = 10), we gain exploratory insight into the motives of Belgian buyers sourcing illicit drugs from cryptomarkets and how they believe these cryptomarkets affect their drug-using careers. Results indicate that most of the respondents had bought drugs offline before buying them from cryptomarkets and that the frequency of their drug use did not change once cryptomarkets were accessed. Almost 60% of our respondents, however, consumed different drugs or a wider range of drugs following their cryptomarket use. Furthermore, most of the respondents purchased from cryptomarkets for their personal consumption, and some of them also shared their supply with friends, that is, social supply. The alternative drug offer was the principal reason why they were using cryptomarkets, followed by curiosity and the price and the quality of the drugs. Although the respondents in this study were well aware of different risks related to market vendors, market administrators, and law enforcement, these risks were considered to be minimal and part of the cryptomarket environment. The results of this case study are informative and highlight areas requiring further research.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the perceived benefits of integrated reporting (IR) and factors influencing the motives that supervisory board members (SBMs) have for advocating a change towards IR implementation.

Design/methodology/approach

An exploratory survey study was conducted to investigate the influence of external market conditions, internal organizational conditions and observed benefits on the motivation to advocate IR adoption in companies that have not yet implemented IR. A unique set of survey data from 62 SBMs of Dutch companies was used for analysing the propositions derived from IR literature and based on institutional theory, legitimacy theory and diffusion of innovation theory.

Findings

The respondents indicated to be supportive of IR adoption. SBMs who had experienced the implementation of IR observed that IR offers benefits. Their motives for advocating a change towards IR in companies that had not implemented IR were influenced most by the observed benefits in IR companies. SBMs only involved in companies that had not adopted IR are motivated to support IR adoption to a similar extent. These findings suggest that directly observed benefits by SBMs need to exceed a considerable minimum level before these SBMs are more motived to advocate IR than their peers who have not witnessed the implementation of IR and that experiences are shared across companies. The motivation of both groups is influenced by external market conditions but not by internal organizational conditions.

Practical implications

The findings have implications for potential IR adopters and institutions promoting the further diffusion of IR as they emphasize the need for tangible benefits of IR and confirm that sharing good practices and benefits of IR can provide a catalyst for IR adoption. The findings contribute to the understanding of the motivation of SBMs as an important organizational condition for implementing IR as this study provides insights in the factors that drive this motivation of key actors influencing the decision to implement IR. Furthermore, the finding that these factors predominantly comprise tangible results and external market conditions is relevant from an organizational change perspective.

Social implications

Understanding the mechanisms of IR-adoption decisions provides a relevant basis for deploying programmes promoting IR as a general reporting standard. This could provide society and a broad range of stakeholders with access to information incorporated in integrated reports. It could ultimately have a major impact on society by improving decision-making and increasing the long-term sustainability of organizations and their relations with stakeholders.

Originality/value

This study provides preliminary empirical evidence concerning the perspectives of SBMs on their motives for advocating IR, based on a unique sample from a country that has been involved with IR from its start.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the opinions of managers of Indian firms on stock splits and bonus shares (stock dividends) and relate them to explanations for stock distributions identified in the prior literature.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use descriptive statistics from a mail survey to the company secretaries of 500 firms listed on the National Stock Exchange of India to elicit their responses about statements involving stock splits and bonus shares.

Findings

The survey evidence shows that among the competing motives for stock splits, the liquidity hypothesis receives the highest level of support followed by the attention-getting variant of the signaling hypothesis, signaling, and the preferred trading range hypotheses. Regarding bonus shares, respondents express strong support for the retained earnings, liquidity, and signaling hypotheses but lesser support for the cash substitution and preferred trading range hypotheses.

Research limitations/implications

The survey evidence provides new insights into the stated motivations for stock distributions, especially bonus shares, among Indian firms but the ability to generalize the results is tempered by the relatively small number of respondents. This limits the ability to test for statistically significant differences between the various competing hypotheses. Hence, the results are suggestive rather than definitive.

Practical implications

The survey evidence suggests that no single explanation dominates all others for issuing stock splits or bonus shares in India. Thus, managers have multiple reasons for engaging in stock distributions.

Originality/value

Few studies use survey methodology to examine Indian dividend policy. Given the dearth of survey evidence on stock distributions among Indian firms, this study not only updates the limited evidence on stock splits but also provides the first survey evidence about managerial views on bonus shares.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the relative importance of the motives and sub‐motives which influence a highly educated individual's decision to move across global boundaries.

Design/methodology/approach

The approach takes a multi‐dimensional perspective of mobility, resulting in the development of a range of motives for self‐initiated mobility. The paper employs a quantitative methodology, with over 2,600 internet survey responses from highly educated New Zealanders living and working around the world.

Findings

The importance of the cultural and travel opportunities and career motives are highlighted as the most important motives in a decision to be mobile. Within these motives, opportunities for travel and adventure and for career development were central. Economics was ranked as the third most important motive, contrary to the extant literature, followed by relationships, quality of life and the political environment. The priority accorded to each of these motives varies according to gender, location and life stage, creating different equations of motivation. The paper explores the implications of these findings to career theory.

Research limitations/implications

The study focuses only on New Zealanders living abroad and there may be some factors, which apply to these people but not to people from other countries.

Practical implications

The data could be useful for policy makers trying to either retain highly educated people in the home country, or to attract them back from abroad.

Originality/value

The study utilises a novel methodology to identify the relative importance of motivating factors and shows that there is a different mixture of these motives at different life stages.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to summarise the findings of the perceptions of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) and senior executives of South African listed companies on the perceived benefits and implementation challenges as a result of implementing integrated reporting (IR) requirements, as well as motives for preparing an integrated report; it is performed two years into the South African IR regime,. South African-listed companies are among the first in the world to be subject to compliance with IR requirements in terms of stock exchange listing requirements. IR, as a novel and evolutionary step in corporate reporting, along with the influence that integrated thinking and IR principles will have on companies, has been the subject of global debate in recent years.

Design/methodology/approach

The research instrument used in the study comprised a self-administered Web-based survey aimed at CEOs and CFOs of all South African listed companies. The survey was validated by a pre-trail and data analysed by a statistician to ensure reliability.

Findings

The study revealed that listed companies, in a mandated regulatory regime implemented in a short period with reference to a highly prescriptive draft framework, attach value to the IR process primarily from the perspective of their corporate reputation, investor needs and stakeholder engagement and relations. This strengthens the business case for voluntary IR as a reporting regime. Advancement of corporate reputation appears to be a key motive to compile an integrated report, secondary to compliance as a primary motive. This indicates the perceived corporate legitimising effect of producing an integrated report. Furthermore, managers are more motivated by the legitimising aspect of advancing corporate reputation and stakeholder needs in compiling the integrated report than satisfying investor needs. This results in a disconnect between the perceived audience of the report by managers and the intended audience of the report as providers of capital as envisioned by the IIRC, which should be a matter for future consideration. Better resource allocation decisions and cost reductions are not indicated as an outcome of IR in the study. Furthermore, substantial changes to management information systems, with associated costs, would be required by companies to satisfy the requirements of the report content. The study revealed that the anticipated benefit of a company reconsidering its business model and encouraging sustainable product development is not perceived to be a material outcome in companies that implement IR, nor is assessing economic value creation and strategy considered a key motive for companies to compile an integrated report.

Research limitations/implications

Further validation of the survey by statistical methods in addition to the pre-trial of the survey was not considered viable by the statistician in view of the limited amount of data. This may be viewed as a potential limitation of the study. Statistical analysis must also be interpreted with caution given the limited amount of data available for analysis. Other limitations include the fact that certain industries are too heavily represented instead of there being a mix of industries representing the entire market listed on the JSE, and that a substantial proportion of the companies are large listed companies and Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) Constituents. As a result, the results may not be representative of the overall market listed on the JSE.

Practical implications

Managers are more motivated by the legitimising aspect of advancing corporate reputation and stakeholder needs in compiling the integrated report than satisfying investor needs, while the intended audience of the report in the framework is the providers of financial capital. This needs to be considered in the future development of regulations and frameworks. Furthermore, policymakers and regulators should exercise caution in the early stages of IR, when there is still a lack of evidence to support significant short-term changes in reconsidering the business model as well as sustainable product development that could be convincingly attributed to mandatory IR. It is, therefore, critical that policymakers, government and regulators strive towards creating a wider enabling environment to advance sustainable product development and sustainable business models. This can include establishing incentives to encourage the development of sustainable products, or other incentives that serve to align business objectives with national and global objectives and frameworks. Industry bodies can play a significant role in developing universal industry standards in this regard. Consideration should further be given to implementing regulatory mechanisms for advancing and possibly enforcing responsible investment practices as a measure to fully engage business in the critical shift towards sustainable business practices.

Originality/value

The study is significant from a global perspective because IR and integrated thinking form a new and globally developing concept and the potential benefits and expected outcomes from an organisational perspective thereof for companies are currently the subject of continued global debate. This study aims to provide valuable insights into and understanding of the perceived organisational benefits of implementing IR requirements, as well as serves to highlight the challenge areas experienced in South African companies by compliance with IR requirements. The study also contributes towards the debate of motives of managers for producing an integrated report and how this will affect future directions.
