Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of spiritual quotient (SQ) on the organisational sustainability from the Islamic perspective. Till date, many organisations around the world are facing environmental, social and economic issues affecting their organisational sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

The present paper is conceptual paper based on literature review on employee’s behavioural issues and role of SQ for organisational sustainability.

Findings

This present paper argues that SQ must be considered as the important factor for employee development in the organisation. It develops spiritual awareness among employees which enhances their productivity within the organisation. Furthermore, SQ is necessary means of identifying and harnessing deeper inner resources with the capacity to care for the well-being of the organisation and advance its development.

Research limitations/implications

The paper suggests SQ and its multi-dimensions with the implication for future research in organisational sustainability.

Originality/value

The paper discusses the development of the concept of SQ from the Islamic perspective.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to synthesize the rich knowledge on spiritual intelligence (SI) research within the framework of human resource development (HRD) research.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the search of multiple electronic databases authors conducted thematic review of the literature on SI and HRD. Themes associated with SI and HRD are extracted while employing the content analysis technique.

Findings

Five major themes emerged through the process of content analysis on the body of the reviewed literature. The themes which described the presence of SI-related research within the field of HRD, included: Conceptual connections between SI and HRD; SI Holistic Mechanism; SI and Leadership development, SI measurement tools and, finally, the impact of SI on sustainability.

Research limitations/implications

The inclusion and exclusion criteria are that the search for this review has been limited to peer-reviewed journals that are published SI-related articles. This paper excluded all articles on SI that `do not explicitly discuss the valuable role of human resources. The key words used are spiritual intelligence (SI) and HRD.

Originality/value

This paper offered new-fangled value and insightful understanding on SI and its implications for other areas, more specifically HRD. It suggests that SI is an important component for organizational development. Such interventions nurture the human resources that can lead to better performance as a whole.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to find out the relationship between employee’s green behaviors (EGBs) and environmental sustainability (ES). Presently, many ES issues have impact on organizations, e.g., energy cost and climate change. In business world, there is a positive trend among organizations to start reporting over performance of ES keeping their role as corporate social responsibility alive.

Design/methodology/approach

Self-administered questionnaires were floated to gather data from employees of manufacturing and service industry. In order to analyze the collected data, regression analysis and correlation coefficient were employed to check hypotheses. Statistical Package of Social Sciences has been used for data analysis.

Findings

Results reveal that there is a direct positive relationship between EGB and environment sustainability. The five dimensions of EGB, i.e., working sustainability, conserving, avoiding harm, influencing others and taking initiative also have significant association with ES. ES carries with itself sensational openings for the HRM role and with the opportunity originates responsibility.

Practical implications

This study emphasizes the revised planning of training and development programs to create awareness among employees and strategies to improve ES and corporate social responsible level of organizations in competitive world.

Originality/value

This research carries a new horizon to explore the association of EGBs with ES in banking sector. The study presents first-ever empirical evidence about the relationship between ES and EGBs from developing countries.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the unavoidable role of Islamic spiritual intelligence in organisational sustainability. In the past two decades, increased unethical practices in organisations have resulted in the deterioration of their sustainability. Employees are continuously involved in unethical practices because of a lack of spirituality which is a serious concern for organisational sustainability.

Design/methodology/approach

This conceptual paper reviews relevant literature on Islamic spiritual intelligence and organisational sustainability to bridge a gap in the extant literature.

Findings

The review of the literature concluded that Islamic spiritual intelligence training must be included as a significant factor for employee development in the organisation. Islamic spiritual intelligence is coherent with the individual’s internal strength of having a pure heart and soul. A person with a pure heart and soul has a strong aspiration to act in an ethical way.

Research limitations/implications

The review of literature is not detailed because of the dearth of information on Islamic spiritual intelligence training for organisational sustainability.

Practical implications

This paper will increase the understanding and link between Islamic spiritual intelligence and organisational sustainability. It suggests Islamic spiritual intelligence and its dimensions with the implication for future research in organisational sustainability.

Originality/value

This paper contributes to the literature related to the application of Islamic spiritual intelligence training programmes for employees, which will have a significant impact on organisational sustainability.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to obtain greater insights into the implications for human resource development (HRD) in times of economic development, with a focus on China–Pakistan economic corridor (CPEC). In recent times of economic development, a number of economic corridors have emerged globally as tools of regional cooperation and development. In the context of Pakistan, there is a lack of appropriate attention to the field of HRD, which has suffered neglect through the decades (Abbasi and Burdey, 2008; Asrar-ul-Haq, 2015). With this conception, the present economic interventions merit a well-constructed and proper HRD policy for Pakistan. This study will provide HRD insights for policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs and business executives.

Design/methodology/approach

The research approach of this study is purely based on literature review and on secondary data.

Findings

Based on the facts and literature reviews, this study concluded that One belt, One Road in general and CPEC in particular as an economic corridor can bring sustainable and long-lasting impact on the economy only if HRD is given proper attention.

Originality/value

To the best knowledge of the researchers, this is the first study that highlighted the HRD issue in CPEC.

Abstract

Purpose

It has been observed from the history of failed dies used in local extrusion industry that after certain press cycles, severe die damage occurs by using more number of in‐house recycled billets. The purpose of this paper is to focus on the effect of billet quality on the extrusion die service life, based on using microstructural and finite element analyses.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical solution of stress distribution in extrusion die using microstructural and finite element analyses.

Findings

Simulation results demonstrate that extrusion die experiences high stresses and strains at critical locations by running secondary billets. Billet deformation behavior also shows that secondary billet has more resistance to flow during extrusion cycle, which results in such high stresses and strains in the die.

Research limitations/implications

The study includes a particular die used to extrude the aluminum alloy billets. It may need to generalized including materials other than aluminum alloy.

Practical implications

The findings are original and believed to be useful for engineers working in the extrusion dies. Since it is shown that secondary billets (recycled billets) have more resistance to flow in the dye, a care should be taken when estimating the die life for the practical applications.

Originality/value

It is an original work. It deals with the comparison of new and recycled billets's performance in terms of stress formation in the die during the extrusion cycle.

Abstract

Purpose

Laser bending is a good candidate to replace the flame bending process. The electrochemical response of laser bending region changes due to the microstructural modifications and high level of residual stress developed in the laser‐irradiated region after the bending process. Consequently, investigation into laser bending and microstructural changes in the irradiated region as well as the electrochemical response of bending section becomes essential. This paper aims to focus on the laser bending process.

Design/methodology/approach

The laser bending of steel sheets was carried out. The microstructural changes in the bending region are examined using the scanning electron microscopy and X‐ray diffraction. The electrochemical response of the bended sections is investigated through potentiodynamic tests.

Findings

It is found that laser‐irradiated surface is free from cracks and cavitations. However, deep pit sites due to secondary pitting are observed in the bending sections.

Research limitations/implications

The experiment is limited to certain thickness of the steel sheets. Increasing workpiece thickness reduces the bend angle. However, introducing high‐intensity laser beams improves the bend angle on the expense of high surface roughness in the bend section.

Practical implications

Laser bending process is involved with non‐mechanical tooling with low cost and precision of operation. Moreover, laser bending is a good candidate to replace the flame bending process. Consequently, laser bending finds application in industry. However, under the corrosive environment care should be taken.

Originality/value

The work presented is original and has not been published anywhere before. The findings will be useful for researchers and engineers working in the sheet metal forming area.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper examines the profitability and performance measurement of U.S. regional banks during the period 1994–2011, using the GMM estimator technique. Our study extends prior research by including several factors not previously considered using U.S. data.

Approach

We use bank-specific, industry-specific, and macroeconomic determinants of profitability contemporaneous with our performance indicators. We follow the accounting fundamental analysis path in explaining the bank performance.

Findings

Among the performance measures, the efficiency ratio and provisions for credit losses are negatively and equity scaled by assets is positively related to profitability. However, these relationships either reverse (efficiency ratio and provisions for credit losses) or become insignificant (equity scaled by assets) when the target becomes change in profitability. The level of nonperforming assets is negatively related to profitability across all measures of profitability used. Macroeconomic variables are largely unrelated to profitability during the year they are measured. However, they have a significant relationship with earnings change measures, suggesting they have a lagged effect on profitability. The slope of the yield curve is especially strong in this regard.

Originality

We use our determinants to model changes in bank profitability one year ahead, in addition to including several factors not previously considered, using the predictive focus of the fundamental analysis research.

Abstract

Purpose

The food industry is crucial in delivering healthy products for life saving of the society. The identification of key barriers of knowledge management (KM) is desired to enhance the sustainability of the industry. KM has been seen as a part of sustainable development by reducing the bullwhip effect in the entire supply chain. The core objective of the existing research is to prioritize the essential factors of KM adoption in sustainable supply chain (SSC) based on fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) method.

Design/methodology/approach

In order to fulfill objectives of this study, an extensive review of literature and a questionnaire-based field visits were conducted. A total of five major barriers categories and 22 sub-barriers categories were identified in food sector of Pakistan using experts' inputs. This study employed fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP).

Findings

Managerial barriers, innovation and technological barriers categories are found to be highly prioritized among others. Further, the sensitivity analysis is applied to check the incremental changes of ranked barriers. This prioritization of barriers and incremental changes in them is expected to serve food sector for long-term sustainability and competitive advantage for importers and exporters. Finally, the findings of this research are very helpful for industrial experts, practitioners, consultants and government officials in effectively developing policies regarding KM adoption in line with sustainable goals.

Research limitations/implications

The present work is conducted in the Pakistani context; however, the benchmark model may be tested and applied to other developing countries to compare the outcomes. For further research, the identified barriers may also be evaluated to establish their inter-relationships, using ISM, DEMATEL, ANP, etc. Similarly, the results of this study can also be compared with that of other fuzzy multi-criteria techniques like fuzzy TOPSIS, fuzzy VIKOR, fuzzy ELECTRE, fuzzy PROMETHEE, or fuzzy VIKOR.

Practical implications

This research study can facilitate policymakers, government bodies, stakeholders and supply chain professionals to recognize the key barriers they may encounter in adopting KM practices in their SSC. Additionally, this work helps managers to evaluate the identified barriers by computing their relative importance in adopting KM practices at managerial levels like strategically, tactically and operationally activities in business. This study also facilitates industrial management in formulating policies and action plans in case of implementation, eliminating the barriers in adoption of KM, and SSC successfully.

Originality/value

Few research studies were conducted on KM adoption in industries of China, India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia, but due to workforce diversity these industries have dissimilar views of experts about KM adoption. This study significantly contributed to fill the existing literature gap for prioritization of key barriers against KM implementation in Pakistani context.

Abstract

Purpose

The present paper is an attempt to provide a holistic approach of the Greek banking sector and how it operates.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was carried out in the banking sector of Greece in order to gather information regarding customer satisfaction and loyalty, while the financial data of the banks were attained from their annual financial statements. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypotheses.

Findings

It has been found that neither customer satisfaction nor loyalty has a significant impact on the financial performance of banks, while the remaining factors have indicated unprecedented results.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation of the study is the economic environment of Greece and the general crisis of the banking sector.

Practical implications

The study provides an insight into the Greek banking sector and the interrelationships among the investigated factors, and how customer satisfaction and loyalty could be enhanced through the remaining factors.

Originality/value

A new factor, the economics factor, was created and included in the study. Moreover, the tangibles factor was tested as an individual and not as part of service quality. Additionally, the present study is among the few that have incorporated customer satisfaction, loyalty and the financial performance of banks. To take it one step further, some more factors were included to present a more holistic approach of how customer satisfaction and loyalty are enhanced.
