Abstract
Purpose
To identify the impeders of strategy implementation in the higher education (HE) sector of Iran.
Design/methodology/approach
A structured questionnaire was distributed to the academic staff from Iranian Universities. The questionnaire consisted of closed and open questions. Data were gathered from the major universities in different regions of the country.
Findings
Major impeders towards strategy implementation in the HE sector of Iran are outlined and the nature of these impeders are explained and the relationships among them are explored.
Research limitations/implications
The research, through the use of the structured questionnaire, delivered a set of generic impeders; however a detailed picture of implementation of strategies needs further investigation.
Practical implications
Through the analysis of the most prevalent impeders, this paper informs Iranian academics about possibilities for change and improvement.
Originality/value
The case of the HE sector development in Iran is something rarely dealt with in the literature; hence the paper fills this gap. Moreover, we look closely at the growth of research activities as the main strategy and indicate the impeders of strategy implementation in the HE of Iran.

Abstract
Purpose
The paper aims to investigate organizational variables and develop their relationship with horizontal strategy. The cultural dimensions and organization structure have been considered as organizational variables. The study also aims to shed light on the implementation horizontal strategy in conglomerates.
Design/methodology/approach
A survey was carried out with 122 conglomerate firms for examination. These companies were chosen to be of different sizes and sectors. The multiple regression analysis was utilized to analyze the data.
Findings
The results reveal that conglomerate firms also have a horizontal strategy. Additionally, organizational cultural dimensions namely, collectivism, clan culture, market culture and long-term orientation; formal and informal relationship; and horizontal organization structure (HOS) have positive and significant relationship with horizontal strategy. No significant relationship was found between uncertainty avoidance and adhocracy culture, and horizontal strategy.
Research limitations/implications
The major contributions of this study are explicitly identified as horizontal strategy exists in the conglomerate firms where the few organizational variables play a significant role in horizontal strategy implementation.
Originality/value
This study has been done in an effort to make supporting guidelines to fill the gaps in conglomerate firms. This study offers an effective role of cultural dimensions and structure as drivers of horizontal strategy implementation, and this study spells out and extends the literature and proposes a conceptual framework.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidence regarding the relationship between the level of comprehensiveness of a performance measurement system (PMS) and its respective organizational effectiveness. The extant literature has highlighted that a PMS may successfully contribute to the implementation of the organizational strategy, with the balanced scorecard (BSC) serving as an exemplar of a strategy performance management tool and playing a primary role to this end. However, the reasons for the overall high rate of failure in the implementation of the BSC remain unexplained and, to date, little empirical research exists regarding the design of PMSs such as the BSC and its constituent elements.
Design/methodology/approach
Using a survey of 103 Italian managers, the paper advances a model describing a comprehensive BSC design, after identifying the key attributes from the performance management literature. Data were analyzed using cluster analysis and multiple regression analysis.
Findings
Results suggest that organizations are implementing the BSC following two different approaches, which vary from a less comprehensive to a more comprehensive design. More importantly, the BSC design explains variation across three organizational effectiveness measures: improvements in translating the organizational strategy into operational goals, understanding cause–effect relationships and enhancing internal communication among employees.
Originality/value
The paper builds on and extends the previous literature on performance management in two ways. First, via a literature review, it introduces a model describing a comprehensive BSC design, which includes 12 attributes. Second, it demonstrates that organizational effectiveness varies positively with the level of comprehensiveness of the BSC design.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to assess the moderation effect of organizational leadership on the relationship between service firm’s innovation strategy and organizational development. The study argues that in Ghana where power distance is high, organizational leadership provides the needed impetus for strategies such as innovation to achieve enhanced firm performance.
Design/methodology/approach
Data were collected from different service firms across Ghana for this study. A confirmatory factor analysis was used for construct reliability and validity checks. Robust regression estimations were then performed to test the hypothesized relationships.
Findings
The results show that both product innovation as strategy and organizational leadership are positively related to organizational development (i.e. financial and non-financial performance). It was also found that organizational leadership does not only serve as a predictor of strategy formulation but provides the necessary strategic fit between a firm’s strategy and business environment to achieve organizational development.
Originality/value
This study has shown that in high-power distance cultures, firms that are able to align their leadership orientation with their institutional environment are able to create a better fit between their strategic orientation and business environment in order to enhance organizational development.

Abstract
The just‐in‐time (JIT) production and inventory philosophy coupled with manufacturing automation in the form of computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) and its related facets are considered by many as great competitive weapons. The birth of JIT and its positive influence on the global strategic posture of Japanese firms is well‐documented. In the 1980s many US manufacturers regarded JIT manufacturing as a peculiar Japanese contrivance, suited only to the oriental culture. However, as more companies with ever more diverse manufacturing environments successfully applied its principles, manufacturers recognized its inherent wisdom. Today, most US manufacturers have come to regard JIT as vital to their survival. This study examines the problems associated with the implementation of JIT in manufacturing environments and attempts to identify hindering factors for its success. An implementation strategy is proposed so that the organization will achieve the benefits of JIT and ultimately improve its strategic posture.

Abstract
Purpose
Strategic planning and strategy implementation are proposed to impact overall performance. However, the purpose of this study is to empirically examine the mediating effect of organisational excellence on the relationship between strategic planning, strategy implementation and organisational performance (OP).
Design/methodology/approach
Hypotheses have been developed for testing using primary data obtained through a survey questionnaire. The data were gathered from the Dubai police organisation. Out of a total of 500 questionnaires, only 244 questionnaires were returned. For measurement and structural models, the structural equation modelling (SEM) approach was used to analyse the data.
Findings
All proposed hypotheses were supported and confirmed the positive and significant relationships between strategic planning, strategy implementation, organisational excellence and OP. Statistical findings using SEM-partial least square also confirmed the mediating role of organisational excellence as a mechanism between strategic planning, strategy implementation and OP.
Practical implications
Results discussed many valuable implications. The outcomes will help managers, decision-makers and practitioners to consider organisational excellence strategy when implementing strategic planning process to achieve the best performance.
Originality/value
The current study is one of the most important empirical studies to analyse and examine the relationships between strategic planning, strategy implementation organisational excellence and business performance. In addition, this study is one the rare studies that involve excellence as a practice when implementing strategic planning process.

Abstract
Purpose
This paper aims to investigate the moderation effect of customer orientation variable on the influence of professional competence toward the quality of strategy implementation.
Design/methodology/approach
This research is quantitative explanative associative, which is trying to explain the causality relationship between exogenous and endogenous variables. The research was conducted in the Shariah banking office in Central Java Province. The population of this research is all top and middle levels of Shariah Commercial Bank in Central Java region. The sampling technique used in this research is non-probability sampling, that is, purposive sampling, which is the method of determining the sample based on certain criteria and the research sample obtained is 113 respondents. The research approach used is quantitative with the analysis tool of Generalized Structure Component Analysis.
Findings
There is influence of professional competence variable and customer orientation on quality of implementation strategy. The higher the professional competence and customer orientation, the higher the quality of strategy implementation. It is also found that customer orientation moderates the influence of professional competence variables, which are quasi-moderating and reinforcing.
Originality/value
This research has two sources of problems, which are research gap and business phenomenon. Research on Drucker’s business purpose (1954) is realized when a firm identifies the relationship between strategic methods and its ability to generate profits. This research attempts to solve the problem or gap between market orientation and business performance, which has been widely researched by marketing experts, but still shows controversial results. In this research, the researcher takes the definition of Narver and Slater (1990) to examine market orientation because the mostly found empirical research on market orientation and innovation (Han, et.al. 1998; Subin and Workman, 2004; Ferrel and Luke, 2000) has used this conceptualization and its associated operations. Therefore, to compare and distinguish the results of this research with the results of previous research, this research uses the definition of Narver and Slater (1990). No previous study has comprehensively studied the moderating effects of customer orientation on the relation between profesional competence toward quality of strategy implementation, especially in a commercial bank in Central Java region.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to identify what are the main causes that lead strategies to decline at execution phase.
Design/methodology/approach
The paper adopted the strategy of survey with the 69 Brazilian businessmen. The questionnaire was developed from 16 causes pointed out in the literature and the results analyzed using Cronbach’s α coefficient, multidimensional scaling, exploratory factor analysis and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Findings
The results of statistical analysis showed that the main causes are primarily associated to leaders’ defaults during execution strategies, lack of support and feedback of senior management, no involvement of the teams during the strategies formulation, failure of communication on the strategic objectives in all organizational levels, and others.
Research limitations/implications
The 69 businessmen work in different sectors and there may be specific causes for each sector. The research presented by this paper did not have objectives to analyze specific sectors of the economy.
Practical implications
The results are extremely important and useful for managers during the implementation phase of the strategies and researchers in the field of business strategies.
Originality/value
There are no research with the same focus and objective presented by this paper about Brazilian companies.

Purpose
The purpose of this study is to review the hospitality and tourism strategy literature to identify trends related to key topical areas of research. The study objectives include identifying hospitality and tourism strategy challenges; presenting a synthesis of frequent strategy topics; and identifying opportunities for future research.
Design/methodology/approach
Earlier studies in the hospitality strategy literature were reviewed and synthesized to identify trends, gaps and opportunities.
Findings
Hospitality strategy research continues to improve and extend the boundaries of strategic thought in the hospitality literature. In assessing the literature from 1980 to 2013, it was apparent that the literature was following the mainstream trend of combining theoretical perspectives to some degree as well as applying more process-based concepts to hospitality strategy research. There were several challenges for propelling hospitality strategy research forward; these included the educational infrastructure, theory development and the quantity and quality of researchers in the field.
Research limitations/implications
Given the depth and breadth of the strategy topics and research, it was difficult to ensure sufficient coverage was provided in the limited space of one journal article.
Originality/value
The study provides a good foundational understanding of where the hospitality strategy research had been and the trajectory of where it was headed. Further, it serves as a valuable resource for current researchers and those entering this area of research.
