Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the present study is to report the results of the laser treatment of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel surface and corrosion response of the treated surface that was carried out. Metallurgical and morphological changes in the laser-treated layer are also examined. Laser treatment of the alloy surface improves the surface properties; however, development of high thermal stress field in the treated layer can exceed the yielding limit of the alloy lowers, particularly, the corrosion resistance of the resulting surface.

Design/methodology/approach

Pre-prepared workpiece surfaces are laser-treated and electrochemically tested in an electrolytic solution. Corrosion rate of the resulting surface is analyzed and pit sites are examined.

Findings

It is found that the presence of nitride compounds and fine grains acts like as a self-protective layer at the laser-treated surface while lowering the corrosion resistance. Consequently, laser gas-assisted treatment provides a positive effect on the corrosion properties of the treated surface through lowering the corrosion current. The pits are shallow and do not form a regular pattern at the workpiece surface. The secondary pitting is prevented by the protective layer formed at the laser-treated surface.

Research limitations/implications

The study can be extended to include laser treatment including the hard particles, such as carbides, at the surface. However, this extension is left to another study.

Practical implications

Laser treatment can be used for protection of surfaces from wear and corrosive environments. The findings of this study give insight into the improvement of the surface characteristics for this purpose. It serves to industry for the practical solution of the surface protection from corrosive environments.

Social implications

The researchers and scientists working in the area get the benefit from the outcome of this work.

Originality/value

It is an original work and gives insight into the enhancement of the corrosion resistance of HSLA steel after the laser treatment process.

Abstract

Purpose

Laser additive manufacturing is widely utilized to fabricate the Ti6Al4V alloy, but it requires post-processing to improve its performance. This paper aims to propose laser peening (LP) as an effective way to improve the surface characteristics of the Ti6Al4V alloy fabricated by direct laser deposition (DLD).

Design/methodology/approach

Surface integrity including surface roughness, porosity, residual stress and microhardness are investigated in detail before and after LP treatment. Microstructure evolution is characterized by the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) to analyze crystal phase, grain boundary misorientation and texture.

Findings

Multiple overlapping layers of LP treatment result in slight influence on the polished surface of DLD-built samples. Porosity measured by the Archimedes test is found to be greatly decreased after LP treatment. Compressive residual stresses are significantly induced, the magnitude of which is greatly increased by increasing layers of LP treatment. And, local weakening or enhancement of residual stress in depth is observed because of pore and inclusion defects in the DLD-built Ti6Al4V alloy. Favorable hardness property can be obtained after multiple overlapping layers of LP treatment. EBSD analysis shows that LP treatment with multiple layers can introduce a large amount of lower-angle boundaries, indicating that dislocations beneath the top surface could induce a strain-hardened layer. The microtexture of the DLD-built Ti6Al4V alloy cannot be eliminated to decrease the anisotropy of the mechanical property.

Research limitations/implications

The variation of porosity observed after LP inside the DLD-built Ti-Al-4V is attractive but requires more detailed work to analyze the evolution of pore geometry.

Practical implications

Surface treatment of an additive manufactured titanium alloy was carried out to improve its fatigue resistance.

Originality/value

This work is original in proposing LP as an effective post process for the surface treatment of an additive manufactured titanium alloy through analyzing the surface integrity and microstructure evolution.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the efficiencies of argon (Ar), oxygen (O2) and O2 followed by Ar (O2→Ar) plasma treatments in terms of contaminant removal and wire bond interfacial adhesion improvement. The aim of this study is to resolve the “lifted ball bond” issue, which is one of the critical reliability checkpoints for light emitting diodes (LEDs) in automotive applications.

Design/methodology/approach

Ar, O2 and O2→Ar plasma treatments were applied to LED chip bond pad prior to wire bonding process with different treatment durations. Various surface characterization methods and contact angle measurement were then used to characterize the surface properties of these chip bond pads. To validate the improvements of Ar, O2 and O2→Ar plasma treatments to the wire bond interfacial adhesion, the chip bond pads were wire bonded and examined with a ball shear test. Moreover, the contact resistance of the wire bond interfaces was also measured by using four-point probe electrical measurements to complement the interfacial adhesion validation.

Findings

Surface characterization results show that O2→Ar plasma treatment was able to remove the contaminant while maintaining relatively low oxygen impurity content on the bond pad surface after the treatment and was more effective as compared with the O2 and Ar plasma treatments. However, O2→Ar plasma treatment also simultaneously reduced high-polarity bonds on the chip bond pad, leading to a lower surface free energy than that with the O2 plasma treatment. Ball shear test and contact resistance results showed that wire bond interfacial adhesion improvement after the O2→Ar plasma treatment is lower than that with the O2 plasma treatment, although it has the highest efficiency in surface contaminant removal.

Originality/value

To resolve “lifted ball bond” issue, optimization of plasma gas composition ratios and parameters for respective Ar and O2 plasma treatments has been widely reported in many literatures; however, the O2→Ar plasma treatment is still rarely focused. Moreover, the observation that wire bond interfacial adhesion improvement after O2→Ar plasma treatment is lower than that with the O2 plasma treatment although it has the highest efficiency in surface contaminant removal also has not been reported on similar studies elsewhere.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to intrinsic limitations, fused deposition modelling (FDM) products suffer from the bad surface finish and inaccurate dimensional accuracies restricting its usage in many applications. Hence, there is a need for processing polymer patterns before, during and after their productions. This paper aims to highlight the importance of pre- and post-processing treatments on the FDM-based acrylonitrile butadiene styrene patterns improving its surface quality so, that it can be used in rapid investment casting process for making medical implants and other high precision components.

Design/methodology/approach

As a part of pre-processing treatment, the machine parameters affecting the surface quality were identified and optimised using design of experiments. The patterns developed after the first stage of optimisation were given different post-processing treatments, which included vapour smoothening, chemical treatment and sand paper polishing. The results were compared and the best ones were used for making patterns for making medical implants via rapid investment casting technique. The surface quality was checked while the dimensional changes happening during the stages of this hybrid technique were recorded using a three-dimensional optical scanner.

Findings

The surface roughness of the FDM based ABS patterns reduced from 21.63 to 14.40 µm with pre-processing treatments. Chemical treatment (post-processing treatment) turned to be the most suitable technique for reducing the surface roughness further down to 0.30 µm. Medical implants that used these pre- and post-processing treatments gave an average surface roughness of 0.68 µm. Cost and lead time comparisons showed that rapid investment casting technique can be a better method for low volume, customised and with specific requirements.

Originality/value

FDM parts/medical implants produced by rapid investment casting technique suffer from the inferior surface finish and inaccurate dimensional accuracies limiting its applications. A systematic approach to overcome this issue is presented in this research paper. This will directly help the end users and the manufacturers of medical implants, wherein, better surface finish and dimensionally accurate components are expected.

Abstract

Purpose

The adhesion between electroless copper and a substrate is one of the most important factors in the reliability of thermoplastic printed circuit boards. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of mechanical grinding and acid etching of thermoplastic substrate materials on the adhesion of copper deposited by an electroless copper plating process. The base material of the test substrates was a new high temperature thermoplastic polyphenylene oxide (PPO) compound.

Design/methodology/approach

The effects of pre‐treatment on plastic surfaces are analyzed by the following methods: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), SEM, the Dyne surface energy test and the surface roughness test. The adhesion between electroless copper and thermoplastic substrate is measured with a peel strength test.

Findings

The results showed that mechanical grinding of the substrates significantly increased adhesion but the highest adhesion is gained by using an acid etch treatment before electroless plating. These results indicated that adhesion between copper and the substrates was not directly proportional to the roughness and surface energy values.

Originality/value

The conventional sweller/desmear treatment used in a printed circuit board factory for pre‐treating epoxy based laminates prior to electroless plating is not suitable for these PPO compound boards. The copper adhesion is adequate when the substrates are etched with sulphuric acid/chromate solution. In that case the bonding between the metal layer and the plastic surface is stronger than the bondings between the polymer chains of the thermoplastic material. The adhesion mechanism of electroless copper in these mechanically abraded samples is mechanical interlocking of metal particles.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to present the optimization of parameters and effects of annealing and vapor smoothing post-processing treatments on the surface roughness and tensile mechanical properties of fused deposition modeling (FDM) printed acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

Design/methodology/approach

Full-factorial test matrices were designed to determine the most effective treatment parameters for post-processing. The parameters for annealing were temperature and time, whereas the parameters for the vapor smoothing were volume of acetone and time. Analysis of surface roughness and tensile test results determined influences of the levels of parameters to find an ideal balance between mechanical properties and roughness.

Findings

Optimal parameters for vapor smoothing and annealing were determined. Vapor smoothing resulted in significantly higher improvements to surface roughness than annealing. Both treatments generally resulted in decreased mechanical properties. Of all treatments tested, annealing at 100 °C for 60 min provided the greatest benefit to tensile properties and vapor smoothing with 20 mL of acetone for 15 min provided the greatest benefit to surface roughness while balancing effects on properties.

Originality/value

Vapor smoothing and annealing of FDM ABS have typically been studied independently for their effects on surface roughness and material properties, respectively, with varying materials and manufacturing methods. This study objectively compares the effects of each treatment on both characteristics simultaneously to recommend ideal treatments for maximizing the balance between the final quality and performance of FDM components. The significance of the input variables for each treatment have also been analyzed. These findings should provide value to end-users of 3D printed components seeking to balance these critical aspects of manufacturing.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to report surface properties of treated Teonex Du Pont polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) foil substrates.

Design/methodology/approach

There were three different cleaning treatments among other: argon glow discharge, dipping into alkaline solution at 60°C as well as washing in an ultrasonic bath of acetone and ethyl alcohol in room temperature. The relation between PEN foil morphology and surface properties has been studied by contact angle measurements as well as evaluation of surface roughness of PEN foil samples by atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Findings

It was found that argon glow discharge (T3) of PEN treatment caused the maximum reduction in both values of contact angles. In addition, the argon glow discharge yielded the highest PEN surface energy (51.9 mJ/m2) and polarity (0.89). On the other hand, the AFM micrographs showed that the samples T3 had the highest value of average and root mean square surface roughness. Based on the experiments results, the authors stated that the alkaline cleaning (T2 treatment) could be considered as an effective method of PEN substrate treatment.

Originality/value

The influence of different cleaning treatment on the surface properties of PEN foil to inkjet application was analyzed. In the literature, there are not a lot of papers describing examinations of surface properties of PEN foil to inkjet application by contact angle measurements and AFM analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate surface treatments and fiber types on adhesion properties polylactic acid (PLA) three-dimensional (3D) parts printed on woven fabrics.

Design/methodology/approach

The cotton, flax and jute fabrics were exposed to alkali, hydrogen peroxide, stearic acid and ionic liquid treatments to modify surface characteristics before PLA 3D printing. The modification efficiency was assessed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. Then, fused deposition modeling (FDM) printer and PLA filament were used for 3D printing onto the untreated and treated fabrics. The adhesion strength between the fabrics and PLA 3D parts were tested according to DIN 53530 via universal tensile tester.

Findings

The fabric structure is effective on adhesion force and greater values were observed for plain weave fabrics. Maximum separation forces were obtained for alkali pretreated fabrics among jute and cotton. Hydrogen peroxide treatment also increased adhesion forces for jute and cotton fabrics while decreasing for flax fabrics. Stearic acid and ionic liquid treatments reduced adhesion forces compared to untreated fabrics. Treatments are effective to alter adhesion via changing surface chemistry, surface morphology and fabric physical properties but display different effects related to fabric material.

Originality/value

This study provides experimental information about effects of different fiber types and surface treatments on adhesion strength of PLA 3D parts. There is limited research about comprehensive observation on 3D printing on cellulosic-woven fabrics.

Abstract

Purpose

Gourd fibres (GF) are a natural biodegradable fibre material with excellent mechanical properties and high tensile strength. The use of natural fibres in composite materials has gained popularity in recent years due to their various advantages, including renewability, low cost, low density and biodegradability. Gourd fibre is one such natural fibre that has been identified as a potential reinforcement material for composites. However, it has low surface energy and hydrophobic nature, which makes it difficult to bond with matrix materials such as polyester. To overcome this problem, chemically adapted gourd fibre has been proposed as a solution. Chemical treatment is one of the most widely used methods to improve the properties of natural fibres. This research evaluates the feasibility and effectiveness of incorporating chemically adapted gourd fibre into polyester composites for industrial fabrication. The purpose of this study is to examine the application of chemically modified GF in the production of polyester composite engineering materials.

Design/methodology/approach

This work aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chemically adapted gourd fibre in improving the adhesion of gourd fibre with polyester resin in composite fabrication by varying the GF from 5 to 20 wt.%. The study involves the preparation of chemically treated gourd fibre through surface modification using sodium hydroxide (NaOH), permanganate (KMnO4) and acetic acid (CH3COOH) coupling agents. The mechanical properties of the modified fibre and composites were investigated. It was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to determine the changes in surface morphology and functional groups.

Findings

FTIR characterization showed that NaOH treatment caused cellulose depolymerization and caused a significant increase in the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, showing improved surface functional groups; KMnO4 treatment oxidized the fibre surface and caused the formation of surface oxide groups; and acetic acid treatment induced changes that primarily affected the ester and hydroxyl groups. SEM study showed that NaOH treatment changed the surface morphology of the gourd fibre, introduced voids and reduced hydrophilic tendencies. The tensile strength of the modified gourd fibres increased progressively as the concentration of the modification chemicals increased compared to the untreated fibres.

Originality/value

This work presents the designed composite with density, mechanical properties and microstructure, showing remarkable improvements in the engineering properties. An 181.5% improvement in tensile strength and a 56.63% increase in flexural strength were got over that of the unreinforced polyester. The findings from this work will contribute to the understanding of the potential of chemically adapted gourd fibre as a reinforcement material for composites and provide insights into the development of sustainable composite materials.

Abstract

Purpose

The surface energy of the printing material can be increased to desired levels with different chemicals or methods. However, the important thing is that the surface properties of printing material are not affected negatively. In this way the aim of this paper provide that the surface properties of matte and glossy coated paper is improved by the argon containing atmospheric pressure plasma device because the plasma treatment method does not occur surface damaging on the papers.

Design/methodology/approach

In experimental studies, test samples cut from 160 mm × 30 mm in size from 115 g/m2 gloss- and matt-coated papers were used. The plasma treatments of paper samples were carried out with an argon containing atmospheric pressure plasma device of laboratory scale that produces plasma of the corona discharge type at radio frequency. The optimized plasma parameters were at a frequency of 20 kHz and plasma power 200 W. A copper electrode of length 12 cm and diameter 2.5 mm was placed in the centre of the nozzle.

Findings

Research findings showed that the surface energies of the papers increased with the increase in plasma application time. While the contact angle of the untreated glossy paper is 82.2, 8 second plasma applied G3 sample showed 54 contact angle value. Similarly, the contact angle of the base paper of matt coated is 91.1, while M3 is reduced to 60.4 contact angles by the increasing plasma time.

Originality/value

Plasma treatment has shown that no chemical coating is needed to increase the wettability of the paper surface by reducing the contact angle between the paper and the water droplet. In addition, the surface energies of all papers treated by argon gas containing atmospheric pressure plasma, increased. Plasma treatment provides to improve both the wettability of the paper and the adhesion property required for the ink, with an environmentally friendly approach.
