Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to analyze the dynamic monitoring of deformation damage of steel structure buildings in long-term use. Although the steel structure building has the advantage of high structural strength, it will be deformed after being affected by factors such as corrosion and impact during long-term use, and which will affect building safety, especially the public building facilities. The dynamic monitoring of its security is an indispensable means.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper briefly introduced the principle of building information modeling (BIM)-based steel structure building information monitoring and the dynamic information monitoring system based on this principle. Then the monitoring system was used to analyze an operational steel structure suspension bridge in Xinxiang City, Henan Province, China, and compared it with the monitoring system based on back propagation (BP) neural network.

Findings

The results showed that the fitting degree of the dynamic deformation displacement data processed by BIM-based monitoring system was higher than that processed by BP-based monitoring system. Based on the comprehensive comparison of the dynamic data of all monitoring points, the BIM-based monitoring system had higher accuracy of deformation displacement monitoring and reliability of structural safety evaluation.

Originality/value

In summary, the BIM-based steel structure building monitoring system can effectively monitor the dynamic information of steel structure information.

Abstract

Purpose

The main supporting frame of steel structure buildings is steel, and the beam-column joints of the steel structure directly affect the stability and strength of the supporting frame.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper briefly introduced the beam-column joints which are used for ensuring the stability of buildings in the steel structure building, selected the fabricated beam-column joints which were different from the traditional welding methods, tested the fabricated beam-column joints with the reaction frame and jack and detected the influence of the thickness and length of the splice plate on the mechanical properties of joints.

Findings

The results showed that the joint stress and the displacement in the vertical direction increased under greater load no matter which kind of fabricated joint was used; under the same load, the thickness and length of the splice significantly affected the mechanical properties of joints, and the larger the thickness and length, the smaller the joint stress and displacement in the vertical direction.

Originality/value

To sum up, increasing the thickness or length of the splice plate of the fabricated joint can effectively improve the mechanical properties of joints.

Abstract

Purpose

Airports are booming in China, to enlarge their capacities and stimulate economic development. Large-span spatial steel structures are commonly used in the terminal buildings of airport projects. Their advantages include prefabrication, strength, usability, adaptability and aesthetic quality. To manage large-span spatial steel structure projects, building information modeling (BIM) is recommended. Although there are plenty of studies on BIM application in steel structure projects, it is still rare to apply BIM to optimize the schedule and cost of steel structures, especially for airport projects.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper aims to develop a framework in which BIM and a time-cost optimization model are integrated to optimize construction costs and the duration of large-span spatial steel structure projects. A real case study was conducted to verify the feasibility of the BIM-based time-cost optimization model in an airport terminal building, which was built with a large-span spatial steel structure.

Findings

The results preliminarily support the reliability of the proposed BIM-based time-cost optimization model. The BIM-based time-cost optimization model will benefit construction planning for professionals and enrich relevant research on the application of BIM in large-span spatial steel structure projects.

Originality/value

The steel structure is difficult to control budgets and progress. This paper is expected to be adopted for optimizing the time and cost plans for projects involving steel structures in airport terminal buildings.

Abstract

Purpose

It is common practice in structural engineering to assume floor diaphragms infinitely stiff in their own plane. But, most of the code provisions lack clarity and unity in categorising floor diaphragms and discussing their behaviour based on the seismic response of the structures. Besides, although many of these code provisions have presented simple techniques and formulations for determining the level of flexibility in floor diaphragms, the implementation of these techniques on more complex floor systems such as the steel-deck composite floors is still under question. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, an equivalent concrete floor is employed as a representative of in-plane diaphragm action of steel-deck composite floor, using simple modelling techniques in SAP2000 and the results are validated by complex structural models developed in ABAQUS. Afterwards, the equivalent floor is inserted to 3, 5 and 7 storey steel structures with 2, 3 and 5 plan aspect ratios in two categories of structures with rigid diaphragms and analogous structures with flexible diaphragms and the responses are compared to each other.

Findings

The results show that the proposed technique is an effective method for evaluating the diaphragm action of steel-deck composite floors. Additionally, it is concluded that, the boundary values of plan aspect ratio equal to 3 and λ coefficient equal to 0.5 in steel-deck composite floors, mentioned in code provisions for categorising diaphragms, are not always conservative and need to be scrutinised.

Originality/value

The proposed methodology provides simple framework for assessing the effects of in-plane flexibility of steel-deck composite on seismic response of steel structures.

Abstract

Purpose

Special shaped columns composed of concrete-filled square steel tubes have broad application prospects in steel structure residential buildings. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the thermal bridge problem of special-shaped column structures is studied, T-shaped column composed of concrete-filled square steel tubes is taken as an example, the finite element thermal bridge model is established by ANSYS software, the heat treatment is calculated by the software and the results are output.

Findings

According to the finite element results, it can be found that in the thermal bridge model, the temperature distribution is uniform, the heat flux density is small and the heat dissipation where the steel plate locates is serious. The lowest temperature of the thermal bridge is greater than the air condensation temperature, and the affected area is about 0.2 m, which is larger than the thickness of the wall and will not cause too much impact on the wall. It will help to suppress heat dissipation and achieve energy-saving and heat preservation inside the buildings.

Originality/value

The experimental results prove the effectiveness of the special-shaped column structure for building energy-saving buildings. This study provides some theoretical basis for further application of special-shaped column structures in architecture.

Purpose

This paper aims to model the performances of frames structures by comparing the predictions of ordinary control concrete (CC) and concretes reinforced by fibers. Two types of steel fibers were used in this work, industrial steel fibers (ISF) and tire-reclaimed fibers obtained by cutting virgin steel tire-cord to 50 mm, noticed virgin steel fibers (VSF). In total, 3% of VSF are used. The results obtained in this paper clearly show the contribution of fibers in improving the global and local behavior of the frames structures. VSF gives the same or better overall behavior as the use of industrial fibers for the same percentage of fibers, with the advantage that VSF contributes to the protection of the environment and limit the wastage of steel.

Design/methodology/approach

This work was carried out using the commercial finite element code Abaqus/Explicit. The behavior of the different concretes used in this study was modeled by the concrete damage plasticity (CDP) constitutive law. The methodology adopted to complete this work consisted in identifying, by calibration of the available experimental results with the numerical predictions, the parameters of the corresponding CDP model for each of the concretes used in this work. To this end, the authors have successively identified the CDP parameters for the CC-V (control concrete used by Vecchio and Emara, 1992) used in frame structure (R + 1). Subsequently, the CDP parameters of the CC-T (control concrete used by Tlemat, 2004), the CVSF (concrete with virgin steel fibers) and the CISF-1 (concrete with industrial steel fibers type 1, ISF-1) are identified using the experimental results of beams under bending tests. Once the model parameters were determined for each concrete, the authors conducted a series of simulations to show the benefit of introducing claimed and industrial fibers in frame structure (R + 1) and (R + 2). This approach recommends the use of concrete reinforced with steel fibers, mainly 6% by mass of VSF and ISF-1, in place of ordinary concrete in new construction to increase the resistance of structures and contribute, if applicable, to the protection of the environment.

Findings

The main findings of this study can be summarized by: the strength and ductility of the frames structures made of concrete fiber are significantly increased. The use of tire-reclaimed steel fibers (VSF) gives the same or better overall behavior as the use of industrial fibers. In addition to their good mechanical contribution, the tire-reclaimed fibers contribute to the protection of the environment and limit the wastage of steel. The use of fibers reduces the cracking zones in concrete fiber frames structures. The usefulness of distinguishing the interstory displacement limits set by codes, in particular, uniform building code (UBC-97), for ordinary concretes and concrete reinforced with fibers is addressed.

Originality/value

The contribution of tire-reclaimed and industrial fibers on the strength and ductility of reinforced concrete-frames structures is addressed. The use of tire-reclaimed steel fibers gives the same or better overall behavior as the use of industrial fibers, the tire-reclaimed fibers having the advantage of contributing to the protection of the environment and limiting the wastage of steel. The paper also points to the usefulness of distinguishing the interstory displacement limits set by codes, in particular UBC-97, for ordinary concrete and concrete reinforced with fibers, in accordance to the predictions of the capacity curves.

Abstract

Purpose

Nowadays, residential buildings have become increasingly important due to the growing communities. The purpose of this study is to investigate the behavior of a steel structural framing system that incorporates lightweight load-bearing walls and slabs, and to compare the weight of materials used in cold-formed and hot-finished steel structural systems for affordable housing.

Design/methodology/approach

Four types of models consisting of 243 members were simulated. Model 1 is a cold-formed steel structural framing system, while Model 2 is a hot-finished steel structural framing system. Both Models 1 and 2 use lightweight wall panels and lightweight composite slabs. Models 3 and 4 are made with brick walls and precast reinforced concrete systems, respectively. These structures use different wall and slab materials, namely, brick walls and precast reinforced concrete. The analysis includes bending behavior, buckling resistance, shear resistance and torsional rotation analysis.

Findings

This study found that using thinner steel sections can increase the deflection value. Meanwhile, increasing member length and the ratio of slenderness will decrease buckling resistance. As the applied load increases, buckling deformation also increases. Furthermore, decreasing shear area causes a reduction in shear resistance. Thicker sections and the use of lightweight materials can decrease the torsional rotation value.

Originality/value

The weight comparison of the steel structures shows that Model 1, which is a cold-formed steel structure with lightweight wall panels and lightweight composite slabs, is the most suitable model due to its lightweight and affordability for housing. This model can also be used as a reference for the optimal design of modular structural framing using cold-formed steel materials in the field of civil engineering and as a promotional tool.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to reduce the impact of bridge construction on traffic under the bridge, the construction of bridges for some important traffic nodes usually adopts the swivel construction method. The spherical hinge is a rotating mechanism located between the bottom of the pier and the bridge cap, and is subjected to tremendous vertical pressure. According to the mechanical characteristics of the spherical hinges, this paper applies the ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) material to the spherical hinge. The spherical hinge is subjected to a compression test to test its mechanical behavior. This paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to test the mechanical behavior of the UHPC spherical hinge, multiple sets of 100 mm UHPC spherical hinge specimens were prefabricated. Through the universal testing machine to measure the compressive strength of specimens, draw the force-displacement curve to analyze the failure mechanism and establish the stress calculation formula of the spherical hinge at each point along the radial direction.

Findings

Through the test, the compressive strength of UHPC spherical hinge is obtained, and the influencing factors of UHPC spherical hinge strength are found: reducing water–cement ratio, increasing steel fiber content and length and changing steel fiber arrangement direction can effectively improve the compression strength of UHPC spherical hinge.

Originality/value

For the first time, UHPC materials were applied to the spherical hinge structure, the UHPC spherical hinge diameter is 1/3 of the diameter of the reinforced concrete spherical hinge, which is equivalent to the diameter of the steel spherical hinge. By applying the UHPC spherical hinge, the manufacturing cost is reduced, the process is simple, and the construction difficulty is reduced.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary purpose of this research was to expand the knowledge base regarding the behavior of steel columns during exposure to fire. This paper presents the numerical study of the effect of heat on the performance of parking steel column in a seven-story steel building under cyclic loading.

Design/methodology/approach

In this research, the forces and deformations developed during a fire are estimated by using detailed 3D finite-element models. The analyses are in the form of a coupled thermo-mechanical analysis in two types of loading: concurrent loading (fire and cyclic loading) and non-concurrent loading (first fire and then cyclically), and the analyses have been conducted in both states of the fire loading with cooling and without cooling using the ABAQUS software. Further, it was investigated whether, during the fire loading, the specimen was protected by a 3-cm-thick concrete coating and how much it changes the seismic performance. After verification of the specimen with the experimental test results, the column model was investigated under different loading conditions.

Findings

The result of analyses indicates that the effect of thermal damage on the performance of steel columns, when cooling is happening late, is more than the state in which cooling occurs immediately after the fire. In this paper, thermal–seismic performance of parking steel columns has been specified and the effect of the fire damage has been investigated for the protected steel by concrete coating and to the non-protected steel, under both cooling and non-cooling states.

Originality/value

This study led to recommendations based on the findings and suggestions for additional work to support performance-based fire engineering. It is clear that predicting force and deformation on steel column during fire is complex and it is affected by many variables. Here in this paper, those variables are examined and proper results have been achieved.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to present technical aspects of the assessment method and evaluation of fire damaged steel structures. The current work focuses on the behavior of structural normal steel (hot-rolled and cold-formed) and high-strength bolts after exposure to elevated temperatures. Information on stainless steel, cast iron and wrought iron is also presented.

Design/methodology/approach

Because of the complexity of the issue, an elaborate presentation of the mechanical properties influencing factors is followed. Subsequently, a wide range of experimental studies is extensively reviewed in the literature while simplified equations for determining the post-fire mechanical properties are proposed, following appropriate categorization. Moreover, the reinstatement survey is also comprehensively described.

Findings

Useful conclusions are drawn for the safe reuse of the structural elements and connection components. According to the parametric investigation of the aforementioned data, it can be safely concluded that the most common scenario of buildings after fire events, i.e. apart from excessively distorted structures, implies considerable remaining capacity of the structure, highlighting that subsequent demolition should not be the case, especially regarding critical infrastructure and buildings.

Originality/value

The stability of the structure as a whole is addressed, with aim to establish specific guidelines and code provisions for the correct appraisal and rehabilitation of fire damaged structures.
