The paper seeks to examine age and exposure to computers as determinants of librarians’ attitudes towards library automation in Nigerian universities.

The paper uses a survey approach to determine the attitudes of academic librarians in Nigeria.

The investigation shows that an overwhelming majority of the librarians registered a high and positive attitude towards library automation. However, the two variables of interest to this study were found not to influence the librarians’ attitudes towards library automation. Also, several university libraries in Nigeria are yet to be automated due to some identified impediments like: financial constraints, shortage of IT personnel, irregular electric power supply, poor communication facilities, and absence of a national policy on information technology.

Generally librarians, system administrators, university authorities, IT researchers, and the National Universities Commission of Nigeria will find this paper useful. It enlightens them about the librarians’ positive attitudes towards library automation, poor state of automation in the libraries, as well as the lack of relationship between attitude of librarians and the two variables of interest to this study.

The paper offers new insights in the area of IT use by academic librarians in Nigeria. This study differs from others because it established that, even though the librarians registered a positive attitude towards library automation, their age and exposure to computers do not determine such an attitude.

The study aims to examine the role of information technology in Local Government Administration in Delta State, using Aniocha North and Aniocha South Local Government Areas as the case study.

The study population comprised 55 respondents from seven higher institutions in the South‐South Geo‐Political Zone of Nigeria.

Quick and easy access to information is facilitated by information and communication technologies. The essence of the training programme is to enable the participants to make effective use of ICT. There are problems inherent in an intense programme such as this where participants probably had difficulty absorbing information before moving on to the next module or course. An ambitious project this was but intensity may have been overwhelming.

Many things contribute to the success of the programme as well as to the weaknesses. Surveying participants helps to revise the programme for subsequent training and make improvements.

Training is badly needed and this kind of experience confirms and justifies the need. This write‐up builds on the logistics more than the curriculum content and that too contributes to the success and limitations of such a programme.

The paper seeks to examine the health risks faced when using computer‐based systems by library staff in Nigerian libraries.

The paper uses a survey research approach to carry out this investigation.

The investigation reveals that the perceived health risk does not predict perceived ease of use of computer‐based libraries. Even though a wide range of health hazards were identified in the libraries, the level of availability of ergonomic programmes to tackle them was low.

In general, librarians, university authorities, IT policy formulators and systems administrators should find this paper useful, as it educates them about the fact that perceived health risk does not significantly deter people from using information systems. This is due to the enormous benefits arising from the use of IT when compared with the manual systems.

The paper takes a look at Management use of Records in Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. The importance of records and records management programmes was given. Other issues that were investigated include: the components of records management in operation, maintenance and use of records, storage and security of records for effective use, records disposition schedule, and the strength and qualification of the records management personnel. The paper concludes that the management staff of Delta State University, Abraka, see records as indispensable tools in planning, decision making and implementation. Over the years, the authorities of the University have therefore created, maintained and used numerous records. Certain problems which hamper the effective use of records by management in the University were identified as: lack of clear‐cut records management standard, inadequate professional records management personnel, non‐availability of automatic security/protection system and erratic electric power supply. In order to eradicate or overcome these setbacks, the researcher has made some far‐reaching recommendations.
