Abstract

Purpose

This paper contrasts research streams in corporate brand management (CBM) with perspectives on corporate strategy (CS). The aim is to examine whether CBM research is as diverse as research on CS and to identify potentially new research perspectives within CBM.

Design/methodology/approach

First, the main dimensions to capture approaches and directions in general strategy research are carved out and integrated into a framework for subsequent analysis (strategy descriptor cube). Second, research streams within CBM are clustered into predominating schools. Third, the framework is then used to classify the identified schools, allowing further evaluation. In doing so, an innovative view on the status of and developments in CBM research is provided.

Findings

Most schools of CBM are built on rational and prescriptive approaches, while political and emergent conceptions are hardly addressed. Thus, from the strategy-derived dimensions, approaches to CBM are surprisingly homogenous, with only one school diverging from the dominating pattern. A variety of perspectives as found in strategy research cannot be validated for CBM. Alternative conceptualizations to CBM in terms of assumptions about the genesis of strategic directions and the perspective of analysis might provide impetus for progress in CBM research.

Research limitations/implications

The question arises why emergent and political perspectives have not been seriously pursued in the past decades of brand research. Researchers might seize opportunities to be further stimulated from the many faceted research approaches in CS. Further dimensions for description, as well as alternative clusterings of CBM schools, should be discussed.

Practical implications

A broadening of perspectives, including potentially a more attentive reception of agile trends in CBM, might become increasingly relevant for CBM practitioners. As new realities shape the present and future of corporate brand building, new paradigms should be explored and tested.

Originality/value

The corporate brand strategy link is evidently important; however, to date, few papers have such a focus. This is the first paper to apply reasoning and perspectives that have contributed to significant developments in CS research to the current situation in CBM research. It introduces a novel way to analyze and discuss developments between and within CBM schools.

Purpose

The spatial feature is important for scene saliency detection. Scene-based visual saliency detection methods fail to incorporate 3D scene spatial aspects. This paper aims to propose a cube-based method to improve saliency detection through integrating visual and spatial features in 3D scenes.

Design/methodology/approach

In the presented approach, a multiscale cube pyramid is used to organize the 3D image scene and mesh model. Each 3D cube in this pyramid represents a space unit similar to a pixel in the image saliency model multiscale image pyramid. In each 3D cube color, intensity and orientation features are extracted from the image and a quantitative concave–convex descriptor is extracted from the 3D space. A Gaussian filter is then used on this pyramid of cubes with an extended center-surround difference introduced to compute the cube-based 3D scene saliency.

Findings

The precision-recall rate and receiver operating characteristic curve is used to evaluate the method and other state-of-art methods. The results show that the method used is better than traditional image-based methods, especially for 3D scenes.

Originality/value

This paper presents a method that improves the image-based visual saliency model.

Abstract

Introduces the Fuzzy Industry Maturity Grid as an extension of the Industry Maturity Grid for diagnosing an industry, to identify fast‐growing sectors and to map out growth strategies for sectors showing signs of maturity. By incorporating fuzzy set theory and aggregation models in decision making, the conventional Industry Maturity Grid is enhanced from a qualitative analysis to a semi‐quantitative method which captures an expert′s knowledge of the industry, inclusive of his judgement. It does this via using a linguistic scale describing the characteristics under each of the three main dimensions of the IMG to form fuzzy sets; a hierarchical aggregation of information based on fuzzy aggregation operators; and a conceptual cube to determine the rank and ranking size of the prescribed strategies. Illustrates the application of the Fuzzy Industry Maturity Grid with an example on the Singapore banking industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to clarify the relationship between mechanical behaviors and the underlying geometry of periodic cellular structures. Particularly, the answer to the following research question is investigated: Can seemingly different geometries of the repeating unit cells of periodic cellular structure result in similar functional behaviors? The study aims to cluster the geometry-functional behavior relationship into different categories.

Design/methodology/approach

Specifically, the effects of the geometry on the compressive deformation (mechanical behavior) responses of multiple standardized cubic periodic cellular structures (CPCS) at macro scales are investigated through both physical tests and finite element simulations of three-dimensional (3D) printed samples. Additionally, these multiple CPCS can be further nested into the shell of 3D models of various mechanical domain parts to demonstrate the influence of their geometries in practical applications.

Findings

The paper provides insights into how different CPCS (geometrically different unit cells) influence their compressive deformation behaviors. It suggests a standardized strategy for comparing mechanical behaviors of different CPCS.

Originality/value

This paper is the first work in the research domain to investigate if seemingly different geometries of the underlying unit cell can result in similar mechanical behaviors. It also fulfills the need to infill and lattify real functional parts with geometrically complex unit cells. Existing work mainly focused on simple shapes such as basic trusses or cubes with spherical holes.

Abstract

Purpose

The objective of the paper is to provide an understanding of how large organisations develop line extensions of their brands and to present guidelines for management when considering an upscale line extension.

Design/methodology/approach

A qualitative research technique was used in this study. It involved case study research in the beverage industry, where 11 senior marketers were interviewed in depth.

Findings

A line extension into premium categories was seen to be an effective strategy to revitalise a brand. Respondents also stated that the line extension needs to be very closely linked to the core brand. Being an early entrant but not first‐to‐market or late‐to‐market was also important.

Originality/value

Guidelines to management are provided and a framework is developed for using upscale line extensions in brand revitalization strategies. Marketing managers have been given a three‐step approach to line extension management.

Abstract

Purpose

With the development of the modern portfolio theory and the advancement of information technology, the employment of quantitative approaches to practically measure asset risks and returns, and the construction of portfolios (even dynamic portfolios) has become possible and popular. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to construct a multi‐factor model for Taiwan stock universe using fundamental technical descriptors and then to apply the equity market neutral investing using multiple‐factor models as a tool.

Design/methodology/approach

This study constructs a Taiwan equity multi‐factor model using cross‐sectional fundamental technical approach.

Findings

The model involves 28 explanatory factors (including 20 industry factors), and the results of the estimations are satisfactory. The model's explanatory power is 58.6 per cent on average. Furthermore, this multi‐factor model is feasible, modulized, dynamic (i.e. modified over time) and updating.

Originality/value

The multi‐factor model, constructed and utilized in this study, is a useful and feasible tool. It generates important inputs into the applications of building market neutral portfolio.

Purpose

Taiwan OTC market is an electronic, order driven, call market. The purpose of this paper is to gain understanding of whether trade size or number of transaction provides more information on explaining price volatility and market liquidity in this market. The paper also aims to investigate how market condition can affect the relationship between information type and trading activities.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper uses data from the Taiwan OTC market to run the empirical tests. It divides firms into five size groups based on their market capitalization. Regression equations are run to test: whether number of transactions has a more significant impact on price volatility on the Taiwan OTC market; the impact of market information on number of transactions; the relative impact of firm specific and market information on number of transactions; and the impact of number of transaction of bid‐ask spread.

Findings

Findings show that the larger the number of transactions, the higher the price volatility. Smaller firms on the Taiwan OTC market are traded based on firm‐specific information. This relation is further affected by market trends. Especially for the larger firms, when the market is up and the amount of market information increases, number of transactions increases. When the market is down and the amount of market information increases, number of transactions decreases. Finally, it is found spread size is more likely to be influenced by number of transactions, instead of trade size. Overall, based on these empirical results, the information content of number of transactions seems to be higher than that of trade size in the Taiwan OTC market.

Practical implications

Investors now understand that number of transaction actually carry more information than trade size does.

Originality/value

The relation between market information and number of transaction, also that between market information and trade size is influenced by market condition. The paper fills a gap in the literature to show that market condition has an impact on the relation between information type and trader's behavior. A number of transactions are identified that provide more information than trade size does. It is also shown that market conditions can further affect the impact of information on trading activities.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present weighted Euclidean distance for measuring whether the fitting of projective transformation matrix is more reliable in feature-based image stitching.

Design/methodology/approach

The hybrid model of weighted Euclidean distance criterion and intelligent chaotic genetic algorithm (CGA) is established to achieve a more accurate matrix in image stitching. Feature-based image stitching is used in this paper for it can handle non-affine situations. Scale invariant feature transform is applied to extract the key points, and the false points are excluded using random sampling consistency (RANSAC) algorithm.

Findings

This work improved GA by combination with chaos's ergodicity, so that it can be applied to search a better solution on the basis of the matrix solved by Levenberg-Marquardt. The addition of an external loop in RANSAC can help obtain more accurate matrix with large probability. Series of experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed approaches.

Practical implications

The modified feature-based method proposed in this paper can be easily applied to practice and can obtain a better image stitching performance with a good robustness.

Originality/value

A hybrid model of weighted Euclidean distance criterion and CGA is proposed for optimization of projective transformation matrix in image stitching. The authors introduce chaos theory into GA to modify its search strategy.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to improve the retrieval results of hyperspectral image by integrating both spectral and textural features. For this purpose, an improved multiscale opponent representation for hyperspectral texture is proposed to represent the spatial information of the hyperspectral scene.

Design/methodology/approach

In the presented approach, end-member signatures are extracted as spectral features by means of the widely used end-member induction algorithm N-FINDR, and the improved multiscale opponent representation is extracted from the first three principal components of the hyperspectral data based on Gabor filters. Then, the combination similarity between query image and other images in the database is calculated, and the first k more similar images are returned in descending order of the combination similarity.

Findings

Some experiments are calculated using the airborne hyperspectral data of Washington DC Mall. According to the experimental results, the proposed method improves the retrieval results, especially for image categories that have regular textural structures.

Originality/value

The paper presents an effective retrieval method for hyperspectral images.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study was to first establish foundational algebraic expressions that parametrically describe any advanced dual-energy storage–propulsion–power system (DESPPS) and then proceed to declare the array of fundamental independent variables necessary for the sizing and optimisation of such systems. Upon procurement of a pre-design-level integrated aircraft performance model and the subsequent verification against previously published high-end low-fidelity generated results, opportunity was taken in formulating a set of battery-based DESPPS related design axioms and sizing heuristics.

Design/methodology/approach

Derivation of algebraic expressions related to describing DESPPS architectures are based on first principles. Integrated performance modelling by way of full analytical fractional change transformations anchored according to a previously published Energy Specific Air Range (ESAR) figure-of-merit originally derived using the Breguet–Coffin differential equation for vehicular efficiency. Weights prediction of sub-systems that constitute the entire aircraft including DESPPS constituents emphasises an analytical foundation with minimal implementation of linear correlation factors or coefficients of proportionality. An iterative maximum take-off weight build-up algorithm emphasising expedient and stable convergence was fashioned. All prediction methods pertaining to integrated performance were verified according to previously published battery-based DESPPS results utilising high-end low-fidelity methods.

Findings

For all types of DESPPS, two new fundamental independent non-dimensional variables were declared: the Supplied Power Ratio (related to converted power afforded by each energy carrier); and, the Activation Ratio (describing the relative nature of utilisation with respect to time afforded by the motive power device associated with each energy source). For a given set of standalone sub-system energy conversion efficiencies, the parametric descriptor of degree-of-hybridisation (DoH) for Power was found to be solely a function of the Supplied Power Ratio, whereas in contrast, the DoH for Energy was found to be a more complex synthetic function described by comingling of Supplied Power Ratio and the Activation Ratio. Upon examination of the integrated aircraft performance model derived in this treatise, for purposes of investigating CO2-emissions reduction potential for battery-based DESPPS using kerosene as one of the energy sources, one salient observation was maximising the ESAR figure-of-merit is not an appropriate objective or intermediary function for future optimisation work. It was found maximising block fuel reduction through the use of maximum ESAR would lead to ever diminishing design ranges and curtailment of the payload-range working capacity of the aircraft.

Practical implications

Opportunity is now given to design and optimise aircraft utilising any type of DESPPS architecture. It was established that designing for battery-based DESPPS aircraft can be achieved effectively in a two-stage process that may not require aircraft morphologies more exotic than the so-called “wing-and-tube”. Firstly, a suitably projected state-of-the-art aircraft with solely advanced gas-turbine technology for the propulsion and power system needs to be produced. Thereafter, a revised version of this baseline projected aircraft now using DESPPS architecture should be conceived. A recommendation related to CO2-emissions reduction potential for battery-based DESPPS using kerosene as one of the energy sources is that during optimisation work the multi-objective formulation should comprise at least two functions: block fuel and operating economics. In all instances, it was advised that the objective function of block fuel should be tempered by an equality constraint of ESAR parity with the baseline projected aircraft using gas-turbine only technology.

Originality/value

A complete, unified analytical description of DESPPS that is universally applicable to any type of energy carrier has been derived and verified for battery-based dual-energy systems. Correspondingly, a set of aircraft design axioms and sizing heuristics relevant to battery-based DESPPS have been presented.
