Abstract

Purpose

This research investigates the roles that resources, organisational structure and climate play in the performance management of National Sport Organisations (NSOs).

Design/methodology/approach

This qualitative study draws data from 31 interviews, five focus groups conducted amongst Botswana National Sport Organisations. To corroborate the data collected, documents from these sport organisations were content analysed.

Findings

The amount and type of resources available, the degree to which decision-making is centralised, practices formalised and roles specialised affects how NSOs implement performance management. NSOs were not implementing performance management systems and could not tell whether they were creating favourable environments to implement the practices.

Practical implications

Sport managers, policymakers and educators can use insights from this study to improve their practices. This study also proposes avenues for further research.

Originality/value

This study contributes to sport management literature on performance management, and it is original because such as study has not been conducted before.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this research is to determine the nature of the relationship between sporting, financial performance and a stock price of football clubs by adopting the quarterly financial statements of the European clubs that represent the research sample: Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Olympique Lyonnais, which helps clubs’ managers in evaluating the sporting and financial performance effect on the share price at the quarterly level.

Design/methodology/approach

The research is performed using the panel data technique, for Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Olympique Lyonnais (2007–2016). The sporting performance is represented by the quarterly rate of the number of goals scored by the club to the number of goals scored against it; the quarterly rate of the number of wins to the total number of matches played by the club in local and international competitions. At the same time, financial performance is represented by the quarterly rate of current ratio, the quarterly rate of the leverage ratio, and the quarterly rate of earnings per share (EPS).

Findings

The analysis of the results was distributed at two levels: macro and micro. The analysis at the macro-level dealt with the correlation and influence between the sports performance indicators and the financial performance indicators of the three clubs combined on the share prices of those clubs. The micro-level performance is analyzed separately from the macro analysis. The results indicated that there was an effect on macro analysis. As for the microanalysis, the results showed no effect of the sporting performance of the three clubs on their share price.

Research limitations/implications

The main implications of this research reveal the weakness of the correlation between the clubs' share price in the financial market, possibly due to the quarterly rate of the data. But there is a slight change for Juventus. There is a moderate correlation between the quarterly sporting performance indicators of this club and the quarterly average of its share price in the market.

Practical implications

Social implications

The social implications of the current research are clear by dealing with the relationship between the sports and Financial performance of football clubs and its relationship to the price of its shares in the financial market. The success of football clubs in achieving sporting victory attracts more fans. This leads to an increase in the club's profits and consequently to an increase in the price of its shares in the financial markets. Therefore, the societal benefit will be achieved by increasing the enjoyment of the audience and increasing the revenues of the club and the city to which it belongs.

Originality/value

The originality of this research is represented in its use of quarterly data to clarify the relationship between the sporting and financial performance of a sample of European football clubs with the price of its shares in the financial markets. Therefore, this research differs from previous research that used only daily and annual data for clubs to clarify the relationship between their sporting and financial performance.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate capitalization support, an alternative perspective for theorizing social support in-service settings. In the service setting of the student-athlete experience, the relationships between capitalization support service dimensions (i.e. the academic, athletic, self-development and place dimensions), well-being and sports performance are examined through a transformative sport service research (TSSR) lens, a newly introduced form of transformative service research (TSR).

Design/methodology/approach

Data from an online survey of Australian student-athletes (n = 867) is examined using partial least squares structural equation modeling.

Findings

The results support the theorized service dimensions of capitalization support, indicating their validity and relevance to the student-athlete experience. Further, the results demonstrate that all capitalization support dimensions except athletic support (i.e. academic support, place support and self-development support), have a direct effect on well-being and an indirect effect on sports performance.

Originality/value

This research is unique for several reasons. First, it introduces a new perspective, capitalization support, to theorizing about social support in services. Second, it is one of the first studies in both TSR and TSSR to empirically test and demonstrate a relationship between support services, well-being and performance in a single study. Insight into how to design services to optimize well-being in relation to other service objectives like performance thus emerges.

Identifies performance sport as a phenomenon which has received relatively little conceptual or management analysis. The management of excellence in performance sport is conceptualized as an input‐treatment‐output‐system. Focuses on an evaluation of the key elements of an integrated system and compares these against current provision in the UK. Identifies a failure to distinguish between community recreation and performance sport and a dearth of knowledge about talent identification as significant weaknesses. Concludes that there is an absence of co‐ordinated management and structure, and that investment in education and training is necessary to sustain progress.

Sports clubs are one of the most important elements in the sports systems of today’s societies. In the field of sport, a sports club aims, among other things, to make the sport more affordable and accessible to all, showing the organizational characteristics of companies, but with a much broader social mission. The aim of this chapter is to characterise sports clubs as potentially favorable environments for sports entrepreneurship, making questions about their nature and purposes. Aspects such as the hybridization of organizations, the progressive professionalisation of their members, the use of the entrepreneurial spirit as an instrument to facilitate the achievement of the organisation’s objectives or the need to seek alternative sources of funding to traditional public aid are discussed in the context of increasingly hostile and competitive environments, where social organizations must seek out resources in a similar way to companies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the potential configurations of governance, brand governance and social media strategies leading to effective organizational performance.

Design/methodology/approach

A fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis including 28 Canadian national sport organizations (NSOs) and six conditions highlighted two sufficient configurations for effective organizational performance, defined as either budget per capita or athlete numbers.

Findings

Although no single component of governance, brand governance, or social media strategy is necessary to succeed overall, brand reputation and the strategic use of social media to communicate NSO identity were common to both identified configurations. Accountability was important for effective organizational performance in terms of budget per capita, while transparency was more important for higher athlete numbers. Thus, condition specificity is paramount in non-profit organizations that often have multiple objectives.

Originality/value

This study provides substantial theoretical and managerial implications, including the need to integrate brand governance and social media in non-profit organizations' overall governance activities.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of the present study is to examine the impact of human resource (HR) practices (human resource empowerment, organizational culture and transformational leadership) on innovation activities as well as the effect of innovation activities on perceived financial performance within sport services firms.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed relationships were examined using empirical data from 172 managers of Greek sport services firms. Seemingly unrelated regression (SUR) analysis was used to investigate the role of human resource management (HRM) practices on innovation activities and whether innovation activities affected the perceived financial performance.

Findings

The results of the study indicated that HRM practices, such as human resource empowerment, organizational culture and transformational leadership, significantly impact innovation activities and subsequently innovation activities have a significant and positive effect on perceived financial performance as measured by satisfaction levels in relation to specific key performance indicators (KPIs) such as profit, ROI, sales volume and market share.

Practical implications

This study presents useful theoretical and managerial implications that can be used by sport service firms to assess the effects of HRM practices on innovation activities and perceived financial performance.

Originality/value

This study contributes to the literature on several merits. Firstly, the authors jointly estimate the impact of HRM practices on innovation and its concurrent effect on perceived financial performance, which is not methodologically considered before. Secondly, the authors incorporate a more thorough measure of perceived financial performance including four dimensions of performance, and finally the authors analyze a larger sample of sport services firms relative to previous studies, leading into more concrete conclusion on the research hypotheses.

Abstract

Purpose

Eating disorders are common in sporting populations. They have an adverse effect on athletic performance and can represent a serious health problem. Many practitioners who work with athletes require guidance on how best to respond to these problems. The purpose of this paper is to present an overview of what can be done to address the problem of eating disorders in a high performance sports environment.

Design/methodology/approach

Three clinicians (a psychiatrist, dietitian and psychologist) with many years experience of working in a sports environment were tasked with drafting guidelines relevant to elite sport in consultation with a senior sports physician. The group met on three occasions and corresponded by e‐mail over a 15‐month period. Existing guidelines and literature were reviewed and adapted to the UK high performance sports environment. The guideline was targeted at all practitioners, including coaches, who work in this setting and comments were invited from national sports institutes and governing bodies before the document was finalised.

Findings

The guideline summarises current best practice in the prevention of eating disorders in a sports environment. Screening processes are described alongside the necessary response to a positive screen. Advice on accessing therapy and returning to sport during recovery is also provided. Finally guidance is given on how and when to de‐select athletes who are ill.

Originality/value

This paper presents a comprehensive overview of what can be done to address the problem of eating disorders in a high performance sports environment. It provides practical suggestions and guidance on principles rather than a definitive response to every eventuality in an area that is often difficult and complex.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a tool to manage financial performance of sport federations. It stimulates thinking about the necessity for non‐profit sport organisations to develop financial performance measures and management to survive and/or to grow.

Design/methodology/approach

Adapting the Ritchie and Kolodinsky model of factor analysis through financial ratios in the sport federation context, the paper develops a framework for financial performance measurement of sport federations in Belgium for the years 2001 through 2006.

Findings

Based on a principal component analysis, six financial performance‐related categories were constructed, i.e.: public funds dependence; financial balance; attraction of resources; financial budget; member services investment and elite services investment. They form the basis of a dynamic strategic management tool where financial categories are related to each other.

Research limitations/implications

The financial management tool can be a starting point for further organisational (performance) research. Differences and similarities between countries (e.g., sport policy priorities) and sport organisations (e.g., sport profiles) could be better investigated through this financial performance framework.

Practical implications

The tool developed should help strategic volunteers and managers of sport federations to take strategic decision relying on financial information in order to pilot their organisation and to communicate with their stakeholders.

Originality/value

Developing financial performance measurement of non‐profit sport organisations is challenging and considerably different from for‐profit and non‐profit organisations. It provides researchers and practitioners with a viable model for analysing financial strategy and performance of sport federations over time.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to examine the link between sport event volunteer service performance and sport spectator experience that leads to future intentions.

Design/methodology/approach

Subjects were the international visitors at a mega sporting event in South Korea (n=431). The sample was randomly drawn based on convenience sampling method. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was utilized to test the hypotheses. The adequacy and statistical significance of the path models were confirmed by individual indicator loadings, average variance explained, bootstrap t-statistics and convergent validity.

Findings

Volunteer service performance significantly predicted event satisfaction, event image, and host city image and indirectly influenced intentions to revisit the event and host city. Event image predicted host city image, event satisfaction and intention to revisit the event. Host city image predicted event satisfaction and intention to revisit the host city. Event satisfaction predicted both intentions to revisit the event and the host city.

Originality/value

Sport event volunteers are in direct contact with spectators; therefore the performance of volunteers’ service may have an impact on establishing event and host city images perceived by visitors at the event. The research findings suggest that sport event volunteer performance positively affects image formation and further induce international visitors to revisit both the event and the host city. One of the key findings includes the important role of event satisfaction in the association between volunteer performance, image formation and future behavior.
