Abstract

Purpose

This research investigates the effect of accessibility to points of tourist interest (buffer) and direct and indirect spatial spillover effects of agglomeration economies on tourism industry revenues in Spain.

Design/methodology/approach

Data were collected from the Bureau van Dijk's (BvD) Orbis global database. The data were analysed using a spatial econometric model and the Cobb–Douglas production function.

Findings

This study reveals that hotels located inside the buffer zone of points of tourist interest achieve better economic outcomes than hotels located outside the buffer. Furthermore, the results show that there is a direct and indirect spatial spillover effect in the hotel industry.

Practical implications

The results provide valuable information for identifying areas where the agglomeration of hotels will produce a spillover effect on hotel revenue and the area of influence of location characteristics. This information is relevant for hotels already established in a destination or when seeking a location for a new hotel.

Social implications

The results of this study can help city planners in influencing the distribution of hotels to fit desired patterns and improve an area's spatial beauty.

Originality/value

The paper provides insights into how investment, structural characteristics, reputation and location affect hotel revenue.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a spatial six‐link RRCCRR (where R denotes a revolute joint, and C denotes a cylindric joint) mechanism to be used as the mechanism body of a biped robot with three translations (3T) manipulation ability.

Design/methodology/approach

This biped RRCCRR mechanism can reach any position on the ground by a crawling mode or alternatively, a somersaulting mode. After the robot reaches a designated position, it can work in manipulation mode. Mobility, walking mode, kinematic and stability analyses are performed, respectively.

Findings

Based on this biped RRCCRR mechanism, a biped 3T lifter which can be used in industry is designed and analyzed. Finally, the proposed concept is verified by experiments on a prototype.

Originality/value

The work presented in this paper is one of new explorations to apply traditional spatial linkage mechanisms to the field of biped robots, and is also a new attempt to use the biped robot, that is generally used in the field of bionic robots, as a mobile manipulator robot platform in industry.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a classification method for steel strip surface defects based on a mixed attention mechanism to achieve fast and accurate classification performance. The traditional method of classifying surface defects of hot-rolled steel strips has the problems of low recognition accuracy and low efficiency in the industrial complex production environment.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors selected min–max scaling comparison method to filter the training results of multiple network models on the steel strip surface defect data set. Then, the best comprehensive performance model EfficientNet-B0 was refined. Based on this, the authors proposed two mixed attention addition methods, which include squeeze-excitation spatial mixed module and multilayer mixed attention mechanism (MMAM) module, respectively.

Findings

With these two methods, the authors achieved 96.72% and 97.70% recognition accuracy on the steel strip data set after data augmentation for adapting to the complex production environment, respectively. Using the transfer learning method, the EfficientNet-B0 based on MMAM obtained 100% recognition accuracy.

Originality/value

This study not only focuses on improving the recognition accuracy of the network model itself but also considers other performance indicators of the network, which are rarely considered by many researchers. The authors further improve the intelligent production technique and address this issue. Both methods proposed in this paper can be applied to embedded equipment, which can effectively improve steel strip factory production efficiency and reduce material and time loss.

Abstract

Purpose

The current studies on remaining useful life (RUL) prediction mainly rely on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long short-term memories (LSTMs) and do not take full advantage of the attention mechanism, resulting in lack of prediction accuracy. To further improve the performance of the above models, this study aims to propose a novel end-to-end RUL prediction framework, called convolutional recurrent attention network (CRAN) to achieve high accuracy.

Design/methodology/approach

The proposed CRAN is a CNN-LSTM-based model that effectively combines the powerful feature extraction ability of CNN and sequential processing capability of LSTM. The channel attention mechanism, spatial attention mechanism and LSTM attention mechanism are incorporated in CRAN, assigning different attention coefficients to CNN and LSTM. First, features of the bearing vibration data are extracted from both time and frequency domain. Next, the training and testing set are constructed. Then, the CRAN is trained offline using the training set. Finally, online RUL estimation is performed by applying data from the testing set to the trained CRAN.

Findings

CNN-LSTM-based models have higher RUL prediction accuracy than CNN-based and LSTM-based models. Using a combination of max pooling and average pooling can reduce the loss of feature information, and in addition, the structure of the serial attention mechanism is superior to the parallel attention structure. Comparing the proposed CRAN with six different state-of-the-art methods, for the predicted results of two testing bearings, the proposed CRAN has an average reduction in the root mean square error of 57.07/80.25%, an average reduction in the mean absolute error of 62.27/85.87% and an average improvement in score of 12.65/6.57%.

Originality/value

This article provides a novel end-to-end rolling bearing RUL prediction framework, which can provide a reference for the formulation of bearing maintenance programs in the industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to design a new method to realize automatic assembly of aircraft components with large shafts such as canard and vertical tail. The assembly structure of component with large shaft and fuselage is a mating assembly structure, and it is a challenge to satisfy the precision and assembly requirement.

Design/methodology/approach

According to the assembly structure features and process requirements of an aircraft component with large shaft, the operating principle of precise assembly system for shaft-hole mating is analyzed in this paper. The model of compliant assembly for shaft-hole mating is constructed, and force condition analysis of the compliant assembly is performed. An automatic precise shaft-hole assembly method for aircraft assembly using 5 degrees of freedom spatial mechanism, compliance technology and servo feeding system is put forward based on the analysis. A 5 degrees of freedom passive compliant experimental equipment has been developed.

Findings

Application test results of the 5 degrees of freedom passive compliant experimental equipment show that the simulated canard can be mated automatically and accurately through this method with high efficiency and high quality as long as the tip of shaft enters into the range of hole’s chamfer.

Practical implications

This method has been used in an aircraft assembly project. The practical results show that the aircraft components with large shafts can be mated automatically and accurately through this method with high efficiency and high quality.

Originality/value

This paper presents a new method and designs a new assembly system to realize the assembly of the aircraft components with large shafts. The research will promote the automation of fuselage assembly.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a conceptual model that portrays how contextual factors and behavioural cooperation mechanisms influence the effect of trade associations on the export performance of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in a Latin American emerging economy.

Design/methodology/approach

The author draws on multiple streams of literature including: co-location, networks, cooperation and export performance to suggest a series of solid theoretical insights to the literature on SMEs’ export performance, networks and co-location in the Latin American context.

Findings

Contextual factors and behavioural cooperation mechanisms influence the effect of trade associations on export performance determining the final sign of such effect. Trust plays a role within all proposed mechanisms, but is not as fundamental as previously characterised in studies on the export performance of SMEs. Cooperation might exist, prevail, and exert a positive impact on SMEs’ export performance even in the absence of trust.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the literature on SMEs’ export performance, networks and co-location in the Latin American context by presenting a theoretical model that enfolds co-location, networks, trade associations and cooperation effects on SMEs’ export performance under the same foundation. It creates the categories of “contextual factors” and “behavioural cooperation mechanisms” to differentiate the elements that weight on the relationship between firms and trade associations, thus facilitating or hindering export performance. It guides policy makers and company managers on where to focus when incentivizing conduct towards a more productive export performance in Latin America and other emerging economies.

Objetivo

Este artículo presenta un modelo teórico que describe cómo factores de contexto y mecanismos de cooperación conductuales impactan el efecto de las asociaciones de negocios en el desempeño exportador de las pequeñas y medianas empresas (PYMES) en el contexto de los países emergentes de América Latina.

Acercamiento

Los autores se basan en diversas líneas de investigación de la literatura, incluyendo: Co-locación, Redes, Cooperación y Desempeño Exportador para sugerir una serie de conclusiones teóricas referentes a la relación entre las PYMES y las asociaciones de negocios.

Resultados

Los factores contextuales y los mecanismos de cooperación conductuales influyen en el efecto de las asociaciones de negocios en el desempeño de las exportaciones de las PYMES, determinando el signo final de dicho efecto. La confianza desempeña un papel dentro de todos los mecanismos conductuales propuestos, pero no tan fundamental como se caracterizó previamente en los estudios sobre el desempeño exportador de PYMES. La cooperación podría existir, prevalecer y ejercer un impacto positivo en el desempeño de las exportaciones de las PYMES, incluso en ausencia de confianza.

Originalidad/Valor

Este artículo contribuye a la literatura enfocada en PYMES, redes, co-locación y desempeño exportador, mediante la introducción de un modelo teórico que incluye en una plataforma única los conceptos de co-localización, redes, asociaciones de negocios y efectos de la cooperación en el desempeño de las exportaciones de las PYMES. En adición, crea las categorías de “factores contextuales” y “mecanismos de cooperación conductual” para diferenciar los elementos que influyen en la relación entre las empresas y las asociaciones de negocios, facilitando u obstaculizando así el desempeño de las exportaciones de PYMES en América Latina y otras economías emergentes.

Abstract

Purpose

Given the recent rapid economic development, the processes of industrialization and urbanization are accelerating. At the same time, the contradiction between environmental quality and economic development has become increasingly prominent and is likely to restrict the normal pace of China’s economic development and environmental protection. As such, the purpose of this paper is to incorporate the urbanization factor into an analytic framework to discuss the relationship among urbanization, economic development, and environmental pollution.

Design/methodology/approach

A panel data of 31 Chinese provinces from 2004 to 2015 is selected for this research. A spatial correlation test is first conducted on the environmental pollution status, then the spatial Durbin model is used to carry out spatial econometric testing of the relationship among the above three factors.

Findings

Interprovincial environmental pollution in China has significant positive spatial correlation, environmental pollution discharge in most provinces is significantly stable, discharge of environmental pollutants is transitioning from coastal to inland provinces, and urbanization and economic growth can both aggravate environmental pollution, but economic growth can relieve environmental pollution in neighboring provinces.

Originality/value

The relationship between economic growth, urbanization, and environmental quality has always been an important issue for sustainable development. As such, China’s urbanization leads to economic development, while rapid economic growth and environmental pollution are coordinated. This paper focuses on the specific relationship between them. To this end, local governments make concerted efforts to formulate sound environmental regulation policies based on local environmental conditions, where economic development is an effective means of alleviating the contradictory relationship between economic development and environmental protection.

Abstract

Purpose

This article explores the scientific construction of library olfactory space, based on the case of the olfactory space in the Jiangsu University library. It specifically focuses on understanding the interaction between the physical architectural space of the library and users’ olfactory perception and behavioral activities, with the ultimate goal of creating a deeply integrated olfactory experience in the Jiangsu University Library.

Design/methodology/approach

In this article, an empirical research method was used to gather perceptions from 30 university student users regarding the library olfactory space and to understand their olfactory preferences and requirements for its construction. Through qualitative analysis of the interview texts, the study identified correlations between user perceptions and elements of the library olfactory space.

Findings

The qualitative analysis of user interview texts and results from the library olfactory space design experiment contributed to the design proposal for the Jiangsu University Library olfactory space. The design proposal for the Jiangsu University Library olfactory space is provided and includes library architecture, activity context, functional services, olfactory experience design and technological applications.

Research limitations/implications

This case study takes the environment, development strategy and user needs of the Jiangsu University Library as its unique research background and as such is not universal or generalizable to other libraries.

Originality/value

This article differs from others by advocating for the innovative architectural spatial design of libraries through olfactory experience, breaking the traditional perception of libraries as solely through visual and auditory senses.

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the reader to Spatial Health Econometrics (SHE). In both micro and macro health economics there are phenomena that are characterised by a strong spatial dimension, from hospitals engaging in local competitions in the delivery of health care services, to the regional concentration of health risk factors and needs. SHE allows health economists to incorporate these spatial effects using simple econometric models that take into account these spillover effects. This improves our understanding of issues such as hospital quality, efficiency and productivity and the sustainability of health expenditure of regional and national health care systems, to mention a few.

The purpose of this paper is to present an algorithm for spatially sorting objects into an annular structure.

Design/methodology/approach

A swarm‐based model that requires only stochastic agent behaviour coupled with a pheromone‐inspired “attraction‐repulsion” mechanism.

Findings

The algorithm consistently generates high‐quality annular structures, and is particularly powerful in situations where the initial configuration of objects is similar to those observed in nature.

Research limitations/implications

Experimental evidence supports previous theoretical arguments about the nature and mechanism of spatial sorting by insects.

Practical implications

The algorithm may find applications in distributed robotics.

Originality/value

The model offers a powerful minimal algorithmic framework, and also sheds further light on the nature of attraction‐repulsion algorithms and underlying natural processes.
