Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present a fixed‐point implementation of a complete direct torque control (DTC) algorithm connected with a rotor speed estimation algorithm for the induction motor drive, using field‐programmable gate array (FPGA).

Design/methodology/approach

The parallel processing approach is described, which requires a decomposition of the control and estimation algorithms for the converter‐fed induction motor to several tasks, realised in parallel. The advanced data processing techniques are described, like PIPELINE technique for data streams design, coordinate rotation digital computer algorithm for transformation of stator flux vector components from Cartesian to polar coordinates. Moreover, the method for the qualitative analysis of the full‐order state observer's sensitivity to the variations of the induction motor equivalent circuit parameters is presented.

Findings

It is shown that the developed FPGA‐based DTC structure enables designing an efficient application for the induction motor control. Owing to the high‐processing frequency, the digital FPGA‐based DTC application is similar in its features to the analogue realisation based on the comparators. Yet all the advantages of the digital structure, i.e. high flexibility, parameterization capability, etc. remain unchanged. Furthermore, FPGA is hardware realisation of a digital data processing algorithm; hence the reliability of the control system is improved.

Research limitations/implications

The investigations are performed in the developing prototype setup, based on PXI‐1042 Industrial PC equipped with Xilinx Virtex‐II FPGA matrix, programmed with LabVIEW.

Practical implications

The experimental tests of the FPGA‐based implementation of the whole control structure of the sensorless DTC drive system are demonstrated. It is also shown, that the full‐order state observer with the speed adaptation loop is significantly sensitive to motor parameter variations in the low‐speed region, which must be taken into account while designing the adaptation algorithm for speed estimation in real application.

Originality/value

The paper's value lies in the overall, FPGA‐based design of the speed sensorless DTC structure for the induction motor including motor speed, torque and stator flux control loops, stator flux and rotor speed estimation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop a reconstruction and measurement system for data analysis using ultrasonic transmission tomography. The problem of reconstruction from the projection is encountered in practical implementation, which consists in reconstructing an image that is an estimation of an unknown object from a finite set of projection data. Reconstructive algorithms used in transmission tomography are based on linear mathematical models, which makes it necessary to process non-linear data into estimates for a finite number of projections. The application of transformation methods requires building a mathematical model in which the projection data forming the known and unknown quantities are functions with arguments from a continuous set of real numbers, determining the function describing the unknown quantities sought in the form of inverse relation and adapting it to operate on discrete and noisy data. This was done by designing a tomographic device and proprietary algorithms capable of reconstructing two-dimensional images regardless of the size, shape, location or number of inclusions hidden in the examined object.

Design/methodology/approach

The application consists of a device and measuring sensors, as well as proprietary algorithms for image reconstruction. Ultrasonic transmission tomography makes it possible to analyse processes occurring in an object without interfering with the examined object. The proposed solution uses algorithms based on ray integration, the Fermat principle and deterministic methods. Two applications were developed, one based on C and implemented on the embedded device, while the other application was made in Matlab.

Findings

Research shows that ultrasonic transmission tomography provides an effective analysis of tested objects in closed tanks.

Research limitations/implications

In the presented technique, the use of ultrasonic absorption wave has been limited. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of such a solution has been confirmed.

Practical implications

The presented solution can be used for research and monitoring of technological processes.

Originality/value

Author’s tomographic system consisting of a measuring system and image reconstruction algorithms.

Purpose

The rapid rising of renewable energy sources particularly wind energy cannot be ignored. The numerical increase in wind energy farms throughout the world is the best example. The purpose of this paper is to assess the basic question of whether wind characteristics affect the performance and cost of energy. The importance of this question cannot be ruled out while comparing renewable energy to a conventional form of energy more specifically especially for the developing country where the cost of energy is very high.

Design/methodology/approach

The research design of this paper is consists of an assessment of local wind characteristics of the wind farm site using Weibull k and c parameters. The performance model is used to assess the performance of the wind turbine (WT) corresponding to local wind characteristics. The wind correlation with WT in terms of changing wind speed has been assessed to quantify the effects of wind speed on the WT behavior and failure of WT components. Similarly, the power curve of WT is assessed and compared with the International Electrotechnical Commission standards 61400-12-2. The WT power coefficient and tip speed ratio corresponding to wind speed is also investigated. The energy volume and cost of energy lost model is used to determine the cost and volume loss of energy/kWh of the wind farm.

Findings

The findings of practical wind farms showed that the wind conditions of the site are showing a strong tendency that can be determined from the results of Weibull k and c parameters. The k and c parameters are observed to be 3.44 and 9.16 m/s, respectively, for a period of a year. The standard deviation is observed to be 2.56 for a period of a year. WT shows the efficient behavior can be obtained from the power coefficient and tip speed of WT at different wind speeds. Also, wind farm observation showed that to be some increasing wind speed cause of based WT component failures. The results of energy volume and cost/kWh assessment showed that the major portion of energy volume and cost of energy is lost owing to network, voltage dip and frequency surge, electrical and mechanical components failures.

Originality/value

Generally, it can be concluded that the WTs are now able to cope with variable wind speeds. However, the results of this paper are showing that WT performance and availability decreased due to increased wind speeds. It can also be a reason to decreased volume and increase the cost of energy/kWh.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to undertake analysis and comparison of the closed‐loop and sensorless control systems sensitivity to the broken rotor for diagnostic purposes. For the same vector control system induction motor drive analysis concerning operation with the asymmetric motor, broken rotor fault handling and operation were investigated. Reliability, range of stable operation, fault symptoms and application of diagnosis methods based on control system variables utilization was analyzed.

Design/methodology/approach

Induction motor drive vector control system synthesis was applied using the multiscalar variables of the machine model with nonlinear feedback linearization applied to use classical cascaded PI controllers for the speed‐torque and flux decoupled control. Speed observer was applied for the rotor flux and rotor speed estimation for the sensorless control system synthesis.

Findings

Relative sensitivity of the state and control system variables to broken rotor fault based on experimental results for the closed‐loop and sensorless control systems is presented and compared. Drawbacks of using the MCSA analysis for the rotor fault diagnosis in the closed‐loop and sensorless control systems are pointed. Advantages and drawbacks of the state space estimators filtering characteristics in the sensorless control system are described.

Practical implications

Asymmetric IM motor drive handling and diagnosis. Broken rotor range diagnosis inconsistency using the popular MCSA method should be considered in the closed‐loop and sensorless control system of the induction motor drive. Depending on the IM motor drive application and the operation requirements the results can be used for asymmetric machine proper handling, choosing proper control system structure and control system variables for rotor fault early diagnosis.

Originality/value

Sensitivity of the state and control system variables to broken rotor fault based on experimental results for the closed‐loop and sensorless control systems is presented, which implies motor handling procedures and fault diagnosis.

Purpose

Presently, 6 Degree of Freedom (6DOF) visual pose measurement methods enjoy popularity in the industrial sector. However, challenges persist in accurately measuring the visual pose of blank and rough metal casts. Therefore, this paper introduces a 6DOF pose measurement method utilizing stereo vision, and aims to the 6DOF pose measurement of blank and rough metal casts.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper studies the 6DOF pose measurement of metal casts from three aspects: sample enhancement of industrial objects, optimization of detector and attention mechanism. Virtual reality technology is used for sample enhancement of metal casts, which solves the problem of large-scale sample sampling in industrial application. The method also includes a novel deep learning detector that uses multiple key points on the object surface as regression objects to detect industrial objects with rotation characteristics. By introducing a mixed paths attention module, the detection accuracy of the detector and the convergence speed of the training are improved.

Findings

The experimental results show that the proposed method has a better detection effect for metal casts with smaller size scaling and rotation characteristics.

Originality/value

A method for 6DOF pose measurement of industrial objects is proposed, which realizes the pose measurement and grasping of metal blanks and rough machined casts by industrial robots.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze a presentation of eddy current sensing coils for the turbo charger speed measurement, which were manufactured with the low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. The goal is to be able to manufacture small robust coils with complex geometries and improved signal output.

Design/methodology/approach

A crucial element for its performance is the quality factor of the embedded coil. Thanks to the use of the developed LTCC manufacturing processes, the lateral wounding distance of the printed coils can be reduced to 30 µm, and simultaneously, the aspect ratio should be enlarged compared to standard LTCC technologies. By the use of a novel printed double-D coil design, the overall sensor characteristics will be improved.

Findings

The metallization thickness can be simultaneously enhanced that results in the internal resistance being reduced. Thus, the inductivity and the ohmic resistance achieve an obvious optimization that results in significant improvement of the quality factor of the novel coils when compared to standard technologies. Embedded micro coils have a sintered metallization aspect ratio of more than one and thus an optimal performance differing clearly from prior art. Their reliability was proven through temperature cycle tests of over more than 1,300 h.

Research limitations/implications

The developed LTCC coil technology will be introduced in the JAQUET sensor portfolio of TE Connectivity for the measurement of turbocharger speed on both passenger cars and trucks. The measurement and control of turbochargers speed enables the optimal regulation of airflow into the engine thereby improving the fuel economy and leading to a reduction of engine emissions.

Originality/value

This paper shows fabrication and performance of the original manufactured LTCC coil for turbocharger speed sensors and its optimized signal output by the novel design.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to describe precisely the wind speed regime and characteristics of a runway of an International Airport, the north-western part of Turkey.

Design methodology approach

Three different probability distributions, namely, Inverse Gaussian (IG), widely used two-parameter Weibull and Rayleigh distributions in the literature, are used to represent wind regime and characteristics of the runway. The parameters of each distribution are estimated by the pattern search (PS)-based heuristic algorithm. The results are compared with the other three methods-based numerical computation, including maximum-likelihood method, moment method (MoM) and power density method, respectively. To evaluate the fitting performance of the proposed method, several statistical goodness tests including the mostly used root mean square error (RMSE) and chi-squared (X2) are conducted.

Findings

In the light of the statistical goodness tests, the results of the IG-based PS attain better performance than the classical Weibull and Rayleigh functions. Both the RMSE and X2 values achieved by the IG-based PS method lower than that of Weibull and Rayleigh distributions. It exhibits a better fitting performance with 0.0074 for RMSE and 0.58 × 10−4 for X2 for probability density function (PDF) in 2012 and with RMSE of 0.0084 and X2 of 0.74 × 10−4 for PDF in 2013. As regard the cumulative density function of the measured wind data, the best results are found to be Weibull-based PS with RMSE of 0.0175 and X2 of 3.25 × 10−4 in 2012. However, Weibull-based MoM shows more excellent ability in 2013, with RMSE of 0.0166 and X2 of 2.94 × 10−4. Consequently, it is considered that the results of this study confirm that IG-based PS with the lowest error value can a good choice to model more accurately and characterize the wind speed profile of the airport.

Practical implications

This paper presents a realistic point of view regarding the wind regime and characteristics of an airport. This study may cast the light on researchers, policymakers, policy analysts and airport designers intending to investigate the wind profile of a runway at the airport in the world and also provide a significant pathway on how to determine the wind distribution of the runway.

Originality value

Instead of the well-known Weibull distribution for the representing of wind distribution in the literature, in this paper, IG distribution is used. Furthermore, the suitability of IG to represent the wind distribution is validated when compared with two-parameter Weibull and Rayleigh distributions. Besides, the performance and efficiency of PS have been evaluated by comparing it with other methods.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate exploration and exploitation as antecedents to speed of internationalization in born global firms.

Design/methodology/approach

By using 150 born global firms in China, the authors demonstrate that the influence of exploration and exploitation on born globals’ speed of internationalization. The statistical method in this study is hierarchical regression model.

Findings

The results revealed that exploration has a negative effect on the internationalization of born global firms, whereas exploration does not. The interaction between exploration and exploitation has positive influence on born globals’ speed of internationalization.

Practical implications

The study helps entrepreneurs and managers to better understand how to achieve international entrepreneurship success and internationalization success.

Originality/value

This study makes a theoretical development of internationalization speed, a core aspect of international entrepreneurship theory. First, this study contributes to theories on born globals’ speed of internationalization, which the authors redefined in the current study by using two approaches to measure the speed of internationalization of born global firms. Second, the study used exploration and exploitation as the two designated factors that are supposed to affect the speed of internationalization of born globals which contributes to the theoretical literature of international opportunity.

Abstract

Purpose

Wave breaking significantly affects the exchange process between ocean and atmosphere. This paper aims to simulate the upper ocean dynamics under the influence of wave breaking, which may help to figure out the transport of energy by these breakers.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors use a breaker-LES model to simulate the oceanic boundary layer in hurricane conditions, in which breakers become the main source of momentum and energy instead of traditional wind stress.

Findings

The mean horizontal velocities and energy increase rapidly with wind speed, reflecting that input from atmosphere dominates the coherent structure in the upper ocean. The penetration ability of a breaker limits its effective depth and thus the total turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) decreases sharply near the surface. Langmuir circulation is the main source of TKE in deeper water. The authors compared the dissipation rate (e) in the simulations with two estimates and found that the model tends to the scaling of ε∼z–3.4 at extreme wind speeds.

Originality/value

The probability distribution of breakers is also discussed based on the balance between the input from atmosphere and output by wave breaking. The authors considered the contribution of micro-scale breakers and revaluated the probability density function. The results show stability in hurricane conditions.
