Abstract

Purpose

The security of applications, systems and networks has always been the source of great concern for both enterprises and common users. Different security tools like intrusion detection system/intrusion prevention system and firewalls are available that provide preventive security to the enterprise networks. However, security information and event management (SIEM) systems use these tools in combination to collect events from diverse data sources across the network. SIEM is a proactive tool that processes the events to present a unified security view of the whole network at one location. SIEM system has, therefore, become an essential component of an enterprise network security architecture. However, from various options available, the selection of a suitable and cost-effective open source SIEM solution that can effectively meet most of the security requirements of small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is not simple because of the lack of strong analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

In this work, the authors first review the security challenges faced by different SME sectors and then consider a comprehensive comparative analysis of the capabilities of well-known open source SIEM solutions. Based on this, the authors provide requirements based recommendations of open source SIEM solutions for SMEs. This paper aims to provide a valuable resource that can be referred to by SMEs for the selection of a SIEM system best suited to their organization’s security posture.

Findings

Security requirements of SMEs vary according to their network infrastructure; therefore, every open source SIEM solution would not be suitable for an SME. Selection of a SIEM solution from available open source solutions based upon the security requirements of an SME network is a critical task. Therefore, in this work, a meaningful insight for the selection of an appropriate SIEM solution for SMEs is provided.

Originality/value

Major contribution of this work is the mapping of the security requirements of the SME sectors under consideration, against the open source SIEM options to provide meaningful insight for SMEs in the selection of an appropriate solution.

Abstract

Purpose

Multi-objective is a complex problem that appears in real life while these objectives are conflicting. The swarm intelligence algorithm is often used to solve such multi-objective problems. Due to its strong search ability and convergence ability, particle swarm optimization algorithm is proposed, and the multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to solve multi-objective optimization problems. However, the particles of particle swarm optimization algorithm are easy to fall into local optimization because of their fast convergence. Uneven distribution and poor diversity are the two key drawbacks of the Pareto front of multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm. Therefore, this paper aims to propose an improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm using adaptive Cauchy mutation and improved crowding distance.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the proposed algorithm uses adaptive Cauchy mutation and improved crowding distance to perturb the particles in the population in a dynamic way in order to help the particles trapped in the local optimization jump out of it which improves the convergence performance consequently.

Findings

In order to solve the problems of uneven distribution and poor diversity in the Pareto front of multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm, this paper uses adaptive Cauchy mutation and improved crowding distance to help the particles trapped in the local optimization jump out of the local optimization. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has obvious advantages in convergence performance for nine benchmark functions compared with other multi-objective optimization algorithms.

Originality/value

In order to help the particles trapped in the local optimization jump out of the local optimization which improves the convergence performance consequently, this paper proposes an improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm using adaptive Cauchy mutation and improved crowding distance.

Abstract

Purpose

The primary driver of future aviation has recently been sustainability. The rapid development of radically new, disruptive technologies and solutions should be regularly evaluated to maintain the desired trends in sustainable aviation. The purpose of this research can be listed as follows: (i) to propose a sustainable performance index and methodology (ii) to evaluate the new technologies and solutions, and (iii) apply them to evaluate the effect of technologies and solutions under development.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper introduces a total sustainable performance index for evaluating the sustainability; demonstrates its applicability to future development processes; recognizes the supporting new technologies and solutions by implementing their identification, evaluation and selection processes; and defines the major trends and drivers maintaining the sustainability of the future aviation.

Findings

This study has resulted in a proposed new “total sustainable performance index,” and methodology of identifying key drivers that allow defining the technology and solution-driven trends, and defines the major trends and listed technologies and solutions that may have a determining role in given trends.

Research limitations/implications

There are dilemmas on taking into account the positive effects of aviation on the economy and society that may overwrite the costs and limited information about the foresight on new technologies and solutions.

Practical implications

It depends on access to required inputs.

Social implications

Two-way effects of solid expectations of society on the possible greening of aviation can be listed as the social implication of this research.

Originality/value

The proposed “total sustainability performance index” totally evaluates sustainability, including a penalty, considering the policy (regulation) and interest of future generations.

Abstract

Purpose

Firms increasingly rely on both external and internal crowdsourcing to capture ideas more broadly and enhance innovative problem-solving. Especially in internal crowdsourcing, knowledge sharing that contributes to develop or further the understanding of the problem the idea is focused on solving can take place between critical employees, and in that way improve ideas generated by others. This far, most crowdsourcing practices have focused on identifying solutions to proposed problems, whereas much less is known about how crowds can be used to share problem-related knowledge. There is thus an untapped potential in leveraging crowds not just to generate solution-oriented ideas but also to share knowledge to improve ideas and even to reframe problems. This paper aims to explore the effect of problem- and solution-related knowledge sharing in internal crowdsourcing for idea development.

Design/methodology/approach

Data on ideas and comments were collected from an idea management system in a Swedish multinational company. The investigation captures the influences of the problem- and solution-related knowledge sharing on ideas based on content analysis and logistic regression analysis.

Findings

The results from this study show that sharing knowledge related to solutions in idea development impacts idea acceptance positively, whereas sharing knowledge related to problems in idea development has a negative effect on the likelihood of idea acceptance and these effects of knowledge sharing are moderated by the active author responses.

Practical implications

This research provides managerial implications for firms to deliberately manage knowledge sharing in peer communities in internal crowdsourcing, especially by providing suggestions on problem reframing and solution refining for ideas.

Originality/value

The results contribute to existing theory in terms of extending the view of crowdsourcing in ideation to include how crowds contribute to the development of the problem and the solution during the development of ideas and providing new insights on knowledge sharing in internal crowdsourcing based on problem-solving theory.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to explore students’ interests in multimodal texts by focusing on videos of social issues.

Design/methodology/approach

Data from 50 students in a first-year multilingual composition course were analyzed in two phases. Phase One examined 14 students’ reasons for self-selecting videos for multimodal analysis essays in one section of the course. Phase Two explored 50 students’ selected videos in four sections of the course across four semesters. The videos were classified as either problem- or solution-oriented to examine the students’ interests.

Findings

Analyzing the students’ responses in Phase One revealed that most of the selected videos included solutions to a social problem, and the students advocated the compelling ways in which the characters therein dealt with those problems. The findings for Phase Two revealed that the students’ selections were equally divided between problem- and solution-oriented videos. Nevertheless, a gradual increase in the selection of solution-oriented videos was observed over time.

Practical implications

A significant implication of this study is that it can help teachers expand their understanding of interesting and meaningful texts and make more engaging and effective instructional decisions.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature on text selection as it highlights students’ inclination toward what type of learning content interests them.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to develop two integrable shallow water wave equations, of higher-dimensions, and with constant and time-dependent coefficients, respectively. The author derives multiple soliton solutions and a class of lump solutions which are rationally localized in all directions in space.

Design/methodology/approach

The author uses the simplified Hirota’s method and lump technique for determining multiple soliton solutions and lump solutions as well. The author shows that the developed (2+1)- and (3+1)-dimensional models are completely integrable in in the Painlené sense.

Findings

The paper reports new Painlevé-integrable extended equations which belong to the shallow water wave medium.

Research limitations/implications

The author addresses the integrability features of this model via using the Painlevé analysis. The author reports multiple soliton solutions for this equation by using the simplified Hirota’s method.

Practical implications

The obtained lump solutions include free parameters; some parameters are related to the translation invariance and the other parameters satisfy a non-zero determinant condition.

Social implications

The work presents useful algorithms for constructing new integrable equations and for the determination of lump solutions.

Originality/value

The paper presents an original work with newly developed integrable equations and shows useful findings of solitary waves and lump solutions.

This chapter looks at how Goal 17 on partnerships can be a lever of change. It discusses the partnership approach to achieving the SDGs and unravels the key functions of networks and partnerships, such as knowledge sharing, coordination, and collaborative governance. It carefully explains why we need to shift the focus of the global debate from collaborative governance to the cocreation of public value outcomes. It then provides a schematic account of the different steps in the process of cocreating outcomes, which include initiation, design, implementation, and evaluation. Abstract

This chapter first examines the role of attention in the garbage can model of decision making and compares it both to prior approaches in the Carnegie School tradition and the attention-based view of the firm. Both the garbage can model and the attention-based view rely on the same assumption, one that is rarely recognized nor understood – that organizational decision making is characterized by situated attention, where organizational participants vary across time and place in what they attend to. In the garbage can model, decision opportunities are the temporal contexts for situated attention; in the attention-based view, attention is situated in both time and place within the organization's communication channels. In the garbage can, situated attention is also shaped by the ecology of problems and opportunities competing for attention. The final part examines the determinants and consequences of tight versus loose coupling of channels in organizations and its effects on participants’ situated attention. Attention structures external to channels and the architecture of channel structures shape the degree of coupling found in organizations. In viewing coupling as a variable, the chapter suggests that a modified garbage can model, combined with an increased focus on situated attention, provides the foundations for a more general theory of nonroutine decision making.

Abstract

Crowdsourcing – a form of collaboration across organizational boundaries – provides access to knowledge beyond an organization’s local knowledge base. Integrating work on organization theory and innovation, the authors first develop a framework that characterizes crowdsourcing into a main sequential process, through which organizations (1) define the task they wish to have completed; (2) broadcast to a pool of potential contributors; (3) attract a crowd of contributors; and (4) select among the inputs they receive. For each of these phases, the authors identify the key decisions organizations make, provide a basic explanation for each decision, discuss the trade-offs organizations face when choosing among decision alternatives, and explore how organizations may resolve these trade-offs. Using this decision-centric approach, the authors continue by showing that there are fundamental interdependencies in the process that makes the coordination of crowdsourcing challenging.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a semi-analytical benchmarking framework for enthalpy-based methods used in problems involving phase change with latent heat. The benchmark is based on a class of semi-analytical solutions of spatially symmetric Stefan problems in an arbitrary spatial dimension. Via a public repository this study provides a finite element numerical code based on the FEniCS computational platform, which can be used to test and compare any method of choice with the (semi-)analytical solutions. As a particular demonstration, this paper uses the benchmark to test several standard temperature-based implementations of the enthalpy method and assesses their accuracy and stability with respect to the discretization parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

The class of spatially symmetric semi-analytical self-similar solutions to the Stefan problem is found for an arbitrary spatial dimension, connecting some of the known results in a unified manner, while providing the solutions’ existence and uniqueness. For two chosen standard semi-implicit temperature-based enthalpy methods, the numerical error assessment of the implementations is carried out in the finite element formulation of the problem. This paper compares the numerical approximations to the semi-analytical solutions and analyzes the influence of discretization parameters, as well as their interdependence. This study also compares accuracy of these methods with other traditional approach based on time-explicit treatment of the effective heat capacity with and without iterative correction.

Findings

This study shows that the quantitative comparison between the semi-analytical and numerical solutions of the symmetric Stefan problems can serve as a robust tool for identifying the optimal values of discretization parameters, both in terms of accuracy and stability. Moreover, this study concludes that, from the performance point of view, both of the semi-implicit implementations studied are equivalent, for optimal choice of discretization parameters, they outperform the effective heat capacity method with iterative correction in terms of accuracy, but, by contrast, they lose stability for subcritical thickness of the mushy region.

Practical implications

The proposed benchmark provides a versatile, accessible test bed for computational methods approximating multidimensional phase change problems. The supplemented numerical code can be directly used to test any method of choice against the semi-analytical solutions.

Originality/value

While the solutions of the symmetric Stefan problems for individual spatial dimensions can be found scattered across the literature, the unifying perspective on their derivation presented here has, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, been missing. The unified formulation in a general dimension can be used for the systematic construction of well-posed, reliable and genuinely multidimensional benchmark experiments.
