Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to consider the problem of thermal destratification facing engineers and scientists during the motion of fluids which consist of rigid and randomly oriented particles suspended in a viscous medium under the influence of Lorentz force. This paper provides an insight into the non-linear transfer of thermal radiation within the boundary layer.

Design/methodology/approach

Similarity transformation and parameterization of the non-linear partial differential equation are carried out. The approximate analytical solution of the governing equation which models the free convective flow of strong and weak concentration of micro-elements in a micropolar fluid over a vertical surface is presented.

Findings

It is observed that the velocity and temperature distribution are decreasing properties of thermal stratification parameter St. Maximum local skin friction coefficients are ascertained at an epilimnion level (St=0) when the magnitude of thermal radiation is small. Thermal stratification parameter has no significant effect on the temperature distribution in the flow near a free stream.

Originality/value

The relationship between stratification of temperature and the transfer of thermal energy during the problem of thermal destratification facing engineers and scientist during the motion of fluids which consist of rigid and randomly oriented particles suspended in a viscous medium under the influence of Lorentz force is unravelled in this paper.

Abstract

Purpose

The modern day has seen an increase in the prevalence of the improvement of high-performance thermal systems for the enhancement of heat transmission. Numerous studies and research projects have been carried out to acquire an understanding of heat transport performance for their functional application to heat conveyance augmentation. The idea of this study is to inspect the entropy production in Darcy-Forchheimer Ree-Eyring nanofluid containing bioconvection flow toward a stretching surface is the topic of discussion in this paper. It is also important to take into account the influence of gravitational forces, double stratification, heat source–sink and thermal radiation. In light of the second rule of thermodynamics, a model of the generation of total entropy is presented.

Design/methodology/approach

Incorporating boundary layer assumptions allows one to derive the governing system of partial differential equations. The dimensional flow model is transformed into a non-dimensional representation by applying the appropriate transformations. To deal with dimensionless flow expressions, the built-in shooting method and the BVP4c code in the Matlab software are used. Graphical analysis is performed on the data to investigate the variation in velocity, temperature, concentration, motile microorganisms, Bejan number and entropy production concerning the involved parameters.

Findings

The authors have analytically assessed the impact of Darcy Forchheimer's flow of nanofluid due to a spinning disc with slip conditions and microorganisms. The modeled equations are reset into the non-dimensional form of ordinary differential equations. Which are further solved through the BVP4c approach. The results are presented in the form of tables and figures for velocity, mass, energy and motile microbe profiles. The key conclusions are: The rate of skin friction incessantly reduces with the variation of the Weissenberg number, porosity parameter and Forchheimer number. The rising values of the Prandtl number reduce the energy transmission rate while accelerating the mass transfer rate. Similarly, the effect of Nb (Brownian motion) enhances the energy and mass transfer rates. The rate of augments with the flourishing values of bioconvection Lewis and Peclet number. The factor of concentration of microorganisms is reported to have a diminishing effect on the profile. The velocity, energy and entropy generation enhance with the rising values of the Weissenberg number.

Originality/value

According to the findings of the study, a slip flow of Ree-Eyring nanofluid was observed in the presence of entropy production and heat sources/sinks. There are features when the implementations of Darcy–Forchheimer come into play. In addition to that, double stratification with chemical reaction characteristics is presented as a new feature. The flow was caused by the stretching sheet. It has been brought to people's attention that although there are some investigations accessible on the flow of Ree-Eyring nanofluid with double stratification, they are not presented. This research draws attention to a previously unexplored topic and demonstrates a successful attempt to construct a model with distinctive characteristics.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to examine the thermal transmission and entropy generation of hybrid nanofluid filled containers with solid body inside. The solid body is seen as being both isothermal and capable of producing heat. A time-dependent non-linear partial differential equation is used to represent the transfer of heat through a solid body. The current study’s objective is to investigate the key properties of nanoparticles, external forces and particular attention paid to the impact of hybrid nanoparticles on entropy formation. This investigation is useful for researchers studying in the area of cavity flows to know features of the flow structures and nature of hybrid nanofluid characteristics. In addition, a detailed entropy generation analysis has been performed to highlight possible regimes with minimal entropy generation rates. Hybrid nanofluid has been proven to have useful qualities, making it an attractive coolant for an electrical device. The findings would help scientists and engineers better understand how to analyse convective heat transmission and how to forecast better heat transfer rates in cutting-edge technological systems used in industries such as heat transportation, power generation, chemical production and passive cooling systems for electronic devices.

Design/methodology/approach

Thermal transmission and entropy generation of hybrid nanofluid are analysed within the enclosure. The domain of interest is a square chamber of size L, including a square solid block. The solid body is considered to be isothermal and generating heat. The flow driven by temperature gradient in the cavity is two-dimensional. The governing equations, formulated in dimensionless primitive variables with corresponding initial and boundary conditions, are worked out by using the finite volume technique with the SIMPLE algorithm on a uniformly staggered mesh. QUICK and central difference schemes were used to handle convective and diffusive elements. In-house code is developed using FORTRAN programming to visualize the isotherms, streamlines, heatlines and entropy contours, which are handled by Tecplot software. The influence of nanoparticles volume fraction, heat generation factor, external magnetic forces and an irreversibility ratio on energy transport and flow patterns is examined.

Findings

The results show that the hybrid nanoparticles concentration augments the thermal transmission and the entropy production increases also while the augmentation of temperature difference results in a diminution of entropy production. Finally, magnetic force has the significant impact on heat transfer, isotherms, streamlines and entropy. It has been observed that the external magnetic force plays a good role in thermal regulations.

Research limitations/implications

Hybrid nanofluid is a desirable coolant for an electrical device. Various nanoparticles and their combinations can be analysed. Ferro-copper hybrid nanofluid considered with the help of prevailing literature review. The research would benefit scientists and engineers by improving their comprehension of how to analyses convective heat transmission and forecast more accurate heat transfer rates in various fields.

Practical implications

Due to its helpful characteristics, ferrous-copper hybrid nanofluid is a desirable coolant for an electrical device. The research would benefit scientists and engineers by improving their comprehension of how to analyse convective heat transmission and forecast more accurate heat transfer rates in cutting-edge technological systems used in sectors like thermal transportation, cooling systems for electronic devices, etc.

Social implications

Entropy generation is used for an evaluation of the system’s performance, which is an indicator of optimal design. Hence, in recent times, it does a good engineering sense to draw attention to irreversibility under magnetic force, and it has an indispensable impact on investigation of electronic devices.

Originality/value

An efficient numerical technique has been developed to solve this problem. The originality of this work is to analyse convective energy transport and entropy generation in a chamber with internal block, which is capable of maintaining heat and producing heat. Effects of irreversibility ratio are scrutinized for the first time. Analysis of convective heat transfer and entropy production in an enclosure with internal isothermal/heat generating blocks gives the way to predict enhanced heat transfer rate and avoid the failure of advanced technical systems in industrial sectors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is a numerical analysis of transient natural convection in an inclined square cavity filled with an alumina-water nanofluid under the effects of sinusoidal wall temperature and thermal radiation by using a single-phase nanofluid model with empirical correlations for effective viscosity and thermal conductivity.

Design/methodology/approach

The domain of interest includes the nanofluid-filled cavity with a sinusoidal temperature distribution along the left vertical wall. Horizontal walls are supposed to be adiabatic, while right vertical wall is kept at constant low temperature. Temperature of left wall varies sinusoidally along y-coordinate. It is assumed in the analysis that the thermophysical properties of the fluid are independent of temperature and the flow is laminar. The governing equations have been discretized using the finite difference method with the uniform grid. Simulations have been carried out for different values of the Rayleigh number, cavity inclination angle, nanoparticles volume fraction and radiation parameter.

Findings

It has been found that a growth of radiation parameter leads to the heat transfer enhancement and convective flow intensification. At the same time, an inclusion of nanoparticles illustrates a reduction in the average Nusselt number and fluid flow rate.

Originality/value

The originality of this work is to analyze unsteady natural convection in a square cavity filled with a water-based nanofluid in the presence of a sinusoidal temperature distribution along one wall. The results would benefit scientists and engineers to become familiar with the analysis of convective heat and mass transfer in nanofluids and the way to predict the properties of nanofluid convective flow in advanced technical systems, in industrial sectors including transportation, power generation, chemical sectors, electronics, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

The use of natural ventilation by large openings to maintain thermal comfort conditions in the premises is a concept that is perfectly integrated into the traditional architecture of countries in the Mediterranean region or in tropical climates. In a temperate climate where the architecture is not usually designed to respond to the use of natural ventilation is seasonal and is done at the initiative of the occupants by making changes in the design of their doors. The European interest in natural ventilation, as a passive building air-conditioning technology, is increasing and has been the subject of a research program commissioned by the European Community. In this work, the authors consider a part of a housing compound as a refreshing floor. This floor is maintained at a constant cold temperature, the one vertical wall at hot temperature and other surfaces are adiabatic. Various scenarios are considered for this work. Mixed convection for different boundary conditions and different configurations is carried out. In addition, an airflow is injected through a window and extracted on the opposite window. Classical conclusion and transitional value on Richardson number have been completed by the new thermal configuration with nonsymmetric thermal conditions. The complex 3D flow structure is more obvious when one of the two flows (ventilation or natural convection) dominates. However, the induced heat transfer is less sensitive to the added ventilation. In this study, the authors consider a part of a housing compound as a refreshing floor. This floor is maintained at a constant cold temperature, the one vertical wall at hot temperature and other surfaces are adiabatic.

Design/methodology/approach

This is a qualitative preliminary study of a 2D–3D flow. The authors examine the competition between the natural convective flow and the added airflow on the flow structure and indoor air quality. The numerical model shows a good agreement with that obtained by researchers analytically and experimentally. To deal with turbulence, the RNG k-ε model has been adopted in this study.

Findings

The transfer is more sensitive between the 2D and 3D cases for the present analyzed case.

Originality/value

The study of ventilation efficiency has shown the competition between the big and small structures and the induced discomfort.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the novel aspects of activation energy in the nonlinearly convective flow of Walter-B nanofluid in view of Cattaneo–Christov double-diffusion model over a permeable stretched sheet. Features of nonlinear thermal radiation, dual stratification, non-uniform heat generation/absorption, MHD and binary chemical reaction are also evaluated for present flow problem. Walter-B nanomaterial model is employed to describe the significant slip mechanism of Brownian and thermophoresis diffusions. Generalized Fourier’s and Fick’s laws are examined through Cattaneo–Christov double-diffusion model. Modified Arrhenius formula for activation energy is also implemented.

Design/methodology/approach

Several techniques are employed for solving nonlinear differential equations. The authors have used a homotopy technique (HAM) for our nonlinear problem to get convergent solutions. The homotopy analysis method (HAM) is a semi-analytical technique to solve nonlinear coupled ordinary/partial differential equations. The capability of the HAM to naturally display convergence of the series solution is unusual in analytical and semi-analytic approaches to nonlinear partial differential equations. This analytical method has the following great advantages over other techniques:

  • It provides a series solution without depending upon small/large physical parameters and applicable for not only weakly but also strongly nonlinear problems.

  • It guarantees the convergence of series solutions for nonlinear problems.

  • It provides us a great choice to select the base function of the required solution and the corresponding auxiliary linear operator of the homotopy.

It provides a series solution without depending upon small/large physical parameters and applicable for not only weakly but also strongly nonlinear problems.

It guarantees the convergence of series solutions for nonlinear problems.

It provides us a great choice to select the base function of the required solution and the corresponding auxiliary linear operator of the homotopy.

Brief mathematical description of HAM technique (Liao, 2012; Mabood et al., 2016) is as follows. For a general nonlinear equation:

(1) N [ u ( x ) ] = 0 ,

where N denotes a nonlinear operator, x the independent variables and u(x) is an unknown function, respectively. By means of generalizing the traditional homotopy method, Liao (1992) creates the so-called zero-order deformation equation:

(2) ( 1 q ) L [ u ˆ ( x ; q ) u o ( x ) ] = q h H ( x ) N [ u ˆ ( x ; q ) ] ,

here q∈[0, 1] is the embedding parameter, H(x) ≠ 0 is an auxiliary function, h(≠ 0) is a nonzero parameter, L is an auxiliary linear operator, uo(x) is an initial guess of u(x) and u ˆ ( x ; q ) is an unknown function, respectively. It is significant that one has great freedom to choose auxiliary things in HAM. Noticeably, when q=0 and q=1, following holds:

(3) u ˆ ( x ; 0 ) = u o ( x ) and u ˆ ( x ; 1 ) = u ( x ) ,

Expanding u ˆ ( x ; q ) in Taylor series with respect to (q), we have:

(4) u ˆ ( x ; q ) = u o ( x ) + m = 1 u m ( x ) q m , where u m ( x ) = 1 m ! m u ˆ ( x ; q ) q m | q = 0 .

If the initial guess, the auxiliary linear operator, the auxiliary h and the auxiliary function are selected properly, then the series (4) converges at q=1, then we have:

(5) u ( x ) = u o ( x ) + m = 1 + u m ( x ) .

By defining a vector u = ( u o ( x ) , u 1 ( x ) , u 2 ( x ) , , u n ( x ) ) , and differentiating Equation (2) m-times with respect to (q) and then setting q=0, we obtain the mth-order deformation equation:

(6) L [ u ˆ m ( x ) χ m u m 1 ( x ) ] = h H ( x ) R m [ u m 1 ] ,

where:

(7) R m [ u m 1 ] = 1 ( m 1 ) ! m 1 N [ u ( x ; q ) ] q m 1 | q = 0 and χ m = | 0 m 1 1 m > 1 .

Applying L−1 on both sides of Equation (6), we get:

(8) u m ( x ) = χ m u m 1 ( x ) + h L 1 [ H ( x ) R m [ u m 1 ] ] .

In this way, we obtain um for m ⩾ 1, at mth-order, we have:

(9) u ( x ) = m = 1 M u m ( x ) .

Findings

It is evident from obtained results that the nanoparticle concentration field is directly proportional to the chemical reaction with activation energy. Additionally, both temperature and concentration distributions are declining functions of thermal and solutal stratification parameters (P1) and (P2), respectively. Moreover, temperature Θ(Ω1) enhances for greater values of Brownian motion parameter (Nb), non-uniform heat source/sink parameter (B1) and thermophoresis factor (Nt). Reverse behavior of concentration ϒ(Ω1) field is remarked in view of (Nb) and (Nt). Graphs and tables are also constructed to analyze the effect of different flow parameters on skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, Sherwood numbers, velocity, temperature and concentration fields.

Originality/value

The novelty of the present problem is to inspect the Arrhenius activation energy phenomena for viscoelastic Walter-B nanofluid model with additional features of nonlinear thermal radiation, non-uniform heat generation/absorption, nonlinear mixed convection, thermal and solutal stratification. The novel aspect of binary chemical reaction is analyzed to characterize the impact of activation energy in the presence of Cattaneo–Christov double-diffusion model. The mathematical model of Buongiorno is employed to incorporate Brownian motion and thermophoresis effects due to nanoparticles.

Abstract

Purpose

The main purpose of this numerical work is to study free convection of Casson fluid in a square differentially heated cavity taking into account the effects of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation.

Design/methodology/approach

The cavity is heated from the left vertical wall and cooled from the right vertical wall while horizontal walls are insulated. The governing partial differential equations invoking Rosseland approximation for thermal radiation with corresponding boundary conditions have been solved by finite difference method of the second-order accuracy using dimensionless variables stream function, vorticity and temperature. The governing parameters are Rayleigh number (Ra = 105), Prandtl number (Pr = 0.1, 0.7, 7.0), Casson parameter (γ = 0.1-5.0), radiation parameter (Rd = 0-10), Eckert number (Ec = 0-1.0).

Findings

It is found that an increase in Casson parameter leads to the heat transfer enhancement and fluid flow intensification. While a growth of Eckert number illustrates the heat transfer suppression.

Originality/value

The originality of this work is to analyze for the first-time natural convective fluid flow and heat transfer of a Casson fluid within a differentially heated square cavity under the effects of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation. The results would benefit scientists and engineers to become familiar with the flow behavior of such non-Newtonian fluids, and the way to predict the properties of this flow for possibility of using this specific fluid in various engineering and industrial processes, such as chyme movement in intestine, blood flows, lubrication processes with grease and heavy oils, glass blowing, electronic chips, food stuff, slurries, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

Mathematical and numerical models are developed to study the melting of a Phase Change Material (PCM) inside a 2D cavity. The bottom of the cell is heated at constant and uniform temperature or heat flux, assuming that the rest of the cavity is completely adiabatic. The paper used suitable numerical methods to follow the interface temporal evolution with a good accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to show how the evolution of the latent energy absorbed to melt the PCM depends on the temperature imposed on the lower wall of the cavity.

Design/methodology/approach

The problem is written with non-homogeneous boundary conditions. Momentum and energy equations are numerically solved in space by a spectral collocation method especially oriented to this situation. A Crank-Nicolson scheme permits the resolution in time.

Findings

The results clearly show the evolution of multicellular regime during the process of fusion and the kinetics of phase change depends on the boundary condition imposed on the bottom cell wall. Thus the charge and discharge processes in energy storage cells can be controlled by varying the temperature in the cell PCM. Substantial modifications of the thermal convective heat and mass transfer are highlighted during the transient regime. This model is particularly suitable to follow with a good accuracy the evolution of the solid/liquid interface in the process of storage/release energy.

Research limitations/implications

The time-dependent physical properties that induce non-linear coupled unsteady terms in Navier-Stokes and energy equations are not taken into account in the present model. The present model is actually extended to these coupled situations. This problem requires smoother geometries. One can try to palliate this disadvantage by constructing smoother approximations of non-smooth geometries. The augmentation of polynomials developments orders increases strongly the computing time. When the external heat flux or temperature imposed at the PCM is much greater than the temperature of the PCM fusion, one must choose carefully some data to assume the algorithms convergence.

Practical implications

Among the areas where this work can be used, are: buildings where the PCM are used in insulation and passive cooling; thermal energy storage, the PCM stores energy by changing phase, solid to liquid (fusion); cooling and transport of foodstuffs or pharmaceutical or medical sensitive products, the PCM is used in the food industry, pharmaceutical and medical, to minimize temperature variations of food, drug or sensitive materials; and the textile industry, PCM materials in the textile industry are used in microcapsules placed inside textile fibres. The PCM intervene to regulate heat transfer between the body and the outside.

Originality/value

The paper's originality is reflected in the precision of its results, due to the use of a high-accuracy numerical approximation based on collocation spectral methods, and the choice of Chebyshev polynomials basis in both axial and radial directions.
